Do the Spartans have their long shoulder-length hair in 300? That was one of the fun things in the accounts of the battle -- a Persian spy returned to the king, who asked what the Spartans were up to. The spy said they were sitting around combing their hair. The king and his entourage laughed -- until a Greek traitor among them pointed out that that meant the Spartans were preparing to die -- i.e. to fight to the death.

Speaking of films, the film I photographed on last spring is debuting at SXSW this evening.
And what guys! Decked out like gladiators in a gay fashion layout, the soldiers from the Greek city-state of Sparta look gym-ready for battle in crotch-squeezing ensembles that expose as much flesh as an R rating will allow. Manliest of all is The Phantom of the Opera's Gerard Butler as Leonidas, the king with no patience for the cowards and boy-lovers on the Greek council. Dominic West plays Theron, a sleazy politician keen on stopping Leonidas from inciting war against the Persians. Theron denigrates the theory that the Persians intend to dominate the world and unleash their weapons of mass destruction, including mutant rhinos, elephants and a masked army called the Immortals. That leaves Leonidas no choice, after a short break to refresh the missus, Queen Gorgo (Lena Headey), but to round up 300 of his bravest bodyguards and embark on a doomed mission against the Persians. The king does everything but sing Bruce Springsteen's "No Surrender" to rally the troops. The trick is to bottle up the pesky Persians in a narrow mountain pass.
As you might guess, 300 dazzles as spectacle, but as history it's dodgy. The film's queer eye focuses hard on Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro), the Persian king who fancies himself a god and keeps insisting that Leonidas get on his knees before him. Leonidas has more than a touch of Mel Gibson in him, and he will not comply. This causes Xerxes to pout and add more jewelry to his body armor. Meanwhile, back home in Sparta, Queen Gorgo tries to persuade Theron to rally the council to help her husband by submitting to Theron's S&M sexual desires. He backs her against a wall, lifts her toga and drills away with a few murmurs about how "this will not be over quickly, and you will not enjoy it." But since we're in Miller territory, you can bet Gorgo will make Theron gag on his words.

From Newsday's review... http://www.newsday.com/entertain...eview-
headlines
One hears of allegedly serious minds grappling over what the "politics" of "300" are. Bloggers, pundits and others with too much time on their hands have spent the weeks leading to the opening of this revved-up and outlandish retelling of the Battle of Thermopylae arguing over which present-day parallel best fits the ancient combatants.
For the moment, we'll bite: Are the 300 Spartans, led by King Leonidas (Gerard Butler), correlatives for freedom-loving Americans holding the line against Middle East terror as personified here by the massive Persian army? Or are the nation-gobbling Persians, led by King Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro), analogous to what some believe to be imperialistic Americans?
If "300" carried any intellectual heft (if, in other words, it was scrupulous with historic details), one could see the point of thrashing these provocative notions to their metaphoric nubs. But this movie in no way pretends to be a replication of historical events. It is, instead, a willed hallucination of ancient history goosed with mutant warriors, rhinos outfitted like Sherman tanks and a King Xerxes who's dolled up with enough glittering threads and glossy makeup to make every David Bowie wanna-be from the mid-1970s chew his knuckles in fuming envy.
Put bluntly, the movie's just too darned silly to withstand any ideological theorizing. And "silly" is invoked here, more or less, with affection.
This unapologetically gory ripsnorter is adapted with what looks to be obsessive faithfulness from a graphic novel by Frank Miller, whose "Sin City" was, like "300," transformed into a blood-caked movie with live actors, digitally enhanced backdrops and ornate visual effects.

