GravatarThe University of Gloucestershire says it will investigate after the BBC obtained footage of students taking part in a bizarre initiation rite.

The secretly-filmed video shows students with bags over their heads, drinking and vomiting.

A university spokesman said a formal inquiry was being launched into alleged "bullying and intimidation" during initiation ceremonies.

The National Union of Students has called for a ban on initiations.

Initiation ceremonies have become traditional in UK universities and are normally organised by student sport clubs for first-year undergraduates.

The video obtained by the BBC shows a group of University of Gloucestershire students lined up against a wall with white plastic bags over their heads.

Another student, dressed in a Nazi-style uniform, is seen to encourage them to drink. Several students then vomit onto the ground before being paraded though the streets.

The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines ‘doctrine’ as ‘a: something that is taught; b: a principle or position or the body of principles in a branch of knowledge or system of belief,’ and the Bush Doctrine has taught us much about the body of principles in George Bush’s system of belief, which is to defend America and never blink, Charlie.”

GravatarObama Projects 269 Electoral Votes Even With Six-Point Cushion

We have been calling "battleground states" those states projected within five points, and states projected between 5-10 points "penumbra states." These are somewhat arbitrary labels, though ground game’s outer limit when one is overwhelmingly better than another is about five points.

When we last updated 538’s battleground states, we were in the midst of John McCain’s post-convention, post-Palin bloom-on-the-rose period. At that time, McCain’s projected win would be 274-264. Today, Barack Obama has 269 electoral votes outside the battleground zone.

No higher-order consciousness, no pineal gland housing the soul. What’s in there instead? Just balsam wood from tip to toe.” - M. Berube

A minor quibble: I believe Mr. B's Imaginary Interlocutor meant to say "balsa wood", there being nothing pleasant-smelling about Kristol and he is certainly little more than cellulose and a whole lot of air. Other than that, the II is entirely correct.

GravatarI LOLed until I LOLed again:

(One lovely tidbit from that column: Pollitt quotes Charles Murray’s New York Times Magazine interview with Deborah Solomon. On Palin, he says, “I’m in love. Truly and deeply in love,” Murray said. “The last thing we need are more pointy-headed intellectuals running the government.” Now, I know that Murray has been railing against the evil cognitive elite for much of his career, but the “pointy-headed intellectual” trope is a bit much, since Murray is, after all, an intellectual, and his head is by all accounts very, very pointy. Which is why it fits so well inside that Death Eater hood.)

GravatarByron York:

But there's no doubt there are concerns about Palin. If you talk to people in Alaska, away from the McCain campaign or Washington Republican circles, there's a feeling that the campaign has mishandled her. For my story on Palin's time as governor, out tomorrow in the electronic version of NR, I talked to some people who have known her for quite a while. Although we were talking about other things, one of them took a detour to the upcoming debate; what was said was just one person's opinion, but it's an opinion informed by a good bit of knowledge.

"The McCain people have got her freaked out," this person told me. "She has not found her voice. She has looked like hell in these interviews. It's not her. I don't know what's going on. I know she doesn't have any Alaska people around her since Todd left New York last week. No one from the governor's office is with her."

"They've circled the wagons around her and got her in a bubble," the source continued. "They've got her flipped out. She's afraid to talk, afraid to make a mistake."

Ditching First Dude was a mistake. He's the go-to guy, Sarah-wise.

GravatarPiracy off the coast of Somalia has cost up to $30m (£17m) in ransoms so far this year, a report has said.

The study by UK think-tank Chatham House said the number of hijack bids had more than doubled to 61 in 2008.

The report said ransoms received were in the range of $500,000 to $2m per ship and that the pirates were becoming more aggressive and assertive.

Pirates are currently demanding $20m (£10.9m) for a Ukrainian ship carrying 33 military tanks bound for Kenya.

Imagine what they'd say if Hillary Clinton ever cried....

GravatarWhen Sarah Palin was anointed of God to become president when John McCain's anger worm or whatever it may be finishes eating his brain, I read a little bit about her and I found that she is a far right religious extremist who is associated with a movement that is literally trying to raise an army to conquer the earth on behalf of Jesus and install Christian dominion over every land. Personally, I can't support that, I don't know about you. However, I was surprised to learn that she is also a blithering idiot.

