GravatarBut we're still the party that purges anyone who is not ideologically pure, right?

Gravatar... and democrat candidates have to prove they like killing babies but calling it abortion, have to insist they want to tax people who die (death tax, or grave-robbing), have to buy into global warming chicken-littleism, have to hate Christians and Catholics, etc.

Republicans have to say they like people to keep their own money and that freedom of religion is good. Who's worse?

GravatarYes the whole package is hard to support but they still try and do just that. That is one hate filled agenda. Which it seems there is never enough hate for these guys to go around.

GravatarBut we're still the party that purges anyone who is not ideologically pure, right?

That's what the last memo from Soros said...........I think I got that one on monday or teusday so it should be current.

Republicans of course. They are in it for themselves alone.

GravatarYes the whole package is hard to support but they still try and do just that. That is one hate filled agenda. Which it seems there is never enough hate for these guys to go around.

So, should we root for them to get their wish, on the grounds that it will cause them to nominate a completely unelectable candidate?

Or not, because their Frankencandidate might somehow *win*?

GravatarLike Digby says, conservatives will tolerate all sorts of "errant" off-message shit as long as their boy knows who's calling the shots.

Most conservatives aren't really conservative at all, but authoritarian. Big surprise, I know.

Gravatar(No, not *that* Franken)

Gravatar... pigboy says, as he supports the party that is pro-infanticide.

GravatarAmerican Hawk, go get a mirror, put it by your computer and google "authoritarian submissive."

Then come back and tell us what you learned.

Or not.

GravatarYou said package... huh huh huh huh.

Gravatar... and democrat candidates have to prove they like killing babies but calling it abortion...

I'm sure Harry Reid would disagree, you stick-riding dorkmeister.

Republicans have to say they like white people to keep their own money, and not give it to the niggers, like those hippy loving dems, and that freedom to use religion like a cudgel is good. Who's worse?

Eli | Homepage | 03.10.07 - 3:14 pm | #

We gotta find our own candidate that we can support and who is better than who they put up. And we need to call them on their shit and expose their candidates as the unelectable fucks they are.

Gravatar30 pounds of cat is a lot for any one lap to handle

GravatarA link for American Chickenhawk. Conservatives are attacking Jenna Bush.

I guess so we don't have to do it.

GravatarEli, Ntodd,

GravatarThere are some issues some conservatives don't care about so they are willing to let the default position stand.

American Hawk | 03.10.07 - 3:15 pm | #

I am? I did not realize that. Where did I post that I am pro-inganticide? Could you please link it?

GravatarWe gotta find our own candidate that we can support and who is better than who they put up.

Simply "better" is not enough. Gore and Kerry were better than Dubya by a lot. They have to be better by a sufficient margin to overcome a hostile media, the turnout of a fanatical Republican base, and any election-gaming/vote-tampering that might occur.

Gravatar30 pounds of cat is a lot for any one lap to handle

Pffft. Wimp.

GravatarAs Thers noted, the republicans want another one of these.

GravatarYet once again I posted at the end of a dead thread. To repeat myself:

I guess I agree with that, but I also think that her and Limbaugh and O'Reilly really don't believe anything that they say.

Yes, but the question was, with all the stupid and mean things she's said in the past which went by with no repercussions, does her calling Edwards a faggot now have consequences? My point being that now the papers who published her realize that so many of their readers aren't amused that they are finally calling her on it. So many people are just so damn sick of the rightwing cheerlead and smear squad and won't put up with it anymore. A lot of people just ignored her or remained quiet, but they just aren't doing that anymore.

Gravatarhow be's the be?

Not so good - this hive collapse syndrome is a serious problem.

Gravatar30 pounds of cat is a lot for any one lap to handle

Especially when they're fighting for the space.

GravatarRepublicans are worse, AH. they like to kill real people, not clumps of nonviable cells. They like to avoid taxes and yet utilize the public sector for their own greed and gain, and build monarchial dynasties that destroy the Republic. They like to ignore death and destruction caused by global warming because of the same short-sighted greed that has them flouting the laws of the land and dumping the tax burden on those who can least afford it. They use phony chritianity and force it on the public to manipulate the uneducated and fearful, and they hate religious freedom with a passion. Republicans, as you prove here, have no moral centers, and will lie even when there's no need to. And, as you have shown so well, they lie to themselves, as sick as can be. Greedy, murderous, egotistical subhumans make up the bulk of the ReNAMBLAcan party, which is why we must necessarily destroy it for America to survive.

