GravatarThe accomplished ditching of the United Airline plane pilot by Chesley B. Sullenberger III was the perfect coda to the Bush years.
In a fitting coincidence, it even overshadowed the president's final address to the nation; reality once again intruding on the public relations fantasies of the Bush administration.
At the center, the event was occupied by a man who is everything George W. Bush is not; A well trained professional, who took his job and responsibilities seriously, reacted calmly under extremis and with precision and care. His moment of truth became a job well done.
Nice moment. Glorious news.
More to Come.

Rachel Maddow had a wonderful opening last night in which she discussed, at length, what the incident represented: the concerted effort to create the conditions that when an emergency occurs, people calming, cooly, and with a sense of purpose address the emergency and mitigate its effects.

If the Randites had their way, all the infrastructure, both physical and social, that made that rescue possible would be abolished.

Of course, this didn't happen, and we observe in passing that our host has taught us upon multiple occasions that those who make errant predictions are "wankers".

Anyone else remember how the media excused their poor performance during the runup to the war by saying most Democratic politicians weren't being vocal against it. (We'll just set aside Ted Kennedy and Robert Byrd to help them make their argument). So now when democrats are being vocal about opposing policies and investigating them, the media characterizes them as liberal score settlers. Frigging shameless.

as usual, i think it'll be "the economy, stupid!" that will make or break the dems in '10 and '12. obama has a real opportunity, but it's also a double edged sword. he's going to get the shortest honeymoon ever for any preznit, for lots of reasons, and who else thinks that we're just scraping the polarbear shit off the iceberg of economic and fiscal mismanagement that Chimpy created? the way they always revise econ-related numbers really scares me. i worry there's a whole "off the books" mess that obama is going to inherit, which will make a lot of his stimulus ideas "impossible" in the minds of too many in congress. anyway, i worry too much. but it's true that the warm fuzzies people have for him now won't last if he can't turn things around, esp for the middle class.

Of course I recognized the gramatical error of my comment but thought others would be smart enough.

Apparently, you're just trying to start shit.

GravatarOccasionally I feel bad for not donating to NPR anymore. But then I hear something that only reinforces my opinion that they aren't worth a nickel of my money. And it never takes long.

Fuck 'em for trying to muck up the LRT route in St. Paul. Using air time to advocate rerouting the train? Really fucking cool, MPR.

GravatarIf you're not, you know why I say this.
.
Jeffraham Prestonian

Um, I have no idea what you're talking about. I do know I was namestolen alot this morning..

GravatarGuess the NTSB contractors couldn't get the A320 onto the barge on schedule.

Gravatarwhich will make a lot of his stimulus ideas "impossible" in the minds of too many in congress. anyway, i worry too much. but it's true that the warm fuzzies people have for him now won't last if he can't turn things around, esp for the middle class.
chicago dyke, ungeeked

There's already plenty of talk about how we can't possibly afford Medicare and Social Security any longer.

A war, though, and 10 trillion in Repub deficits (Reagan and Dubya), that's no problem.

GravatarI love that shamwow guy, did youknow he moved on to a different infomerical or commercial, i forget the product but he got another job.

GravatarOh I see, Duane. There was a namestealer called ANNIE, so of course you have to ask if it was me.

Know what? Ignore me, baby.

GravatarThe whole damn party is, frankly.

steve simels

Irrelevance suits them.

Gravatar"About 7 bucks, tops."

Wow, the US IS expensive! Try buying them at ALDI. I guess its even cheaper than Walmart. Sam's Stores had to close here in Germany because they were seen as too expensive...

GravatarA 47-year-old Wisconsin man is in jail for making death threats against Obama on the Internet .

Be aware, trolls.

GravatarFuck 'em for trying to muck up the LRT route in St. Paul. Using air time to advocate rerouting the train? Really fucking cool, MPR.
AndyMN, shovel-ready

Amen, brother.

And did you hear Bill Kling at the last Morning Show, the one at the Fitzgerald? Talking, jokingly, about a reprieve, in front of thousands of people who loved that show, that he cancelled?

I wouldn't piss on him if he was on fire.

GravatarNo one will be getting rid of Social Security and no one will be cutting benefits. Medicare will be dealt with.

Medicaid is an entirely different story.

GravatarI do know I was namestolen alot this morning..
Duane V

Are you sure it wasn't you?? :P

GravatarOr just plain dumb. Speaking of bricks, I just got one that from an old ranchero style home with the ornate oracle look. The brick, not the home. To add to my collection, not homes but different bricks.

GravatarI am talking demographics here. If the GOP wants to continue being the racist, xenophobic, anti choice, anti gay, black, latino party they are quite fucked.

