George Will is calling Wilson the most discredited man in the whole leak case. He repeated the lie that Wilson said Cheney sent him and both David Corn and George Stephanopoulos said, in unison, "he never said that." Steph was even irritated when he corrected Will. Good. It's about time.
But Will and his ilk know it's not true and repeat it anyway, alomg with numerous other falsehoods. They are confident that not all their lies will be corrected so they are playing a war of attrition. Steph knows this, hence his irritation. But why have on the panel a serial liar and propagandist? A little something underneath the radar for most. The current administration is planning on -eliminating- all funding for urban clinics for Native Americans - "The urban clinics are managed by contractors with runding from the Indian Health Service." That's a big $32.7million. Just for now, the clinics suddenly are being ordered to turn away any Native American without 'federal documentation'. The weasel comment: Deputy Assistant Attorney General C. Frederick Beckner III tells us, "Under the Supreme Court's decisions, there is a substantial likelihood that legislation providing special benefits based on something other than membership or equivalent affiliation with a federally recognized tribe might be regarded by the cours as a racial classification subject to strict constitutional scrutiny." Yeah.

Bobo takes the presents his version of the histoy of the Liberals ve. the Neo-Liberals:
http://select.nytimes.com/2007/0...1brooks.html?
hp
"In the early days, the neoliberals coalesced around two small magazines, The New Republic and The Washington Monthly. They represented, first of all, a change in intellectual tone. While the old liberals could be earnest and self-righteous, the neoliberals were sprightly and lampooning. While the old liberals valued solidarity, the neoliberals loved to argue among themselves, showing off the rhetorical skills many had honed in Harvard dining halls."
Ooooo. Ouch. You got use on the mat with those punches. You go,Bobo.

Note to Bill Maher: please don't invite Roseanne on your show ever again. The only worse show biz guest was Robin Williams.
-------------
I have a very low tolerance level for Roseanne. However, she is right on target with the fact that the forged documents are at the heart of this matter.
The effort to smear Wilson preceded his July op-ed. It was in response to the earlier (May) article by Kristoff which reported that the former ambassador had discovered they were forged and reported as much:
"The envoy's debunking of the forgery was passed around the administration and seemed to be accepted — except that President Bush and the State Department kept citing it anyway."
http://www.cnn.com/2003/US/05/06...06/nyt.kristof/
Cheney saw Wilson as a threat to expose him as the person who lied about the evidence and possibly even ordered up the forgeries. That is why they tried to smear Wilson even after they admitted he was right about the 16 words. His op-ed did not blame Cheney for the forgeries but Cheney launched a preemptive strike against him and the CIA to scare them away from making that charge.

What the hell is wrong with Roseanne? She's a great guest and she's dead right about everything she's been saying.
She really believes in trying to help the working class.
And yeah she was dead right about the documents that were forged and used to lie us into war.
I'm a fan of hers, I don't care. Her show was one of the best things on network TV. John Goodman - I love him. Great cast and she's got balls.

Bobo's conclusion:
http://select.nytimes.com/2007/0...1brooks.html?
hp
"The left, which has the momentum, is growing more uniform and coming to look more like its old, pre-neoliberal self. The right is growing more fractious."
I was wrong about two factions of liberals. According to Bobo, there are three divisions: Old Liberal, Neo-Liberal, and young blogging liberals.
Bobo's score categories:
Old fart points for "fractious"
Readers Digest wannabe points for "sprightly"
Dead Tree Lover points for a long winded paragraph on blogs
Reference to Joe Klein = triple points.
I'll tabulate the score and publish the results later.
Shut up, Bobo.

LA Times
...McKay, the U.S. attorney in Seattle, found himself in the midst of the contested 2004 governor's race between Republican Dino Rossi and Democrat Chris Gregoire.
While the voting dispute was still in progress, McKay took a phone call from Ed Cassidy, chief of staff for Rep. Doc Hastings (R-Wash.), then the head of the House Ethics Committee.
McKay said Cassidy started to ask about what federal prosecutors were doing in the election dispute, but McKay cut him off, saying that going further could constitute obstruction of justice. Later, when McKay was interviewed by then-White House Counsel Harriet E. Miers and her deputy, William Kelly, for a possible judgeship, he said they criticized him for "mishandling" things during the recount.
He never got the judicial robes, and he lost his job as prosecutor as well.
Chief U.S. District Judge Robert S. Lasnik of Seattle praised McKay as a "superb U.S. attorney," and said that "for the Justice Department to suggest otherwise is just not fair."

