John Lewis said today that what John McCain and Sarah Palin have been doing (ramping up and encouraging the hate speech) is fostering a climate of hate that could have terrible consequences.
He went on to say that George Wallace never threw a bomb, but the result of his incendiary language was the death of 4 little girls in Alabama in the 60's and that McCain and Palin are playing with fire.

PARKER, Texas (AP) - Larry Hagman was reluctant to be on a new TV show called "Dallas" when he first read the script in the late 1970s, figuring there wouldn't be any money in it.
But his wife persuaded him to give the role of conniving oil baron and cattle rancher J.R. Ewing a shot, saying they could "renegotiate" and that the job might pay off.
It did, eventually earning Hagman a reported $100,000 or more per episode. And now fans from across the world are paying as much as $1,000 apiece to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the debut of what became one of the most popular prime-time soap operas in TV history.

Unhelpful for establishing the tone McCain sought in Davenport was the Rev. Arnold Conrad, past pastor of the Grace Evangelical Free Church. His prayer before McCain arrived at the convention center blocks from the Mississippi River appeared to dismiss faiths other than Christianity and cast the election as a referendum on God himself.
"I would also pray, Lord, that your reputation is involved in all that happens between now and November, because there are millions of people around this world praying to their god — whether it's Hindu, Buddha, Allah — that his opponent wins, for a variety of reasons," Conrad said.
"And Lord, I pray that you would guard your own reputation, because they're going to think that their god is bigger than you, if that happens. So I pray that you will step forward and honor your own name with all that happens between now and Election Day," he said.

Hi Folks. Last night I was researching Michael Nesmith from the Monkees. it turns out his mom invented liquid paper in the 50's when she was a working single mother and secretary. The product didn't become profitable until the late 60's and it wasn't until 1979 when she sold the rights with royalties to a company for 50 million dollars. The next year she died and Nesmith inherited 25 million dollars. Before that time, the 10 years following the Monkees, he was essentially poor. This is really an all american story.

Going all psycho-wingnut all the time ain't going to help McCain's election chances.
Someone posted the theory yesterday that McCain has simply thrown in the towel, and is doing the Nuremburg/KKK rallies just for fund raising purposes, to make sure his election war chest ends up in positive territory instead of in debt.
I kind of wonder if there's something to that idea. Of course, they also want the psycho base to show up to vote for their wingnut congress critters.

The lower prices reflect lower demand, prompted partly by high prices in the summer, partly by the recession which we aren't yet officially in.
Some of the drop may also be due to the speculators getting out due to tighter credit.

Oil is down to $83 bbl. That's a world price, not a domestic one.
The lower prices reflect lower demand, prompted partly by high prices in the summer, partly by the recession which we aren't yet officially in.
The lower prices also reflect the fact that the people speculating in that market are also caught up in the credit crisis. Troubled investment banks like Morgan Stanley are heavily involved in commodities, as are hedge funds, who are now experiencing massive withdraws.
Oil futures contracts are rapidly being sold to pay off those debts.

In 2001 Alan Greenspan had mounted the extraordinary argument that budget surpluses were too big and that the US foreign debt would be paid off too quickly.
Under vigorous and often aggressive questioning by Hillary Clinton in 2005, Dr Greenspan, looking decidedly uncomfortable, said that, with the benefit of hindsight, he had been mistaken in his view about budget surpluses.
"We were confronted at the time with an almost universal expectation amongst experts that we were dealing with a very large surplus for which there seemed to be no end," he said. "I look back and I would say to you, if confronted with the same evidence we had back then, I would recommend exactly what I recommended then. Turns out we were all wrong".
"Not all of us," snapped Senator Clinton.

