Gravatarblerb, i'm only half kidding about meth and repukes. in the rural areas of this country, where the republican base live, meth is decimating communities and tearing apart families, and there is so little being done about it besides jailing the more unfortunate who get caught.

meth is the greatest evil rural america has faced, it's like crack and the black community. it makes me very sad, because i know so many rural families don't have the understanding or narrative to deal with a drug plague like this. and it's killing them.

GravatarLarry Craig to stick around
http://talkingpointsmemo.com/arc...ives/ 054562.php
It's Sept. 29; do you know where your Larry Craig resignation is?

Based on a self-imposed deadline announced a month ago, the Idaho Republican, who pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct after making advances towards an undercover police officer in a Minneapolis airport men's room, was supposed to step down from the Senate tomorrow. That's clearly not going to happen.

As of Wednesday, Craig said he would await a judge's ruling on his request to withdraw his guilty plea, before making a final decision on whether to resign. That could take a couple of weeks, and perhaps longer depending on appeals and any possible new charges prosecutors may file.

But in a "Hardball" interview the other day, Craig lawyer Stanley Brand suggested the senator may disregard the outcome of his case in Minnesota, and may very well stick around regardless.

MATTHEWS: Stan Brand, is your sense that the senator may well be able to hang on until the end of his term?

BRAND: I -- think that's conceivable, especially if he gets some type of relief in Minnesota. But I don't think it depends on that.

For those keeping score at home, as of a couple of weeks ago, a favorable ruling in Minnesota was the only thing that would keep Craig from resigning. Now, the senator may decide that a misdemeanor charge on his record isn't the end of the world.

Craig seems to be nearing the point in which he tells his colleagues, "If you want me to go, you're going to have to expel me."

GravatarWell, for one thing, Gingrich's "foundation" is about wanking, not "winning the future", so that killed that idea.

Earth's magnetic field is fading. Today it is about 10 percent weaker than it was when German mathematician Carl Friedrich Gauss started keeping tabs on it in 1845, scientists say.

If the trend continues, the field may collapse altogether and then reverse. Compasses would point south instead of north.

GravatarTwo girls and a guy drank some beer
And fell into a mood struck by cheer
They closed down the bar
And blew off the car
Because they couldn’t straight the thing steer

Walking the streets arm in arm
They wanted to get way out of harm
They booked a nice room
Where the cheer could resume
And unplugged the phone and alarm

GravatarThere was just one big king sized bed
“That’s enough for us all,” one girl said
The other girl smiled
The guy felt beguiled
So they all fell on the bed spread

They key to this trick was the feel
The fondness felt for each was real
They undressed each other
And slipped under cover
And his zeal he could not conceal

GravatarThe girls both took turns with his “friend”
His hands to them both did attend
They were into each other
And had one after another
And this seemed to go on to no end

Then one girl just wanted to watch
So she sat there and sipped on her scotch
The other two played
And love once more was made
Then the first found she had a wet crotch

At least not in minutes less than ten

With smiles, hugs, kisses and glee

And all fell asleep
And didn’t wake up until three

Here in CA, in the Central Valley you can't throw a rock without hitting a Mexican meth lab. It is indeed a scourge.

GravatarIt's way worse than crack, which was vastly oversold as the Drug That Instantly Turned You Into a Zombie.

true, but back then people didn't really have something to compare it to, the better to understand how "superaddictive" drugs really work. there has always been smack in the black community, but it didn't overwhelm us in the same way crack did.

i guess what i'm getting at is that in the black community, there was an already established social narrative about addictive drugs when crack started to show up (thanks CIA!). in rural areas, people have believed that drugs only addict "those" people, and that so long as you go to church and vote republican, you won't have to worry about drugs in your family. the oxyC trade is another thing sweeping rural america right now. speaking with some medical professionals about this recently, i was told that there is still a great deal of head-in-the-sandism in rural areas. people just don't want to believe little xtian sally would ever whore herself for meth.

Gravatarmeth is indeed a terrible drug...

GravatarMore like everyone has said no to Newt:

Gingrich Says No to White House Bid
By LIBBY QUAID, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich will not run for president in 2008 after determining he could not legally explore a bid and remain as head of his tax-exempt political organization, a spokesman said Saturday.

