GravatarSen. John McCain (R-AZ) is happy with the outcome. In a blogger conference call today, he said the results in Basra and southern Iraq were a “pleasant turn of events” in his view. Sadr, McCain says, is now marginalized. The bloggers reported on McCain’s responses:

Hot Air: It’s a “pleasant turn of events.” We’ve been pressing Maliki for action, and he persevered through some setbacks to success. Basra now is under Maliki’s control, and it has united the central government. Sadr is marginalized. “Overall, I’m rather pleased.”

Commentary: He described the outcome as a “pleasant turn of events” and said that Prime Minister Maliki “surprised us all.” McCain conceded that there were setbacks at first, but said that with limited American support the Iraqi army has wrested control of Basra from the Sadrites.

Sadr is dead! Long live Sadr!

Gravatarplay for the 3 run homer, bitches!

GravatarSo we spent the last two days at a pre-retirement seminar put on by my employer. It was actually pretty impressive; very well done & well thought out, not just about money but about first, envisioning what your retirement will look like, and then talking about all the 401k, etc., stuff to make that happen. It wasn't nearly as depressing as it sounds.

And the dear spouse came with me, which was excellent, and what was even more excellent was when we did the guided meditation, we both envisioned the same thing -- city apartment overlooking a park.

GravatarDragging up my profound comment from below:
ellroon: as bad as it is now, and it's bad, it's nothing, nothing whatever like the slaughter of the first world war.

It's too easy, with a volunteer army, 'only' 4000 or so American dead, and rigid control of information, to pretend there isn't a war on.
ProfWombat |

I know. The slaughter of men was beyond horrific.

Now we are just supposed to watch American Idol and go shopping. The volunteer army stupidly volunteered so they have to go and die.
ellroon bitterful

Gravataromg, sibelius.

it's been a long time

thanks echidne

GravatarOoh, I love Sibelius! I used to play oboe, and I've never heard this piece. Jesus, it's beautiful. I don't think I was ever that good.

Of course, I wasn't that good. We used to play "Finlandia" a lot, though.

I put Ralph Vaughn Williams in the same category in my feeble little mind; music that is very simple but hauntingly beautiful. His oboe concerto made me wish I'd never quit playing.

GravatarIt's a composer AND a governor of Kansas!

GravatarIt's still Friday here in the midwest, so I'll sneak in a catblogging pic.

Gravatari'm the king of nothing...

GravatarRalph Vaughan Williams = my musical hero

I have left instructions to have "Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis" played at my funeral. Doesn't have to be live; a recording will do.

GravatarAnd the dear spouse came with me, which was excellent, and what was even more excellent was when we did the guided meditation, we both envisioned the same thing -- city apartment overlooking a park.

That's really nice.

I received in the mail the other day a statement from the SSA telling me how much SS I would receive monthly if I worked to age X, Y or Z. If I'm lucky, I have a lot of years of work ahead of me.

GravatarHuggy Bear does not have clue one as to what is really going on in Iraq.

Which means he's perfectly positioned to continue the deserting coward's "plan" for that country.

GravatarEchidne,

I was save you the trouble. Here is the real meat of the long article, Yet, rather than being read as evidence of a Clinton strength, these results mostly have been interpreted as a worrying sign for Obama's ultimate general election chances.

For Obama, Bositis' analysis is both bad news and good news.

The bad news is that white women voters, who exercise outsized power in the primaries because of their relatively high turnout, continue to rally behind Clinton despite the long odds against her securing the nomination. They will likely continue to frustrate Obama's efforts to end the contest before the close of the primary season in June.

The good news for Obama is that his defeat in Pennsylvania, and his decisive loss among white voters Tuesday, may not indicate, as some observers and Clinton partisans have contended, a fatal weakness with white voters that could doom his chances against Arizona Sen. John McCain in November.

While the MSM has been content with the narrative that Barack Obama has a problem with white voter and Hillary has a problem with black voters the problem is actually much different.

Hillary is commanding incredible loyalty from white women. This is skewing the racial results to make it look like Barack is having trouble attracting white voters. Contrarily it is making it look Hillary is having trouble where she is not.

Interesting read.

Mine, too! We have two of his compositions in the "Oxford Easy Anthem Book" that we use in our church choir, and I'm dying to use them, because, well....

