Spanish banking giant Santander is in high-stakes talks with the government over a last-minute rescue deal to take over Bradford and Bingley and avert a Northern Rock-style run on the bank.
As fears mounted this weekend over the future of the former building society, savers were withdrawing funds online and a steady stream had arrived at its 337 branches across the country asking to withdraw their money.
Officials from the Treasury and the Financial Services Authority were locked in talks with Santander today as they tried to broker a solution that would avoid another nationalisation. Santander already owns the Abbey and is negotiating to take over Alliance and Leicester

OT: BASRA, Sept. 23, 2008 (Aswat al-Iraq) – Iraqi legislators and ecologists have warned against possible environment pollution to sweep the southern Iraq city of Basra, calling on the government to find quick solutions.
"Basra, which has turned into a dump for refuse thrown in the rivers Tigris and Euphrates, is facing a serious environmental problem. We have fears about an environmental disaster in the city," independent lawmaker Wael Abdellatif told Aswat al-Iraq.
Abdellatif, a former governor of Basra, Iraq's only outlet to the sea, pointed out that saltiness rates in the terrain grew high due to the low water level in Tigris and Euphrates. "Germs rates also increased as a result of the disposal of industry wastes into the two rivers, in addition to the passage of oil pipelines via Shatt al-Arab, whose fish wealth is endangered," he explained.
Shatt al-Arab is a river channel, about 193 km (120 mi) long, of southeast Iraq formed by the confluence of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers and flowing southeast to the Gulf. The Shatt al Arab forms part of the Iraq-Iran border, and navigation rights to the channel have long been disputed by the two countries.
Abdelhadi al-Hassani, a member of the parliament's oil & gas committee, termed as "moribund" Basra, the cradle of the first civilization of Sumer.
"It's all because of this deliberate negligence by the government during the past period," he complained, noting Basra was polluted by the landfill of oil refinery wastes, which might cause cancer.

is this the success in Iraq McCain talks about? - BAGHDAD, Sep 25, 2008 (IPS) - Not even the elevators work now at Baghdad Medical City, built once as the centre for some of the best medical care.
One of the ten elevators still does, and the priority for this is patients who have lost their legs -- and there are many of them. The rest, the doctors, patients and students at the four specialised teaching hospitals within the building complex, just take the stairs, sometimes to the 18th floor.
This is in a city that had been given dreams of great development five years back, around the time of the U.S.-led invasion. And much of the corporate-led media in the U.S. and Europe still insists that the situation in Baghdad has "improved".
The improvement that such media sees, no one in Iraq does. As with Baghdad Medical City, so with Baghdad, and so with Iraq. The elevators are just another reminder of a country that's not working.
"It's so bad here that patients who are moderate cases don't come for treatment at all," says Abdul Razak, an elevator serviceman at the complex. "They just send a family member to describe their condition and collect medicine."
It's a hard day's work for Razak when he is operating the elevator. "The smell of my sweat mixes with the smell of at least 20 other people who crowd into the lift." It gets less sweaty to the extent there are more wheelchairs.

The Americans are determined to establish at least two nuclear sites in Imam Ali Base - Nasriyah and Al-Bakir - west Iraq, contain long-and-medium range missiles which are probably will target Russia and regional countries.

At least 17 people have been killed and at least 14 injured in a car bomb attack in the Syrian capital Damascus.
The car bomb, which Syrian public television said contained about 200kg of explosives, went off in a southern suburb of the capital at about 8am [0500 GMT] on Saturday.
All of the victims are believed to be civilians.
The bombing occurred at an intersection leading to Saydah Zeinab, a holy shrine for Shia Muslims that is visited by Iranian and Iraqi pilgrims.
The blast site is close to a security post in the Sidi Qada district near the airport road, Abdul Hameed Tawfiq, Al Jazeera's correspondent in Damascus, reported.

Agreed, the best option is for both Rethugs and Dems to vote it down.
Politically the Dems have to be careful here, if they vote no and the repubs vote yes, and it doesn't pass and the dow tanks and loads of big banks go under then the dems are blamed.
This is just not popular with anybody, except the ones that have personal stake in the market, with their 401K plans and jobs tied into the financial sector.
Locally here our smaller banks never got tied into the sub-prime mess and they will do just fine. They are still giving out auto and college loans.