"Newt is not running," spokesman Rick Tyler said. "It is legally impermissible for him to continue on as chairman of American Solutions (for Winning the Future) and to explore a campaign for president."

Gingrich decided "to continue on raising the challenges America faces and finding solutions to those challenges" as the group's chairman, Tyler said, "rather than pursuing the presidency."

Only on Friday, Gingrich said he had given himself a deadline of Oct. 21 to raise $30 million for a possible White House and that the task was difficult, through not impossible.

Got to ride on shitty blacktop that had been "chewed" for resurfacing. Fun on 10" wheels... not!

Rode over to Cafe Coco, had a cuppa hazelnut coffee.

Then, rode way over across the river, into East Nashville, to drop in on my good buddy James. He e-mailed me, whining about why I didn't buy my Canyon Dancer from him... well, hail! I didn't know he carried 'em! Last time I was there it was scooters and helmets. Now, it's scooters, helmets, trunks, baskets and tires.

But James wasn't there. He's on tour with some band... the Spongebathers? I dunno. Anyway, I'll go back and fuck with him some other time.

I think their direct reaction to a Constitutional reading would declare volumes about where we've come as a nation. That's my goal. In their face with what America SHOULD be.

GravatarAs a registered nurse I have doled out enough Percocets in my career to almost satisfy Rushbo for a week. Maybe half a week. I've only been a nurse for 15 years.

Having said that, I actually worry more about the acetaminophen component of the pill than the narcotic element. I always warn people not to use Tylenol and then if it doesn't work go to the Percocets. Take the Percs first, otherwise you may end up getting more than the 4,000mg/day limit for safe acetaminophen usage.

GravatarLet's just say I think it's a pretty stupid drug. An instant high and a hideous crash fifteen seconds later.

the second most horrifying moment of my marriage (after the time he tried to strangle me to death) was watching my ex scrabble on the floor in search of a couple crumbs of crack he'd dropped, after he'd smoked most of his dose that day. i don't think i've ever seen anything more pitiful in my life. he was so desperate (because he'd spent all our money on it and knew he couldn't smoke any more until he beat me and took my next paycheck) and was so frantic to get that one last moment of high.

i'm all for decriminalization, and legalization of pot and other natural, not enhanced plants that bring a high. but processed cocaine, meth, smack- these things should never be completely legal, and people addicted to them should be given months of free treatment, until they are safely in the clear. when i'm in charge, i promise i'll make this happen. think newt will share his now-unneeded campaign money with me? i could still make a run for it...

GravatarOT: The four cooling towers at Calder Hall in Cumbria, the world's first full-scale nuclear power station, have been demolished.

Hundreds of people gathered to watch as the 88m-high towers on the Sellafield site were detonated in pairs at 0900 BST and five minutes later.

A massive cloud of dust blew over the Irish Sea as they came down.

The towers, which had stood for 50 years, were regarded as a major part of Britain's industrial heritage.

Their dismantling, part of Calder Hall's decommissioning, comes more than four years after electricity generation ceased at the site.

Gravatar"The battle for Great Britain" ran the headline in Poland's most important newspaper, Gazeta Wyborcza, earlier this month. Printed just days after the nationalist prime minister, Jaroslaw Kaczynski, called a snap election for October 21, the story detailed how the country's top politicians had finally woken up to just how many of their electorate - well over a million by Polish estimates - had swanned off to the UK and Ireland since Poland joined the EU in 2004. The MPs, reported the paper, were going on the stump abroad.

Gravatar.DWD - Uncivil

If you are going to take anything other than the opiates, stick to things with ibuprofen, aspirin, or naprosyn and NOT acetominophen, which is what Excedrin has (in addition to caffeine, so it's not so good if you're trying to get off coffee).

GravatarOT: The French government and France's largest company, Total, were struggling yesterday to contain growing criticism of the oil company's record in Burma.

Total and the French government have rejected pleas from Burmese opposition and French trades unions and human rights group for the oil giant to suspend its activities in the Yadana gas field in southern Burma.

