Simply "better" is not enough. Gore and Kerry were better than Dubya by a lot. They have to be better by a sufficient margin to overcome a hostile media, the turnout of a fanatical Republican base, and any election-gaming/vote-tampering that might occur.

I guess I agree with that, but I also think that her and Limbaugh and O'Reilly really don't believe anything that they say.
Yes, but the question was, with all the stupid and mean things she's said in the past which went by with no repercussions, does her calling Edwards a faggot now have consequences? My point being that now the papers who published her realize that so many of their readers aren't amused that they are finally calling her on it. So many people are just so damn sick of the rightwing cheerlead and smear squad and won't put up with it anymore. A lot of people just ignored her or remained quiet, but they just aren't doing that anymore.

Republicans are worse, AH. they like to kill real people, not clumps of nonviable cells. They like to avoid taxes and yet utilize the public sector for their own greed and gain, and build monarchial dynasties that destroy the Republic. They like to ignore death and destruction caused by global warming because of the same short-sighted greed that has them flouting the laws of the land and dumping the tax burden on those who can least afford it. They use phony chritianity and force it on the public to manipulate the uneducated and fearful, and they hate religious freedom with a passion. Republicans, as you prove here, have no moral centers, and will lie even when there's no need to. And, as you have shown so well, they lie to themselves, as sick as can be. Greedy, murderous, egotistical subhumans make up the bulk of the ReNAMBLAcan party, which is why we must necessarily destroy it for America to survive.

"Polar bears, sea ice and global warming are taboo subjects, at least in public, for some U.S. scientists attending meetings abroad, environmental groups and a top federal wildlife official said on Thursday.[..]
The matter came to light in e-mails from the Fish and Wildlife Service that were distributed by the Natural Resources Defense Council and the Center for Biological Diversity, both environmental groups.
Listed as a "new requirement" for foreign travelers on U.S. government business, the memo says that requests for foreign travel "involving or potentially involving climate change, sea ice, and/or polar bears" require special handling, including notice of who will be the official spokesman for the trip.[..]
Two accompanying memos were offered as examples of these kinds of assurance. Both included the line that the traveler "understands the administration's position on climate change, polar bears, and sea ice and will not be speaking on or responding to these issues." http://www.crooksandliars.com/

For years now we've been told that a lot of people won't vote for Democrats because we don't have the proper reverence for their family values and war fighting capabilities. But it turns out not to be true at all. These allegedly deeply principled Americans are perfectly willing to vote for hypocritical, law and order drag queens over a man whose voting record and worldview has been consistently conservative and it's because he has been a maverick, not that he isn't one now. You can be forgiven extra-marital affairs or being a social liberal in your past --- even being gay --- if you are loyal to the Party. McCain bucks the hierarchy and that is the one thing that Republicans will not tolerate.

i am of the mind that the Republicans might not WANT to field a good candidate. All the chickens are coming home to roost. In the next couple of years - 2008 on, especially - there's going to be a world of hurt. Much of that will stick to whomever's in office.
The smartest thing the GOP could do is run a sacrificial pawn and ALLOW a Democratic victory. Then use the next 4 years for the Mighty Wurlitzer to insist over and over that "It's all the damn Democrats' fault!"
After 4 years of Democrats having to fix their messes and take their blame, run again.

And we have got to get a message through to every soldier, every family member, every friend of soldier, that the Republican Party, the Republican-dominated Congress has absolutely been the worst thing that has happened to the United States Army and the United States Marine Corps."
Paul D. Eaton, Maj. Gen. U.S. Army (Ret.) on this week's Real Time with Bill Maher
What they are sincere about is preserving their privlieged positions in the culture.
whether religious or financial, or social, or political in nature, what these soi disant 'conservatives' worry about conserving is their tenuous hold on the machineries--and the rewards-- of power...
as long as each can exercise the privileges of power in their exclusive domains, they'll make any alliances necessary, do any deeds, break (or better yet, enact) any law.
if one is not regarding them, not treating them, not opposing them in this full knowledge, they will prosper...

BoBo, from digby:
DAVID BROOKS: I know a lot of very socially conservative people who want Rudy Giuliani. They know where he stands on abortion and gay marriage. They know all that stuff. But they like him because they think he's a fighter.
And they buy the story, which he tells quite well, that he fought liberals in New York, he even fought my newspaper, which goes a long way in the Republican Party. And so they like that idea, and so they're willing to support him.
They say, "He may not be a great guy, he may not agree with us, but we need that kind of guy now." So his lead is serious. I'm not sure it will hold up. His campaign is very poorly developed, but he is now the front-runner, with the support of a lot of social conservatives who will stay with him, I think.

