Now for the bad news (which is always off topic):
"Flu Stories: Bird Flu aka Cat Flu?
by DemFromCT
Sat Mar 10, 2007 at 06:25:31 AM PST
Well, what do you expect when cats eat birds? As if bird weren't enough to worry about, maybe H5N1 should be aka cat flu.
"The prevalence of the virus is quite high" judging from preliminary tests on swabs of the cats' upper airways, C.A. Nidom, a scientist at Airlangga University in Surabaya, said in a telephone interview on Feb. 28. Nidom found H5N1 in 98 of 500 cats living near poultry markets in high-risk areas on the island of Java and in Lampung province on southern Sumatra island.
There have been concerns about cats for some time, originally brought forward in Feb 2006 by a scientist named Andrew Jeremijenko, but the extent of the problem, at least in high risk geographic areas, has been under-appreciated by many. You can assume if there's a SE Asian live bird market where H5N1 is found, and there are cats in the vicinity, that's a risk area."

Oh and here is the other bad news:
"The fox designs the hen house. “The Internal Revenue Service is asking tax lawyers and accountants who create tax shelters and exploit loopholes to take the lead in writing some of its new tax rules. … [Critics] worry that having private lawyers and accountants draft tax rules could allow them to subtly skew them in favor of their clients. ‘It’s not the fox guarding the hen house; it’s the fox designing the hen house,’ said Paul C. Light, a professor of political science at New York University.” Kevin Drum has much more. 9:52 am | Comment (7)" http://thinkprogress.org/

OT: Osama bin Laden could not have imagined as he fled the battlefield in Tora Bora in 2001 that he would have lived to see his 50th birthday this Saturday, March 10.
But he has done that and more -- restructuring al Qaeda despite its losses, creating new base areas in Africa and Iraq, expanding into Europe, drawing in thousands of new recruits around the world, reviving the Taliban movement in Afghanistan and turning Pakistan into a terrorism depot.
(snip)
However, the truth remains that bin Laden has survived half a century not due to luck or competence, but due to the failed policies of the United States, which declined to chase him down when it was much easier to do so and instead focused on invading Iraq.
responding to hate speech is an all consuming project --just fatfuck Lou Dobbs could take all day
as for Tweety his sexual fantasies are becoming stranger everyday
and his ideal man is John Wayne movie actor second to Mr.Smith (Jimmy Stewart) another fictional character

Coulter's comments, of course, weren't about convincing people that John Edwards is gay. They were about trying to strip him of his masculinity, to feminize him
Masculine Ann Coulter could use a little more feminizing, if I do say so myself.

"McCain: When I Have A Question, I Call Kissinger
By Eric Kleefeld | bio
Guess who John McCain relies perhaps more than anyone else for counsel on foreign policy? None other than Henry Kissinger. The Associated Press reports that McCain let the secret slip at a recent fundraiser at which the guest of honor was the former Secretary of State. "When I have a question about something that's going on in the world, I call Dr. Kissinger and he is able to connect the dots for me," McCain said, according to the AP. "It is easy to be an expert on one aspect of some international situation. He's one of the only people I've ever known who can connect the entire scenario for you in a way that you understand the completeness of the challenge." Others who McCain says he consults: Brent Scowcroft, George P. Shultz, Lawrence Eagleburger, Robert Kagan and Bill Kristol."

Eight Afghan boys who stowed away on the back of a lorry bound for Britain made a disastrous mistake.
Instead of slipping undetected across the Channel, they hid themselves on a vehicle delivering bread to a giant American air base, one of the most heavily guarded sites in Britain.
The moment the terrified youngsters were discovered at RAF Lakenheath, they were surrounded by armed American soldiers on permanent high alert for terrorist attack. The boys could even have been forgiven for thinking they had arrived in the United States itself. Although the base in Suffolk is owned by the Ministry of Defence, it is set up like a small American town, with burger bars, cinemas and a bowling alley.
Guess who John McCain relies perhaps more than anyone else for counsel on foreign policy? None other than Henry Kissinger.
One more reason to flush Saint McCain down the crapper. All we [don't] need is a return to the foreign policy [read: war] horrors of the 1960s and 1970s.
Kissinger is a war criminal. I would love to see him in the dock at the Hague, along with Chimpy and Darth.