Critics point out Total is the largest economic operator in Burma and a significant conduit of cash to the military regime. Several human rights groups have accused Total of making use of forced or child labour – something the oil company angrily rejects.

Paris, and the company, argue that Total's presence is, on the whole, a force for good. Withdrawal would allow carte blanche for Chinese or other companies which would be "less respectful of ethical issues".

GravatarUS occupation helicopters attack building in Baghdad killing two women, four children, seven men while asleep.

US forces carried out an air strike early on Friday, killing at least 10 people, including women and children, in a building in Baghdad, Iraqi officials said.

Friday's air raid targeted a building in the Al-Saha neighbourhood in southwestern Baghdad where families were sleeping, the Iraqi officials said.

Bodies were pulled out of the rubble of the building, which was destroyed.

"Ten people were killed and seven wounded when American helicopters attacked Building No 139 at 2.00 am. We have no idea of the reason for the attack," said an interior ministry official

Gravatarwhat anthrax attacks?

I'd say that there were an inside job that had all the makings of a Karl Rove dirty trick.

Only Democrats and the "liberal" media were targeted. Bushco's objective was to scare them into submission.
Richard | Homepage | 09.29.07 - 1:38 pm | #

Good -- it's not just me.

My personal theory -- based on nothing more than reading too many thrillers by Ross Thomas and Robert Littell -- is that the anthrax attacks were supposed to be 9/11 -- that is, the attack on our soil that would be the trigger for the invasion of Iraq. (Said invasion, we know, was in the planning stages almost from the moment this "administration" took office.)

Then Bush family friend Osama bin Laden provided a much better 9/11, and the rest, as they say, is history. But by that time the anthrax scheme was too far along, with too many cutouts and layers of deniability, to be rescinded.

But that's just me. I'd like to think I'm just being paranoid. But as Joseph Wilson pointed out, there are no longer any tinfoil hats.

Gravatar"That was my skull, I'm so wasted"

GravatarRe: Iraq. We were arguing about it last night and I was going on and on about how the Democrats are refusing to give up on the occupation because they believe they may yet realize some benefit out of it. GravatarPalestinian refugees living in Iraq are the hidden victims of the Iraq conflict -- suffering threats, torture, killings and appalling living conditions in refugee camps such al-Waleed near the Syrian border, according to a new report by Amnesty International.

The report Iraq: human rights abuses against Palestinian refugees looks at the human rights abuses committed against Palestinians living in Iraq since the US-led invasion in 2003 and highlights the lack of action by the Iraqi government and the Multi-National Force to protect them.

GravatarA few years back, standing in front of a church to attend a funeral service for a distant acquainance who'd been killed at a bar, a bystander in an armed robbery, I ran into another mutual acquaintance I hadn't seen in years.

I'd known this guy and the victim as part of a neighborhood freak scene, so we eventually started comparing notes on recreational drug use over the years.

However inappropriately, I have a lasting memory of this guy hilariously relating how he'd gotten into an episode of crack addiction. He included every single point referenced in comments here:

... You light 'er up and suck as hard as you can, until your lungs are on fire and feel like they're gonna explode... then it's, like, this terrific, incredible rush that lasts for about 15 seconds. And it feels like your heart is gonna jump right out of your chest. And then it's completely over and all you can think of is doing it again... and you try to toke even harder each time, 'cause you didn't have that much in the first place... and when there's none left, you crawl around on the floor picking up grains of salt... crumbs of food... dandruff... and who knows what shit... and sometimes you try to smoke it anyway, even when you know it isn't crack... it's totally fucked up, man. I don't recommend it..."

Which is extremely suspicious, since none of the high-ranking GOP were attacked. Circumstances point to it being a PNAC-engineered "Pearl Harbor event" plan that became moot after the successful 9/11 attacks. But we'll never know unless somebody cares enough to investigate.

GravatarIck, slanties. Someone hand me the spray.

GravatarBut I think that's more of a CYA for their lack of security.

well that's what I was suggesting (or, thought I was suggesting)... they might have an idea who it was but more importantly, how it was gotten hold of, and it would look very bad for that to be public knowledge.