Interesting take on McCain: As a psychotherapist and someone who treats people with anger management problems, we typically try to educate people that anger is often an emotion that masks other emotions. I think it's significant that McCain didn't make much, if any, eye contact because it suggests one of two things to me; he doesn't want to make eye contact because he is prone to losing control of his emotions if he deals directly with the other person, or, his anger masks fear and the eye contact may increase or substantiate the fear.
I noticed him doing the same thing in the Republican primary debates. The perception observers are likely to have is that he is unwilling to acknowledge the opponent's legitimacy and/or is contemptuous of the opponent.

Here's what I learned from my G/ma who raised kids during the First American Depresion:
We've had a very good run for the last couple weeks. We have a small ability to stash real cash and are starting to do so. If a depression does come, how will actual money fare in that kind of an environment? Would it be dangerous, or would it be like gold? Will cash be too deflated to use?

The Base will abandon him if she leaves
I think it will be more than just the psychos that abandon him. If Palin gets booted, he has to admit that he made a big mistake in choosing her, and that will weigh against him very negatively.
If she's retained, he can at least hope that enough people aren't paying attention to her for her to make a fatal difference to his election prospects.
Either way, though, he's gor a boat anchor around his neck.

This is really tough. Over the last several years I've noticed things about my trees and their fruit that co-relate with ripeness. First, -after- they finish being bright red and have become leathery and brownish? Ripe. Second, for me, they have been ripe in November - not ripe in October. Third, when they seem really, really heavy they're probably ripe. And when a very gentle tug takes them off the tree, they're pretty much ready. The key tho is waiting til after they pass that beautiful bright red phase.
The U.S. Mint is temporarily halting sales of its American Buffalo 24-karat gold coins because it can't keep up with soaring demand as investors seek the safety of gold amid economic turbulence. The 1-ounce coin has a face value of $50 but is priced for sale according to the fluctuating value of gold.

Okay. There are runs on banks, where you try to get your paper money out, and you're unlucky and they close the door in your face, so all you have is paper that says you have paper money there.
But say you manage to get your paper money out of the bank. But very soon your money doesn't have much money in it. How soon after only having paper that says you have paper money does your paper money not mean jack shit? Like in Zimbabwe, where if you go to a restaurant for a meal, you pay in advance, because otherwise it's doubled in price before you get dessert.
So, like, it's a downhill slide of epic proportions to have a run on the banks. Does having no money in your money only happen after yet another epic downhill slide? What materially changes? When does your mattress lose all its worth?
Don't bother. I'll figure it out or whatever.

Believe it or not, the European economy ain't so hot either and, while it has popped back up somewhat, the Euro is actually worth significantly less now than it was back in June (1.46 compared to 1.60). A lot of their big banks are in big big trouble too.

The neat thing about pomegranates is that their fertility is entirely governed by the amount of water they get. No water - no fruit. Some water - some fruit. Too much water - early ripening and then splitting and rotting. However, if they do split, go ahead and pick them. They're not going to do anything else.

Some banks sell them. Wells Fargo has international banking at many locations. Those sell the most common currencies and stock them. Many others can be ordered ahead of time. I think Bank of America does this too.

Keynes is a name that should not be forgotten in all this depression discussion. He points out that the way to get out of depression is by increasing public spending and that in general demand should be kept up. If we all stop consuming then the firms which sell things will fail sooner and things will get worse.

My accounts are with Chase Bank, part of the JP Morgan empire.
They'd be the last one standing in any total disaster, from the way things are looking now.

yes the company certainly has not indulged in as stupid decisions as the other big banks and combined with their political connections

Echidne thank you for the primer on statistics. That was really interesting.
I know a psychometrician who has been trying to explain the reasons that sampling works and your post made it much more clear.
I have the latest Mother Earth...for those of us who don't have a lot of room or soil, they suggest buying sacks of compost, poke holes in one side for drainage...flip it over, cut a rectangle in the other and then plant.
The pictures show that it really does work. I'm going to plant a fall garden
near the dog so the deer don't destroy it. Speaking of deer...the herd seems to be getting smaller here in the subdivision. I wonder if someone is making jerkey?