GravatarConservatives would rather kill themselves than admit that Liberals are, as always, correct. Correct on Bush being an idiot, correct that the "conservative movement" was all about destroying America, correct that conservatives are idiots, etc.

GravatarI've missed ronjazz.

GravatarToonscribe,

From my response below:

Yes, but the question was, with all the stupid and mean things she's said in the past which went by with not repercussions, does her calling Edwards a faggot now have consequences.

I dunno. Maybe.

When she advocating backing a truck bomb into the NYT's building, did that?

What really amazes me is that, at anytime, I could go downtown and hear a certifiably insane person spout off the same nonsense that she does. But I tend to ignore it, for the most part.

And I'll just continue to ignore her, too.

GravatarIt's like I've said before, it's all about the stupids getting revenge on the smarties.

What other reason could there be for insisting that candidates conform to certain views only for the purpose of sticking it to the smart guys (liberals)?

Gravatarbe really interesting to see who the repubs end up with as a nominee, and how *that* process shakes down... lot more division there than in '00 or '04, I think.

GravatarI dunno. Maybe.

I think this has happened every time, to some degree. Coulter says something godawful, everyone tut-tuts about it for a while and drops her like a hot potato. But when the heat's off and people have forgotten, they welcome her back with open arms.

Rinse, blather, repeat.

Gravatar“Does (it) mean to stop this increase in methane we’ve got to put catalytic converters on the backs of cows?” - James Sensenbrenner

Gravatar"Polar bears, sea ice and global warming are taboo subjects, at least in public, for some U.S. scientists attending meetings abroad, environmental groups and a top federal wildlife official said on Thursday.[..]

The matter came to light in e-mails from the Fish and Wildlife Service that were distributed by the Natural Resources Defense Council and the Center for Biological Diversity, both environmental groups.

Listed as a "new requirement" for foreign travelers on U.S. government business, the memo says that requests for foreign travel "involving or potentially involving climate change, sea ice, and/or polar bears" require special handling, including notice of who will be the official spokesman for the trip.[..]

Two accompanying memos were offered as examples of these kinds of assurance. Both included the line that the traveler "understands the administration's position on climate change, polar bears, and sea ice and will not be speaking on or responding to these issues."

GravatarLiberals still can't accept that they won NOTHING in 2006. The People stand by their troops and their president, and your caterwauling whining about wiretaps and the war? We're not listening.

Gravatardigby says:

For years now we've been told that a lot of people won't vote for Democrats because we don't have the proper reverence for their family values and war fighting capabilities. But it turns out not to be true at all. These allegedly deeply principled Americans are perfectly willing to vote for hypocritical, law and order drag queens over a man whose voting record and worldview has been consistently conservative and it's because he has been a maverick, not that he isn't one now. You can be forgiven extra-marital affairs or being a social liberal in your past --- even being gay --- if you are loyal to the Party. McCain bucks the hierarchy and that is the one thing that Republicans will not tolerate.

GravatarIt really makes perfect sence. It is how you keep people from straying. Everyone in line at all times.

GravatarGary, how can you be listening when the sirens go off all the time coming to get you for parole violations due to your charges for harming children?

Gravatar. It's about demonstrating their fealty to the movement, and proving they're sincere in their desire to fuck with liberals. It's kinda weird.

It's just this weirdness that is sending the whole party over the cliff.

Gravatarbe really interesting to see who the repubs end up with as a nominee, and how *that* process shakes down... lot more division there than in '00 or '04, I think.

i am of the mind that the Republicans might not WANT to field a good candidate. All the chickens are coming home to roost. In the next couple of years - 2008 on, especially - there's going to be a world of hurt. Much of that will stick to whomever's in office.

The smartest thing the GOP could do is run a sacrificial pawn and ALLOW a Democratic victory. Then use the next 4 years for the Mighty Wurlitzer to insist over and over that "It's all the damn Democrats' fault!"

After 4 years of Democrats having to fix their messes and take their blame, run again.

