Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) is happy with the outcome. In a blogger conference call today, he said the results in Basra and southern Iraq were a “pleasant turn of events” in his view. Sadr, McCain says, is now marginalized. The bloggers reported on McCain’s responses:
Hot Air: It’s a “pleasant turn of events.” We’ve been pressing Maliki for action, and he persevered through some setbacks to success. Basra now is under Maliki’s control, and it has united the central government. Sadr is marginalized. “Overall, I’m rather pleased.”
Commentary: He described the outcome as a “pleasant turn of events” and said that Prime Minister Maliki “surprised us all.” McCain conceded that there were setbacks at first, but said that with limited American support the Iraqi army has wrested control of Basra from the Sadrites.

So we spent the last two days at a pre-retirement seminar put on by my employer. It was actually pretty impressive; very well done & well thought out, not just about money but about first, envisioning what your retirement will look like, and then talking about all the 401k, etc., stuff to make that happen. It wasn't nearly as depressing as it sounds.
And the dear spouse came with me, which was excellent, and what was even more excellent was when we did the guided meditation, we both envisioned the same thing -- city apartment overlooking a park.
Dragging up my profound comment from below:
ellroon: as bad as it is now, and it's bad, it's nothing, nothing whatever like the slaughter of the first world war.
It's too easy, with a volunteer army, 'only' 4000 or so American dead, and rigid control of information, to pretend there isn't a war on.

Of course, I wasn't that good. We used to play "Finlandia" a lot, though.
I put Ralph Vaughn Williams in the same category in my feeble little mind; music that is very simple but hauntingly beautiful. His oboe concerto made me wish I'd never quit playing.

Echidne,
I was save you the trouble. Here is the real meat of the long article, Yet, rather than being read as evidence of a Clinton strength, these results mostly have been interpreted as a worrying sign for Obama's ultimate general election chances.
For Obama, Bositis' analysis is both bad news and good news.
The bad news is that white women voters, who exercise outsized power in the primaries because of their relatively high turnout, continue to rally behind Clinton despite the long odds against her securing the nomination. They will likely continue to frustrate Obama's efforts to end the contest before the close of the primary season in June.
The good news for Obama is that his defeat in Pennsylvania, and his decisive loss among white voters Tuesday, may not indicate, as some observers and Clinton partisans have contended, a fatal weakness with white voters that could doom his chances against Arizona Sen. John McCain in November.
While the MSM has been content with the narrative that Barack Obama has a problem with white voter and Hillary has a problem with black voters the problem is actually much different.
Hillary is commanding incredible loyalty from white women. This is skewing the racial results to make it look like Barack is having trouble attracting white voters. Contrarily it is making it look Hillary is having trouble where she is not.

I think a large part of white women's loyalty to Hillary Clinton is that they see the unrelenting barrage of sexist abuse heaped upon her at every turn, which reminds them of the unrelenting sniping of sexist abuse that they take every day as well. Many men, even well-intentioned men who love their mothers, wives, sisters, and daughters, just don't see it.
Shakespeare's Sister blog had a very good post earlier today about how that's like the Matrix. Once you see it, nothing's the same, but until you make an effort to see it you'll never notice it.
For years, I had a CD of "Tallis" done by the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra under Slatkin. I damn near wore that thing out.
Then I moved to St. Louis. Then "Tallis" was on their season. And I went.

ProfWombat,
I just thought the article interesting because it brought up a POV I had not heard expressed before. The skewing of statistics because of the loyalty of one group.
And yes, I can believe that women perceive much of the press comments as being anti-women. I have worked in the black community for three decades. I perceive MUCH of what is passing for criticism - some of it from the Clinton Camp - of Obama as racism.
In the end you just do the best you can. I only brought the article to people's attention because I perceive it to be positive news. The news media is trying to bury the Dems again and what this article is saying is that Barack (still the likely nominee) really does not have nearly the problem with white people voting for him that is being reported. That, to me, is good news.
Hillary is commanding incredible loyalty from white women.
Well, so we've got that in common.

This BSG episode contains an illustration of Chicago Dyke's complaint about the mindless, useless fumbing of Greek myth. Zeus's "rape," far from being shocking, was as vital an element of the Patriarchal redefinition of sex as a sphere of masculine domination as the rapes of pretty much every other man in Greek mythology, and it is certainly weird to hear criticism of it from Baltar's mouth.

