GravatarI'll take the train when it gets here in 2010.

GravatarAnd now I'll call sheets.

GravatarNuns have nice habits

GravatarGas $2.49 here.

GravatarNo jobs.

GravatarI agree that mass transit is now seen as "more cool." Will be interesting to see if winter changes this. We COULD have bus kiosks that are heated Starbucks stations. Or, they can continue to be poorly-lit places that women fear before sunrise and after sunset where poor people huddle in the cold.

GravatarWeird, I just got DT'd on this:

Um, Weeee??!! From CR:

The depth of the recession was revealed today as truckmaker Volvo admitted demand across the Continent has crashed by 99.7% as it took orders for just 115 new lorries in the last three months.

That compares to orders totalling 41,970 in the third quarter of 2007.

Gravatarto be honest, I haven't changed my habits, but then I don't drive a lot...maybe 100 miles a week.

GravatarI think atrios could invent a little button or icon or something that would show up in a thread when he puts up a new post.

Haloscan would probably screw it up though.

Gravatarit'd be very cool i could catch the bus to work.

sadly, it would add a half hour to my already 1 and half hour drive. even more sadly it could be done easily in half an hour, maybe less.

GravatarI buy a tank of gas for my 95 sentra about once every two months. I walk to work, and avoid going down to the local "posh" malls to buy shit I do not need.

GravatarI assume you would be in favor of a commuter train across PA. You know, those highways are expensive.

GravatarI walk to and from work.

Nyah nyaaah, you OPEC creeps.

GravatarPeople are feeling an anti-wealth effect that wasn't there, or wasn't as strong, when gas was at this price on teh way up.

Gravatarmaybe 100 miles a week.

Sheesh.

I will say that MSFT does have a very cool private bus service for its full-timers. If I ever get my blue badge, i'll do that.

I like you.

GravatarThe major obstacles for mass transit have less to do with "coolness" than with ease of satellite services at the destination, and systemic consistency, so that it's not just "cool" to use mass transit, it's cheaper, it's convenient, riders have retail and service options available to them while they are without their autos, and it's reliable.

In places where mass transit has not yet caught on, those are the bigger problems.

GravatarThe depth of the recession was revealed today as truckmaker Volvo admitted demand across the Continent has crashed by 99.7% as it took orders for just 115 new lorries in the last three months.

Ho-lee crap.

Yeah, I'm not sure what's going on. More people in large cars are driving faster in Houston, I know that.

Only gas prices affect these people, and sometimes not even that. So I'm still wondering if Hummer is dead, or if it will make a comeback.

GravatarSheesh.

I cannot wait to move to a city. Philly isn't my pick, though.

GravatarUnemployment probably has something to do with continuing lower usage. First-time claims have been fairly high over the last couple of months, and job losses are higher than normal.

So on target it needed to be seen again.

Here's the problem, or, rather here are the problems.

Most big city public transportation systems weren't prepared for the summer crush of new customers and the experience for those new customers wasn't the best.

Now, because of the failing economy and some injudicious "investments", some transportation systems (i.e., LA's Metro) are in serious financial trouble. Some are actually talking about service cuts as well as fare hikes (the latter is ludicrous...passenger fares make up a small fraction of the financing of public transportation).

Unless the feds and the states are willing to commit to public transportation as a necessary first step in energy independence, people will go back to their cars once gas hits $2.15 a gallon.

GravatarIf anyone wants to rent a most entertaining series, may I suggest the HBO production of "Rome". Every episode is terrific.

i watched it in first run, and rented the DVDs just a few weeks ago and watched in back-to-back. I loved it. Makes the Sopranos look like PG-13 in terms of sex and, even moreso, violence.

GravatarObviously, as a DFH, if there was something I could do, I would.

GravatarI saw a gas stop that had gas at 2.29 per gallon. Almost at a level I can accept. Maybe another 50 cents.

GravatarSeated chair massage stations at bus stops. Wine tasting parties at bus stops. Yoga lessons at bus stops. Networking sessions w wifi at bus stops. Speed dating parties at bus stops. GravatarDexter was extremely good for a long time but it totally sucks now. In fact one of the strangest reasons it sucks is because of the old-fashioned anti-East Asian racism. They have Japanese characters that are stupid (in ways that actual Japanese are not) for no particularly good reason. No logic, no depth of character, just "Japanese people are irritating." Also the same writer doesn't seem to know anything about Japan: they talk about Shitno and Buddhism being some sort of opposites. Fucking imbiciles.

GravatarPeople got kinda whipsawed by the speed of the price increases, I'd think. Wouldn't necessarily ratchet right back up.

Also, I hear retail is absolutely cratering. That alone means less driving.