It turns out that's not necessarily a bad thing. According to all the analyses of the upcoming debate that I've been reading, all she has to do to "win" the debate is ignore the actual questions and spout memorized attack lines against Barack Obama. It turns out that Gwen Ifill isn't allowed to follow up and point out that she didn't answer the question, because she's a member of the negro conspiracy to seize state power. Other than that, Palin just has to refrain from rolling her eyes and sighing, and she has to pretend to take notes while Biden is talking.

Meanwhile, Joe Biden will display astonishing erudition and a profound grasp of history, economics, international affairs and social policy. He will spew facts, figures, historical analogies, acronyms and the names of foreign leaders great and small like an intellectual power washer. His arguments will be concise, well-crafted, logically impeccable, and built on a solid foundation of fact. This means he will be an arrogant, out of touch elitist who cannot possibly understand the struggles of ordinary people and who is a mean bully who is trying to make poor little Sarah look stupid. Even though she is stupid, and that's why we like her.

Only in America is ignorance and indifference to truth and logic a qualification for high office. I would assume that people who don't know a whole lot about medicine don't seek out an incompetent doctor because somebody who actually knows medicine can't possibly understand their problems. I presume that people who don't know anything about plumbing or electrical wiring do not look for the most inept, alcoholic layabout they can possibly find to work on their house because they can relate to that person so much better than an arrogant elitist who went to trade school. But that's been the Republican presidential brand for as long as I can remember. Vote for Ronald Reagan, Vote for George W. Bush, they're just as dumb as you are. And it works.

GravatarFrom the Rude One: So I don't give a fuck about what Bush with boobs here has to say about jack shit.

NAIROBI - WND author and staff writer Jerome Corsi has arrived in the Kenyan capital to investigate Sen. Barack Obama's ties to the prime minister, who was appointed to the position to stop a wave of violence by Muslim supporters.

Corsi came at the invitation of Christian missionaries who contend the rise of Islam in the African nation has been spurred by an agreement Obama signed with Muslim leaders in an effort to elect Raila Odinga last December. Odinga lost the election but now shares power with the Kenyan president to appease Islamic leaders.

Corsi's highly critical book examining Obama's career, "The Obama Nation: Leftist Politics and the Cult of Personality," remains on the New York Times best-seller list after its publication Aug. 1. The book was No. 1 on the list for four straight weeks after its launch.

But then a non-imaginary interlocutor said a most interesting thing. (It was a dinner for twelve people, and I didn’t catch his name, or I’d tell you.) He pointed out that the right-wing culture war against pointy-headed intellectuals does not extend to the judiciary. On the contrary, he said, it’s as if they’re willing to run a cephalopod and a bag of hammers for the executive branch (I don’t think these were his exact words), but they actually recruit and train all their intellectual firepower for the courts (those were pretty much his exact words). And, of course, he’s right: Scalia, Alito, Roberts—these are all graduates from Pointyheaded Liberal Elite Law School, Evil Genius Division, and the glaring exception, Clarence Thomas, was a Palinesque conservative-affirmative-action fuck-you payback for the rejection of Elitist Evil Genius Robert Bork.

GravatarWouldn't it be awesome if she forced her handlers to drive her to a beauty shop in St. Louis, stormed in, picked up the clippers, and shaved her beehive?

And then burned a picture of the pope during the debate.

GravatarYeah, he won't attack Palin. But if he attacks the neocon worldview and McCain in particular, he'll do well.

Gravatarhalf a C'cola to Master D for the babbydaddy comment.

aaaargh.com?

GravatarIf Biden attacks anyone of course it should be McCain. He won't
be there, and Palin is in no position to defend McCrazy's policies.

Agreed. What Biden mostly needs to do tonight is not do anything to screw up. It won't matter whether the talking heads say she won the debate; VP debates don't win elections. If Biden acts condescending or something he can hurt the ticket. If he just gives good answers and treats Palin w reasonable respect, he'll do fine.

GravatarSorry, but I'd be willing to pay to see that on teevee.