GravatarWhat they are sincere about is preserving their privlieged positions in the culture.

whether religious or financial, or social, or political in nature, what these soi disant 'conservatives' worry about conserving is their tenuous hold on the machineries--and the rewards-- of power...

as long as each can exercise the privileges of power in their exclusive domains, they'll make any alliances necessary, do any deeds, break (or better yet, enact) any law.

if one is not regarding them, not treating them, not opposing them in this full knowledge, they will prosper...
./

GravatarBoBo, from digby:

DAVID BROOKS: I know a lot of very socially conservative people who want Rudy Giuliani. They know where he stands on abortion and gay marriage. They know all that stuff. But they like him because they think he's a fighter.

And they buy the story, which he tells quite well, that he fought liberals in New York, he even fought my newspaper, which goes a long way in the Republican Party. And so they like that idea, and so they're willing to support him.

They say, "He may not be a great guy, he may not agree with us, but we need that kind of guy now." So his lead is serious. I'm not sure it will hold up. His campaign is very poorly developed, but he is now the front-runner, with the support of a lot of social conservatives who will stay with him, I think.

GravatarIn order to be a conservative these days, you have to the ability to state that 2+2=5 with a straight face...

In the end the Party would announce that two and two made five, and you would have to believe it. It was inevitable that they should make that claim sooner or later: the logic of their position demanded it. Not merely the validity of experience, but the very existence of external reality, was tacitly denied by their philosophy. The heresy of heresies was common sense. And what was terrifiying was not that they would kill you for thinking otherwise, but that they might be right. For, after all, how do we know that two and two make four? Or that the force of gravity works? Or that the past is unchangeable? If both the past and the external world exist only in the mind, and if the mind itself is controllable—what then?

George Orwell, 1984.

GravatarThe FBI has a program that can access all Internet postings and all ISP numbers called the Carnivore Program so even blogsite owners have to play the game and maybe even hand over information on you all in here without you knowing it...keep on babbling though--I am sure some of you are still know-it-alls and jerks...some of you cannot help yourselves and if the truth hit you square in your eyes, you'd still yell like losers. But, then again, the Carnivore Program needs no cooperation wit blogsite owners--they can access every bit of information from emails to ISP numbers to postings on every one of these sites by your ISP#'s and whatever you have ever said in these blogs without the knowledge or permission of the blogsite owners…so, yes, the FBI has everyone of you in their databases and what is known as the Carnivore system and their supercomputer systems that track all Internet activity.…I know you are all too smart and much more intelligent than I am and knew this already!!!! Gravatarone thing that bothers me about these contemporary 'conservatives' is their eagerness to give up basic rights and allow the government to peek into many parts of their life. I actually hear people calling in to C-Span saying things like "If you aren't doing anything wrong then why do you care?" and "They're doing it to keep America safe." At every new revelation they sit back and take the intrusion of government into their life to feel a little safer. All of my life I've heard that one of the hallmarks of conservative ideals was to not have government snooping into your actions. What cowards these 'conservatives' have become.

GravatarMy mom is one of those people and it really is strange to see up-close in action. She comes from an old Kennedy-style democratic Massachusetts family, but somewhere along the way she went off the rails; and now her driving political instinct really is hating liberals. Period. She could care less about the gays or abortion (she's down for gay marriage and feels abortion should be easily accessed) but she is rabidly anti-tax and immigrant. She's all over the place, really; but ultimately satisfied only by a candidate who shares and feeds her fevor for making fun of liberals and proving them wrong and stupid. She LOVES that shit. Even when it comes to things like 'the gays' or abortion that she is as far from the conservative movement as possible, she still enjoys seeing someone from there humiliate a liberal on the subject. I don't know what it gives those people... something powerful.

And all Internet activity is recorded, documented, and stored into a huge system for usage at an date the government chooses and none of you will know it and this includes your medical and bank records.

The real reason behind those "discount" cards are for the government working with the corporations and stores to track all your purchaes and someday to ne used against you if you are eating the wrong foods and that your insurance companies would not pay if they knew you were not obeying the doctor's orders.

Yes, these systems are all gonna be used to blackmail all of you in the future and they will know what you think of the government as well if they start to open up prison camps already being used for such purposes.

GravatarNot that legality has anything to do with how they operate (as we learned again this week).

