DEATH be not proud, though some have called thee
Mighty and dreadfull, for, thou art not so,
For, those, whom thou think'st, thou dost overthrow,
Die not, poore death, nor yet canst thou kill me.
From rest and sleepe, which but thy pictures bee,
Much pleasure, then from thee, much more must flow,
And soonest our best men with thee doe goe,
Rest of their bones, and soules deliverie.
Thou art slave to Fate, Chance, kings, and desperate men,
And dost with poyson, warre, and sicknesse dwell,
And poppie, or charmes can make us sleepe as well,
And better then thy stroake; why swell'st thou then;
One short sleepe past, wee wake eternally,
And death shall be no more; death, thou shalt die.
Best I can do.

Well, let's see: never got beyond the planning stages, and the FBI seems to have known about it almost from the beginning, and there was never any risk it would come to anything.

I like the idea of remembering Steve by sharing poems. Here's one...
In Remembrance
Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glint on snow,
I am the sunlight on ripened grain,
I am the gentle morning rain.
And when you wake in the morning's hush,
I am the sweet uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night,
Do not stand at my grave and cry.
I am not there, I did not die.
This sounds like something I can promote at Eschacon II. Don't give away what we can sell tickets to, girls!

That settles it! No more loose talk of restoring habeas corpus! The last thing we need to do at this juncture is tie the hands of our superhero War Criminal-in-Chief and his Attorney Genicle-- so named because he's the Commander's left ball!

Why do these arrests always require "plots". Christ, a fucked up student at VA Tech with two handguns was able to murder 32 people. What kind of plotting does that require?
I think 32 dead Americans killed by a terrorist(s) would be adequate to get the MSM and the Nation to go beserk.
If one or more terrorists who are willing to die want to kill Americans it can be done at will.

I hope someone's gonna publish a collection of Gilliard's writing. I used to bring it up in comments occassionally. I also told him if he didn't want his "political" writings published, maybe he could do a book on food. He's too good a writer to just have his stuff disappear into the ether.

I went to the NewsBlog looking for the latest and found it draped in virtual black bunting - it felt like a kick in the stomach.
This sucks, and I can't add much to what was said upstream, except that I read Steve daily from NetSlaves days, and always enjoyed reading him - even when I didn't agree with him.
Also: He was younger than I, so that's a little freaky.
Just doesn't seem fair at all.

We have all been saved again. Another deadly terror plot has been uncovered in its early stages, with plotters planning to blow up airliners/JFK/The NY Subway/Sears Tower (delete as appropriate). Doubtless Khalid Sheikh Mohammed confessed to it already.
Tell you what, you all run around being terrified, I need an afternoon nap. Maybe I'll wake up to find we've invaded another country, or at the very least introduced the State of Emergency in the UK which Blair and Reid have been asking for.
I hope someone's gonna publish a collection of Gilliard's writing.
He'd talked about doing something at some point. I just hope that his family don't object to the archives staying up, because they deserve to stay around.
Gilliard's big argument about blogging was the need to create structures to support people who had a voice and a purpose. That was something he brought to the table from NetSlaves and his experience of the whole Silicon Alley bullshit of the late boom.
It might be presumptuous to talk of such things, but I'd like to see a Steve Gilliard Fellowship that puts a laptop and scratch money in the hands of someone who'd not be writing otherwise.

Steve was pretentious, at times infuriating, and alternately either completely aware of what he was doing and at other times completely lacking in self-awareness. Some days, he was right on. Other days, I found his opinions (usually when he strayed from politics) the result of brashness than thoughtfulness.
At the same time, his blog was, 11 months out of 12, required reading and one of the few tier-one political blogger that wasn't using his blog as a vehicle for self-promotion. He actively avoided trying to make himself famous and instead focused on cultivating his audience of readers. He was a good guy who left before his time.
Jen sounds like she had a hard time dealing with his family when it came to visiting him at the hospital and giving updates about his condition to his readers.

I had to meet with a Mr. Maus at work this week, and when I greeted him I pronounced it "mouse" in approved German II-class tones.
He pleasantly replied, "It's 'moss', but I'll answer to anything."
And I left it alone, suppressing the childish smarty-pants Master Know-It-All impulse to remark, "But you do know that your surname is German for 'mouse', don't you? And people must often pronounce it 'mouse', right?"
It's so hard to swallow even ephemeral, microscopic doses of one-downness at times.