And conservative activists seem especially conscious of the candidates' marital records. William A. "And I said, 'Oh, so we're going to have six marriages then?' " Donahue said.

Now here's where the blogosphere can make a difference. We can start examining all the us attorneys' actions to unearth the corrupt ones who were not fired (per Krugman.s thesis). Like this diraist over at orange satan's.
Check out the US Attorney in charge of the NH phone-jamming, Thomas J Colantuono. Does Gonzales give prizes for slow response to Republican dirty tricks? It took Colantuono's people more than a year before the FBI questioned their top/only suspect in the NH phone-jamming, a crime by Republicans.
But in other matters, Colantuono could move fast. Just before the 2004 elections, he moved fast to block Democrats from questioning phone-jamming suspects--and fast again to file corruption charges against a NH Democrat.
In 2006, right after the Democrats' landmark electoral victory, Colantuono also moved fast to shut down his phone-jamming enquiries, making a guilty plea deal with the last defendant that gave the Feds nothing and the Republicans everything. Let me back this sordid story up with more detail. ...

i give the Brits a pass on one thing: they call 'em "newsreaders". that's what they are, attractive people with good speaking voices to read the teleprompter.
There are only really a couple of programmes with the equivalent of anchors; newsreaders may tweak the language of scripts, but not wield any editoral control. Jon Snow's Channel 4 News and the BBC's Newsnight are different, but deliberately so.
Anyway, Katty Kay is basically a freelancer who was given the job to keep her amused while her husband was BBC Washington correspondent. She doesn't appear anywhere else.
ABC/BBC have agreements.
Yep, and the NewsHour and NBC have a deal with ITN. I remember watching the ABC evening news as part of BBC News 24, and being astonished at how even the venerable Peter Jennings would cover (or ignore) stories that had been done by the Beeb a few minutes earlier.

"Well, they fired that guy in Baltimore and he deserved it, so maybe this guy did too."
I've said it before and it's happening again: Specter will always feign outrage at the start of any scandal, so as to draw all media attention to him and lull the Dems into remaining silent. Then he will pronounce himself satisfied and the media will bury the story, since it's most outspoken critic has said there is nothing there.

Right. It's completely inappropriate to bring up the family lives of candidates who run on "family values", including, for example, Newt, Rudy, and Cheney. However, Broder can write all the stories he can type up about how often the Clintons sleep in the same bed or have dinner together.

Steph, the host, actually corrected George Will on his RNC-authorized lie about Wilson lying about Cheney sending Wilson to Niger.
Bobo made use of same RNC-authorized lie on NewsHour Friday night, and the host of that segment did not correct him. IIRC, Mark did, but, of course, it took time from his response to the issue.
WTF is wrong with these talk show hosts that they allow known lies to stand?????? Apparently on NewsHour it is Jim Lehrer's policy to not correct "guests" misstatements or even outright lies, but, ya know, Bobo is "regular." So correct his butt, OK?
And, for the record, Lehrer did once correct Bobo when he was spewing the RNC-authorized lie about why the morning after pill was ok'd by the Clinton FDA. He began the lie, Lehrer cut him off, and Bobo actually looked sheepish, like a little boy caught with his hand in the cookie jar. Bobo actually admitted the lie was, indeed, a lie. Later that evening, he did however revert to the RNC-authorized lie.
Perhaps "RNC-authorized lie" needs to become a catch phrase for any Dems appearing on talk shows. "Sorry, Mr. Repug Propagandist, the RNC may have authorized that lie, but the truth is X. You shouldn't tell lies to the public, whether authorized by the RNC or not...."

What, for that matter, would happen if Newt visited the USA on its sickbed, after a cancer operation, and told it he'd be divorcing it in favor of China?
Or waited until the US was at its mother's 84th birthday and then called the US up and said, I've got a mistress and I want a divorce?

That's cause the Clintons arent really a 'family'- forty years ago they associated with each other in anticipation of the 2008 election and it's all been nothing but politics.

