Neologism just means new word, there's nothing derogatory about it. This article apparently isn't being targeted for deletion even, just merging into "Atrios". Don't sweat it.
It doesn't seem to mention the obvious pun tie-in to "FUs" though, which is too bad.

OT: but interesting, ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) -- Michigan basketball coach Tommy Amaker was fired Saturday following six seasons leading the program without an NCAA tournament appearance.
''I'm not going to make excuses,'' Amaker said in an interview before he was scheduled to appear at a news conference.
Before this season started, Amaker said it was fair to expect the Wolverines to reach the NCAA tournament. They ended up playing in the NIT for the third time in four years and were eliminated from that tournament two days ago

You have no idea how much I wish never to hear or read that term again. Dr. Plotke's final contention is that the district court erred by rejecting as irrelevant to the pretext issue her evidence of several incidents not directly related to the termination decision. These incidents include but are not limited to: referring to Dr. Plotke as "Jane" instead of "Dr."; calling her a "femi-Nazi" and "wire-head," aplt. app. at 315-16, 522, 631; advising her that she "should be quiet and not make [her]self noticed," id. at 316; remarking that her presence would prevent the all-male group from "sitting around drinking beer, smoking cigars, and farting" on a professional staff ride, id. at 521, 1028; comments that CAC was under pressure to hire a female historian; and disparaging Dr. Plotke's professional competence and yelling at her to "keep [her] mouth shut" in the presence of her peers and supervisor. Id. at 330. The district court held that these incidents "do not constitute direct evidence of gender discrimination," Plotke, 2002 WL 1461974, at *5, and that under McDonnell Douglas, they would only be considered if offered as pretext evidence on the issue of the falsity of defendant's stated reasons for termination. We disagree.

The Friedman Unit belongs on dkosopedia, really. Reading through the discussion at wikipedia about the FU page, there's some validity to the arguments of following the guidelines wikipedia has.
Better way to save the FU at wikipedia is to create a new entry for what Atrios is referencing, the magic fairy handclapping view of how Iraq will get better if it's just ignored for a period of time. And then the FU can be part of that.

Three chlorine gas attacks in Iraq are reported to have killed eight people and left hundreds injured, including six US troops.
Two of the attacks were near the city of Falluja, the third near Ramadi, west of Baghdad. Both areas are hotbeds of al-Qaeda militants.
Chlorine gas can cause severe burns to the throat and lungs and can kill after only a few breaths.
There were at least three such attacks in Iraq in February.
The BBC's Hugh Sykes, in Baghdad, describes the use of the gas as an unsettling and possibly ominous development that could greatly increase fear and anxiety.

Hundreds of ancient artefacts taken out of Afghanistan for safe-keeping - or looted - have been returned to Kabul's National Museum.
The artefacts were moved to Switzerland almost a decade ago to protect them during the civil war in Afghanistan.
The oldest artefact dates back 3,500 years and the collection includes carpet slippers and Buddha statues.
The most famous piece is a glass phallus believed to have been touched by Alexander the Great.

Oh, sure, Smoot has a bigshot in the family so they keep a drunken bridge roller 34 engineers know about, but they're gonna "merge" a unit that has long been in wider common use than virtually any other. Let's be completely realistic here. FU's have been in widespread use everywhere in numerous contexts whenever the U.S. has any sort of obligation in any regard to any citizen or group. Why don't they just eliminate Mom, Apple Pie, and Norman Rockwell while they are at it??? Sheesh.

Avant-garde theatre is under attack in Italy for pushing the boat out too far after police raided a Milan playhouse to save a lobster from being bludgeoned to death and eaten on stage.
Following complaints from animal rights groups, the first-night performance of Incident: Kill to Eat by Argentinian playwright Rodrigo García was broken up by three plainclothes officers who spared the lobster from an all-too-real death scene.
A full house was expecting to see García's examination of death and meat eating, during which an unlucky crustacean is suspended from a nylon cord and a microphone picks up the sounds of its squirming. In his programme notes, García, a former butcher, denounced the dishonesty of not killing what you eat. "You need plenty of imagination, and I don't have it, to feel the fear of death as you open a can of meatballs with peas in the kitchen at home," he wrote.
By the way, can anyone explain why Bush is asking for more emergency money for Iraq, four years into the occupation?

I am asking myself why the Attorney General and Deputy Attorney General are not making it a priority to retract the lies that have been told about my seven colleagues (they have essentially told the truth in my case). I do not know why the seven were fired. It no longer matters to them or me. We served at the pleasure of the President, we were asked to leave and we did.
But it did not have to do with their "performance". They all served loyally, professionally, ethically, and effectively. There is no evidence that performance was any consideration in these decisions at all.

He called himself Black Jesus but Steven Tari was a false prophet, according to police in Papua New Guinea, where the Bible school drop-out will face charges of murder and cannibalism after being captured in a jungle village.
Tari, the leader of an obscure cult with 6,000 followers, had been on the run since last June, when he escaped from custody with the help of a Lutheran pastor. Suspected of raping scores of girls and carrying out sacrificial killings, Tari eluded police by staying on the move and hiding in far-flung mountain villages.

yeah, Channel 5 gained a lot of cred by buying up American shows like CSI, Law and Order, NCIS, Greys Anatomy and House, its what Channel 4 used to be so good at before it went all reality show and declined in quality (and pushed most American shows onto their satellite channels).
when Channel 5 first appeared it was mostly known for its soft porn and crappy programmes.
I like the original CSI the best and CSI NY, CSI Miami is just silly.