Oh my, something is up. Obama has now admitted on his website on a Kenyan citizenship. He is now in damage control. See below:
“When Barack Obama Jr. was born on Aug. 4,1961, in Honolulu, Kenya was a British colony, still part of the United Kingdom’s dwindling empire. As a Kenyan native, Barack Obama Sr. was a British subject whose citizenship status was governed by The British Nationality Act of 1948. That same act governed the status of Obama Sr.‘s children.
Since Sen. Obama has neither renounced his U.S. citizenship nor sworn an oath of allegiance to Kenya, his Kenyan citizenship automatically expired on Aug. 4,1982.”

Oil futures contracts are rapidly being sold to pay off those debts.

And the credit crisis is also strengthening the dollar. It was suggested at the height of the oil "crisis" that the actual price of oil - without the speculation and the lowering of the dollar - should be about 70-80 dollars a bbl. Looks like that is where we are heading. But with current economic conditions, it will probably trend lower. People without money will not be pushing the envelope higher.

The thing is, whether or not Kenya issued a birth certificat for Barack Obama due to his father's status as a Kenyan is utterly irrelevant to his status as a US citizen born on US soil.
Kenya's desire to grant him citizenship due to his heritage isn't much different than someone born in the US but having a parent of Swedish or Thai or Peruvian citizenship graning that child citizenship because their parents were nationals of that country.
Heck, Americans can be born that way. Congress addressed this in 1790. John McCain is a US citizen despite the fact he was not born on US soil because his parents were American citizens.
This is just stupid and desperate and easily refuted. It speaks to the total intellectual bankruptcy of so many Obama haters.

They say that buyers on contract can't get credit to pay at their locked in (higher) prices..
What's happening is that a lot of these speculators bought futures contracts on margin and now they are experiencing margin calls with every price drop.
You can buy a $1000 contract with $125 down.
Apparently, a fairly significant portion of the sell off in the stock market is these speculators dumping stocks in order to get the money to pay off their futures contract margin calls.

"This issue has been raised before in the presidential campaigns of Barry Goldwater, born in Arizona territory not the United States, and George Romney, born in Mexico. But it was never resolved.
"In 1964, the Supreme Court seemed to say, without deciding, that "natural born" meant born inside the United States. In an opinion on an unrelated issue, the court observed, "The rights of citizenship of the native born and of the naturalized person are of the same dignity and are coextensive. The only difference drawn by the Constitution is that only the 'natural born' citizen is eligible to be President." But that language is not legally binding, and the Supreme Court has never ruled on what "natural born" means."
No one will raise it as an issue because Democrats are wimps but you can be damn sure if the situations were reversed and Obama was born in Panama instead of McCain, there would be legal briefs flying all around the place.

Folks, I don’t think you understand how we truly feel about you. We mock you and tease you, I know, and you hate us for it. But we don’t hate you back. Really, we don’t. We’re secular pluralists, after all, and we know we have to find ways of sharing this planet with people who can’t stand secular pluralists. We really just want you to leave us alone. Still, we have our limits. The way you’ve behaved over the past decade or two leads us to believe that you’ll do whatever it takes to make the next decade or two a living hell for everyone who’s sincerely trying to clean up all the messes you’ve made. And we just can’t be bothered with that nonsense right now. This is too important.
Understand, I don’t want to deprive you of your pastimes and your livelihoods. On the contrary: I want you to enjoy them to the fullest extent imaginable—but in a way that doesn’t interfere with sane people. So I have a proposal.
We will spend $500 trillion and create 150 million new, high-paying jobs creating an alternate reality for you. In a state of your choosing—but preferably Utah, Oklahoma, or Alaska—we will construct a massive VR installation complete with all your favorite obsessions and catering to your every resentment. In this separate, self-enclosed universe, President Palin and Vice-President Tancredo will run things just like you think they oughta be; crescents and croissants will be banned; An American Carol will sweep the Oscars; television will consist of two channels, Fox and Fox Sports; and the ten commandments will be proudly displayed in every classroom and courtroom, together with a Very Angry Eagle if you like. There won’t be any elite universities or sneering college professors, of course, but there will be Mexicans, so that you can call for their deportation and then hire them to mow your lawn and work in your pork-processing plants; there will be gay people, so that your sense of sexual identity can be properly threatened at all times; and there will be a black person, played by Gloria Foster, so that you can prevent her from voting.
It’s totally a win-win. You’ll love it, and you’ll be out of our hair. And all you have to do is lie down in this comfy little pod of pink goo.