I went out to slam beers with a couple of the carpenters after work yesterday, and one of them came back from the restroom and said, "hey, while I was in the bathroom, I saw where someone wrote "(my boss' name here) was here" on the wall at about waist level."
I totally cracked up. My boss is about 5'4" and I'm always joking to him that he's a "shortist" because there are only 2 guys working for us who are over 5'7". He hired a Scottish "joiner" the other day and one of the attributes he extolled to me was that the guy is only 5'3" but burly and tattooed and could probably take out JT (our one guy who is over 6' - who always comes to mind when anyone says "Hulk SMASH!"). What I'm learning in the aftermath of the decision to ditch the Fox News debate is that the only thing conservatives want is for Democrats to effectively get the message out and attract new voters. Who knew?
Here I was, thinking that conservatives were standing in the way of the Democratic agenda, when in reality they're doing everything they can to help us expand our majorities!
I would humbly suggest that in this new spirit of cooperation we're seeing from conservatives, that they demonstrate some good will by wholeheartedly embracing the Pelosi/Reid agenda in Congress.

They'd have to get the rights away from the asshole who owns them -- gut was trying to build a Lord of Light theme park with the idea to use the park as the sets for a movie. I know that about ten years ago Universal tried to get the rights from him, but without success.
Another favorite book of mine is "Out of the Mouth of the Dragon" (can't remember who wrote it now -- must be brain dead). It's about the world going periodically nuts and trying to bring on Armageddon.

Can't think of it for some reason...must be a Democrat, right? Surely such baggage would instantly disqualify someone from seeking national office...the media would make sure of that.

They'd have to get the rights away from the asshole who owns them...
It started off innocently enough as he made small-talk with Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar, mentioning, in passing, that senators often take off their ties when negotiating bills behind closed doors. Klobuchar needled him about it.
Klobuchar: “Ties off?… But I don’t wear a tie.”
Brownback: “I could say ‘dresses off’ but I won’t.”
Klobuchar (laughing, blushing): “Not while you’re running for president.”

Leftovers from last night. I repost it 'cause it really set off Mrs. ql from ny.
This is a beaut. From NYT Krugman via Raw Story:
-----
Donald Shields and John Cragan, two professors of communication, have compiled a database of investigations and/or indictments of candidates and elected officials by U.S. attorneys since the Bush administration came to power. Of the 375 cases they identified, 10 involved independents, 67 involved Republicans and 298 involved Democrats. The main source of this partisan tilt was a huge disparity in investigations of local politicians, in which Democrats were seven times as likely as Republicans to face Justice Department scrutiny.

And yet, you "all" kept your mouth shut.
Makes me think of some comments I read by some Washington news media bigshot about the Jeff "8 inches uncut" Gannon story. He basically said that it was a great story with everything you'd want (sex, scandal, politics, White House involvement). He then lamented that it was just too damn bad that they couldn't possibly report on it.
Basically proof that the media fucks get their marching orders from Karl.

I agree. The problem is that I don't see that the Dems on the Senate Judiciary Committee are willing to look that closely at that aspect.
I wish Levin and the others would quit looking at just the headlines they can create (and justifiably)and move beyond that into the underlying problem: we have an administration of crooked, base, arrogant, unredeemable scoundrels who are hell bent on destroying our democracy.

Blogs are a waste of time if blogsite owners BAN what they do not like to hear.
Bloggers are high on crack for they think they have had a significant impact on anything when bloggers have not changed a damn thing.
I know this type of post only gets blogsite owners really pissed but just let me say I am nobody's sycophant and am not in the glib category of blogsite owners whom are part of this incessant narcisstic culture in America.
This is not to say I do not share many of the anti-Bush sentiments but I am not sold on such political establishment gatekeeper blogs which too many of these blogsites are all about. Capeche? Want the truth about Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton and John Edwards and their counterparts on the right? They are all connected to the same establishment and the same establishment's money and fortunes. The Republicans are in fact good criminals but the Democrats are impotent in being able to take any direct action to hold the GOP criminals in check or accountable.
Shall I tell you all of the Clinton-Bush CIA connection and that the Clinton's marriage is a CIA marriage? I could say a lot more but this site might be part of the illuminati....for every time I post such things I am BANNED from posting comments any longer.