Gravatarbah, after one of my operations I was prescribed morphine on demand. Took one hit and decided I didn't like it. Stuck with two tylenol + at bedtime and ibu during the day.

Gravatarfrom Wikipedia:

Senator Patrick Leahy, one of the recipients of an anthrax letter, publicly stated just before the sixth anniversary of the case that he believes people within the US government know the source of the anthrax powder.

There was an investigation, of sorts, and on that went deeper than would have been allowed if it was a real inside job.

They couldn't know ahead of time that the usual markers would not have differentiated.

My bets are on the Utah lab, though.

Gravatar
I'm personally convinced that the anthrax attacks was a lone nutbar with lab access.

Senator Leahy's opinion, from a few weeks ago...

http://vermontdailybriefing.com/?p=729

Leahy: What I want to know — I have a theory. But what I want to know is why me, why Tom Daschle, why Tom Brokaw?

VDB: Right. That all fits into the profile of a kind of hard-core and obviously insane ideologue on the far Right, somebody who would fixate on especially Tom Daschle, who at that point was the target of daily, vitriolic attacks on Right-wing talk radio.

Leahy: [Slowly, with a little shake of the head] I don’t think it’s somebody insane. I’d accept everything else you said. But I don’t think it’s somebody insane. And I think there are people within our government — certainly from the source of it — who know where it came from. [Taps the table to let that settle in] And these people may not have had anything to do with it, but they certainly know where it came from.

Gravatardo take it easy on the E, renato. i gave myself a lifetime max, and once i reached it i quit for good. it is so terribly damaging on the brain, and if you do too much, lifelong depression issues will result.

I don't know if they could have known for sure. The problem is the stability of the anthrax genome. It was Ames, and it was "fresh". That doesn't actually narrow it down a whole hell of a lot.

But the Utah lab had just gotten theirs, and it would have been easier to have fucked with the inventory.

Gravataroccasional is good. the problem with E/X/K/G is that the effects are cumulative. it damages those parts of the brain that have to do with seratonin uptake, iirc. if you do too much, you will be at great risk for permanent depression.

i'd say no more than 25 doses in a lifetime, although i know others who think you can do more and be OK.

Gravatarthere's only so many places from which it could have come.
r€nato

The problem is that the anthrax genome is suprisingly stable. Knowing which of those places is not that straighforward.

Gravatarbelieve me ,chidy, I have no intention of permanently damaging my brain... it's too sexy

GravatarAfternoon, rational people.

My theory is that the anthrax "attack" was done by one person who had the access and the know-how who just wanted folks to see just how easy an attack could be.

That this government didn't look too hard for him or her makes sense: it dovetailed nicely with its own plans.

GravatarAnmd Demeraol sucks. Hangover lasts into the next day.

Gimme the morphine.

GravatarM drugs aren't the best thing for your brain, but if you keep it to occasional use, they're not likely to give you serious problems. I never much liked the high, though. Way too speedy for me. They are all meth derivatives, you know. The MA in MDMA stands for "methamphetamine". For my money, good pure L is the best drug experience there is. Veey low potential for brain damage, and essentially no potential for addiction. But alas, parenthood has put an end to that for me....

Considering that we are talking about an administration that manufactured evidence to start a war and is attempting to do so again, has employed torture on regular basis, and has used it's justice department to try and throw elections, talk of tinfoil in this case seems a trifle naive.

The nature of those attacks is highly suspicious.

GravatarSo much disinformation, can we even trust that we know which strain it was?
Sparkle Plenty

Given that the lab that did the testing is not actually part of the US .gov... I'd say that wasn't the issue.

Ames is the most common strain in circulation. Anthrax is highly stable. It is not particularly suprising that the intitial testing could not determine which lab it came from of the ones tested (not all labs world-wide have submitted samples, BTW).

A couple of labs were eliminated as suspects, though. Divergent strains.