Bob Schieffer of all people on CBS ripped into Fitzgerald, along the lines of "we don't know if Plame was covert, and we don't even know if a crime re Plame was committed."
There is zero doubt in my mind that Patrick Fitzgerald would dearly love to put Cheney and Rove away for the leak. I think his plan has been to follow the same strategy as in other high-profile cases (viz., George Ryan here in Illinois): squeeze the small fry on lesser charges, and get them to drop a dime on their bosses.
I do not believe this is over. I think that Fitzgerald was very happy that Walton was the judge, as he's a "long ball hitter"; the press has been full of "one year, two years max" that Scooter is gonna get. I don't think so. I think he's gonna get a minimum of five years, maybe seven, and he's gonna be inside in June. After a few months he'll be singing like a canary, unless Bush pardons him. If Bush pardons him, Congress may take over, much as they did after the Saturday Night Massacre (firing of Archibald Cox, Eliot Richardson and one other guy, done by, guess who, Robert Bork on behalf of his lord and master, Richard Nixon.)
And, of course, let's not forget the major cashectomy to be performed on all of 'em by the Wilsons.

I think that the point about the Libby conviction is being missed a bit. It is not that he is guilty or innocent for that has been decided. It is not that he committed a crime or not, for that is obvious. The problem the media has with this is that it is an indictment of the status quo. They are the ones who look guilty and fairly stupid. That is unacceptable hence the stupidity on parade.

British soldiers returning from war are suffering unprecedented levels of mental health problems amid claims that the long-standing "military covenant" guaranteeing them proper care is in tatters.
More than 21,000 full-time servicemen and women who have served in Iraq, as well as army reservists, have developed anxiety and depression, an Independent on Sunday investigation can reveal today.
Official figures suggest two dozen military personnel have killed themselves since the invasion of Iraq in March 2003 a figure which includes 17 confirmed suicides and six where inquests are pending. Combat Stress, the charity for war veterans suffering from mental problems, has warned that it is seeing an annual rise of 26 per cent in its caseload; more than 1,000 former soldiers are homeless.

So what is the latest on Gilliard? Last I heard he was in 'recovery' after surgery.
Apparently, they've kept the incision open for easy access, which (according to several medical types who have weighed in both at his site and at Kos) is not that uncommon in these situations. There was infection around the valve, and supposedly a valve replacement was performed, but no one seems to know if it was actually done.
Gilliard had a similar infection problem a couple of years ago. He's also got kidney problems and has been on dialysis, which contributes to his current problems.

OT: It was the television programme that set out to show that most of the world's climate scientists are misleading us when they say humanity is heating up the Earth by emitting carbon dioxide. And The Great Global Warming Swindle, screened by Channel 4 on Thursday night, convinced many viewers that it is indeed untrue that the gas is to blame for global warming.
But now the programme - and the channel - is facing a serious challenge to its own credibility after one of the most distinguished scientists that it featured said his views had been "grossly distorted" by the film, and made it clear that he believed human pollution did warm the climate.
Professor Carl Wunsch, professor of physical oceanography at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology said he had been "completely misrepresented" by the programme, and "totally misled" on its content. He added that he is considering making a formal complaint.

Not a secret genetic-engineering lab either; just natural resistance found in a few plants (apparently in Bolivia) and coca growers have been passing breeding material from them to each other at an incredible pace.
This being Wired of course they refer to it as "open-source distribution" of the resistant plants.... great journalism anyway, so of course it got no attention to speak of in the MSM.

Fred Thompson is thinking of jumping into the race. Here is what he thinks about Scooter Libby's case.
_Would pardon former White House aide I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby's conviction for perjury and obstruction of justice now, rather than waiting until all his appeals are exhausted. Libby was found guilty of perjury and obstruction in the investigation into the 2003 leak of CIA operative Valerie Plame's identity.
Libby is "bearing the political brunt of something that should've never come about," Thompson said, noting that "practically every witness at trial had inconsistent statements."
What a douchebag.

Two bomb attacks in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, have left at least 29 people dead, police said.
Nineteen people died in the Karrada district when a car bomb exploded near a truck carrying Shia pilgrims.
In a separate incident, a suicide bomber blew himself up on a minibus in eastern Baghdad, killing 10 people.
The latest violence comes a day after Baghdad hosted a conference on security, attended by world powers including the US, Syria and Iran.

