Gravatar...when will satire be safe again?

GravatarGrounds for impeachment, me thinks.

GravatarDarryl--It's a shame that the neocon regime made satire irrelevant.

GravatarYes, to first question in second article. yes, BushCo has used DOJ to go against political enemies. D'uh.

GravatarUnless of course the perps can prove they're Republican, then it's all okay.

As Tom Lehrer said, satire died the day Henry Kissinger won the Nobel Peace Prize.

I used to make jokes that our recent atmospheric, oceanic, and lithospheric disturbances were a result of Dormammu's (or Cthulhu's) attempts to enter our universe through a hyperdimensional, transtemporal portal.

But the recent acceleration in changing our clocks has forced me to realize this might be true!

GravatarRove on Cspan last night said his family was apolitical. His Dad wouldn't say who he voted for and his mom would vote for whoever the kids favored. Rove says the children liked the republicans in '74, so mom voted a straight republican ticket that year. Another year the kids liked eldridge cleaver, so mom voted for him.

GravatarDrum posted this earlier:

In statewide and federal cases they found a total of 66 investigations. Here's the breakdown:

*

Democrats: 36
*

Republicans: 30

This is roughly what you'd expect. Democrats are slightly overrepresented compared to their actual numbers, but only by a bit. There's nothing fishy. But the numbers for local cases paint a very different story. They found 309 investigations, broken down as follows:

Democrats: 262
Republicans: 37
Independents: 10
Now isn't that odd? At the local level, even though both parties make up about half of all elected officials, Democrats get hammered and Republicans are left alone. Shields and Cragan offer up the following hypothesis:
We believe that this tremendous disparity is politically motivated and it occurs because the local (non-statewide and non-Congressional) investigations occur under the radar of a diligent national press. Each instance is treated by a local beat reporter as an isolated case that is only of local interest....[Conversely] because the investigations of state-wide and federal elected officials and candidates occurred within the radar of the national press, there was little room for nefarious, out-of-line investigations for political purposes on the part of the Bush Justice Department.

Well, then why do they even mention voting at all?

And why are the states responsible for federal elections?

Inquiring minds want to know.

GravatarYour gun rights ar assured, but your right to vote isn't.

You'll also note we have a number of amendments that deny certain bars to voting. Our assumption is that the right to vote is fundamental. You know, because there are elections and stuff.

GravatarOur assumption is that the right to vote is fundamental.

then why can't felons vote?

Gravatar
It's gone from thinking this was just an effort to propel GOP lawyers up the greasy pole, but now it looks like the purge was aimed at people who, for shame, thought criminal GOPpers ought to be investigated.

Moreover, the purged also thought that Democrats should not be investigated when there wasn't any evidence to justify it.

GravatarThe Habeas Corpus thing just fucking shocked me.

My fantasy is when a Democrat becomes president the first thing he (or she does) is declare the highest-ranking republican an enemy of the state and imprison him. After the shitstorm and about a week of imprisonment, the republican is then released and the Democrat says, "See what a bad idea all of this was? Undo this now."

I know it'll never happen, but I can dream.

GravatarBlair and NuLab have being doing their best to criminalize human behavior and stifle dissent.

GravatarWatergate 4!

GravatarWell, then why do they even mention voting at all?

Because it forms the basis of how we select the people in the Federal government, so there has to be some coordination.

And why are the states responsible for federal elections?

Because that's where all elections happen. Note that we didn't even have direct election of Senators for a long time, and still don't for Prez. All that stuff was left to State leg. Reason being they wanted the Feds to be beholden to the States. Part of the strong state government approach pre-Civil War.

Gravatartrifecta, how are you and your family doing?

Gravatarand doing their best to shackle the population to the state capitalist system.

Gravatarhttp://www.usatoday.com/news/was...bush- poll_N.htm

WASHINGTON — President Bush, in a bitter showdown with Congress over Iraq, has crept up a speck from an all-time low in his job approval rating. But his standing is the weakest of any second-term president at this point in 56 years.
The numbers in the latest AP-Ipsos poll gave the White House little reason for cheer as Bush opened a week-long visit to Latin America to bolster U.S. influence in the face of rising anti-American sentiment.

Weighed down by the unpopular war in Iraq, which is about to begin its fifth year, and opposition to his decision to send more troops into combat, Bush had an approval rating of 35% in early March. Still, that was up from 32% in February when his rating was tied for an all time low in AP-Ipsos polling...

By Gallup's measure, Bush's numbers are the lowest for any president in the third March of his second term since Harry Truman in March, 1951, when his approval rating was 28%.

The comparable numbers for other second-term presidents at this point were: Clinton 65% in March 1999, Reagan 45% in March 1987, Johnson 46% in March 1967 and Eisenhower 50% in March 1959.

Pretty much. Go see that note I posted. It's from the site I cite whenever the Constitution comes up.

GravatarOlmert 'planned Lebanon war before soldiers' kidnap'
Ehud Olmert's decision to go to war in Lebanon in response to abductions of soldiers was taken as early as March 2006, according to a leak of his evidence to the commission investigating the war.

