Two final points about minorities and mortgages: Government studies and independent analyses have shown that a shockingly high number of prime-qualified minority borrowers are steered toward higher-cost loans. That's racism, folks. Take two equally qualified potential borrowers -- one white, one black -- and the black person is more likely to end up with the more costly loan.
And as for undocumented immigrant mortgage holders, studies tracking their loan payment histories show that they have some of the lowest default rates, lower than U.S. citizens, in fact.
In other words, be careful where you point that finger.

A spectacular day here in Chi, too. I slept late, amused the cats, and wrote a letter to the Tribune excoriating them for their new design, which sacrificed news & analysis to a snappy design. Idiots. They ran one paragraph about McCain trying to calm his rabid followers, when the wire story they clipped that from went to 21 grafs. That is freekin' important news -- but the design didn't have room for it. Jesus. They should be ashamed of themselves.

I'm just expressing my opinion. And I'm sure she doesn't want advice from me because she comes off like she doesn't want advice from anyone. I don't like that attitude in journalists. I think that attitude was the invention of right-wing shit-flingers like O'Lielly, and it doesn't need to be emulated on the left. I guess I'm just old school. Rachel could obviously play it any way she wants and be successful, but she won't have me in her regular audience if she plays it the way she does now. But Mr. McCain’s detractors see his contradictory proposals as a cynical effort to be all things to all people, and as evidence that policy proposals often seem to take a back seat in his campaign to less tangible things like biography and character.
“He has the same set of must-solve-problem approaches to policy and politics as newspaper editorial boards tend to — he kind of careens from crisis to crisis saying ‘we’ve got to Do Something,’ with a capital D and a capital S,” said Matt Welch, the editor in chief of Reason magazine, who traced Mr. McCain’s evolving ideology in his book “McCain: The Myth of a Maverick” (Palgrave Macmillan, 2007).
The ads are starting to look real cheap and cheesy.

Here's my favorite recent press release from ACORN:
...It was surprising that law enforcement officials appeared suddenly at our Las Vegas offices Tuesday, because ACORN and its attorneys have already been proactive in providing information about problematic cards and any employee suspected of misconduct. In July, ACORN staff and our attorney set up a meeting with Clark County elections officials and a representative of the Secretary of State’s office to urge them to take action on information ACORN had provided. Since then, and as recently as September 29th , ACORN has provided officials with copies and—in some cases—second copies of many of the personnel records and the "problem card packages" and cover sheets with which we originally identified the problem cards.

'Some readers trying to find the article online may have been surprised by the political coverage there. The magazine does not own the domain name USWeekly.com which is a vehement anti-Obama site, featuring articles like “We’re Not Fooled Barack — Nor Will We Be.” A representative from Us Weekly said that Wenner Media, which owns Us Weekly, had approached USWeekly.com when the magazine went weekly in 2000. Wenner did not succeed at buying the site then. The magazine has “no real recourse” since the USWeekly.com site seems to have been established before Us magazine changed its name to Us Weekly, said Mark G. McCreary, a partner at the law firm Fox Rothschild. It is unclear who owns USWeekly.com, but at least one person affiliated with the site had his own opinion on media coverage of the campaigns. In response to an e-mail inquiry, a response from someone using the name Richard Carroll — who is listed as an author on the site — said he did not own it. “We have nothing to discuss,” he wrote, “other than for me to point out to you as I have other reporters who have written: Why the media blackout surrounding Barack Hussein Obama?”' [NYT]

BREAKING: GOD REMOVES AUSTRIAN RIGHT WING LEADER JOERG HAIDER FROM PLANET.
Haider was driving alone in his official state car on the road out of Klagenfurt, in southern Austria, when the car went off the road early Saturday. Police said Haider had just passed another car when he veered off the road, hit a concrete post, and rolled over several times before coming to a stop in the middle of the road.
The woman driving the car that Haider passed called for help and rescue teams were on the scene immediately, said Johann Melischneg of the Carinthia state police.
Haider suffered head and chest injuries, police said. He was taken to the hospital but was dead on arrival, Melischneg said.
Police said it is too early to say what caused the accident, but that Haider appeared to have been traveling at a high rate of speed.
"For us it's like the end of the world," Haider spokesman Stefan Petzner told the Austria Press Agency.

Another good one from ACORN:
In his newest ad, John McCain's campaign bizarrely claims, 'ACORN forced banks to issue risky home loans, the same types of loans that caused the financial crisis we're in today.' Nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, ACORN has worked successfully to help working class families get good home loans on fair terms from legitimate banks and has fought vigorously against predatory lenders who have ripped off families in our communities. These predatory loans caused the crisis.
For more than a decade, ACORN members have held protests, released reports, and advocated for regulations to protect homeowners from predatory lenders. ACORN organizers and volunteers have been working day and night to help victims of the GOP economic meltdown to save their homes from foreclosure. In fact, ACORN has brought class action lawsuits against several predatory lenders, and has lobbied the Federal Reserve and Congress in support of regulations against predatory lending. ACORN has even been successful in convincing many lenders to treat homeowners more fairly and help families be able to make their mortgage payments and save their homes.
Actually, you're not - whether you are aware of it or not the tone you're using is not one of simple statement. Especially in this sort of forum people react not only to what you say but how you say it.