CHICAGO, Illinois (AP) -- A tractor trailer that witnesses said didn't seem to slow down rammed into a crowded bus shelter and a Chicago Transit Authority rail station Friday during the evening rush hour, killing two people and injuring more than a dozen others.
Emergency personnel remove the wreckage of a tractor-trailer from the front of a Chicago rail station Friday.
"This is rush hour, so it's bad," Langford said.
Those killed, both women, were apparently walking near the Cermak-Chinatown Red Line station on the city's South Side, Fire Department spokeswoman Eve Rodriguez said. They were dead at the scene, she said.
Twenty-one people were transported to area hospitals, said fire department spokesman Larry Langford. Eleven were in critical condition, including four children, eight adults were in stable condition and two adults were in good condition.
Witnesses said the truck didn't appear to slow down before ramming into the station's stairwell

Well I would hope that Democrats will vote for Obama in November, but much has been made recently of Clinton's popularity among so-called "Reagan Democrats" and the fierce loyalty she has among many women especially those of the baby boomer generation. I'm just wondering how many of those are "moderate" Republicans supporting Clinton because they want to see a woman in the White house.
(And please understand I'm not implying there's anything wrong with that, despite my problems with how she has run her campaign I think she is an extremely capable person and it seems reasonable to think that she would attract some non-crazy Republican women who want to see a woman in the Oval Office.)

We're singing two Tallis motets at Mass this Sunday, coincidentally. "If ye love me" is one of those transcendant pieces of music like we've been talking about.
We'll be doing Messiah again this winter, baroque pitch, and the plan is to have the whole thing, choruses too, from memory. No books. That will be *electric.*
We're doing Mendelssohn's "Elijah" in the fall ... then a holiday concert with the Empire Brass in December.
Spring is still up in the air a bit, but we want to do an American thing, or maybe something commemorating the Haydn bicentennial. I've heard Bernstein's "Chichester Psalms" come up in discussion ...

Very likely. Remember, Stockdale was deaf as a post (that can really make you look and sound loopy at times. I speak from experience), and, frankly, really wasn't all that interested in being V.P., I suspect he was just doing Perot (was it?) a favor, knowing full well he was never going to be V.P.
My opinion of course, but as I recall, Stockdale didn't have nearly as many "senior moments" as has McCain.

Oh, Sinf, Elijah! I'd *love* to do Elijah. We don't do much Romantic music and it'd be *so* much fun to do some rip-roaring Romanticism.
The Creation is great fun -- we did that a few years back. Our conductor did that for his doctorate and the little "liner notes" he gave us during rehearsal were a riot. The first part represents primordial chaos, resolving to a big beautiful C Major chord -- and he tells the orchestra, okay, now I'm going to bring out the sun.
yep, won't even happen with superconductors.

angry: well, that's it. You generate a certain amount of energy that's needed to move the car forward. The trick is to waste as little of it as possible in radiated heat. And every time you change the energy's form--chemical to mechanical to electrical and so on--you have to lose some of it. First and second laws of thermodynamics. So, let's say you use a gas engine to turn a generator that makes electricity that powers an electric motor. It isn't necessarily a net gain over a direct drive.

Is that how hybrids work? Does the gas engine recharge the batteries as it runs?
they use "regenerative braking" where instead of (or in addition to) regular brakes, the car is slowed by the electric motors basically working in reverse (becoming generators) which charges the batteries.
I'm sure there's plenty of other clever tricks they also use in the various models, but getting energy back in that way instead of just wasting it as heat is a big part of it.

"I don't understand how they recapture energy when braking."
There is, essentially, no difference between an electric motor and a electric generator. They both use the same principles.
When current is applied to the motor, it spins, driving the wheels, when you brake, the motor is not getting any current from the batteries. However, as it spins, it's now generating electricity and that is being routed to the batteries.
As a plus, there is some physical resistance in the whole generation business and that helps slow the car and saves wear and tear on the brake pads.
I am clueless.

I always thought it a pity stirlings don't work well without big differences in temp on the hot and cold side. My bright idea was pumping the heat out of server farms into stirling engines. If you could recover 5% of the energy you could cut electricity bills hundreds of thousand per month per facility for large farms.

Listen folks, Amanda is probably feeling bummed out tonight, seeing as all of the feminist haters she has created and encouraged over the years have turned on Amanda for the blatantly racist imagery in her new "book".
So let's be nice to her. Whatever you do, don't mention all the people, left, libertarian, conservative, gay, straight, transgendered, of color that have complained of her bullying and lies and smears.
Why don't you go over to her site and let her know she has your support, because we all know a core principle of liberalism is to protect our racist and sexist friends from criticism.
But it's also nice to see that the hate she has encouraged has come back to aim it self at her.

