Departing Delta CEO refusing bonuses
By Marilyn Adams
USA Today
Turning his back on a potentially lucrative payday, Delta Air Lines CEO Gerald Grinstein said Monday that he is refusing any stock, stock options or cash when the carrier emerges from bankruptcy.
Grinstein, who has led the United States' No. 3 airline since January 2004, said he wants Delta instead to invest what he would have gotten in post-bankruptcy bonuses, to be used for scholarships and emergency hardship assistance for Delta employees, families and retirees. Under a post-bankruptcy compensation plan unveiled Monday, Grinstein could have been expected to net about $10 million, including such bonuses, over about three years.
Delta hopes to exit bankruptcy in May. Grinstein, 74, who plans to retire this summer, said it wouldn't be right to take money intended as an incentive for future executive performance.
"I'm leaving, so it doesn't fit me," he said in an interview. Besides, he said, "Corporate pay packages have gotten out of control. It has become a salary derby out there."

I just love De Palma's film school reference to that scene in The Untouchables.
In the original, the Czarist troops cause the death of the baby cascading down the steps
De Palma remakes it so Andy Garcia, under fire, sticks out his foot at the last second, stoppng the carriage, saving the baby
De Palma steals like no other

An interesting fact:
The massacre on the steps is fictional, presumably created by Eisenstein for its dramatic venue and effect, as well as for propaganda and to demonize the Czar and the Imperial regime.[3] It is, however, based on the fact that there were widespread demonstrations in the area, sparked off by the arrival of the Potemkin in Odessa Harbour, and both the London Times and the resident British Consul reported that troops fired on the crowds with accompanying loss of life (the actual casualties are unrecorded).[citation needed] Film critic Roger Ebert writes, "That there was, in fact, no czarist massacre on the Odessa Steps scarcely diminishes the power of the scene ... It is ironic that [Eisenstein] did it so well that today the bloodshed on the Odessa steps is often referred to as if it really happened."[4]

The massacre on the steps is fictional,
Also the mutineers on the "Potemkin" were forced to flee across the Black Sea to Romania, where some remained, and others were returned to Russia where leaders were executed and others were imprisoned. Of course, the Revolution of 1905 as a whole had a similar fate, but it served (in Eisenstein's version) as an effective symbol of revolutionary commitment.

As a precautionary measure, Del Monte Pet Products is voluntarily recalling select product codes of its pet treat products sold under the Jerky Treats®, Gravy Train® Beef Sticks and Pounce Meaty Morsels® brands as well as select dog snack and wet dog food products sold under private label brands. A complete list of affected brands and products is below.
The Company took this voluntary recall action immediately after learning this morning from the FDA that wheat gluten supplied to Del Monte Pet Products from a specific manufacturing facility in China contained melamine. Melamine is a substance not approved for use in food. The FDA made this finding as part of its ongoing investigation into the recent pet food recall...
No other Del Monte Pet Products treats, biscuits or wet dog food products are impacted by this recall, and no Del Monte dry cat food, dry dog food, wet cat food or pouched pet foods are subject to this voluntary recall. The affected products comprise less than one-tenth of one percent of Del Monte Pet Products’ annual pet food and pet treat production.

A historic first Space Quidditch match came to a spectacular conclusion last night as astronaut Michael Lopez-Alegria caught the Golden Snitch to give the Americans a hard fought victory over the Russians. "The Russians used brilliant strategy, but only NASA had the T2KQMU (Thunderbolt 2000 Quidditch Maneuvering Unit)," commented Lopez-Alegria, pictured above squeezing the elusive Golden Snitch in his left hand.
GravatarSteve Simels--well, my Bruins lost. I can be irked, can't I?
Yeah that sucks, I was rooting for them too, they beat my Hoosiers, afterall, in a hard fought defensive masterpiece.
But I have to favor OSU partly because they are a big ten school, and partly because Conley and Odon hail from Indianapolis, about 50 miles up the road.

The Bears kept with the tradition of Chicago, and lost the Superbowl. But Chicagoans were happy they just got there, that's how they are. If the team just makes the playoffs, people there are happy.
The Bulls in the 1990's were an anomaly. That never happens in Chicago, a consistent championship team...