Gravatarhe Department of Justice and the FBI agreed that no additional briefings to Congress would be provided.

this is why i am so frustrated with the dem leadership. isn't there some stuff in the constitution n shit that congress has the power to compel testimony from people? what, is bush going to claim 'executive priv?'

i have no opinion that i will seriously defend in this matter because i just don't think we've been given the information to make a sound judgement. i think that given the bushies' record so far, it's stupid not to contemplate that it was deliberate and ordered from higher up. otoh, people working with that kind of weapons development are a breed unto themselves, you have to be or you don't get the clearance. so the 'lone wingnut' theory also carries water in my mind. unfortunately i don't think we'll ever know.

Gravatargeor3ge: That's hilarious, JP. Did you capture that with cellphone cam?

Nope; my shitty $20 Virgin phone doesn't have a camera. I used this.
.

GravatarAmazing, isn't it, how pedophelia springs so readily to the GOP mind.

Of course it's not. It's Turdblossom's M.O. from way back.

Some of Kennedy's campaign commercials touted his volunteer work, including one that showed him holding hands with children. "We were trying to counter the positives from that ad," a former Rove staffer told me, explaining that some within the See camp initiated a whisper campaign that Kennedy was a pedophile. "It was our standard practice to use the University of Alabama Law School to disseminate whisper-campaign information," the staffer went on. "That was a major device we used for the transmission of this stuff. The students at the law school are from all over the state, and that's one of the ways that Karl got the information out—he knew the law students would take it back to their home towns and it would get out." This would create the impression that the lie was in fact common knowledge across the state. "What Rove does," says Joe Perkins, "is try to make something so bad for a family that the candidate will not subject the family to the hardship. Mark is not your typical Alabama macho, beer-drinkin', tobacco-chewin', pickup-drivin' kind of guy. He is a small, well-groomed, well-educated family man, and what they tried to do was make him look like a homosexual pedophile. That was really, really hard to take."

The other benefit the Bush junta reaped is Senators and Representatives are no longer exposed to the deluge of mails they get when they fuck up and vote for illegal wiretapping and giving Bush hundreds of billions for Iraq.

Richard

It's also the modus operendi of a wingnut.

I don't think these fuckers could pull it off, too incompetent and too many labrats in the know.

2) Not weaponized. if they were actually trying to kill someone, why not weaponize it? Unless you were someone who didn't know about that little detail?

Well, if it's any consolation, the investigation hasn't actually stopped.

And one of the benefits we'll get out of this is a complete sequencing of the anthrax genome.

BTW, one of the labs that matched was Portadown in UK.

Wasn't this about the time those five or six scientists died of curious circumstances? Or am I thinking of something else.

Unlike the New York Times and the WaPo, they don't hold stories because it might hurt the Bush junta's election chances.

GravatarWasn't this about the time those five or six scientists died of curious circumstances? Or am I thinking of something else.

You are correct. One had supposedly left his car in the middle of a bridge. One of them was a good friend of mine, killed with jogging or biking (I can't remember which) by a hit and run driver.

It's the National Inquirer.. that's eight up there with batboy. A winger might object, but I doubt the administration would. It's actually a point against the admin being actively (as opposed to the usual incompetence) involved.

GravatarOf course it's not. It's Turdblossom's M.O. from way back.

Damn. I hadn't heard about that before. Just when you think you've figured out how shitty Rove is, you discover he's taken another dump.

GravatarGeorge Bush was castigated by European diplomats and found himself isolated yesterday after a special conference on climate change ended without any progress.

European ministers, diplomats and officials attending the Washington conference were scathing, particularly in private, over Mr Bush's failure once again to commit to binding action on climate change.

"It was a total charade and has been exposed as a charade," the diplomat said. "I have never heard a more humiliating speech by a major leader. He [Mr Bush] was trying to present himself as a leader while showing no sign of leadership. It was a total failure."

No worries, Res. I was not holding a grudge. You and I have bben on the same side of many more issues than we have been opposed on. I really do appreciate your graciousness in apologizing, though.

I was not exactly on my best behavior either -- this housing market thing and its attendant frustrations are a touchy subject for me. If it were not for the double whammy of my being in graduate school for 5 years and the unfortunate happenstance of my wife and I having to spend upwards of $60,000 on fertility issues, we would have gotten in ahead of the insanity, and would now be looking at the issue from the other side of the fence, like most of our friends. Who knows, in that reality, I may have sided with you from the first. Anyway, I'm glad that there are no lingering hard feelings on your side.