The Bureau never has, since the days when J. Edgar Hoover directed it as a personal feifdom.

THAT'S why such agencies are to be distrusted, and their powers minimalized. In all human history, the spies and enforcers ALWAYS end up private kingdoms devoted to their own power.

as someone pointed out, the "conservatives" used to think this. But, as an honest Republican of my acquaintence said, "Resistance to big governemtn lasts until you have your hands on the control levers of a big government".

Gravatarone thing that bothers me about these contemporary 'conservatives' is their eagerness to give up basic rights and allow the government to peek into many parts of their life.

Gingrich is still saying that the 9th circuit court of appeals should be abolished, and that people should be prepared to sacrifice any rights, to support the war on terra.

This is not new, though. The right has long depended on the left to preserve the right's liberties. c.f., the virtually normal fifth columnist.

GravatarReview of tonight's sci-fi thriller 'EarthStorm'

This is an embarrassment to Canadian film making (not like this is not a regular occurrence). The acting is atrocious, but ultimately the blame falls on the editing. Anyone who knows anything about film-making knows that even an adequate editor can make gold out of...well you know what I'm saying. I couldn't watch more than 20 minutes. It is sad that this is what limited Canadian funding decided to green light. I say boo.

Sounds fantabulous!

GravatarTena--same here. Why bother being afraid? It takes up too much time and energy that I, and everyone I know, need for other things.

GravatarAll of my life I've heard that one of the hallmarks of conservative ideals was to not have government snooping into your actions.

Conservatism has always had a large measure of authoritarianism and law'n'order bullying big government, so long as the bullying was done against 'those' people - furrniners, hippies, 'free-thinkers', consumers of recreational drugs not legalized by the state and sold by big corporations during football games and such - and not business regulations against the Rotary Club types.

Libertarians, who put minimal, open-book government at the center of their philosophy, get absolutely no respect from me if they still support the Chimp and Dick the Sick -- the most arrogant, secretive, authoritarian and anti-libertarian government in living memory.

GravatarTena--same here. Why bother being afraid? It takes up too much time and energy that I, and everyone I know, need for other things.

Sometimes I worry that the FBI finds me boring and tame when compared to all the other Dangerous Radicals, but I just have to remind myself that they're not who I'm writing for.

GravatarAnd then the Atriots engage in one of their favorite games, which is to huddle and discuss who the "troll" might actually be, because in their mind there are only one or two people who come to "their" site and disagree with them. Damn, proven correct again.

GravatarI try NOT to think about privacy issues too much. I simply assume that everywhere I go, everything I do, and everything that I am is capable of being recorded and analyzed.

Tech columnist Annalee Newitz had an interesting take on this very subject this week:

I've gone beyond the Electronic Frontier Foundation party line about how this is bad for privacy because the government can gain access to your personal data online. I mean: yes, the loss of privacy is terrible and dangerous, but this situation is worse than potentially being data-raped by some feds trolling for terrorists. When we store all our personal, financial, and social information on other people's computers, we risk losing everything for reasons even stupider than the war on terror...

Gravatar"I would call our diplomacy quiet and effective diplomacy — diplomacy all aimed at helping people, aimed at elevating the human condition, aimed at expressing the great compassion of the American people," Bush said at a joint news conference with Uruguayan President Tabare Vazquez.

Judging from the response in the street, I don't think his quiet diplomacy's working very well.

GravatarTrademark Dave,

The problem is not the lack of privacy for that died some time ago, it is that there really is no alternative. If you want to live in modern society and enjoy the benefits, you sacrifice this inforation: it is the the cost of admission.

I wish it were not so, but I cannot change this and neither can anyone else. We can huff and puff but the truth is that the time to fight is past, the battles are over and the war is lost.

GravatarIf the "troll" had anything worthwhile to say, maybe the "Atriots" wouldn't be so fucking bored with it that poking it with a stick was the only worthwhile thing to do...

Gravatar"...libertarianism has always been utterly bereft of any moral authority."

MANY years ago, Ayn Rand gave a speech at the Ford Hall Forum, here in Boston.

She said:"If you want to waste your time and money helping the handicapped, we will not stop you."

You cannot begin to imagine the hate and contempt that dripped from each syllable of 'handicapped.'