Director Ben Whalley travels to New York for the closing of the club CBGB, first opened in 1973 and to find out how punk, disco and hip hop all emerged in 1970s New York.
During the 70s a new wave of punk rock evolved in lower Manhattan including The New York Dolls, The Ramones and the Patti Smith Group. While downtown loft parties spawned the birth of disco, Bronx DJs such as Kool Herc, Grandmaster Flash and Afrika Bambaataa created their own block parties, heralding the birth of hip hop.

In interviews, people who have spoken with Mr. Cheney's staff have confirmed the broad outlines of the reports, and said that some of the hawkish statements to outsiders had been made by David Wurmser, a former Pentagon official who is now the principal deputy assistant to Mr. Cheney for national security affairs. The accounts were provided by people who expressed alarm about the statements, but refused to be quoted by name.

I'm sure Googling will turn up a treasure trove of information on the subject, but off the top of my head I believe that 4:00AM is traditionally considered "The Hour of the Wolf", because supposedly many people die during that hour.
I don't know if this is a traditional notion, or something modern derived from actual data (e.g. hospital records, police reports). Isn't it more or less the hour that is "darkest before the dawn?"

Somehow this thing just smells funny.
People caught on to the authoritarian "alert colors" and tired of that. People caught on to 9/11 being an inside job and the republicans lost their ass on that. The most truly terrifying aspect of the synthetic terror industry underpinning our New Economy is that in order to convince everyone to hand over their Constitution, taxes and firstborn child to maintain the sweet, sweet profit/control nexus they've got going here, the real terrorists have to sustain the level, but human beings adjust and adapt to anything in an amazingly resilient way, so the terror industrial complex, like the oil/war paradigm, has to keep ratcheting and dramatizing to maintain the consensus opinion that we "need" ever-higher and, naturally, more intrusive levels of "protecting. It's a protection racket, and this JFK thing may very well have been legit, which highlights another aspect of the gambit: the meme automatically generates a bunch of copycats and wannabees on their own, so its all a zero-sum game no matter how you look at it, except of course, for the profiteers. They're loving it.

It sure took Kevin Drum a while to "catch on", if he ever did; I well remember being astonished at his suggestion that it was a good idea in its way, provided it was administered responsibly.
It's so hard to decide just how bamboozled We the People remain-- whether the effects of the 9/11 Ultra-Xenophobic Fear & Loathing Hysteria virus ever wear off. As preposterous and gimmicked-up as these public terrorism busts invariably prove to be, I'm not sure that they still don't reinforce idiotic submission to authority and law enforcement to protect Us from Them.
It seems certain that many ordinary citizens engage in routine doublethink, simultaneously accepting that we have to be Over There so They Don't Come Over Here, but also believing that They are coming over here in any case, which somehow proves the point and justifies the status quo.
I guess this is why it's said that Fear is the mind-killer.

"History teaches us that the advancement of weapons technology, rather than eliminating warfare - only escalates it. In an era of missiles and nuclear weapons, war has begun to threaten the existence of the entire global community. Such an eventuality can only be avoided by relying on reason and the cooperation of all human beings. At such a time, it would be better to reduce the number of spears rather than increase the number of shields; it is better to stop war than prepare for it; and it is better to seek collective rather than individual security." Yes, this bit of wisdom is buried in a rather pointed screed against the US hypocrisy on the issue, and, yes, the editorial for the most part is laced with anti-American venom, but the point is well-taken and well-expressed. -Cabdrollery
Yes and No. "Collective rather than individual security" writ large or small is the essence of the totalitarian globalist appeal. Life is not safe, and They who would trade etc. Entirely buying into the notion of security uber alles is part of an old, old agenda: http://www.CuttingThroughTheMatrix.net
Decentralized individual rights are what the American way has traditionally been about. We dirty fucking hippies and the genuine actual conservatives as opposed to the Thompson twins are a whole heck of alot closer on this than the media has or will ever let on.