Population trends make them screwed. The GOP literally has to change or it's over for them.

The guy from fivethirtyeight had an interesting article on the demographics of this last election. The Republicans got old white people in rural areas. Not a growing demographic

GravatarKnow what? Ignore me, baby.
annie

I was too. It's Trolls trying to start shit, as usual.

GravatarMy Mom bought those shamwow things. They charged 70 bucks on her card "on accident".

Gravatar Duane V: Um, I have no idea what you're talking about. I do know I was namestolen alot this morning..

I know -- and it's a perfect counterfeit to me, since the real you posts a lot of short bursts (as do I), as does the fake you.

The real you can fix it.
.

GravatarWe don't have Aldi, I don't drive, and I'm mobility challenged. I buy what I can budget in and need.

GravatarMy Mom bought those shamwow things.

do they work?

GravatarWhat's really infuriating is the fact that we're supposed to forget it all happened and let these assholes go collect speaking fees.
Duane V, AnarchoSyndicalist | 01.17.09 - 1:31 pm | #

As I've said before, if we've learned anything since Watergate it's that in this country the Wages of Sin are a fat book contract and a gig on TV.

GravatarMost Egregious Looming Pardon: Donald Rumsfeld.

GravatarWow, the US IS expensive! Try buying them at ALDI.

I do. It's a rare month I spend $2 on paper towels.
.

GravatarThe guy from fivethirtyeight had an interesting article on the demographics of this last election. The Republicans got old white people in rural areas. Not a growing demographic

Atrios linked, just after the election, to a map showing where the GOP gained this last cycle, by county.

There was this swath of red running from the Appaliachians, through Tennessee, to the Ozarks.

Upland Scots-Irish territory.

Hillbillies.

Poor white trash.

GravatarAnd I'm the "asshole"?

I don't think so.

GravatarA 47-year-old Wisconsin man is in jail for making death threats against Obama on the Internet .

plantsman

Fuck no. I hope they remain unaware.

I don't have to hope--they are and always will be.

GravatarAre you sure it wasn't you?? :P
annie

Hah...

I don't usually act like a moron.

If ever you see someone using my name, and attacking people randomly, it ain't me.

Gravatar"I wouldn't piss on him if he was on fire."

Imho there is flawed logic in this statement. Why not piss on him as long as he isn't on fire?
:D

GravatarTo add to my collection, not homes but different bricks.
20¿O9

I have one of those collections, more like a pile. I dug some out of the foundation of an old whorehouse in LA and had them added to my house when I had the brick repaired. I found a bunch more in an old I have no what idea what it was in the woods. Clay bricks are cool.

GravatarI wouldn't piss on him if he was on fire.

Really.

The city ponied up millions to help them expand their studios on 7th & Cedar (they were threatening to move to Minneapolis). They knew full well that the train was gonna pass them, and worked with the Met Council on noise impact studies.

Someone mentioned somewhere that Decca(?) Records' studio in London sits on top of a tube route, yet they were able to churn out tons of quality recordings.

GravatarAre you sure it wasn't you?? :P

Hey Allen -- you've heard that they now make suppositories out of Cheetos, right?

And don't bother telling me I've already asked you that. Your 3rd favorite rhetorical ploy, I know, but it's really tired.

GravatarI'm considering starting a hedge fund manager "disappearance" service.

GravatarOf course NPR is trying to manufacture a false consensus. They're just fulfilling their function. Manufacturing consent..

Everytime that station allows phone calls regarding investigations about torture or surveillance or any other crap W has pulled the majority of the callers say Hell yeah, investigate. By my admittedly rough estimate it's probably 5 to 1 in favor of investigations and even prosecutions. And yet the hosts cannot wrap their minds around the fact that people want to know what happened and if necessary want prosecutions.

GravatarIf Obama drove to Washington he'd probably get pulled over a dozen times.

GravatarThe real you can fix it.

Jeffraham Prestonian

I know. Gravatar.

Gravatar$1m a day to live in my attic.

Gravatardo they work?

Yeah, but so do newspapers.

GravatarAnd yet the hosts cannot wrap their minds around the fact that people want to know what happened and if necessary want prosecutions.

The idea of enforcing the law on the elite just doesn't cross their pea sized minds.

GravatarDecca is indeed a label, used to be in the US as well. The Stones started out on Decca UK, iirc.

GravatarI was too. It's Trolls trying to start shit, as usual.

No, it's a nasty regular that is doing the early morning namestealing. He is doing it again now.

Driving While Black. Illegal in all 50 states.

GravatarI'm thinkin about buying a "Snuggie"...any comments?