Not true. I've gotten multiple responses to my snail mail from my rep. And if you consider sending mail as a tangible protest that, if done massively, can cause administrative slowdown, it can provide more psychological pressure.

Gravatarleft Fort Detrick in December 1991, after a controversy over allegations of unprofessional behavior by Zack, Rippy, Brown and others who worked in the pathology division. They had formed a clique that was accused of harassing the Egyptian-born Assaad, who later sued the Army, claiming discrimination.

Assaad said he had believed the harassment was behind him until last October, until after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

He said that is when the FBI contacted him, saying someone had mailed an anonymous letter - a few days before the existence of anthrax-laced mail became known - naming Assaad as a potential bioterrorist. FBI agents decided the note was a hoax after interviewing Assaad.

But Assaad said he believes the note's timing makes the author a suspect in the anthrax attacks, and he is convinced that details of his work contained in the letter mean the author must be a former Fort Detrick colleague.

GravatarLeading Indicators Point Down for GOP
By DAVID ESPO, AP Saturday, September 29, 2007
(09-29) 12:12 PDT WASHINGTON, (AP)
It is gallows humor time for Republicans in Congress, where one lawmaker jokes that "there's talk about us going the way of the Whigs," the 19th century political party long extinct

"That's not going to happen," Rep. Tom Davis, R-Va., hastens to add, although a little more than a year before the 2008 election, the major leading political indicators still point downward for a party abruptly turned out of power in 2006.

Fundraising for Republican campaign organizations lags. That is strikingly so in the House, where the party committee spent more than it raised in each of the past two months, reported only $1.6 million in the bank at the end of August and a debt of nearly $4 million.

GravatarI really and truly do hate it when I am right. The Republicans WANT to run against Hillary and then they will run against the policies of the Bush Administration.

Hell, I have been saying that for a year or more now. The two are coming together. The first piece has been solidified in the last two weeks with the media's acceptance of the inevitability of HRC's nomination. Here is the second piece, right on cue.

Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee ripped the Bush administration's war against terrorism Friday, delivering a bold and potentially risky speech that could establish the former Arkansas governor as the maverick among top Republican candidates and test his party's loyalty to President Bush . . . .

and mcclatchy has been on fire of late, and not exactly cheerleading for the bushies. there are ways to find out about stories without going to the official press in the area. if i trust anyone to do, what's that called again, i forget? oh, yeah, "investigative journalism" it's mcclatchy's crew. the nice thing about web journalism is that there are so many ways to get your story quickly seen by many, and thus it becomes that much harder to "take out."

GravatarHoward Hunt was a spook.

Good point.

OK, I doubt that they are that stupid *in the aggregate*

GravatarWho were those two old brothers in NY who lived in a huge apartment with giant balls of string and had made several rooms into mazes with stacks of old newspapers?

GravatarI know the admin are dumb, but I doubt the spooks are that stupid.

Remember Deep Throat in "All The President's Men:"

"This are not bright guys. And things got out of hand."

Gravatarsomething's going on here.

yeah, they are still bestest buds with the drug lords so they can finance black ops with no supervision.

that's not news.

GravatarIran's parliament has approved a nonbinding resolution to label the CIA and the US army as "terrorist organisations".

The move is seen as a diplomatic tit-for-tat after the US senate also voted in favour of a motion urging the state department to designate Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps a "terrorist organisation."

The signing of the resolution by 215 politicians at an open session of the Iranian parliament was broadcast live on television on Saturday.

The statement said: "The aggressor US army and the Central Intelligence Agency are terrorists and also nurture terror."

GravatarI think I may be a long lost Collier.

When we were growing up, if the joint was a mess, my mother would say, "What is this? Collier's mansion?"

She'd also say (when we left the door open), "Where do you think you live? The Coliseum?"

That gets my vote. I was home and had a couple glasses of wine most of which wound up on the monitor.

For the Jimmy/Jeff I was attached to the borg and could only dip in every now and again.

GravatarAmazing that events from, oh, say, the Cuban Revolution onwards are more or less down the memory hole. You know, JFK, MLK, RFK, Allende and so on.