If secret-keeping is a sign of success, the Obama campaign is well on its way to a solid presidential transition. Only a few details about Obama's extensive transition planning have leaked out, and even the more talkative Obama aides and advisers are keeping mum. They have an election to win.

http:// marcambinder.theatlantic....rderly_quie.php

GravatarLarge employers could get on board as well.

Several in the LA area (a couple of large law firms and USC, e.g.) provide free shuttle service from Union Station, which is the hub for the light rail and MetroRail system.

Gravatarone you start it, the conservation habit is less of a big inconvenience than you thought it was going to be.

I used mass transit up east for a decade. it was wonderful, it was easier and cheaper than driving.

I'm not talking about the actual transit, I'm talking about the sytem. During my earlier experiences, the system was dependable, you could plan around it. It didn't cost an arm and leg to get to the airport, for example. There were on ground services built around rountes- drug stores, video rentals, restaurants, dry cleaners. Things ran on time.

The same is not true of cities without a mass transit culture and without adequate planning around the routes, on ground services, fares and schedules. In Dallas for example, I have friends that pretty much have to go out of their way to use mass transit and also end up driving as much or more when they get home in the evenings to run all the errands they couldn't run on foot.

Systems have to mature.

GravatarMichael Froman, a Harvard Law classmate of Obama's who served in the Treasury Dept. as Robert Rubin's chief of staff, is a key member of the team, as is Chris Lu, who most recently served as Obama's legislative director in the Senate.

The identity of his nominee for Secretary of the Treasury will be disclosed in short order. Former Harvard President Larry Summers and New York Federal Reserve Board president Timothy F. Geithner are possibilities.

The foreign policy establishment expects Obama to announce that Defense Secretary Robert Gates will stay at his post for an extended but definite period of time to manage the transition into Afghanistan and out of Iraq, but it's not clear whether Obama has accepted this collective recommendation.

Obama will also name his national security adviser; the identity of this person is not known, although Washington national security hands believe that Gregory Craig, a former senior national security lawyer in the Clinton administration is the frontrunner, although others point to Susan Rice, a former Clinton NSC staffer, as a possibility.

It's not just the cost of gas, but the cost of operating a vehicle in total.

GravatarFrom the story...

In fact, Americans drove 15 billion fewer miles in August than they did in the same month a year ago, according to federal data, which puts the streak of declining driving habits at 10 months.

That represents a 5.6% decline from August 2007, marking the biggest year-over-year drop ever recorded, U.S. Secretary of Transportation Mary Peters said in a statement.

Gas began its swift descent from record highs in mid-July and currently costs a national average $2.78 for a gallon of regular unleaded, according to recent numbers from AAA. That's down almost a dollar from a month ago and is more or less the same as it cost in October 2007.

Of course, in August, gas prices were still near their peak.

Even $2.78 is still pretty high in historical terms.

It will be interesting what the trend will be in a few months, when gas hits $2.00 or less.

Currently, the Nymex RBOB Gasoline Future (basically a measure of the wholesale gasoline price), sits at $1.47 per gallon which is less than half what it was back in July, went it was over $3.00 and prices at the pump were over $4.00.

Oil is at $64 a barrel and dropping. $50 a barrel seems likely.

Oct. 24 (Bloomberg) -- Oil options contracts to sell crude at $50 by December almost tripled today after an OPEC decision to slash production failed to allay concerns that the global economic slump is hurting demand.

The cost of the $50 December 2008 put option, which gives the holder the right to sell oil futures at $50 a barrel, rose as much as 142 percent to $1.50 on the New York Mercantile Exchange, compared with 62 cents yesterday, according to exchange data.

``It certainly seems to me that we could get down to $50 a barrel,'' Adam Sieminski, Deutsche Bank's chief energy economist, said in a Bloomberg Radio interview today. ``You could look at the OPEC cut as a sign of weakness, not strength.''

That's early voters, not likely.

They are people who have already voted. That should actually carry more weight anyway, considering that not all "likely" voters will actually vote and the fact that the likely voter number is arrived at by using a voting model that isn't guaranteed to be correct.

McCain is genuinely in trouble in his own state.

GravatarSo apparently there was a Friar's Club roast of Matt Lauer the other night. And here's what his colleague Meredith Viera had to say:

...Meredith Viera, Lauer's Today costar started right in with, "That motherfucker Matt Lauer," and got a big laugh.

"I am amazed that I have time for this stupidity," she said, pointing out that she does the Today show, Who Wants to be a Millionaire?, has three kids and a husband, and that's a lot of balls to juggle.

"Look at Katie Couric. She juggled Matt's balls for six years. That's three years per ball." (At this point, the spectacle of a TV personality doing this kind of material had the room of 1,900 rolling.)