You Texans are so weird.

GravatarMcBombBomb is wishing they had picked another moderator.

I wish they would have picked somebody else.
It would have definitely thrown Caribou Barbie off her game.

Molly Ivors

yep. Something like, "Governor Palin is doing a great job. But it is very difficult when what you have to defend is the miserable policies of McBush."

Gravatar leibniz leibkins : And then burned a picture of the pope during the debate.

You're mixing up your Mediagenic Bald Chicks.

Gravatar hope you're talking about Palin and not my Cubs tonight.

Why didn't they start Zambrano last night? It's not like they didn't have time to adjust their rotation. I don't get it.

Go Phils!!!

Gravatarwasn't spalin one of the mccain girls in that video last spring?

GravatarWhat Molly said. He'll put out things that she can't refute, because she won't know enough (anything) about them.

From her all we're going to get are talking points. Possibly in the right order.

Any zingers or gotchas will redound against him. Avoid them, stay fact-based and polite, and the contrast between the debaters' knowledge and sophistication will win the day.

GravatarHecate,

Which I am confident he will do. He was famously restrained in the primary debates, and has surely heard the message the last few days.

This will be the most rehersed debate ever, that's for sure.

The real x factor here is Ifill. Will she ask real questions, or the crap we've come to expect at events like these?

GravatarPirates are currently demanding $20m (£10.9m) for a Ukrainian ship carrying 33 military tanks bound for Kenya.

This is interesting for its audacity, and I'm sure Kenya will cough up something because they want their tanks back, but these pirates aren't exactly dealing from a position of strength: 33 tanks are going to be very hard to move on the black market and anyone who would actually buy their tanks from the likes of these pirates likely does not have the capacity to train their people to use them or the skills needed to maintain them.

Gravataryep. Something like, "Governor Palin is doing a great job. But it is very difficult when what you have to defend is the miserable policies of McBush."
cosmosis

Oh god, no, no, no. That really would sound condescending.

GravatarWill we find out whether or not Sarah Palin has a pen? Because I know for a fact that John McCain has a pen.

GravatarI know Palin has become a spectacle, but it still is a little creepy for major news networks to camp out for a whole day on a college campus having a pep rally prior to a VP debate.

GravatarBerube

There are plenty of Republican-voting people out there, I said, who are resentful and (guess what) bitter . . . because they truly believe they are being governed by high and mighty muck-a-mucks who sneer at their pastimes and their cherished local traditions, and they don’t see Obama (or Hillary either!) as someone who’ll give them the time of day. If this election gets framed as Ordinary People against Mr. Extra Extra Smart, I thought, the Democrats are going down in flames. Every time a liberal says, “of course our side should win this—we’re so much smarter than they are,” he (or she!) plays right into the right’s cultural-resentment script. And they make themselves sound like nineteen-year-old Objectivists into the bargain.

There is some truth to this but Berube goes way too far and he is dipping his toes into "We can't insult the rubes because they will get angry and that is the worst thing evah!" territory.

He did this occasionally during the "intelligent design" muckamuck a few years ago, refusing to deal with the lying scumbags as lying scumbags (i.e., just call them lying scumbags and end it). And that was a victory for "elitism" and "intelligence", but one that only became noteworthy BECAUSE of ignorance and the fear that you can't tell a fundie fuckwad to go fuck his fuckwad self.

And somewhat ironically given the last paragraph in Berube's article, the death blow was dealt by a conservative Republican appointed judge.

I can't emphasize this enough: handwringing by self-described liberals who are worried about offending the dangerous fundamentalist idiots who keep trying to hijack this country is a very bad thing. We've got an opportunity here and we need to take advantage. I don't mean taking advantage like a Repuke and passing bad laws to punish those who have fucked up ideas. I mean take advantage by propagandizing the fact that fundamentalist fucktards are dangerous and should be ashamed of themselves.

Fundies should have no more power and influence in national politics than the KKK, and preferably far less.

GravatarMake no mistake, such divisions as exist in our country are the product of deliberate policies by right-wing politicians, the media, and their corporate overlords. It serves their interest to divide and conquer.
