Atrios, I wrote about this back in January, when I drove some senior citizens to the polls for early voting. These voters were all ardent Democrats, but one lady told me she was scared of "that Muslim, that Obama," and argued with me when I told her he was NOT a muslim.
I told her it's a right-wing lie, just like they lied about John Kerry with the Swift Boat Veterans. I'm not sure she believed me, but I could tell that got her thinking.
I just don't get how this lie has become so prevalent in the minds of your average American voters, except to say that repetition tends to make people think things are true. Before you know it, it's "common knowledge." And we've had community newspapers in the heartland repeating the lies in that e-mail, too.

One of my fellow grads is in charge of our high school graduating class's internet site and forwards emails out to us which he's received from fellow grads. Some pictures, some humour, some nostalgia. Often I get emails condemning Barak for being and anti Israel Muslim. Often I receive emails in praise of Israel's and the U.S.'s "fight against Islamic terrorism." The hate for Islam, the fear and loathing of Obama, are quite prevalent in the American Jewish community. How prevalent, I don't know as I live in Western Canada. But there's alot of them out there.

Let's take these one at a time. Obama did not attend a madrassa. He lived with his mother and his stepfather in Indonesia for a few years. It is true that Indonesia is largely Muslim, as I believe his father's family was. His mother was (and is) Christian, and he himself with his wife and two daughters belong to a well known (and very large) African American Christian church here in Chicago.
Most liberals I know have no problem with a candidate's religion, though they may have some problems with the political positions of some candidate's religion. For example, some Catholic candidates are vehemently anti-abortion. It's not the Catholicism that is an issue, it's the strong anti-choice politics. (And of course there are many Catholics, politicians and otherwise, who are pro-choice.) Most of my friends, not all liberals, were turned off by Romney not because he is a Mormon, but because he was perceived to be a phoney.
You may recall, pud, that it was us nasty bigoted liberals who had a Jew on the presidential ticket in Joe Lieberman. Again, Lieberman's current unpopularity is not due to his faith, but his politics. If it were true that Obama were a Muslim--and I assure you that he is not--I do not think it would bother the people I know.
This may not be fair, but if either side has a problem with religious or other differences, it would seem to be the Right, not so much the Left, though God knows there are bigots to be found of all political stripes.

I agree with you. I think it's ultimately a losing battle for liberals to try to work with the right, at least this right, which views bipartisanship as date rape. See, e.g., Pelosi's surprise that the Republicans didn't even want to work with her to get things done. A few weeks ago when I informed TPM readers about the hate campaign against Obama withing the Jewish community, I did not believe that it would succeed.
Jews are too smart to fall for such obvious lies. Or so I thought.
Now I read in the New York Jewish Week, the largest Jewish newspaper in the country, that the campaign is working, as intended. Jewish voters actually are buying into the "Obama is a secret Muslim" lie. It also appears that some Jewish organizations are involved in disseminating the smears. Incredibly, the recently retired Israeli ambassador to the United States has also jumped into the act with a column saying Obama should not be President. That is almost unprecedented.

Second, you are provably wrong. There is no race to the bottom in environmental standards in Europe and the United States. Environmental standards are improving in more places than they are declining.

Hillary said what lots of us have been saying about some of Obama's tactics--they are Rovian, they are ReThug talking points, and they are beneath what someone who wishes to be the standard bearer of the Democratic Party should be doing. As I mentioned earlier, Hillary's always had a problem with her delivery that dates back to Bill's early gubernatorial campaigns.

I don't think, I know. I have never watched much TV. But at the time, Doonesbury depicted Reagan as Max Headroom, the computer-generated talking head that had a vocal quirks like repeating words for no apparent reason.
One time I happened to see Reagan on TV, and he did exactly that. He couldn't speak a coherent sentence. And nobody was talking about it, except a cartoonist.

I'm real late to this thread but I'm glad that the A-man has recognized what I've known for years--that he does not, contrary to his frequent assertions, get the "stupidest trolls on the Internets." That honor belongs to the comments threads at various newspaper sites.
Of course, hardly anyone actually reads those stupid things, and based on what I've seen over at the AJC, when I compare the number of people who vote on the online Luckovich cartoon polls vs. the number of posters in the comments section, I think that most of the people reading are a) left-leaning and b) laughing at the right-wing freaks.
But I'm often wrong.

i dont remember a time when reagan was really sharp. the first time i saw him was on death valley days; when he became governor of california it really surprised a lot of people because of all the stupid things he said. maybe he was sharp when he was president of SAG (i think) and snitching for the fbi.

And that is one of the biggest problems with politics. This has nothing to do with policy, or ideas, or points of view. Everything seems to boil down to what someone thinks she "meant" by a particular statement.

I do not doubt that HRC was much less enamored with NAFTA than Bill and is more liberal than him on domestic issues in general.