The report means that the military strategy was decided more than three months before it was triggered by Hizbollah's abductions of two soldiers on Israel's northern border in July. Israeli officials said this was broadly in line with what the Prime Minister has already told the cabinet.
(snip)
The Israeli military said last night it was looking into a report by the Israeli human rights group B'Tselem that it used an 11-year-old girl, a 15-year-old boy and a 24-year-old man as "human shields" while searching for gunmen in its sweep of Nablus last month.

GravatarWhen I was a kid, a van full of high school kids got hit by a train at a train crossing, killing (IIRC) six of them. The funerals went on for days.

It didn't even get mentioned on the TV news station 50 miles away.

GravatarDevizes Castle once gave shelter to Matilda, who was being besieged by her cousin Stephen of Blois and she escaped him by pretending to be a corpse.

Very cool! I know all about Stephen and Matilda from reading that Brother Cadfael medieval mystery series.

GravatarMost people aren't familiar with Atlanta's peculiar highway designs.

Most people don't live in Atlanta.

Most people don't give a fucking shit.

GravatarI always liked Little Storping on the Swuff, but I think that was just in an episode of The Avengers.

GravatarThings I find that I was not looking for.

Honestly, I do not know what to think about the following link. However, under one of the jpegs, there is one titled more fossils. One of those fossils is identified as a giant tooth. I have other suggestions.

GravatarRepublicans love to fuck this country. Fucking Repug assraper country sucker assholemotherfucking pigdog capitalista gestapo shitass turdeaters. I hate them! Hate them hate them hate them hate them! I cannot even think beyond the hate I feel for them!!!!! I hate them so much that I love them and want to make the sweet sweet love to them so that I can have their babies.

I always liked Weston-super-Mare.

Whilst on my college choir tour in 1987, we spent three weeks in the hinterlands of England. One town where we sang was Budleigh Salterton, in Devon, IIRC.

My friend said he wanted to name a son "Budleigh Salterton" someday.

"Cool," says I, "then you can call him "Bud."

"No," my friend replied drolly, "I will call him Budleigh Salterton."

GravatarI think that if seventeen dwarves were killed in a tragic blimp accident, that would be newsworthy too.

And I think that several of the posters at Eschaton should consider issuing apologies the extended families of any left-handed ventriloquists who are killed in vending-machine mishaps in the greater London area, in the near future.

GravatarMost people aren't familiar with Atlanta's peculiar highway designs.

Which is why it's so goddamned important to educate every fucking person in the US about the Islamoatlantichighwaythreat.

In Ohio, NE Ohio has been known to ignore major 'stories' out of SW Ohio and vice versa. I found this funny, once I went to Cleveland for school.

GravatarBTW, congrats to all you Ducks fans!

Kicking the University of Spoiled Children's ass is always so sweet!!!

GravatarI believe CNN's corporate HQ is still in Atlanta, isn't it?

If so, they could have done a real service to their community by showing the dangers of that particular off-ramp.

But, no. They went for the blood and gore angle.

GravatarThe trolls are a dead species. Shoelimpy and analannie represent an obscure Xian sect that has died out -- the others are merely a waste of space, not to worry.

How can they possibly be real.

GravatarOT: Lord Levy has fuelled fears he is about to turn on the Labour Party after telling friends he is furious at the lack of public support from senior ministers.

The cash-for-honours investigation increasingly threatens to split Tony Blair's inner circle asunder in a welter of recrimination.

Friends and family of the two key suspects, Lord Levy and Ruth Turner, fought a battle for public sympathy last week as the show of unity began to unravel.

Now a cabinet minister close to Tony Blair's chief fundraiser has raised the stakes, telling The Independent on Sunday that Lord Levy "feels badly let down".

"He feels that he has given the party everything. He's helped raise between £60m and £80m for us. Without that money we might not be in government, and yet people are not standing by him.

Let's suppose there were no lights or signals at that crossing. There's your national story. There are still crossings all over the country with NO signals. That seems like a worthy cause for federal funding.

GravatarTHE NEWS (from Madsen) Perhaps one reason why they shouldn't be allowed to become so wealthy?

March 9-11, 2007 -- Antigua assault by Texas billionaire now engulfing other Caribbean nations. The story about Bush Texas crony "Sir" R. Allen Stanford buying up land in Antigua and attempting to take control of Leeward Islands Air Transport (LIAT) is having repercussions beyond Antigua and Barbuda. The Prime Minister of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Dr. Ralph Gonsalves of the Unity Labour Party, a one-time Marxist professor at the University of the West Indies who is nicknamed "Comrade Ralph," has provided details to Stanford's attempt to acquire LIAT:

However, political leaders in Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines are already smelling a rat. WMR previously reported on Stanford's ties to Bush and the GOP and U.S. ambassador to Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean, Mary Ourisman, being a professional board member and wealthy contributor for the Bush administration. We have also learned that Stanford flew members of the U.S. Congress to Antigua on his private jet for junkets.

GravatarInterstate highway accident=national story.

Not necessarily.

Bad design of one exit does not necessarily correlate to any other exit.