Barack Obama AND Hillary Clinton have been truly shitty candidates.
Examining their records, neither has demonstrated any leadership. Both have run very conservative campaigns.
One got a lot of press because he is black. The other because she has a vagina.
Obama is very close to Joe. And Obama's committee never met once.
If these people were white males, you would be complaining about how close both are to lobbyists, to corporations, and you would be seeking a Democrat from the Democratic wing of the Democratic Party.
So cut the crap and get rid of your mancrush.

Not just the pledged delegates, the popular vote, the number of states won, but the money factor is going to make her campaign even more desperate.
She's rolling the dice completely toward a superdelegate end run.

I hate to break the news to you, but the race for pledged delegates ended awhile ago. Neither candidate can win with pledged delegates.
Both candidates are aiming for a superdelegate finish, they have to, and they are following the rules.
I know you don't know the rules, or hate the rules, but the Democrats in the case of a tie like this, have a group of people they use to break that tie. These people can use astrology, or patterns in delegates, states, or popular votes, or anything they want to to pick who they feel the best candidate is.
Chances are your candidate sucks.
Why do you think I'm not an actual liberal? Depends on if you mean dipshitted, kool-aid drinking, fucktard that likes to bully others. Nope, I'm not that kind of liberal, that's the douchebags in this forum and over at the Big Orange.
But if by a "Liberal" you mean someone who looks ahead and not behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the people -- their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights, and their civil liberties -- someone who believes we can break through the stalemate and suspicions that grip us in our policies abroad, if that is what you mean by a "Liberal," then I'm proud to say I'm a "Liberal."
And you're a fucktard.

Lace-cap hydrangeas are also a hardy plant. Sadly our gardenia looks kinda sick this Spring. We've gotten used to having its offerings as part of our dinner table centerpiece, over the years.

four legs, have you a place for a pot or 3? That's almost all I have anymore, but I've had my sweet bay tree, a flowering maple, and some other plants for years now - even without a decent garden spot.
If I could grow a Meyer Lemon in a pot, I would!

oh, thanks, plantsman! Mr Deere claims to "hate" roses, but I think he just means the fussy ones. Anyroad, I do intend to have me one or two rugosas!

Gardenias are a treasure, and if you can grow one; count yourself blessed. Here, the small-flowered
( Kleim's Hardy ) hardy types are about all we can manage, and they often sulk terribly through the wet season.

plantsman, from the time I was 12 - 16, my family lived in Houston TX, and my mom grew gardenias. We pre- and post-pubescent little southern belles used to tuck a gardenia in our bras so we could smell the fragrance (and smell like the flower) all day

Y'know, the Obama campaign is nothing if not well organized. On the Scrabulous website, I see an ad reminding me of Oregon's Voter Registration deadline currently. Well done!

And Clinton's has been a multi-track trainwreck, yet she's ready on day one.

We had large-flowered gardenias in the NC town of my birth. We also had a Vicks Menthol-Lyptus flavored cough-drop factory. The two scents do not combine nicely, I'm sad to say.

"Looking at it as coldly as I can, I just don't see how Senator Clinton can overcome Senator Obama with delegates and popular votes. I want this fight to be over, the quicker the better."
Cold, hell, that's the only rational way to look at it.

Helicopters searching for signs of the shark that killed triathlete David Martin will continue scanning the coastline Saturday from the city of San Diego to Carlsbad, said Solana Beach Lifeguard Capt. Craig Miller.
The beaches remain closed and will be patrolled throughout the weekend, according to city and county officials.
Martin, 66, died on the beach Friday morning after a shark, presumed to be a great white, lifted him out of the water with his legs in its jaws, leaving deep lacerations and shredding Martin's black wetsuit.

How, I wonder if the Coast Guard helis spot a shark. are they supposed to determine if it's THE shark?
Will it be wearing a sandwich board saying, "I chopped the tourist?"

Fellows, let's be reasonable, huh? This is not the time or the place to perform some kind of a half-assed autopsy on a fish... And I'm not going to stand here and see that thing cut open and see that little Kintner boy spill out all over the dock.

I finally found a video of McCain's stripper girlfriend from his Navy days. Cherry Night also stripped under the name the Florida Flame. I hope this comes up in the debates - or maybe the NC Dem party can run an ad?
I don't care who John McCain watched strip; I care that he didn't give a damn for the victims of Katrina, let W give him a birthday cake rather than high tail it to New Orleans during the disaster, and lied about his votes against giving Katrina victims aid.