The loathing for the untermensch, the life unworthy of life.

And that any rational being would even consider for a moment spending time and money to help the weak, well, it was just beyond her comprehension.

And when she paused after the word, "you", the audience erupted into cheers and applause.

Republicans have to say ... that freedom of religion is good.

That's very tolerant and liberal of American Hawk to be almost lumping Catholics together with Christians. Would American Hawk's support for freedom of religion go so far as to consider voting for non-Christians such as Giuliani and Brownback?

GravatarI don't think "we" necessarily store our information on "their" computers.

Well, Newitz's column deals mostly with the voluntary storing of information via online word processing, photo storage, etc etc. And how easily all this (and the involuntarily stored info, like bank accounts, etc) can be wiped out by a completely random act.

She's always an interesting read...

GravatarEvery single one. This whole "small government Repug" thing is a myth, like "judicial activism" is a myth. Or like "tax and spend Democrat" is a myth.

You're just not looking at it like a Repig.

The governement would be very small if it consisted only of the Preznit and his trusted advisors. If all your tax dollars went directly to defense contractors and nobody else.

Very, very small.

GravatarAnd how easily all this (and the involuntarily stored info, like bank accounts, etc) can be wiped out by a completely random act.

You mean like the 535gig worth of utterly useless and entirely personal information being stored on a Borg shared drive that everyone in the world has access to and that I damned near did wipe out deliberately yesterday? Including all the cheesy Grade 3 pictures of unknown peoples' children, marriage pictures, baby pictures, pictures of people four years ago eating lunch whilst team building and the multiple applications which somehow are now not only being stored on an open drive but are being USED and populated? You mean those pieces of information?

GravatarInstead, I bought THREE of the old fashion deep dish Pyrex pie pans, with the fluting -inside- the top edge and the little handles, from the World's Best General Mercantile and Resale, for $1.46 each and I don't care if the FBI knows it either. I bought 'em fair and square and they're mine. If the Feebs want borrow them, they may, but I will want a deposit.

GravatarIt turns out that Liberals are the cause of troops being in Iraq.

"At the end of the interview Obey again said he was sorry about his outburst then cut off questions, saying he needed to get to a hearing.

“I’m sorry that the frustration happened to erupt in that hall,” he said. “I wish it hadn’t. If these groups would inform people before they hit the Hill…we might have a better chance to have the votes to end this thing.” "

Correct. Cocksucking is all about giving.

GravatarRudy,

I think in a hunting/gathering society, Bush would have "had an accident" a long time ago. Everyone goes out to hunt the mastadon; Bush leads the charge into an anthill. Everyone goes out to gather nuts and berries, Bush attacks a batch of poison ivy. You can't afford leaders like Bush in a hunting/gathering society.

GravatarAssuming a Democratic POTUS in 2008, I would hope the new administration would find some important positions fo the Wilsons.

Perhaps Valerie Plame could be returned to the CIA in some high oversight position. Perhaps Joe Wilson could be made Special Assistant to the President for uncovering all the skulduggery and crimes committed by the previous POTUS and Veep Creep.

I'm sure this is true, and I'm also reasonably sure that the government could pressure those entities to turn that info over- since they've already demonstrated it by doing it!

I'm not sanguine about any of this, but for me it falls into one of those categories of Things I Can't Really Do Anything About. I think it may be too late, as far as information gathering by corporations goes - they already have us.

I do think the government has got to be stopped, if we are ever going to preserve what shreds of privacy are left. That's doable.

GravatarDear Atrios,

I read a lot of true things on the left-leaning side of the intertubes. Every day I read something I agree with whole-heartedly. Depending on the subject I may pound my fist on the table with glee or relief. And for a long time I've been reading and seeing things that make me think the long national nightmare of the Clenis and the feverish over-reaching idiocy of post-9/11, might be coming to an awkward, fumbling, too-long close. I've been reading a lot about the 2008 Presidential hopefuls and I've been noticing something significant in the distinction between the candidates on the left and the right. This post is the first time I've seen this burgeoning feeling so clearly articulated for me.

Moments like this are why your blog doesn't suck.