Now, the prounuciation: "ralf" or "rafe"?

My mother taught me the latter, but the local NPR station uses the former.

GravatarMuch to do tomorrow. May you all have DFH tonight (Dreams From Hecate).

GravatarI think a large part of white women's loyalty to Hillary Clinton is that they see the unrelenting barrage of sexist abuse heaped upon her at every turn, which reminds them of the unrelenting sniping of sexist abuse that they take every day as well. Many men, even well-intentioned men who love their mothers, wives, sisters, and daughters, just don't see it.

Shakespeare's Sister blog had a very good post earlier today about how that's like the Matrix. Once you see it, nothing's the same, but until you make an effort to see it you'll never notice it.

GravatarFor years, I had a CD of "Tallis" done by the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra under Slatkin. I damn near wore that thing out.

Then I moved to St. Louis. Then "Tallis" was on their season. And I went.

I wept openly. I believe it's the closest to the Divine I've ever been, hearing that in person in Powell Hall in St. Louis.

Gravatar"God damn America for voting in Bush for a 2nd term."

God knows he wasn't elected then either..

GravatarAh, to me, "Go figure" is an expression that means the idea expressed just before it is so obvious that it really needs no qualifier.

Looking at incredible wind and rain damage a man turns to another and says, Storm last night? The other man says, Go figure.

That sort of thing. Not meant to be insulting, just a statement of the obvious. Yes, women are supporting Hillary.

GravatarHillary is commanding incredible loyalty from white women. This is skewing the racial results to make it look like Barack is having trouble attracting white voters.

The question is what will these hard core Clinton supporters do in November?

How many usually vote Republican and will vote for McCain in the General once its a contest between two men? How many will be so disappointed when Obama wins that they stay home?

GravatarSinf: have you ever heard the Tallis Scholars sing Tallis? Cross state lines to do so if you have a chance; they're transcendent.

GravatarWatching Judith Jamison dance Alvin Ailey's 'Cry' did that to me. Couldn't speak for an hour. Don't get that way often.

GravatarProfWombat,

I just thought the article interesting because it brought up a POV I had not heard expressed before. The skewing of statistics because of the loyalty of one group.

And yes, I can believe that women perceive much of the press comments as being anti-women. I have worked in the black community for three decades. I perceive MUCH of what is passing for criticism - some of it from the Clinton Camp - of Obama as racism.

In the end you just do the best you can. I only brought the article to people's attention because I perceive it to be positive news. The news media is trying to bury the Dems again and what this article is saying is that Barack (still the likely nominee) really does not have nearly the problem with white people voting for him that is being reported. That, to me, is good news.

Night

GravatarHillary is commanding incredible loyalty from white women.

The Old Man From Scene 24

If the nominee is Barack Obama they will vote for him. I say that without qualification for the contrast between a Democratic progressive and four more years of Bush is an easy choice.

GravatarThe question is what will these hard core Clinton supporters do in November?

How many usually vote Republican and will vote for McCain in the General once its a contest between two men? How many will be so disappointed when Obama wins that they stay home?

They'll probably vote Democratic, as the vast majority of most Democrats, regardless of whether they are white women.

GravatarThis BSG episode contains an illustration of Chicago Dyke's complaint about the mindless, useless fumbing of Greek myth. Zeus's "rape," far from being shocking, was as vital an element of the Patriarchal redefinition of sex as a sphere of masculine domination as the rapes of pretty much every other man in Greek mythology, and it is certainly weird to hear criticism of it from Baltar's mouth.

GravatarWatching Judith Jamison dance Alvin Ailey's 'Cry' did that to me. Couldn't speak for an hour. Don't get that way often.

I came close to that after singing "Carmina Burana" a couple of weeks ago at the Knight Concert Hall in Miami.

Of course, as a first tenor, it shouldn't be surprising that I couldn't speak afterward. But it was an incredible experience. Nearly three thousand people fairly leapt to their feet as one to cheer as the last note faded away ... chills.

Gravatark&Y

Careful. You're coming mighty close to spoilers there.

GravatarCHICAGO, Illinois (AP) -- A tractor trailer that witnesses said didn't seem to slow down rammed into a crowded bus shelter and a Chicago Transit Authority rail station Friday during the evening rush hour, killing two people and injuring more than a dozen others.