The concept that underlies the necessity of designating the catch-all delay-of-discussion usage of "the next six months" as a Friedman Unit is well documented in that large and ever growing list of quotes. However, these quotes do not use the term "Friedman Unit" and as such cannot be considered documentation of the term's widespread acceptance -- its applicability, yes, acceptance sadly, no.

The service identifies six Arctic regions where data are insufficient to make a call on the population, including the aforementioned Baffin shores area.
Another six areas are listed as having stable counts, three experienced reduced numbers and two have seen their bears increase.
...
Of course, tracking polar bear populations is an inexact science.
They roam about, which lends itself to double counting, and they're not easy to identify from any distance.
Besides, polar bears do live on ice and satellite photos show the sea ice is down 7.7% in the last decade.

Signatures
The declaration begins: "As independent scientists concerned with atmospheric and climate problems, we...". As with the 1995 declaration, questions have been raised about the scientific background of the signers, and others have questioned the degree to which they can be deemed to be independent. Because many of those who signed the 1997 declaration also signed the 1995 declaration, the concerns raised by David Olinger and others after the 1995 declaration are still relevant.
The signers are generally described by Fred Singer and his supporters as climate scientists, although the current signers also include 25 weather presenters. One key report opposing the scientific credentials of the signers was a Danish Broadcasting Company TV special by Řjvind Hesselager.[4] Hesselager attempted to contact the declaration's 33 European signers and found that four of them could not be located, twelve denied ever having signed, and some had not even heard of the Leipzig Declaration. Those who verified signing included a medical doctor, a nuclear scientist, and an entomologist. After discounting the signers whose credentials were inflated, irrelevant, false, or unverifiable, Hesselager claimed that only 20 of the names on the list had any scientific connection with the study of climate change, and some of those names were known to have obtained grants from the oil and fuel industry, including the German coal industry and the government of Kuwait (a major oil exporter). As a result of Hesselager's report, Singer removed some, but not all, of the discredited signatures. The number of signatures on the document, according to the SEPP's own press releases, has declined from 140 (according to a December 1997 press release) to 105 (as of February 2003).
The SEPP's position is that "a few of the original signers did not have the 'proper' academic credentials - even though they understand the scientific climate issues quite well. To avoid this kind of smear, we want to restrict the Leipzig Declaration to signers with impeccable qualifications." To address the signer credibility issue, the SEPP has provided considerably more information about each signer on their website and lists the weather presenters separately from the other signers.

Sometimes I think it's like Bush's "What Would Clinton Do? I'll do the opposite." Global Warming is considered "leftist" (Al Gore, ya know, is a real radical progressive!), so all "true Americans" must be agin the very idea.
Same as any environmental issue. Until they decide they can make money at it. Such as the coal power plants in Texas, 4 of which will now be withdrawn from the permit process. A buyer for TXU decided it's green to be "green."

First, nonscientists generally do not want to bother with understanding the science. Claims of consensus relieve policy types, environmental advocates and politicians of any need to do so. Such claims also serve to intimidate the public and even scientists--especially those outside the area of climate dynamics.
Secondly, given that the question of human attribution is myth, its use in promoting visions of disaster constitutes nothing so much as a bait-and-switch scam. That is an inauspicious beginning to what Mr. Gore claims is not a political issue but a "moral" crusade.
Lastly, there is a clear attempt to establish truth not by scientific methods but by perpetual repetition. An earlier attempt at this was accompanied by tragedy. Perhaps Marx was right. This time around we may have farce--if we're lucky.

What the hell does this guy know anyway? Afterall, he's just the Chair of the Atmospheric Studies Dept. at MIT.
A) "A patch of ice doth not a winter make, nor a single swallow summer."
B) His argument is that "consensus" is a chimerical pursuit. Perhaps for research scientists, but not for politicians and people who must make decisions about the "real world." Eschewing consensus in those realms makes one sound very much like a "mad scientist" who wants to pursue science and damn the consequences.
C) If consensus truly is a chimerical pursuit, we need not worry about Dr. Lindzen's (or is it must "Mr."?) agreement or non-agreement. We don't need consensus, just a majority opinion. And we've got that.
D) Where, still, is the downside of what Gore proposes and champions?

Enquiring Minds, an FU in the USA is "4 to 6 months". In England and other early adopting countries, it was codified as the Standard Metric Friedman Unit of 6 months. The New Metric Friedman recently passed for International use by all countries not already using either the US or Standard Metric Friedman Units is 10 months, although in some nations the New Metric Friedman has been designated as 9 to 10 months, but these are generally obscure smaller island nations which recieve all of their news of the outside world from newspapers received on boats, and which have a distended or non-existant time sense to begin with. The International Committee has ruled however that usage of the 9 to 10 months standard by these nations does not violate the New Metric Friedman Unit standard, but that the NMFU is nonetheless officcially and formally defined as 10 months. Hope this helps.

There's a way to continue using the Friedman Unit (which would also accommodate any changes to the number of months):

I saw this earlier today but didn't have time to do anything about it. About 20 minutes ago, I went to the "Friedman Unit" entry again, which still indicated that it might be merged into the Atrios entry. So, I registered with Wikepedia to make my very first comment there, but by the time I finished registering, the "Friedman Unit" entry no longer stated that it might be merged. I find it hard to belive that the very prospect of my possibly commenting on the issue had such an intimidating effect, but what other possible explanation can there be?

Ah, wikipolitics. This happens a lot -- there's a vocal group on wikipedia that likes to merge articles together. It's sometimes misguided -- for one, short web pages score higher on readability; second, wikipedia's a work in progress and short, specific articles will develop with time if they're not deleted.