"She squeezed those suckers so tight, she left nothing for me. Thanks, Katie," Viera said, but she was just getting warmed up.

"People say he's so prim and proper, like he's got a stick up his ass. It's not a stick, my friends, it's Al Roker's dick."

After showing some slides from Beijing, with Lauer and Roker prancing in tights, she added: "Let' just say Al puts the 'meat' in 'meteorologist."

"I don't know if you knew this about him, but Matt is a lefty," she continued. "Which is precisely why NBC hired him." (Oh, the McCain camp is going to love that one.)

"Let's focus on Matt's numerous achievements in journalism," she said with the briefest of pauses. "OK, that's done."

She then congratulated him, and said, "I'll see you Monday, asshole."

GravatarWell, they won't let him MARRY her:

The Vatican has suspended a Roman Catholic bishop in southern India after he adopted a 26-year-old woman, a senior church official said Saturday.

Bishop John Thattungal, 58, will be barred from performing any religious or administrative duties until a formal inquiry into his conduct is completed, said the Rev. Stephen Alathara, a spokesman for the Kerala Catholic Bishops' Council, in a telephone interview from the southern Indian city of Kochi.

Alathara said the bishop's adoption of the woman earlier this year had upset other priests in the Kochi diocese.

"The majority of the priests were unhappy and asked for his resignation," he said, adding that the Vatican ordered the suspension on Thursday.

He said there are questions surrounding the legality of the adoption because the woman is not a minor.

Thattungal could not be reached for comment, but news reports in Kerala have quoted him as saying, "I have only fatherly love toward the woman who has spiritual powers. This relation is giving me spiritual refreshment."

A three-member committee of bishops will investigate Thattungal's conduct and submit a report to Archbishop Daniel Acharuparambil, the president of the Kerala Catholic Bishops' Council, who will then forward it to the Vatican, Alathara said.

The investigating committee does not have a set deadline, but the Vatican has asked for a report "as early as possible," he said.

Christians make up 2.5 percent of India's 1.1 billion people, the majority of whom are Hindus.

This election should have been about 8 years of lying, the war in Iraq, the botched war in Afghanistan, illegal wiretapping, Guantanamo, Hurricane Katrina, the U.S. Attorney scandal, abu-Ghraib, and every other fuckup from the Bush/Rove cabal.

Gravatar"Colorado's Katherine Harris threatens the '08 Election

David Sirota just scared me:

The story on the left describes [Secretary of State Mike] Coffman's efforts to invalidate roughly 5,000 registrations (depending on which source you ask). Here's the crux of what's going on:

"5,000 Coloradans whose voter status is in limbo because of [a] controversial check box...The registration form asks for a driver's license or state ID number. If applicants don't have that, they're supposed to check a box and then put down at least the last four digits of their Social Security numbers. But thousands of people didn't check the box. According to a policy adopted last year by Secretary of State Mike Coffman, these applications are supposed to be listed as incomplete...National and local voting-rights organizations criticize Coffman's policy, saying it violates other federal laws. They say Coffman is unfairly putting up barriers for people who are eligible to vote and want him to change his policy."
The check box is "controversial" because you are asked to check it on the form if you don't "have" a driver's license or ID card. Here's what it looks like on the form (which you can download and see yourself here):"

GravatarNew habits. I've been taking the Orange Line out of SFV into L.A. It's $2.50 roundtrip, but my company sells tokens at half price AND pays a dollar a day to employees who don't drive to work. Daily roundtrip cost comes to about 50 cents (after tax), which is less than I paid for the bus in high school.

Also, I've read 10 books on the bus since June. So, double-win.

GravatarMaybe the recession is causing people to stay home because they don't have any money to go shopping for entertainment?

Gravatar"mass transit now being seen as a little bit more desirable and cool"

come on Atrios, this is America where the populace is so terribly infatuated with looking in the mirror it could never possibly do a smart thing. (keep in mind, peak oil, skyrocketing gas prices, and global warming have been well known unavoidable catastrophes for more than 35 years to which the average American has just fed the beast doing absolutely nothing to avoid the disasters.)

No, I'm positive that in every recession with thousands of workers being thrown out of work and wages tanking for many others the total miles driven from whence they divine the average miles driven, decline (in direct proportion to the financial suffering of the population).
.

GravatarIt's definitely not cool that I can't park at my suburban New Jersy train station to commute into New York. (There's a ten-year waiting list for a parking permit and the surrounding neighborhood filled with residents-only parking. And there's no bus to the station, and no sidewalks for stretches so you can safely walk to the station.) This kind of bullshit has to be addressed before public transportation is a viable option for most people.