In order to be a conservative these days, you have to the ability to state that 2+2=5 with a straight face...
In the end the Party would announce that two and two made five, and you would have to believe it. It was inevitable that they should make that claim sooner or later: the logic of their position demanded it. Not merely the validity of experience, but the very existence of external reality, was tacitly denied by their philosophy. The heresy of heresies was common sense. And what was terrifiying was not that they would kill you for thinking otherwise, but that they might be right. For, after all, how do we know that two and two make four? Or that the force of gravity works? Or that the past is unchangeable? If both the past and the external world exist only in the mind, and if the mind itself is controllable—what then?
George Orwell, 1984.

one thing that bothers me about these contemporary 'conservatives' is their eagerness to give up basic rights and allow the government to peek into many parts of their life. I actually hear people calling in to C-Span saying things like "If you aren't doing anything wrong then why do you care?" and "They're doing it to keep America safe." At every new revelation they sit back and take the intrusion of government into their life to feel a little safer. All of my life I've heard that one of the hallmarks of conservative ideals was to not have government snooping into your actions. What cowards these 'conservatives' have become.

My mom is one of those people and it really is strange to see up-close in action. She comes from an old Kennedy-style democratic Massachusetts family, but somewhere along the way she went off the rails; and now her driving political instinct really is hating liberals. Period. She could care less about the gays or abortion (she's down for gay marriage and feels abortion should be easily accessed) but she is rabidly anti-tax and immigrant. She's all over the place, really; but ultimately satisfied only by a candidate who shares and feeds her fevor for making fun of liberals and proving them wrong and stupid. She LOVES that shit. Even when it comes to things like 'the gays' or abortion that she is as far from the conservative movement as possible, she still enjoys seeing someone from there humiliate a liberal on the subject. I don't know what it gives those people... something powerful.

Tena I am a Democrat but people on all blogs should be "adult enough" to listen and hear all sides of every issue whether they agree or not. Diversity of opinion is not to be one-sided...
i cannot speak for anyone else, but as for me?
i attend to the utterances of opposing points of view long enough to recognize whether the viewpoint ins new and original or the mere reiteration of talking points i have already considered and--yes--dismissed.
i listen to discover whether the discourse reveals malice, or stupidity, or ignorance (the latter two of course not being synonymous), and i decide upon my strategy of reply: respect? or riposte...

They do not sit and listen to everyone's phone calls but all phone calls are recorded into a system for later usage....so yes, they tape all phone calls in a system but they do not necessarily listen unless they have a reason or the situation arises. Anyone who has ever been to an antiwar rally or protest or has written a letter to the Editor surely has had their calls listened to. And all Internet activity is recorded, documented, and stored into a huge system for usage at an date the government chooses and none of you will know it and this includes your medical and bank records.
The real reason behind those "discount" cards are for the government working with the corporations and stores to track all your purchaes and someday to ne used against you if you are eating the wrong foods and that your insurance companies would not pay if they knew you were not obeying the doctor's orders.
Yes, these systems are all gonna be used to blackmail all of you in the future and they will know what you think of the government as well if they start to open up prison camps already being used for such purposes.

The Bureau never has, since the days when J. Edgar Hoover directed it as a personal feifdom.
THAT'S why such agencies are to be distrusted, and their powers minimalized. In all human history, the spies and enforcers ALWAYS end up private kingdoms devoted to their own power.
as someone pointed out, the "conservatives" used to think this. But, as an honest Republican of my acquaintence said, "Resistance to big governemtn lasts until you have your hands on the control levers of a big government".

one thing that bothers me about these contemporary 'conservatives' is their eagerness to give up basic rights and allow the government to peek into many parts of their life.
Gingrich is still saying that the 9th circuit court of appeals should be abolished, and that people should be prepared to sacrifice any rights, to support the war on terra.
This is not new, though. The right has long depended on the left to preserve the right's liberties. c.f., the virtually normal fifth columnist.

Review of tonight's sci-fi thriller 'EarthStorm'
This is an embarrassment to Canadian film making (not like this is not a regular occurrence). The acting is atrocious, but ultimately the blame falls on the editing. Anyone who knows anything about film-making knows that even an adequate editor can make gold out of...well you know what I'm saying. I couldn't watch more than 20 minutes. It is sad that this is what limited Canadian funding decided to green light. I say boo.
I try NOT to think about privacy issues too much. I simply assume that everywhere I go, everything I do, and everything that I am is capable of being recorded and analyzed.
The problem is that I am just so damned boring.

All of my life I've heard that one of the hallmarks of conservative ideals was to not have government snooping into your actions.
Conservatism has always had a large measure of authoritarianism and law'n'order bullying big government, so long as the bullying was done against 'those' people - furrniners, hippies, 'free-thinkers', consumers of recreational drugs not legalized by the state and sold by big corporations during football games and such - and not business regulations against the Rotary Club types.
Libertarians, who put minimal, open-book government at the center of their philosophy, get absolutely no respect from me if they still support the Chimp and Dick the Sick -- the most arrogant, secretive, authoritarian and anti-libertarian government in living memory.

I try NOT to think about privacy issues too much. I simply assume that everywhere I go, everything I do, and everything that I am is capable of being recorded and analyzed.
"I would call our diplomacy quiet and effective diplomacy — diplomacy all aimed at helping people, aimed at elevating the human condition, aimed at expressing the great compassion of the American people," Bush said at a joint news conference with Uruguayan President Tabare Vazquez.
Judging from the response in the street, I don't think his quiet diplomacy's working very well.

