There has been a new dog in the neighborhood, fine looking animal. Male mixed German Shepard, lab, chow. Black with white undertones on chest & feet. Probably one yr. old, friendly, likes people. My old 12 yr. old boy dog has adopted him. Seems to worry about if it has food etc..
When its cold out my dog, Stub, wakes me up at sunrise so he can go out to check on him. Will take dog biscuits outside, drop them in the driveway, then call for the stray dog. Stub makes me take his food dish outside or else he won't eat (so Stray dog can share). Today I gave him a bone and the stray dog was there. Stub, who has never shared a bone in his life, took his bone over to where Stray Dog was, & gave it to him. This is totally out of character for Stub, he takes down the girl dog every time she get near anything he wants.
I don't know if the dog was dumped in the country, or belongs to some neighbor a couple of mile down the road. I feed him, pet him, even worm him.

Canal blocked by boat protesters
About 40 boats will block the Kennet and Avon canal in Wiltshire on Saturday in protest at cuts in government funding for waterways.
It follows a similar protest on the waterway in November.

It's actually more complicated than that. The proposed National History Standards, which would have created a test for history (and hence money attached to it) were scuttled by conservative groups who felt they weren't sufficiently celebratory or great white man centered. With No Child Left Behind tying money to what's tested, schools (and especially elementary and middle schools) have actually cut back on history. Thus it's been been cutting back on history that actually deals thoughtfully with topics like Native Americans and slavery rather than trying to "shove down the kids throats" some hooray imperialism and white supremacy version.

See now, if *I* ran the schools, I'd not worry too much about the state-sponsored line, I'd just make sure all the students got some schooling in, well, I don't know what you'd call it, exactly, but 'dialectical argumentation' or something like that.
I remember reading about the Soviets trumpeting their system as being so much better than capitalism, blah blah...when you think about it, any child hearing a government state that its system was superior would subconsciously be aware that there existed an argument. Hence, if you were to kind of teach the history of ideas, along with giving students the intellectual toolbox to inquire for themselves, I don't think any particular dogma could just breeze along without being challenged.
It's the intellectual curiosity/think for yourself gene that the education system so badly fails to implant, IMO.