I guess I have a fondness for the Doors because it was the first album (actually casette tape) I bought from the bargain bin. Elektra had pressed way too many albums and tapes, and they showed up at Thrifty's for $1.99 or so.
My Boy Scout troop went on a weekend campout at the Presidio in San Francisco, and a couple of the guys talked me into bringing my cassette recorder/player and that tape (which was the only one I had). So we listened to it over and over camping out above the beach near Golden Gate Bridge.
Marcia Gay Harden: "You here to ask about my brother?"
Gabriel Byrne: "What other reason could there be for me to be here?"
MGH: "The oldest reason."
GB: "There are friendlier places to drink."

Complaints: "perfect hair forever" has moments that are arguably clever if you are familiar with a lot of anime, but mostly it is a case against total artistic freedom. Does anyone know Nico's cover of The End? I have it on vinyl and crack up every time I hear her, already in deepest register, sing "Mother, I want to..." and then descend into even deeper bullfrog "UGHGHGHGHGH"

Thailand's monarchy is without contest the most sincerely beloved in the world and in memory. The one rigid rule about travel to Thailand is that nobody, not paedos, not heroin smugglers, not the wealthiest visitor, gets away with a real or perceived slight of the Thai royal family. This was recently demonstrated in a humorous way. Surely now we will hear fairly balanced people talk about Thai barbarism and the importance of speechfreedom.

He actually has a really good prose style, and a vivid imagination. And he has a sense of humour, which is nice. I was comparing de Sade vs. Rand, and de Sade won, because of the qualities I mention. Rand and de Sade can be rather dogmatic and sledgehammer like in their writings, but de Sade can actually write. Rand's characters have no sense of humour...

Her characters spoke in platitudes, not realistic, intelligent dialogue. Her novels aren't completely without value, but they're usually overwrought and quite silly.

Some of de Sade's short stories are quite good, and parts of Philosophy in the Bedroom are hilarious.

First of all, yes, her novels are completely without value. They contribute absolutely nothing in any way. Rand is an example of how a brainless wealthy twit imagines her every word to be brilliance. Second of all Gary was a true believer who helped get the project started.

I would recommend the Grove Press edition of Justine, Philosophy in the Bedroom, and other writings. It has some great background on de Sade that dispels some of the myths about the man, and it contains Eugenie de Franval, an excellent short story of his. He was almost a Renaissance man.
He was a poet, diplomat, soldier, brief tyrant of a small island, oracle, wizard, mason, priest-to-be, chemist, runner of a lottery, he contributed to operatic librettos, and more. It's a shame that people think of him only as a horny embodiment of enlightened decadence, because he was the Great Western Writer, recording everything as objectively as possible and in true objectivity making note even of his biases, like a more thorough Thucydides. VS Naipaul says something about how he catches how prostitutes in Paris took their coffee, which is unfortunately stupid in driving it back to the sex again, but there is plenty in there even without the sex to be fascinating, especially inphilosophy and religion and the portrayal of intellectual culture in Enlightenment Europe.

RE: Ayn Rand.
I'll repeat something I posted here a while ago, that convinced me that Rand was shit in a human skin.
WAY BACK WHEN, during a Ford Hall Forum broadcast in Boston, Rand was addressing the faithful and said the folowing:
"If you wish to waste your time and money helping the handicapped, well, we will not stop you."
Thunderous applause and cheering!
The utter contempt and loathing that dripped from every syllable of "handicapped", the disdain for the untermensch, the 'life unworthy of life' she revealed in that one phrase, summed up the whole Objectivist/Libertarian philosophy:
"I got mine. Fuck You!"

When I was a student at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, a group of us took a weekend trip to Paris. We were at a cheap bistro drinking and the table next to us was erupting into song. Now between our members we had folks who spoke French, German, Ghanian, Italian, Czech, Flamand, Dutch, and Spanish and none of us could figure out what language they were singing in. Finally I had enough beers under my belt and I approached them and sure enough, they were singing in Finnish. It has closer ties to Hungarian than any other language from what I remember.

