ah, the paper includes a discussion of irredentism.
now, there is a word I had to look up and it has current applications.

Dictionary:
irredentist

n.

One who advocates the recovery of territory culturally or historically related to one's nation but now subject to a foreign government.

Gravatarthat is subversive!

Yes. Yes it is.

GravatarI'm not so sure that this is just a civil war anymore. Moqtada al Sadr is a Shi'ite imam. The government is at least nominally Shi'ite.

As I understand it, the Badrists represent a sort of old Shi'a aristocracy? Also they have much closer ties to Iran. The Sadrists are poorer, nationalist, tend to be more urban and more religious.

Meanwhile, the Awakened Sunnis are just biding their time, taking our guns and money and waiting for the two big Shi'a parties to weaken each other so they can retake Bagdad. They've been quite open about it.

GravatarWhich side is Iran on?
Gimlet

That's a tough question. Clearly the Iranians would love to see the US humiliated. At the same time, Iraq had been an enemy for generations, and an unstable neighbor isn't exactly in their best interests.

The worst case scenario is that the Iranians will back the resistance just enough to drive the US out, preferably before a decent government is in place in Bagdhad, and then move their chosen leaders into power.

Gravataras to the topic of this post:
remember david brooks and plenty of others are saying the Iraq occupation will not matter to voters in November, and then they are also attacking OB for "being unrealistic" about the changing nature of the war in promising to have troops out within 16 months.

Neither Obama nor anyone else has any clue what the conditions will be like when the next president takes office. He could have responsibly said that he aims to bring the troops home but will make a judgment at the time. Instead, he rigidly locked himself into a policy that will not be fully implemented for another three years.

If Obama is elected, he will either go back on this pledge — in which case he would destroy his credibility — or he will risk genocide in the region and a viciously polarizing political war at home.

Gravatar"Which side is Iran on?"

That makes it a proxy war, which is even a worse clusterfuck.

We will end up fighting Iran to and inflaming the entire Arab world.

Way to go, Captain Chimpypants.

GravatarI think we are right in the middle of a war of resistance against the US occupiers and the "Vichy" Iraqi government.
Diane C. Barking-Mad

Analogy is always tricky when discussing historical events but I think this one is about as close as you can get. If I read my Juan Cole correctly, al-Sadr is far and away more of an "Iraqi nationalist" than Maliki, who besides being a US puppet is considerably cozier with the Iranian regime than his populace.

The US press of course gets this completely backwards every time they open their mouths and squawk on the subject. Their printers seem to have a macro requiring the words "Muqtada al-Sadr" to be preceded with "pro-Iranian" as well as "radical cleric."

this is one of those times I hope very hard the troops have their lines of supply/retreat secured. Because there aren't enough helicopters in Iraq to take people out off the rooftops this time.

Whatever happened to her?

http://www6.comcast.net/entertai.../France.Bardot/

GravatarSomebody asked upthread about the "wall" and Sadr City. This is not a wall around the city but through it, cutting it in half. The idea is that the "good" poor Shi'ia live in one part and the "bad" forces of al-Sadr are in the other, and we will "protect" the good ones from the bad ones while squeezing the latter until we can go in and "clean them out."

Unfortunately Sadr City is not a city in that sense at all but, to employ dangerous analogy again, more like Harlem would be to New York City. So imagine buildng a wall through the middle of Harlem to isolate half of it from the other half. Think of the logistics of construction to begin with. Then the daily lives of people who are already poor and may be cut off from portions of their families, their regular mosques, their accustomed marketplaces, etc. and have to pass through checkpoints to visit same.

Then picture the squeeze-and-sweep operation in the middle of this. As summer is coming on, with no detectable improvement in the jobs situation, electricity supply, food, sewage or other infrastructure. Did i mention summer is coming on?

The name "al QaQa" keeps coming to mind.

GravatarI think al Sadr will prevail over Malaki and the Badrists as their support deserts to Sadr without a climatic battle.

Then all that remains are the American... er Coalition troops.

And the current equilibrium with three centers of power can't last. So I guess the US is right to force the issue before it automatically defaults to Sadr.

GravatarNot true. The PR war has been carried on far more consistently and message control is a lot more sophisticated than in Vietnam.

Not really. Took almost 2 decades before the country decided Vietnam was a clusterfuck. We went through 3 Presidents, a major series of war protests, riots and demonstrations in colleges and cities throughout the country, denunciation by everyone from hippies to RAND analyst Daniel Ellsberg to MLK Jr. his own self...and still, when the last chopper finally left Hanoi, I know a lot of people who thought we could have won.

Almost no one thinks that now, except a handful of GOP public figures. I don't think sentiment against Vietnam ever reached the levels of sentiment against this war. I also don't see any "Rambo" series of movies coming out of this war, nor even a "Deer Hunter."

Even the Pentagon has called this a "major debacle." We are so far beyond Vietnam right now, we can't even see that war anymore....

One pair of numbers only, and it's grimly hilarious. During the past eight years:

The top 1% have seen their income climb by 11%.

The bottom 99% have seen their income climb by 1%.

The GOP is essentially a conspiracy to take money from the middle and lower classes (and even the lower upper class) and give it to the very top of the income group. Yeah, I know, that makes me guilty of screeching "Class Warfare!"

See, if there's a fire, and I call the fire department, I'm guilty of arson, at least according to the wingnuts.

In my opinion, this couldn't be allowed for two reasons. First, you would have slavery going on across the border. I don't think that would have worked long term for many reasons, and eventually it would likely have spilled over into war anyway. Then, if parts of your country can just pull out whenever they wish, the country rips itself to bits. Not good. You'll recall that the states united in the fi
