Some more regulation is needed, no doubt, but keep in mind that some Democrats--particularly those from low-income, minority household--and African American leaders fought back at any regulation of the subprime markets because they felt it would unfairly punish minorities. And Rubin fought additional regulation when he was Treasury Secretary. I have no love for this Administration, but this is not a Republican mess--it is a DC mess that has been brewing for a long time.

I made a weekend trip to No. Az this weekend, and have discovered that there is an obvious split between the economy there (mostly non-existent) and So. Az, which by comparison, is still lively.
To me it seemed that some of the economic ills in No. Az are the same as small town America across the west. Just about any job that could be off-shored from there has been and they (small towns) are rotting on the vine. When I asked most people in those towns what was done there, what brought money in, I heard comments like: new wallmart in town, or tourism. Tourism might work for areas that are exceptionally attractive, but won't work in most of those places. A new corporate store only siphons money out of the local economy.

In an interview with Newsbusters, former Bush adviser Karl Rove claimed that the conservative blogosphere “has much better quality and quantity” than the progressive blogosphere. Calling left-leaning blogs “unpersuasive,” Rove said “they are, most of them are hate-filled, obscenity-clogged rants of anger and hatred.” Rove has made similar netroots bashing comments before, claiming in a speech last year that bloggers are “nutty,” “vitriolic,” and “kooks.”

Okay. We can do it. We know how. I'm going to tax you. Like Ike level taxed. You liked Ike, remember? He made stuff like the interstates. You like the 50's well here ya go. Oh, and we are going to just tax the rich ones. Class war. You lose. I'm a class traitor, sorry. You fraked up, you thought I'd side with the rich rather than the majority of good people in America. The rich will get over it, they always do. Maybe if you shoot me I'll keep FDR company.
Are you happy now crazy neo cons?
I gave you what you wanted now you get to call me a taxing liberal. I'll fix the economy and give everyone health care which will make the economy kick ass. Oh yeah, we never talk about how great the economy will be after universal health care. Think about all the people doing crappy jobs because they need the benefits. They will generate more new business than you can imagine. Except for the lazy corporate drones who will have to figure out a new way to lock people into their cubes.
You really are the smart ones, rich pundits, you got what you want someone to raise the taxes so you could bitch about it and still pretend you know something about economics.
Oh, one more thing. We aren't going to cut you any slack, you have benefited from the system so you need to pay back into the kitty. Quid pro Quo Clarice. Quid pro Quo. And if you don't, President ObamTon will seize your profiteering, unpatriotic assets.

Not if Mr. McCain makes it to the White House. His chief economic adviser is former Senator Phil Gramm, a fervent advocate of financial deregulation. In fact, I’d argue that aside from Alan Greenspan, nobody did as much as Mr. Gramm to make this crisis possible.

Sinfonian,
I have often given this bit of advice to my grown sons. Now I give it to you. You can choose your friends, you cannot choose your relatives. Whatever they may be, they are part of you.
If the things they do disappoint you, then tell them so but also tell them that it really doesn't matter because they are still part of you. And while you are at it explain that while you may disagree with them it is their responsibility to remember that you are part of them and your disagreement cannot and will not ever change that.
We are all growing and changing and learning. Some of us simply grown and change and learn at a much slower pace. Patience and kindness are usually better than vitriol and bombast. (Unless it is Hillary and Barack)

When Representative Charles E. Schumer was running for the Senate from New York last year, for example, he was probably aware when he spoke with securities industry lobbyists about deregulation that the industry had donated $1.28 million to his campaigns over the previous five years -- even if not all of those donations were motivated by concern about this issue.
Mr. Schumer was on the House Banking Committee and is now on the Senate Banking Committee. He has long been regarded as the securities industry's strongest ally in Congress. Of course, most brokerage and financial services companies are based in New York City, parts of which Mr. Schumer represented in the House. He received more money from the securities industry in 1997 and 1998 than anyone else now in the Senate, almost certainly because he was running for the Senate.

not that Krugman is unaware of the role Schumer plays here, but I guess giving kid glove treatment to your friends is what we can expect of Paul:
Allen Knutson, New York: It’s even more maddening when you consider that Sen. Schumer won his last race with 71 percent of the vote. I guess he’s using that mandate to take on unpopular positions, like protecting the outrageous profits of a very few people.
Paul Krugman: To be fair, I think Schumer is acting for his party, not himself — he’s unwilling to endanger funding for the 2008 races. But he’s missing the importance of standing up for principles.