McCain senior adviser Nicolle Wallace released this statement, NBC's Kelly O'Donnell reports. "Barack Obama's assault on our supporters is insulting and unsurprising. These are the same people obama called 'bitter' and attacked for 'clinging to guns' and faith. He fails to understand that people are angry at corrupt practices in Washington and Wall Street and he fails to understand that America's working families are not 'clinging' to anything other than the sincere hope that Washington will be reformed from top to bottom."

I am focused on the election and getting through that. It isn't that this other stuff isn't important, supremely so in many cases, it's just too much for an old man right now.
Listening to the flailing movement conservatives blame feckless Democrats for the spectacular failure of Reaganomics is like listening to the Nazis blame the Jews for the collapse of the Russian Front and the inglorious debacle that was Stalingrad. If John McCain thinks that community organizers caused the foreclosure crisis, he knows even less about the economy than previously thought.
Two different rightwing coworkers, while espousing anger and calling for punishment of executives over the financial meltdown, both went on to attribute the problem entirely to those goddam poor people not paying back their mortgages. Also, Clinton is the one who insisted that all those minorities and po' folk should have houses, so it's his fault.
These are not stupid people - uninformed and ignorant and confused, yes, but not unintelligent otherwise, yet when I suggested that perhaps there might be a bit more to the problem, and that it's sort of an odd idea to think that poor people's mortgages could cause the entire global credit system to collapse, they looked at me with great puzzlement. They had heard zero that there might be some other reason for the problem.

That it's actually a very closed group quite resistant to ideas that don't model the accepted identity norm.

It doesn't surprise me at all. It just shows me that there are some liberals -- thankfully not nearly nearly as many as there are conservatives -- who cannot escape from the mental trap of identity politics and will always view disagreement as disloyalty.
I mean, what liberal principle is threatened by my saying that Rachel Maddow annoys me with her sneering delivery? It is a perfectly honest opinion from somebody who could not be more of a classical liberal. Wallace was never the racist he portrayed in 1962-1980. That was a cynical act (put on, play acting) to leverage hate into power. It was a quick sell to the power base in alabama then in working class areas of other states.
But he unleashed a dragon over which he had on power and over which he took no responsibility.
Caribou Barbie plays the same game, but as you point out, she'll never see the error of ANY of her ways.

Did it ever occur to you that what engendered the objection was what you said and not that you said it? You disagree with something and say so -- and you find that you get very unhappy responses, Did it ever occur to you that there was something in what you said that caused the type of responses you get? Because to assume that there can be nothing in your statements to which others may rightly take offense and that their rejection of your statement is based on some kind of character flaw is just going to engender more rejection.
What you said bothered and upset people, and you have taken insufficient measures to account for your culpability in that. People feel the way they feel about things and since you are commenting on matters of taste and not fact then there IS no "right" answer.
I always try to remind myself to say "I don't like country music." NOT "Country music sucks!" When you are going to express a contrary opinion in matters of taste it is very important to emphasize the personal carve out that is being represented or to generalize in such a way as to get everyone to step back and approach the subject from a neutral position first. Not always going to get agreement that way either but much less likely to engender backlash. Remember your audience. Remember that being in the minority in matters of taste is not going to get you any special kid gloves handling.
I speak from hard experience having been a socially clueless young man who had to have some things pounded into him at the cost of friendships, jobs, and a spouse or two. Pissing people off and demanding that they take it doesn't work. Even if you're right, it matters what you say, and how you say it.

Um, no.
We want to keep out noses out of the business of women, their doctors, and their families on such matters. Let them make their own choices. The fact of the matter is, "imperfect babies" can be economic burdens that destroy the lives of their siblings. As hard as that is, it's a fact.
However, if you, Sarah Palin, and your ilk, are willing to assume those economic burdens yourselves, for everyone else, then by all means.

Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin is attacking Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama's position on abortion.
Palin says a vote for Obama is, in her words, "a vote for activist courts that will continue to smother the open and democratic debate that we deserve and that we need on this issue of life."
Palin made her remarks Saturday during a rally before about 5,000 people in Johnstown, about 60 miles east of Pittsburgh.

Let's review how this works.
The main media outlets ignore all week the extreme anger expressed at McCain rallies. Many people actually had not heard that people at McCain rallies were screaming' kill him' about Obama.
Now yesterday, we have McCain 'do the right thing' and tamp down the anger. This is where the mainstream media does there first report, making McCain look good.
And today, the 'false equivalence, balance' gambit trying to make it seem like their is just as much anger from Obama supporters.

The most revealing comment she has made was this in her post about the last debate...
My only hope is that our generation’s FDR, Hillary Clinton, will have some input into the direction our country takes. And the only way I can see that occurring is if Obama is defeated, since he and his enablers in the Party have made their disdain of all things Clinton abundantly clear. If they succeed in their coup, Hillary Clinton’s career will never advance beyond the Senate, and her voice will continue to be silenced by Obama for America, just as it was in the primaries.
To that end, let’s all of us PUMAs make sure that Obama never sees the inside of the Oval Office. PUMA POWER!!!
The only thing that matters if making sure Clinton eventually becomes president.