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Republic of Georgia said Thursday it is raising the number of its soldiers serving with the U.S.-led coalition in Iraq to more than 2,000 from the current 850.
Georgia's ambassador to Washington said one reason for more than doubling the country's commitment to the fight was to send a signal to NATO, which the former Soviet republic is trying to join.

When will these blogs say that the war in Iraq was morally wrong?
When will these blogs say that killing innocent Iraqis is morally wrong and in fact war crimes and hold both political parties guilty of these war crimes?
Whem will these blogs state that Bush and Cheney and all those who went along with the illegal invasion of Iraq as war criminals who need to be sent to the Hague?
When will these blogs hold Hillary and Bill Clinton guilty of war crimes for the illegal bombings in Iraq in 1998 and in Kosovo--without UN mandate or Congressional approval? One of the biggest problems facing the USA is the fact that too many Dems are bought and paid for corporate shills, like every single ReNAMBLAcan. the fact that Obey called out liberals tells that story very well. Once we are done destroying the fascist, treasonous republic party, we will clean up the mess the centrist sellout Dems have made, and get this country back on its original liberal footing, so we can move forward again. In the meantime, liberals are the saving grace of any democracy.

I guess Gonzo is no longer "too busy" to respond to congress...
[Attorney General Alberto] Gonzales gave in to Democratic demands that he allow five of his top aides to be interviewed by staff members from the Senate Judiciary Committee as part of its investigation into the motives behind the dismissals. Sen. Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) said yesterday that those interviews will begin within two weeks.
The House Judiciary Committee also wants to hear from those same officials -- it's still unclear when or in what form that will happen, though.
The Post also has a good behind the scenes look at what Gonzales' week has been like:
Sen. John Ensign (Nev.) has emerged as perhaps Gonzales's toughest GOP critic in Congress. He remains furious that his state's U.S. attorney, Daniel Bogden, was dismissed for no apparent reason other than a desire, expressed in congressional testimony by a Justice aide, for "new blood."
Ensign summoned Gonzales to his Senate office on Thursday to discuss the matter, and Gonzales also dispatched Deputy Attorney General Paul J. McNulty to talk with Ensign, according to aides.

For years now we've been told that a lot of people won't vote for Democrats because we don't have the proper reverence for their family values and war fighting capabilities. But it turns out not to be true at all. These allegedly deeply principled Americans are perfectly willing to vote for hypocritical, law and order drag queens over a man whose voting record and worldview has been consistently conservative and it's because he has been a maverick, not that he isn't one now. You can be forgiven extra-marital affairs or being a social liberal in your past --- even being gay --- if you are loyal to the Party. McCain bucks the hierarchy and that is the one thing that Republicans will not tolerate.

Because we've finally reached the tipping point and so many Americans have seen the corrupt and vicious ideology she supports for what it is. Logic tells us that tipping points are anything over 50%, but in politics, probably because so many people opt out of active participation for a number of reasons, I'd say the tipping point is really around 70% and we are finally there.

though to be honest, my grandparents on mother's side were charter members of the old South Shore Country Club in Chicago long before either she or obviously i were born, and--as i recall from my childhood, vaguely, as i was 6 or 7 the last time i visited there with them--the only people of color one encountered there were employees...

Did you see the shot at President Gore in the second to the last paragraph? Quoting:
"Closer to home the film reminds me less of the usual splatter entertainments that clutter American movie theaters and more of another recent horror film, the one in which a newly thawed alien with a giant brain delivers apocalyptic warnings to humanity about its imminent future. I’m talking of course about the documentary “An Inconvenient Truth.” Much like that Al Gore big-screen lecture, “The Host” is a cautionary environmental tale about the domination of nature and the costs of human folly, and it may send chills up your spine. But only one will tickle your fancy and make you cry encore, not just uncle."
Al Gore = newly thawed alien with a giant brain. Ha-ha-ha-ha. Well it would be funny if not for the hundreds of thousands of dead people who would still be alive if Mr. Gore were in the White House where he belongs.
They just can't stop with the shots at Al Gore. Bastards