Priests To Purify Site After Bush Visit
(AP) GUATEMALA CITY Mayan priests will purify a sacred archaeological site to eliminate "bad spirits" after President Bush visits next week, an official with close ties to the group said Thursday.
"That a person like (Bush), with the persecution of our migrant brothers in the United States, with the wars he has provoked, is going to walk in our sacred lands, is an offense for the Mayan people and their culture," Juan Tiney, the director of a Mayan nongovernmental organization with close ties to Mayan religious and political leaders, said Thursday. http://cbs13.com/topstories/

O I think watching Rick Perry try to run for president would be almost as funny as watching Rudy Giuiliani run.
Run, Rick, run! I want to find out what actually happened when the gay rumors were flying about you and your sec. of state.
Hahahahahahahaha!!!!

What a sad bunch of losers.
pie
reminds me of barbara bush who remarked about the dem prospects being a 'sorry bunch" just before she lamented that she "pitied the foo" that messed with her family cause they'd be dead. nothing like honesty in politics. was that right after the babysitter got run over by her own car at Neil's?

Yet the GOP lost.
Why?
did they take a break after committing significant fraud in the three previous federal elections?
Randolph carter | 03.10.07 - 10:57 am
my guess
where the Pukes lost most were in seats they thought were 'safe.'
ergo they didn't feel the need to cheat--and divert resources--where they felt no threat...
those three indiana seats, for example...murphy's seat in pa, too...they lost in areas where they had thought they had locks...

Gays marrying means they will live together, and buy homes together, and contribute to their communities.
It's much better to call up a masseuse and find a hotel room, and place an order for meth. That is the way God intended it.

Mann's time would be better used in figuring out how to feminize himself.
She wrote for George magazine 10 years ago, and I happened to read one of her columns while on a plane with nothing else to read. In this particular piece, the then-38 year old Coulter was complaining about how "boys" in DC weren't asking her out on dates. And yes, she was referring to men in their late 30s and 40s as "boys" (unless she had actually been trolling high school and college campuses), and in the same breath, wondering why she couldn't get a date.
I couldn't find any trace of the piece online, though there is a piece in the Salon archive responding to it.

In the wake of the GWB years, I just have a really hard time picturing anyone with an (R) after their name getting elected president.
Unless they go on the record as saying Bush is a monumental disaster and have a documented history of opposing pretty much everything he's ever done.
(Needless to say, a Democrat with those same traits would be nice too.)

Saw THE HOST yesterday.
Best funny/scary monster movie in years. Actually, even better than that sounds.
Also saw 300.
Not as jawdroppingly stupid as the NYTimes review (which is pretty funny -- you should read it) suggests, but close. I think I lost interest when the Mutant Ninjas (I'm not kidding) appeared. Also, the woman-on-Elephant Man sex scene wasn't nearly hot enough.

Considering how dangerous it is to be a NOC and that she could be called back to that duty at any time, as long as she was an active agent, I would say that you hit that one right on the nose, WGG. They do have small children, yes?

Friends and I used to try to figure out why the MCM was so negative toward Dems, why it turned on Clinton almost from the day of his first inauguration (after several adulatory articles about his breathtaking openness to ideas of others and how he clearly grasped complex ideas during those round tables he held prior to the swearing in, then, kaboom, nothing Clinton did was right and, eventually, not interesting enough to report on!), why Dem pols and ideas were so denigrated.
We really had problems understanding what was going on, especially, I think, because so much of it was coming from the NYTimes and WaPo. The Times was regarded as an exemplar of "good journalism" and the Post venerated for its breaking of the Watergate/Nixon stories.
We was bamboozled. Still are, so often, by their clever wordsmithing.
Thank you, Bob Somerby, for picking at this day after day after day, for bringing us "sophisticated" news consumers along to understanding what the MCM was and is actually doing.
It's not easy to give up long cherished admiriations and understandings of how one thinks things work.
Thank you, Media Matters, Joe Conason, Paul Krugman, Digby, more whom I've forgotten--all and more who realized the news providers had taken it upon themselves to become the power brokers who used to rule in smoke filled back rooms: For MCMers do see themselves as the true selectors of our presidents and other powerful elected offices.