Thanks, Condor

GravatarTape of Padilla interrogation is missing By CURT ANDERSON, Associated Press Writer
Fri Mar 9, 6:26 PM ET

A videotape showing Pentagon officials' final interrogation of al-Qaida suspect Jose Padilla is missing, raising questions about whether federal prosecutors have lost other recordings and evidence in the case.

The tape is classified, but Padilla's attorneys said they believe something happened during that interrogation that could explain why Padilla does not trust them and suspects they are government agents.

Padilla attorney Anthony Natale said in court papers that the March 2, 2004, interrogation at the Navy brig in Charleston, S.C., could contain information the government conveyed to Padilla that "directly impacts upon his relationship with his attorneys."

Prosecutors and the Pentagon have said they cannot find the tape despite an intensive search.

GravatarAARP: isn't that the insurance profiteering group that sold out Medicare to the Bushboy/Gooper Congress in 2005 and claimed it was a way senior citizens could get their needed pharmaceuticals?

It was why I quit.

GravatarSpring's arrival is too tentative here, as if the damned place won't commit to it -- unless of course we get one of those heavenly two week foretastes that is immediately followed by a few final frosts.

The fact that they're being portrayed in a ridiculous fashion (as opposed to being painted in malevolent tones, like would have been the case a couple of years ago) reassures me that their day really is done.

Why should the US care about the rights of Iraqi women when they're trying to take away the rights of American women?

I've discovered I need to file my email inbox regularly. It tries to download the whole thing and if it soesn't have enough memory it just gives up, rather than just downloading what it has space for.
So I have to move all the old stuff out of the inbox.

Gravatar"Prosecutors and the Pentagon have said they cannot find the tape despite an intensive search."

Convenient, isn't it? So much is "lost" or "classified for security" reasons, it makes me sick.

GravatarI always forget that email builds up at comcast whether I pay any attention to it whatsoever, and by the time I remember deleting it all is SO tedious!

Spring here is pretty much just a 3-month block of time on the calendar (thank you, Labrador Current), but even with the rotten climate, I appreciate the lengthening days.

padilla is the the canary in the murkin judicial coalmine...

(extending the avian metaphor) he's a dead duck at a turkey shoot; took the bird of paradise right up his nose; his goose is cooked...

GravatarThe thing that seems to attract people to conservatism, apart from fear of change (and of most everything else besides) is the not-unrelated desire for certitude.

Canon is what conservatives want. A creed, some dogma. Truthiness. So, while it may be that they suspect that the Warronterra was a shit idea, they still secretly hope they are wrong. They have lost faith in Bush, but they hope they are wrong. The alternative - that Conservatism itself is a shit idea, is too scary for them to contemplate. A world without certitude!

Remember Tweety and the rest's man-crush on Bush during the Codpiece Accomplished phase of his downfall? Today's conservative voter just wants to feel that shit again. They want another big strong fatherly war hero-type to hold them and tell them it's all going to be all right etc. They don't want to change, they want someone to restore their 'faith' in their silly dreams of a squeaky-clean security-blanket "America".

Just like communism, conservatism itself 'cannot fail', rather only unworthy people fail conservatism...
.

Gravatartoday's conservativism is not a movement, its a cult. As such, the followers can demand anything they want from those vying for grand wizard and even ranking member of the supreme council of genuflected psychopaths.
.

GravatarOh lord - the abortion argument. How old is this and still conservatives don't get it.

If I thought abortion was murder I wouldn't be for allowing it. Plain and simple. Based on the science, I don't think it's murder. I'm not for killing anyone, under any circumstance.

Now, reconcile the whole anti-abortion, pro-war, pro-death penalty thing, and we'll have something to talk about.

And please, really think about it before coming back with anything. Conservatives tend to let emotions get in the way of their arguments, with explains the whole abortion problem very well.

GravatarWhat you call "weird" I call "authoritarian." Funny how all conservative roads lead to that political philosophy.

GravatarWithout Conservative Authoritarian parenting there would be nobody dancing for singles at "Shakers" tonight.

GravatarHmmm...it reminds me of what happened with the Democratic party in the 80's, when, all major problems having been solved once and for all, every candidate had to explicitly support "empowering" and "acknowledging the contributions of" successively teensier and progressivley louder fragments of the voting public, or risk those voters splintering off and going...where? To the Republicans?