Geez, this place is really a downer this morning. I can tell that when I feel the need to say something uplifting. . .
Okay, this is it: this firing of the federal prosecutors is (IMHO) going to deeply hurt the Bush Administration. They broke the law, they are lying about it: it goes all the way to the top. The Dems are in a position to investigate and find out. It is a bipartisan problem - the people they fired were REPUBLICANS in many cases.

In October 2002, as Congress was debating ceding it's Constitutional authority under Article I Section 8 to the President, Ohio Congressman Dennis Kucinich issued a pre-Iraq-war analysis of intelligence and information that was widely circulated to members of Congress. In his letter, he accurately predicted the situation in which America now finds itself.
He was right then, and he is right now. Unfortunately, for America, the bobbleheads, deliberately it seems, are not covering his candidacy for President. Instead they focus on the popular personalities with heaps of corporate cash at their disposal. Corporate money obviously trumps correct thinking in their world. Shame.
Here are a few of the things he predicted.
"This language is so broad that it would allow the President to order an attack against Iraq even when there is no material threat to the United States."
"A unilateral attack on Iraq by the United States will cause instability and chaos in the region and sow the seeds of future conflicts all over the world."
"Unilateral action against Iraq will cost the United States the support of the world community, adversely affecting the war on terrorism."
"There is no credible evidence that Iraq possesses weapons of mass destruction."
"There is no connection between Iraq and the events of 9/11."
Yet the "top tier" candidates even today still don't have an accurate view of the real situation. Didn't they read the Letter from Rep. Kucinich when he gave it to them in 2002? Maybe they should read it now. My feeling is that they are embarassed by their actions or inactions. In the most important vote that they will have made in their entire lifetimes, they failed to do the right thing. And now one of them likely will be our new President in 2009. That frightens me. The bobbleheads have the power to show Americans that they do have another choice. I don't expect tey will use it.
And it was Jesus who said, "Ye can not get good fruit from an evil tree." The illegal invasion and occupation of Iraq is that evil tree. It's based upon lies and violated Article VI of our Constitution, "All treaties" clause. Nothing good can come of it no matter how hard they try and spin it.
And this...
I have looked throughout the Constitution from beginning to end and back again and I cannot find the section that gives Congress the power to cede it's authority under Article I Setion 8 to the President or any other entity. How did Congress get that power? It's not in the Constitution!

Would pardon former White House aide I.

But there is a darker side to this green revolution, which argues for a cautious assessment of how big a role ethanol can play in filling the developed world's fuel tank. The prospect of a sudden surge in demand for ethanol is causing serious concerns even in Brazil.
The ethanol industry has been linked with air and water pollution on an epic scale, along with deforestation in both the Amazon and Atlantic rainforests, as well as the wholesale destruction of Brazil's unique savannah land.
Fabio Feldman, a leading Brazilian environmentalist and former member of Congress who helped to pass the law mandating a 23 per cent mix of ethanol to be added to all petroleum supplies in the country, believes that Brazil's trailblazing switch has had serious side effects.
"Some of the cane plantations are the size of European states, these vast monocultures have replaced important eco-systems," he said. "If you see the size of the plantations in the state of Sao Paolo they are oceans of sugar cane. In order to harvest you must burn the plantations which creates a serious air pollution problem in the city."
As I've mentioned previously, it is scary that ethanol is so politically appealing to both the R's and D's, since it has many downsides: the pollution and monoculture mentioned above, and its effect on worldwide food prices. The poor may once again be totally screwed by this rush to ethanol biofuel.
Very scary.

Lord Levy has fuelled fears he is about to turn on the Labour Party after telling friends he is furious at the lack of public support from senior ministers.
The cash-for-honours investigation increasingly threatens to split Tony Blair's inner circle asunder in a welter of recrimination.
Friends and family of the two key suspects, Lord Levy and Ruth Turner, fought a battle for public sympathy last week as the show of unity began to unravel.
Now a cabinet minister close to Tony Blair's chief fundraiser has raised the stakes, telling The Independent on Sunday that Lord Levy "feels badly let down".
"He feels that he has given the party everything. He's helped raise between £60m and £80m for us. Without that money we might not be in government, and yet people are not standing by him.