Gravatar Blair is called to account over abandoned troops

British soldiers returning from war are suffering unprecedented levels of mental health problems amid claims that the long-standing "military covenant" guaranteeing them proper care is in tatters.

More than 21,000 full-time servicemen and women who have served in Iraq, as well as army reservists, have developed anxiety and depression, an Independent on Sunday investigation can reveal today.

Official figures suggest two dozen military personnel have killed themselves since the invasion of Iraq in March 2003 a figure which includes 17 confirmed suicides and six where inquests are pending. Combat Stress, the charity for war veterans suffering from mental problems, has warned that it is seeing an annual rise of 26 per cent in its caseload; more than 1,000 former soldiers are homeless.

GravatarThe tag line on their blog is “Our nation must come together to unite” - George W. Bush.

Coming togther, while sweet, is not essential to the building and maintenance of a mature, loving relationship.

GravatarThis is absolutely the way it once was.

We had at least three deaths per year at poorly signaled railroad crossings when I was in junior high and high school. Usually drunk teenagers, usually all at once.

Barely made the "big city" paper 20 miles out. The SF Chronicle? Never. TV news? Never.

GravatarFuck the newsmakers! They are fucking fucky pants liars who lie to the American people and try to fuck the world over.

Wow... I knew the newsmakers were liars, but now come to find out that they're actually fucking fucky pants liars... it's too much; I can't wrap my head around it. But it's coming from Terry C-- the real Terry C, mind you-- so it must be the truth.

This is really bad-- it changes everything. I'm not sure there's a way to beat fucking fucky pants liars.

GravatarWhilst on my college choir tour in 1987, we spent three weeks in the hinterlands of England. One town where we sang was Budleigh Salterton, in Devon, IIRC.

Inexplicably, I always wanted a daughter, whom I would name Amaranth Victoria.

I have absolutely no idea.

GravatarI hate Bush. All bush. Presidents named Bush, governors named bush, little bushy trees, women, shrubs, they encompass all that is wrong and evil in this world. Hate is all I have, hate is all I am. Impeach Libby! Hang Cheney for Treason! Kill Condi!

GravatarPeople are always getting killed by trains in NJ. Someone got killed 2 days ago, but CNN owes them an apology for not broadcasting the story.
And in this wierd story a few months ago, a person got killed by a train, so a second train was sent to transfer the passengers to, and that train struck and killed a second person. A lot more interesting than a bus accident, if you ask me.

GravatarInterstate highway accident=national story.

Um. No. Otherwise the evening infotainment shows are going to be chock full of flipped-semis in L.A. blocking the three right-hand lanes.

Gravatar And then the Atriots engage in one of their favorite games, which is to huddle and discuss who the "troll" might actually be, because in their mind there are only one or two people who come to "their" site and disagree with them. But an AU official said they had been paid in January.

Nurredin Mezzni said the African Union was facing financial difficulties and other staff were also affected.

Note for Americans and other aliens: Milton Keynes is a new city approximately halfway between London and Birmingham. It was built to be modern, efficient, healthy, and all in all, a pleasant place to live. Many Britons find this amusing.

GravatarWoody, I sent it to your link at your blog. It was about what if anything you know about Dominici and the 900 mile right of way/easement litigation between the Navajo tribe and the El Paso Natural Gas Co.

I learned about this from an excellent two day seminar on "doing business in Indian Country" sponsored by the Muscogee Creek Nation in Okmulgee last week. I was just blown away with how excellent it was.

I questioned the professor about the political implications and wanted a NM person to see what's up with Dominici, seeing how he's already known to be involved in the US Attorney firings, how might he have been manipulating that 2005 Energy Whatever Act that favored the bidness industries over the tribe, OR, was he taking some of that sweet, sweet Abramoff Indian money to work both sides of the street, so to speak.

I figured you'd know.

Rumsfeld and Top GOP Figures Profited from Privatization of VA Hospital, CIA Contractors

A large global hedge fund, Cerberus Capital Management (dba, Cerberus-Gabriel), is at the center of an emerging Pentagon and CIA contracting scandal that has the attention of three Congressional Committees.

In each case, the companies under investigation have links to prominent GOP figures, including Vice President Dick Cheney, former Vice President Dan Quayle, former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, and several Republican Congressmen indicted for corruption involving kickbacks from defense contractors. The Republican Congressional Campaign Commitee (RCCC) has also received substantial contributions from conservative fund managers running Cerberus, a virually unregulated $30 billion hedge fund, which owns the second largest bank in Israel.

This scandal involves the mismanagement of VA hospital facilities privatized during the Bush-Cheney Administration, as well as intelligence abuses by private CIA contractors.

Gravatarif your from Wiltshire and especially Devizes, your known as a Moonrakers.

Moonrakers is the colloquial name for people from Wiltshire. This refers to a folk story set in the time when smuggling was a significant industry in rural England. The story goes that some local people had hidden contraband goods from customs officers in a pond. While trying to retrieve it at night, they were caught by the revenue men, but explained by pointing to the moon's reflection and saying they were trying to rake in a cheese. The excise men, thinking they were simple, laughed at them and went on their way.