Read your piece. Did you ever watch the Simpson's episode where Homer's life is saved by the gay man voiced by John Waters?
At the end Homer says something like, "Well now I accept you as a person."
And Waters says something like, "Now I only have to save the life of every gay hating bigot out there."
For a while I was running some Asian stereotypes in my mind based on an very bad experience. Someone pointed out to me how my other Asian experiences did NOT reinforce that view. Why did I count this and not that? This person also pointed out that the stereotype applied to some RICH people as much as anything to do with race or religion. That comment helped me see it all in a different light.
You have to wonder how many generous people your Mom knows who are Jewish? Does she need to see a Jewish community open up their home to her personally in her time of need to see them as non-stereotypical?

parsec,
The sweetened offer is intended to win over stockholders who vowed to fight the original fire-sale deal, struck only a week ago at the behest of the Federal Reserve and Treasury Department.
Under the terms being discussed, JPMorgan would pay $10 a share in stock for Bear, up from its initial offer of $2 a share — a figure that represented a mere one-fifteenth of Bear’s going market price.

Jesus walks into a Christian church in Colorado springs.
Buzz, buzz, buzz.
Whisper, whisper.
What do you think the buzz and whisper are?
"Who's the DFH? Don't know, he looks Jewish or Muslim. Probably from Berkeley, look at those sandals. What the heck is he wearing, a bedsheet?"
Someone comes up to him and says. "Can I help you?"
Jesus says, "No. But maybe I can help you. Get out your video recorders so that you get it right this time."

I was in Apache County because I was checking on a piece of property I inherited there. I had to see the county property registar to see where the heck it was so I could look at it. As I figured it's not worth much, though on the county map it shows as being adjacent to Highway 666. This makes sense, Uncle Harold would have bought it for that reason alone and would have willed it to me as a time-bomb joke, that I'd get sooner or later.

We should make all the guests at Eschaton pass a purity test.
you are missing the point. Krugman bemoans the ongoing financial meltdown, and yet curiously never mentions the Democratic Senator who helped engineer the worst excesses that led to this fiasco.
this isn'ty about purity, it's about accountability. Krugmna proclaimed in one column that any senator who votyed for the Bankruptcy Bill should be ashamed, and yet never mentioned the fact that it was Schumer who carried the water on the Democratic side. Krugman decries the fact that the repeal of Glass Steagall was instrumental in non-banking financial firms running namok, yet fails to mention it was Schumer who engineered that bit of shit.
so to call Phil Gramm the "most responsible" for our curent sticky wicket, and yet leave Schumer out of the picture is somewaht intellectually dishonest. somewhat.

Good timing - Greenwald has a link to a favorite blogger of Glenn Reynolds, who happens to sound like the craziest white racist since...wait, I can't remember who last sounded this insane. (And BTW, Greenwald says "Instapundit" is one of Rove's very favorite blogs. Yes. Indeedy!)
One of Instapundit's favorite blogs speaks on race
Money quote from Greenwald:
"There is no better phrase to describe the animating feature of the modern Limbaugh/Kristol/Fox News conservative faction than "threatened tribalism." The belief that they are good and pure, yet subjected to unprecedented systematic unfairness and threatened by some lurking Evil Other against whom war must be waged (the Muslim, the Immigrant, the Terrorist, the Communist, the Liberal, the Welfare Queen) is the centerpiece of their ugly worldview. "

Question re GSE's:
Is it correct for Krugman to lump the FHL Banks in with Fannie and Freddie? Aren't the Banks doing what they were created to do in 1932, which is to provide liquidity for housing finance in bad times and good? And haven't they, unlike Fannie and Freddie, been doing it in a safe and sound manner (thx to effective regulation)?

US Rte 666 used to run through southeastern Utah to the Four Corners region. They actually had to rename the road a few years ago for obvious reasons ... also, signs kept disappearing. I was on that road myself, back in 1985.

Krugman has the same problem that a lot of people have with Obama. The flash effect is kind of frightening. Is this man this good or is he just a conman with a really good line of patter?
I was of the first type for a long time. I have reluctantly joined the group for him now since Edwards dropped out. I really do not know if he is this good or not. I hope he is. He appears to be.
The chance that he is this bright, this much of a leader, and this able to reach people to unite in a common cause may be worth the chance.
Now, to bed. Night, 'bats

I remember hearing Tim Blake Nelson who played Delmar in "Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?" say what it was like growing up Jewish in a small town in the south where his family was the only Jewish family. Conan O'Brian asked him what that was like. He said it was fine after one of the elders told the others that his people were "the old timey people from the Bible."
I love that story. Especially when he told it in the old man's voice.