The utter contempt and loathing that dripped from every syllable of "handicapped", the disdain for the untermensch, the 'life unworthy of life' she revealed in that one phrase, summed up the whole Objectivist/Libertarian philosophy:

If you ask my parents what war was like, they'd say, lots of root vegetables, noise, curfews, friends and relatives coming home maimed both physically and mentally, or not at all. They were kids then, and a lot of their lives went on as kids' lives do--they attended school, played, went to the pub with their parents--and most of the fallout was really only visible after the war ended.

The Associated Press count of U.S. military deaths for the month was 81, including a soldier who died from non-combat causes Friday. Figures compiled from officials in the Iraqi ministries of Defense, Health and Interior showed the Iraqi military toll was 44. The Iraqi figures showed that 165 Iraqi police were killed in March. Many of the police serve in paramilitary units.
At least 83 American forces died in January and 80 in February, according to the AP tabulation.

War is like that. The entire country is not necessarily ravaged, but that doesn't mean the war isn't there. Jim Schuto of ABC was reporting from the first days of the occupation of Iraq, and kept saying "shops are open, people are going to school, people are driving". The tone of his voice made it sound like he was surprised, and that everything was just peachy. The whole country is never a warzone, but a lot of it is. Some of it is hidden.
Someone should have told him
"life still goes on during wartime, Jim". But then, he's an MSM reporter, so he doesn't know too much about life...
Janeane The Acerbic Goblin |
04.01.07 - 2:05 am | #
dditionally, the Iraqi ministry figures listed 1,872 Iraqi civilian deaths for the month, about 300 more than the AP tabulation, which is mainly gathered from daily police reports nationwide.
The civilian death toll for the month was down significantly from 2,172 in December, the highest month casualty figure since the AP began keeping records of civilian deaths in April 2005.
However, the number of civilians killed in March was in the same range as for the first two months of this year; 1,604 in January and 1,552 in February, according to the AP count.
jqn |
04.01.07 - 2:07 am | #
Nearly a third of the Iraqi civilian deaths, more than 500 people, where killed in three big bomb attacks in the last week of the month and revenge killings of Sunni men in Tal Afar the night after a Shiite market was bomb in the northwest Iraqi city.

The final title: "Utopian Myopia: American Consumerism, the Cold War, and the Popular Fiction of the Long 1950s." It's a Marxist approach to largely forgotten texts from the postwar era, in which (I contend) the American hegemony was utterly reshaped to convince people for the first time ever that consumption of goods is noble and necessary and patriotic.

Hmmm...
I'll go along with that, but there's something more.
The absolute necessity to keep people on an economic treadmill, when we could have been rid of it forever. Which of course would mean that being wealthy was no longer important.
Which really scares the living shit out of the people at the apex of the pyramid.

the American hegemony was utterly reshaped to convince people for the first time ever that consumption of goods is noble and necessary and patriotic.
God. Remember Bush going live -- less than 36 hours after 9/11 -- and telling people that they needed to keep going about their business, and that they needed to keep spending money?
Watch your back, ror. You're pissing on Fascists. (capital F intentional.)

The absolute necessity to keep people on an economic treadmill, when we could have been rid of it forever. Which of course would mean that being wealthy was no longer important.
Which really scares the living shit out of the people at the apex of the pyramid.

During the 1950s? Very much less of an issue than ever since. Economic disparities charted as very flat... (well, until one took race into account, of course).
It was a very Keynesian, liberal era, during which the economic benefits of WWII victory were spread quite liberally around, via the "GI Bill" among others.
They did miss certain opportunities. As the war ended, a bill was introduced in Congress that would have actually guaranteed a job for anyone who wanted one.
A remarkable bit of legislation, which would've reshaped America, but it failed.

Murmurings amongst the higher-ups at Rorschach's PhD comittee:
"Well, Bush's suggestion that the most important thing for citizens to do after 9/11 was to 'go shopping' would tend to support his thesis."

