Unsurprisingly, this is not something you will be hearing from reporters themselves.

GravatarI've long since given up expecting logic or honesty from any Gooper.

Dems just want to spend money? How come it was a Dem administration that balanced budgets and the last three Gooper administrations did not?

Last week my Republican neighbor who works for UBS thoughtfully sent me UBS's "election outcome analysis."

It was all about how the Democrats always raise taxes and raise the budget deficit. Not one word about the Republicans. The obvious message being: don't vote for the Democrats!!!

I e-mailed him back about the biased BS, and the next time he saw us he asked who we were supporting. I really think he assumed we were Republicans.

Amazing.

Obviously, the Repuke control of the media gives them a huge advantage. But the Democrats have problems of their own in delivering a counter-message. Look at how Hillary took after Obama on the SS cap issue - she reinforced Republican stories about huge tax burdens.

My original statement was that the Democrats have never seriously taken action to counter the branding of Republicans as frugal. The survival of this widespread belief automatically puts democrats at a disadvantage and it seems like it would be a good idea to figure out how to counter it.

GravatarActually, I don't think it's simple at all. That's why I'm currently supporting Obama.

GravatarCAMP ARIFJAN, Kuwait, Jan. 12 -- President Bush explored the possibility of further troop reductions in Iraq with his top commander on Saturday, but he announced no decisions while forecasting that the U.S. military presence there would outlast his presidency.

Bush offered an upbeat assessment of where Iraq stands a year after he sent reinforcements to stem spiraling violence, and he said the U.S. military is "on track" to achieve its plan of reducing troop strength there from 20 to 15 combat brigades by the middle of the summer. That would make for roughly 130,000 troops in all, about the same as when Bush announced the "surge" last January.

I want to thank these ladies from Kuwait for joining me and the Chargé. I'm really looking forward to the conversation. Laura had met with some before and came back very impressed by the spirit and desire of Kuwaiti women to be full participants in Kuwaiti society.

First, I'd like to thank His Highness for his hospitality. Secondly, last night in a conversation with His Highness I said, any regrets about having women vote in elections and run for elections? He said, absolutely not. He said, our society is enriched by the participation of our women. And he's right. All societies are enriched by the participation of women. I happen to believe very strongly in the freedom agenda and I think an integral part of that agenda is making sure that all participants in society have got an equal voice.

And one of the interesting -- I think when people look back at the history of the Middle East and history of the world it's going to be women who helped lead the freedom agenda. And it's happening right here in Kuwait. We've had people here at the table who ran for Kuwaiti parliament. Jenan ran, she said -- I told her the first race I ever ran, I lost -- (laughter) -- and she said, well, the first ran I ever ran I lost too. But she intends to win next time around.

GravatarI like two things about Obama: personal history and message smarts. For personal history, he was a community organizer and civil rights lawyer before going into politics. He's actually spent time working with people living in projects and seen voter suppression in action and chose to work as a progressive. And his team comes from Jesse Jackson's and Harold Washington's base. That's not a history matched by either of the other two and it gives me some hope he means what he says. For message smarts, I think he is trying with some success to craft a message that is appealing to a majority. To me, Hillary does the usual checklist - which gets about 50% of the voters, and Edwards does angry which gets about 20%. I'm sick of the democratic party being a party of middle class professionals and I don't see either of the others having any hope of changing that.

The Consumer Federation of America’s insurance director, J. Thank you, that is what I'm talking about. So it doesn't trouble you that a lot of Obama's successful branding strategy involves deliberately glossing over really crucial issues like gay rights with ambiguities that seem to give the bigots a pass? I mean, I guess I can see how that's a great strategy with the public, but it makes me pretty queasy. I see him as to the right of Hillary based on that.

GravatarAnd Dan Balz of the WaPo certainly doesn't want Edwards in the race.

blerb, born-again stoner | 01.12.08 - 10:34 am | #

No it does not trouble me at all. There are many "conservative" citizens who reflexively vote republican because of "guns, gays, God". Defusing that advertising slogan is good - as long as it is not accompanied by any actual concessions to bigots. The fact is that the thugs get a lot of support from blue collar people who should be voting Democrat, but have been scared away on "social" issues. I think Democratic "activists" are much too concerned about symbolics and too little concerned about money and power.

GravatarObama opposes a "precipitous withdrawal." Which is what Republicans always accuse the Dems of supporting, usually coupling it with terms like "cut and run."
What Obama supports is an orderly, phased withdrawal. A few months ago he was proposing withdrawing a brigade a month. Lately he's been saying all combat troops out within 18 months after he takes office.
That sounds pretty good to me. Obviously, we don't want to make this horrible fiasco even worse by the way we get out.