Emergency personnel remove the wreckage of a tractor-trailer from the front of a Chicago rail station Friday.
"This is rush hour, so it's bad," Langford said.

Those killed, both women, were apparently walking near the Cermak-Chinatown Red Line station on the city's South Side, Fire Department spokeswoman Eve Rodriguez said. They were dead at the scene, she said.

Twenty-one people were transported to area hospitals, said fire department spokesman Larry Langford. Eleven were in critical condition, including four children, eight adults were in stable condition and two adults were in good condition.

Witnesses said the truck didn't appear to slow down before ramming into the station's stairwell

Every now and then we have to perform something "popular" ... keeps us in the black. But there's a reason "Carmina," the Mozart Requiem, the Brahms Requiem, Handel's Messiah, etc. are "popular."

GravatarHillary is commanding incredible loyalty from white women. This is skewing the racial results to make it look like Barack is having trouble attracting white voters.

Well I would hope that Democrats will vote for Obama in November, but much has been made recently of Clinton's popularity among so-called "Reagan Democrats" and the fierce loyalty she has among many women especially those of the baby boomer generation. I'm just wondering how many of those are "moderate" Republicans supporting Clinton because they want to see a woman in the White house.

(And please understand I'm not implying there's anything wrong with that, despite my problems with how she has run her campaign I think she is an extremely capable person and it seems reasonable to think that she would attract some non-crazy Republican women who want to see a woman in the Oval Office.)

Some old wardheeler turned pundit.

He's right. 'twas ever thus.

Unless something completely unexpected happens, Obama will be our candidate shortly.

Then will come the campaigning targeted at the GOP and McCain. Then will come the debates between Obama and McCain.

Every time the two meet, McCain will be eviscerated, and left at the podium, bruised and muttering.

If Obama can reduce him to one of his temper tantrum rages, so much the better.

Obama is not the President, yet.

But let us not concern ourselves too greatly about events today, tomorrow and the next day.

We have eternities of time left to us and to Obama, we can slip and stumble today and tomorrow and the next day and it will make no matter.

A week is an eternity and the voters have a short memory for such foolishness about flag pins and angry preachers.

angryspittle

IIRC, it's because there's always some lost energy in the transaction, and over time, the battery eventually dies, no matter what.

Gravatar"worse than Stockdale?"

Very likely. Remember, Stockdale was deaf as a post (that can really make you look and sound loopy at times. I speak from experience), and, frankly, really wasn't all that interested in being V.P., I suspect he was just doing Perot (was it?) a favor, knowing full well he was never going to be V.P.

My opinion of course, but as I recall, Stockdale didn't have nearly as many "senior moments" as has McCain.

Gravatarok, off to bed for me.

I've got 4 workers coming tomorrow to help me clear the jungle that is the south side of my property.

GravatarOh, Sinf, Elijah! I'd *love* to do Elijah. We don't do much Romantic music and it'd be *so* much fun to do some rip-roaring Romanticism.

The Creation is great fun -- we did that a few years back. Our conductor did that for his doctorate and the little "liner notes" he gave us during rehearsal were a riot. The first part represents primordial chaos, resolving to a big beautiful C Major chord -- and he tells the orchestra, okay, now I'm going to bring out the sun.

GravatarA perpetual motion machine?
angryspittle

yep, won't even happen with superconductors.

Gravatarangry: well, that's it. You generate a certain amount of energy that's needed to move the car forward. The trick is to waste as little of it as possible in radiated heat. And every time you change the energy's form--chemical to mechanical to electrical and so on--you have to lose some of it. First and second laws of thermodynamics. So, let's say you use a gas engine to turn a generator that makes electricity that powers an electric motor. It isn't necessarily a net gain over a direct drive.

Gravatar"Since cars have alternators the keep the battery charged while driving,
how come we haven't figured out a way to run an electric car that
charges its own batteries as it runs? A perpetual motion machine?
"

The immutable laws of Thermodynamics prevent that.

In the words of that noted Engineer, "Ye canna change the laws a' physics!"

GravatarI am clueless. Is that how hybrids work? Does the gas engine recharge the batteries as it runs?

Gravatarand he tells the orchestra, okay, now I'm going to bring out the sun.