God. Remember Bush going live -- less than 36 hours after 9/11 -- and telling people that they needed to keep going about their business, and that they needed to keep spending money?
The first paragraph of my diss:
On September 27, 2001, sixteen days after the first coordinated enemy strike on United States soil in memory, President George W. Bush exhorted the American people to display their defiance, telling them to, of all things, “Do your business around the country. Fly and enjoy America's great destination spots. Get down to Disney World in Florida. Take your families and enjoy life, the way we want it to be enjoyed” (“At O’Hare” par. 22). Meanwhile, American officials around the nation were chiming in to declare that the fundamental duty of all citizens in the face of this act of aggression was, in fact, to consume material goods and services. On September 21, Mayor Rudy Giuliani of New York City insisted that the citizens of his city get out and show themselves to be “the best shoppers in the world” as he believed them to be (Zahn par. 6). At the same time, in Florida, the mayor of Miami-Dade County, Alex Penelas, summed up the sentiments being expressed by citing his spouse: “As my wife said, it has never been more patriotic to go shopping” (Vardy and Wattie par. 12). That the intentional killing of thousands of people in the United States would evoke as a first response a concerted effort to incite Americans to go shopping might seem surreal, but the connection between warfare and consumerism in the United States has roots stretching back at least half a century. The years following World War II, especially, cemented the bond between international aggression and consumer capitalism, giving rise to a new sort of militant consumerism as the ultimate expression of utopian vision.

Yeah, the 50's turned into the 60's and then the 70's...
As more and more jobs shifted from actually making things to trying to convince people to buy things.
Now we're at the point where we're flipping the economic basis of consumer society upside down, by making consuming harder and harder to do on a pay as you go basis.
Orwell identified one of the key problems of industrial society: that eventually everyone will be materially equal, and that the distinctions of class become materially meaningless. Which may be good for most of us, but annihilates those at the top, who give up their status.
We can't have that....

My second chapter is about "adman novels," as popular in the 50s as Grisham's novels are today. All about those white-collar workers whose lives are given over to manufacturing desire.
A lot of gender anxieties arise from this new socioeconomic hegemony, let me tell ya.

The vasy majority of self-described "Conservatives" are simply amoral criminals. They want the benefits of liberal government for themselves, but anyone whom they arbitrarily decide doesn't fit into their club, I.E. anyone different, actually liberal, opposed to globalist corporate predation, etc, they'd just love to put in the prison camps they're building for the purpose. The actual agenda of "conservatives" is totalitarian dictatorship.

My general distrust towards the inevitable agendas hidden in virtually all "clubs", "Societys", "Groups" etc has always put me in the Gouchean (and, it must be admitted, sometimes lonely) position of not wanting to join any club which would have me for a member. I've always valued my freedom over my need to belong, however.

I have always been way into mopeds. They are quintessentially independent little vehicles, and sure enough they managed to regulate them to the hilt.

Here's the real deal in America today: if you are willing to live like a peasant in Mao's China, IE live on rice, ride a bicycle, wash your change of clothes in the river, and have a net worth of the bike and the clothes, you can enjoy your freedom. Sadly, this is not hyperbole.

This is the theory, and used to be true, but is less and less so every year. The 50cc thing sounds nice, but in practice they have, are, or will regulate everything. There are all sorts of rules about fucking bicycles in many localities now. The problem is the mostly GOP tightass mentality which must interfere in others lives in order to cover up their own fear of themselves. This is why you find child molestors like Foley "in charge" of programs to "protect the children". They always hide behind the guise of "charity" or "protection" etcetc. What it is is a protection racket. In the US, Democrats do have some disturbing issues relating to control, but generally far less so and far less virulently than Republicans. Generally speaking Democrats tend to be oriented toward a live and let live philosophy, but the realities of our politics make for Democrats who are simply authoritarians, which is why the redo of the Orwellian Nike ad with Hillary in the place of Big Brother resonated in a big way. The real problem is that we long ago moved off of our foundational principles. The Fed corrupted our money, and endless tinkering via laws combined with the growth of beurocracy, and various powers enabled by technology, have all but eliminated the Land of The Free and the Home of The Brave that we were and still are taught we live in. Free to be subservient to tyrrany and brave enough to fight corporate oil wars is about the extent of it. I fully support our troops, which is why I believe they ought not be used as cannonfodder for fatassed gop criminals.