"Afghanistan's 'Hard Mission' Slips Away
A Canadian parliamentary panel has taken an unvarnished look at the war in Afghanistan and concluded that it is a "hard mission" that is slipping out of control. The legislators fault heavy-handed U.S. tactics for alienating the population and an inadequate NATO commitment to pacify the country. The Canadian report represents a grim bookend to the Iraq Study Group's assessment of a "grave and deteriorating" situation in Iraq. Both fronts are now in danger of being lost. Conservatism has always had a large measure of authoritarianism and law'n'order bullying big government, so long as the bullying was done against 'those' people - furrniners, hippies, 'free-thinkers', consumers of recreational drugs not legalized by the state and sold by big corporations during football games and such - and not business regulations against the Rotary Club types

"...libertarianism has always been utterly bereft of any moral authority."
MANY years ago, Ayn Rand gave a speech at the Ford Hall Forum, here in Boston.
She said:"If you want to waste your time and money helping the handicapped, we will not stop you."
You cannot begin to imagine the hate and contempt that dripped from each syllable of 'handicapped.'
The loathing for the untermensch, the life unworthy of life.
And that any rational being would even consider for a moment spending time and money to help the weak, well, it was just beyond her comprehension.

I'm sure that if Jung was around today he would see Gooper monolithic thinking as some kind of archaic mental archetype that was ingrained in homo sapiens during their "hunter/gatherer" period and that persists in those who remain evolutionary throwbacks.
it would be the dark side of an archetype. the negative side.

All of y'all do know that the FBI's computer equipment is reputed to be outdated, outmoded and not very good, right? So how in the hell will they sift through sheer amount of data that's out there? It's not just your old vacation photos on the internets - it's a gazillion people's old vacation photos.
It's staggering.

You are absolutely correct. They are not my concern. It is the private corporations that worry me - the banks, the research people, the contractors: these people are very good and can find out anything they want to know about anyone at anytime.

Dear Atrios,
I read a lot of true things on the left-leaning side of the intertubes. Every day I read something I agree with whole-heartedly. Depending on the subject I may pound my fist on the table with glee or relief. And for a long time I've been reading and seeing things that make me think the long national nightmare of the Clenis and the feverish over-reaching idiocy of post-9/11, might be coming to an awkward, fumbling, too-long close. I've been reading a lot about the 2008 Presidential hopefuls and I've been noticing something significant in the distinction between the candidates on the left and the right. This post is the first time I've seen this burgeoning feeling so clearly articulated for me.

Tape of Padilla interrogation is missing By CURT ANDERSON, Associated Press Writer
Fri Mar 9, 6:26 PM ET
A videotape showing Pentagon officials' final interrogation of al-Qaida suspect Jose Padilla is missing, raising questions about whether federal prosecutors have lost other recordings and evidence in the case.
The tape is classified, but Padilla's attorneys said they believe something happened during that interrogation that could explain why Padilla does not trust them and suspects they are government agents.
Padilla attorney Anthony Natale said in court papers that the March 2, 2004, interrogation at the Navy brig in Charleston, S.C., could contain information the government conveyed to Padilla that "directly impacts upon his relationship with his attorneys."
Prosecutors and the Pentagon have said they cannot find the tape despite an intensive search.

The thing that seems to attract people to conservatism, apart from fear of change (and of most everything else besides) is the not-unrelated desire for certitude.
Canon is what conservatives want. A creed, some dogma. Truthiness. So, while it may be that they suspect that the Warronterra was a shit idea, they still secretly hope they are wrong. They have lost faith in Bush, but they hope they are wrong. The alternative - that Conservatism itself is a shit idea, is too scary for them to contemplate. A world without certitude!
Remember Tweety and the rest's man-crush on Bush during the Codpiece Accomplished phase of his downfall? Today's conservative voter just wants to feel that shit again. They want another big strong fatherly war hero-type to hold them and tell them it's all going to be all right etc. They don't want to change, they want someone to restore their 'faith' in their silly dreams of a squeaky-clean security-blanket "America".
Just like communism, conservatism itself 'cannot fail', rather only unworthy people fail conservatism...

Oh lord - the abortion argument. How old is this and still conservatives don't get it.
If I thought abortion was murder I wouldn't be for allowing it. Plain and simple. Based on the science, I don't think it's murder. I'm not for killing anyone, under any circumstance.
Now, reconcile the whole anti-abortion, pro-war, pro-death penalty thing, and we'll have something to talk about.
And please, really think about it before coming back with anything. Conservatives tend to let emotions get in the way of their arguments, with explains the whole abortion problem very well.

Hmmm...it reminds me of what happened with the Democratic party in the 80's, when, all major problems having been solved once and for all, every candidate had to explicitly support "empowering" and "acknowledging the contributions of" successively teensier and progressivley louder fragments of the voting public, or risk those voters splintering off and going...where?