Gravatar Duane V: If ever you see someone using my name, and attacking people randomly, it ain't me.

When I see a regular start talking almost exclusively to a troll, that smells funny to me (unless you're one of the few here that can't keep their hand out of their pants, so to speak).
.

GravatarDriving While Black. Illegal in all 50 states.

Nearly as bad as "driving while hippie".

GravatarMany of the tubes in London are quite deeply buried.

My comment: What's a Snuggie?

GravatarThe National Safety Council recommended it, cd; but it has no force of law.
plantsman

thanks, plants. let's just hope some dogooder congresscritter doesn't decide to make a related bill the Most Important Issue of the Year. like someone said above, we've got plenty more important issues to deal with, right now.

GravatarGaza strikes ahead of truce vote

Israel's military has carried out 50 air strikes in Gaza overnight as its cabinet prepares to vote on a proposal for a unilateral ceasefire.

Holocaust?

GravatarImho there is flawed logic in this statement. Why not piss on him as long as he isn't on fire?

You're right! I would piss on him, as long as he isn't on fire!

I now have a look of shamefaced guilt.

My frequent trips to NOLA from Arkansas almost always involved conversations with Mississippi police officers.

GravatarNot a bad buy, if the fleece is nice.

I intuited that about you and me. I also have a piece of a brick from the 1800s in my collection from a whore house here, not a whore who gave me the brick, just a brick I dug up.

GravatarBe sure to write to Karl, so he can pass your thanks on to the Chimp.

GravatarI hope that one of Obama's first acts as President is to put a moratorium on Diablo Cody.

I don't generally talk to Trolls. At them, once in a while.

Gravatarlet's just hope some dogooder congresscritter doesn't decide to make a related bill the Most Important Issue of the Year.

No, that would be violence in videogames or steroids in professional baseball.

They don't seem to have a back to them. Put your robe on backwards.

I used to work for a sign company in an industrial park in an upscale suburb. Our painter was named Al, and he was black. He got pulled over a lot, on the way to work.

GravatarIt's a fleece blanket with sleeves on one end.

GravatarBe sure to write to Karl, so he can pass your thanks on to the Chimp.

Oh, where to begin...

GravatarLargest crowd ever for an inauguration - LBJ in 1964

Obama's gonna break that easy.

GravatarI don't want a snuggie because it's effective or a good buy...I want to buy it simply that they describe it as a blanket with sleeves...which to me seems like the best way to actually describe a shirt. I love that they ignore the fact that they are selling a backwards robe, and ignore how ridiculous the product is...it's a selling point for me.

GravatarSo you would piss on someone you dislike if they were on fire to put it out?

GravatarIf you have the money to bug things on a lark, why the hell not?

GravatarHeh. "buy."

GravatarPresidentin' while black: now legal in all 50 states.

Suck it, wingnuts!

Gravatarhe'd probably get pulled over a dozen times

Depends on where he starts from.

GravatarOh, cool Obama pic I hadn't see before.
#

Gravatar"I wouldn't piss on him if he were on fire"

Of course not.

those situations call for an accelerant.

GravatarPresidentin' while black: now legal in all 50 states.

Can I get an "amen"?

GravatarTakes alot of hate not to piss on someone who was on fire. I would piss on them to put it out. I just don't have it in me not to.

GravatarHappy birthday, Steve Earle!

GravatarDuane, you should get a gravatar. I peeked in late last night and it was v. v. weird.

GravatarSteve Earle and Michelle Obama share a birthday?

GravatarI love that they ignore the fact that they are selling a backwards robe, and ignore how ridiculous the product is...it's a selling point for me.

Backwards garments are WEIRD.

For the first time in my life last week, I went into a hospital (for a diagnostic procedure). I'd never worn one of those "tie in the back" hospital gowns in my life. It was so weird to put it on...it didn't seem right to put it on the "right way".

GravatarI would not piss on anybody who was on fire. There would be some nasty burns.

GravatarI rarely encounter people on fire.

LOL! but also :grrr: and "true."

a black male friend and i once got pulled over by a hick cop up north. the cop demanded my 13yo sister show him her license. i pointed out she wasn't old enough to have one, and he got this disappointed look on his face. i don't like to wonder what he was thinking.

GravatarSheetskis

Gravatar"I rarely encounter people on fire"

Me neither- and I imagine instinct would kick in and I would probably do what it took- pissing, even- to put the fire out.

And *then* learn it was someone I really didn't like...

GravatarOh noes!

I've killed another thread!

GravatarBad aangus!

GravatarI understand protocol, but still, my wife would be; "I don't care if you're president, don't walk in front of me like that"

GravatarPretty soon I'm going to have a whole cemetary out back!