Let's say the economy tanks. Unemployment hits 20 - 30 percent. What happens to all the people who can't afford housing and lose their homes. Will they then be forced out of them? Will the law come and stick guns in our faces to evict? What happens to all those empty houses?

I have not heard of this. I learned many tricks when the husband was gambling and I thought he didn't make enough, and that helped me when the s*it hit the fan and he completely melted down, but I didn't know of this.

I had dermatitis on my scalp for a long time, and this was a big help to me. In the end, it also turned out to make my hair feel much nicer and softer for longer, so I stayed with it. And it's much cheaper too, of course.
Used to be my hair felt horrible if I didn't wash it for a day. Now, it's fine. I really recommend it.
We use apple cider vinegar, diluted by about 3/4ths.

Thru a series of unfortunate timing incidents, I had to buy all my various medications at once today, including the syringes. $135 -on- the insurance. Swell. It's the kind of thing that makes me eye Yahk....

There's something depressing about high school bands trying to play tunes that were popular songs when you were in high school.
I look forward to my grandchildren trying to play Dr. Dre and Puff Daddy tunes on brass instruments accompanied by drums.

This site has very depressing economic news frmo an experienced trader,
interesting consptheor, but it has always also had great money-saving advice. The guy who writes it saved up from IT, bought a no=tech farm in NZ, and now has the happiness of being completely in control of his life. He had a post up with bags of bulk grains comtrasting them to meaningless financial "products." He spoke to us about vinegar shampoo and baking soda toothpaste years ago (toothpaste is a nearly perfect waste of money).
You know I have 'plastic curtains' that they gave out during WWII for your silk ones. (My Grandmothers) I never thought we would be anywhere near this situation again.
WWII was different, but I'll be damned if as the economy goes to hell I will sacrifice to keep Bush's war going. Bring them home!

The thing is, if everything really does go south in terms of the economy, I think a whole lot more people will survive than the the powers-that-be anticipate. We really could start from scratch because we've been there.
They can't because they never have been and never dreamed they could be.

back when I used to make tofu I used the whey to wash my hair. It was pretty good if you rinsed it enough so you didn't smell like soy beans.

How do you buy Euros in the states?
Wells Fargo and Bank of America do this. Probably others too. Check their websites for international banking locations.

Rmj, I didn't mean to suggest it would be easy, nor would I denigrate the hell you've just been through.
But the fact that you did live through it, with your wisdom and good sense intact, seems to add credence to my theory.

How many people here have really "been there"?
Have you lived in impoverished circumstances?
My mother did as a child, and despite her stories of tough times, I would be a fool to say that I could really imagine what it would be like.

There was a group of angry, middle-class people actually protesting the fact they didn't have power back yet. I mean with signs and chants, like an anti-war rally.
And "hell" it wasn't, which is my point. It was chaos (every intersection a 4-way stop), it was hot, it was dark at night. In the '30's, that was the norm. Today?
Severe dislocations are easier and more damaging than we imagine, and more pernicious. I've had a taste of it, and surviving it will be no cakewalk for anyone.

We use apple cider vinegar, diluted by about 3/4ths.
The receipt that was used in my family:
Take one egg, add 1 teaspoon of olive oil and lemon juice, (or cider vinegar) mix in blender. Melt Castille soap in a double boiler. Add about a tablespoon or so to the mixture. Blend all the items in the blender until the mixture is combined well. Add a couple drops of lavender or rosemary oil to the blender to scent your shampoo- blend again until the scent is completely mixed with the shampoo. Pour the mixture into a clean bottle with a lid. Use before egg is rancid.

If you can in any way, shape or form scrape enough money together to go to the dentist, do it. Get as much work done as you need and can afford, then brush and floss and see the hygienist a couple times a year. If times get really bad and supply lines are totally disrupted, it'd be good to face it with as few outstanding problems as possible.
I know this is hard for a lot of people to manage, but I also know that there are a lot of folks who can get the money together but put off dental work because it's such a pain. Don't. Do it now.
Something I need to do is get back-up eyeglasses. I wear contact lenses, but my back-up glasses are old and beat-up and taped together. So tiresome in an emergency.