"Um, children of US citizens are considered "natural born citizens" no matter what country's soil they're born on.
You could look it up."
V for Virginia, easily amused
Not so sure about that, but I'll follow up. But the bigger point here, which youd have to acknowledge, is, right or worng, the media has been absolutely quiet about this issue. Why? Well, because it would hurt Obama.
I hope others are sending this story to the mainstream media.

Richard, gas prices in Europe per liter
Your site shows $3.78 a gallon in the UK.
It was about $8 back in the summer when oil was $147 a barrel.
Like I said, worldwide price drop.

What's happening is that a lot of these speculators bought futures contracts on margin and now they are experiencing margin calls with every price drop.
Right. And fuck 'em too. Futures contract can be used for good - but naked specualtion is gambling.

No one will raise it as an issue because Democrats are wimps but you can be damn sure if the situations were reversed and Obama was born in Panama instead of McCain, there would be legal briefs flying all around the place.

I read they were going to vote on a nonbinding resolution. Don't know if they did but ... nonbinding resolutions are, well, non-binding.

There's a huge difference between "naturalized" and "natural born".
The Gropinator for example can't run for President. He was born in Austria, an Austrian citizen. He later went through the naturalization process to become a US citizen.
Same for Henry Kissinger, who was excluded from the line of succession when he was Secretary of State.
SoBe is correct that this issue has never been definitively resolved, because a situation hasn't come up where it's in question. McCain may have been born in the Canal Zone, but that didn't stop him from attending Annapolis, where I'm pretty sure citizenship is a requirement.
I'm pretty sure the 1790 law would be cited in any arguments, because it directly addressed the issue of children born of US citizens overseas.

Here's another site with euro gas prices, you've got to scroll down:
It seems like demand for gasoline (or petrol, as they say in the UK) isn't quite as inelastic as the pessimists feared. One liter of gasoline costs about 117p in the UK, which is about $8.62 per US gallon if you convert it. That's over twice as much as in the US, and at that level, the International Energy Agency (IEA) reports that demand for gasoline in Britain is down about 20% over the past 12 months.

Beautiful fall day here in Minnesota, but starting to cloud up this afternoon. I'm still feelin' sunny, tho, knowing that John McCain is wasting another day campaigning in the upper midwest. He's booked into small venues that he can fill without Sarahbot as an opening act, in areas where Republicans are largely moderates, so he doesn't need to dish red meat. On the other hand, he's getting booed, there are empty seats in the house and he's continuing to putz around in states--MN, WI, IA--where he has almost no chance of winning. I'm guessing he's being scheduled so as to feel better about himself after a week of ticking off every sentient person in the media and in mainstream politics.

The Troopergate report was just released yesterday.
Based on the finding that Gov. Sarah Palin had violated Alaska's Ethics Act by letting her husband, Todd Palin, use her office to launch a personal, family-feud vendetta against her sister's ex-husband, is anyone ready for Todd Palin (if his wife is elected vice-president) to be a heartbeat away from the presidency?
This is my take on what a McCain/Palin presidency would mean.
That Todd Palin, who has numerous connections to far, right-wing militia groups, would have a very high platform from which to push the interests of all these groups (Timothy McVeigh would be soooo evnious) if his wife ends up being vice-president (a heartbeat away from the presidency)...just as Sarah Palin herself would have a very high platform, too, from which to push her hardcore, anti-U.S. Constitution religious bigotries and biases, with her witch doctor pastor friend no doubt being called upon by her to exorcise all the "witches" from our nation and drive out the "liberal devil"...which would be the death-knell for our freedom-loving, liberal democracy.