Now Take Five was some mellow stuff. And I'll drink more than I should at a good Blues bar. The right build in a set will make me rock out with the rest of the tribe sure enough. But the structure of Country just does nothing for me. I don't listen to (or can't hear clearly) a lot of rock lyrics, but country just tends to have a world view that, especially lately, just makes me cringe.
And yet, I'll laugh and sing along with "Goodbye Earl". I contradict myself? Very well then, I contradict myself. I am large, I contain multitudes. A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds.

Absolutely. Batshit. Insane.
But I found her most recent to be incredibly ludicrous:
Bravo, Connecticut Supreme Court, bravo! Thank you for recognizing the rights of our GLBT friends and family to love and marry whomever they choose.
May more states lead the way on this important issue, and may the federal government soon realize that preventing loving couples from marrying is barbaric and cruel, and unworthy of the country we aspire to be.
Because, you know, Day One of a McCain/Palin administration is going to devoted to a celebration of gay rights.
Even assuming you think a McCain administration is just a holding action until The Goddess waltzes in in 2012, what in holy fucking hell does she think is going to happen with the Supreme Court? That McCain is going to consult with Hillary before he appoints anyone and get her OK?

The feminist movement of the twentieth century has assaulted traditional Christian values for women, and the result has been a revolution in our country. Whereas women traditionally fulfilled support roles and gained their greatest joy and sense of accomplishment from being wives and mothers, today many have abandoned their homes for the higher-paying and supposedly more prestigious jobs of the work force outside the home. Traditional sexual morality has given way to promiscuity with women often in the role of aggressor. Gentle, quiet women have become self-assertive and hostile, boldly demanding their "rights." Divorce is rampant, with women frequently initiating separation and divorces.

The New Zoo Review - Doug always gave me the creeps!
mccain lying again. cnn shows it again without comment, even though their own website debunks the lie.
repeating this one:
The Statement: At a presidential debate Tuesday, October 7 in Nashville, Tennessee, Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain said Democratic opponent Sen. Barack Obama and other Democrats resisted regulating mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, which ultimately collapsed and had to be taken over by the government. "Meanwhile, they were getting all kinds of money in campaign contributions. Sen. Obama was the second-highest recipient of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac money in history — in history," he said.
VERDICT: Misleading. No donations actually came from the companies. One method of measuring employee contributions does put Obama second overall, but another, for the current election cycle, shows McCain receiving significantly more.

another mccain lie rebroadcast w/o comment on the toilet bowl, debunked on cnn's own fact check page:
n. John McCain questioned Democratic opponent Sen. Barack Obama's foresight on the role of the troubled subprime lending sector in the recent financial crisis. "As recently as September of last year, he said that subprime loans had been — quote — 'a good idea,' " McCain said.
Get the facts!
The Facts
McCain is citing a statement Obama made during a September 17, 2007, speech in New York. While the words he quotes are technically accurate, McCain is taking them out of context from a statement that actually was criticizing abuses in the subprime sector.
"Subprime lending started off as a good idea — helping Americans buy homes who couldn't previously afford them … ," Obama said. "But as certain lenders and brokers began to see how much money could be made, they began to lower their standards. Some appraisers began inflating their estimates to get the deals done. Some borrowers started claiming income they didn't have just to qualify for the loans and some were engaging in irresponsible speculation. But many borrowers were tricked into glossing over the fine print."
Not soon enough.

The first time I can recall a major explosion of namestealing here was in late 2005- early 2006, when the troll that never leaves, Allen Butler, was spending most of his time posting as annieangel and Shoelimpy. During that period, Butler was doing it mainly to attack the female posters here, Vicki and Terri in particular.
Obviously, there's little question as to who the perp is this time around.

Hold your horses Terry. That's exactly what happened. No one has said otherwise. Even Vicki wasn't saying otherwise. She was saying she saw a McCain rally, which is what it was. That's the point, a heckler at a McCain rally, probably a Republican plant, can hardly be the equivalent of all the anger we've seen at McCain rallies.
Learn to think for yourself, Terry. If you didn't see what happened you need to shut up, and quit misreading Vicki and I.

How much to want to wager Terry? You're an odd one Terry. It seems to me very few would doubt that's precisely the kind of thing you would expect from Cnn. Even odder, is why would a 'troll' come in here and make Cnn look conservatively biased. God are you kneejerk stupid.

Cnn is now reporting on rage from Obama supporters.
It's obvious that CNN has made a conscious decision to become the John McCain Network during this presidential campaign.
Vanderbilt Cooper and the "reporters" and pundits on CNN are functioning as the PR wing of the McCain campaign -- and Dana Bash has become McCain's principal spokesmodel for the network.
Paul Begala is the only serious voice of reason and opposition in a sea of GOPer tools on CNN, but it's not enough to counter the steady stream of McCain cheerleaders.
Bravo to the media gods for Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow!