Too much death. I'm almost afraid turn on the computer or T.V. any more. I'm just sick of it.
We're living in ugly times. There's something in the air; everyone I know is in a funk.
In a sop to the liberals, and NBC employee, Larry O'Donnell (producer of the West Wing) got an MSNBC show. It seems he got the Good Doctor Savage's spot. Anyway, he had a bunch of people on, including Penn Jillette... some California consultant named Flavia, Coulter and someone I forget.
At one point in the discussion, Coulter describes a Howard Dean rally as "like Nuremberg". No one, not O'Donnell, not this Flavia chick, no one challenged her.
That made me stop (what I was doing). I mean, that's crazy talk. And Larry and crew let it pass. Which is what they always do with crazy Annie. She's sitting in a East Hampton house, proof she has friends, of some sort, Crazy Annie says crazy shit and people either ignore it or get steamrolled.
What someone needs to do next time is this:
What? Did you just compare a gathering of Americans to a rally of Nazis? Let me understand you here, are you comparing Howard Dean and his supporters to the Nazi Party. The Nazi Party who murdered men, women and children? I want to know something, Ann. You went to Cornell, you have a law degree. Are words so cheap to you, so meaningless, you would defame Americans who are execising their civil duty to be involved in politics? You owe those people an apology. What you said was not only unfair, but completely uncalled for. Just like Joe Conason has no right to get into your sex life, you have no right to defame people who disagree with you with such savage, unfair language.
Larry should have cut off her mike for that. You wouldn't compare a Bush rally to a skinhead meeting, not even as a joke. As long as everyone treats her words as some sort of political freak show, she'll get away with this crap. Someone is going to have to either walk out or cut off her mike to get her to move towards some semblence of civility.
But you have to remember, these folks drink with her, fuck her, socialize with her. They may play liberal or conservative on TV, but in the real world, Crazy Annie is a member of the club... You have to realize that even if they exchange harsh words for your amusement, when they leave, it's all drinks and jokes and maybe a little slap and tickle.
RIP Steve - he had the best grasp of military history - he saw the folly as well as the sorrow, especially of colonial wars. I'd kick for some memorial.

I'm familiar with the actual etymology, but for all that I never will understand why butterflies aren't instead called "flutter-bys".
This offends my sense of justice no end, comparable to my feeling for the abominable fluke that the mortal plague of "corporations" was released from the Pandora's Box of a clerk's hasty headnote in a SCOTUS decision. Thus was legal "personhood" conferred upon corporations, which proved to be an elixir far more potent than any steroid in promoting metastatic growth. And creating a sociotechnic predatory monster that devours and digests democratic capitalist nation-states.
Sometimes I have a little trouble with my sense of scale.

• The Unitard™ recently cheerfully expressed the wish or intention to keep Iraq garrisoned with US military forces for the next half-century, i.e. until further notice.
• Georgeann Geyer recently reports that "Friends of his [the Unitard™] from Texas were shocked recently to find him nearly wild-eyed, thumping himself on the chest three times while he repeated 'I am the president!' He also made it clear he was setting Iraq up so his successor could not get out of 'our country's destiny'."
• Not that it was exactly a secret, but just this week detailed images of the Amerikan mega-embassy fortress compound under construction in Baghdad were publicized.
Not to drift into unwelcome Woodyness, but this last item seriously calls into question the intent of our political elite to withdraw and truly diminish the Amerikan footprint in Iraq. The embassy is, I believe, exactly analogous to the Zionist practice in Israel of deliberately building homes, settlements, and communities on land upon which the occupants have no legal claim or entitlement, and have been expressly prohibited from using.
The point is to create a fait accompli, and of course it would be a shame to waste a perfectly lovely Death Star once you've gone to the trouble and expense of building it, no?
And there's no widespread public outcry. And concomitantly, there's no leadership from the complicit political elite-- which, face it, is the majority in both parties, and the party leadership-- challenging the status quo and appropriately decrying it to We the People.
Instead, there's a standing wave of acquiescence to the illicit authority of the ruling cabal...
OK, hold that thought, and I'll be back as soon as I can think of an upbeat closer.

Goddamned hell! This year has really, really sucked so far. God, you fucking owe us now!
My profound sympathies to Jen and Steve's family. Take good care of yourselves!
Wow, this is terrible. He was one of the more unique posters on the internet. The world will miss him.

Steve was an inredible writer and blogger (two very different things). He had a unique voice in the bloggosphere and he was extremely loving and thoughtful to his regular posters, often joining the comment thread to agree or disagree (firmly!) with them but showing he'd read and thought about their points and remembered them even if they posted infrequently. His interests were wide and his enthusiasms wider. He was, as atrios says, a streeghtfighter online but also a nice, generous, thoughtful guy. I'm crushed I never got to meet him. My thoughts are with Jen and his real world family, and his on line family. He was an incredible guy and he leaves a gaping hole in the bloggosphere.
I will gladly let you take Jeff Godlstein, Charles Johnson AND Acehole Spades, if you will only give us Gilly back. Thank you.

Fuck.
As someone who has enjoied his blog for years, I hope his friends and family can at least take comfort in knowing that his fearless spirit gave hope to many people during the Bush years.
Steve will be missed.

Damn! Damn! I was afraid of this. When I heard about how bad it was this time, I was afraid of this. He was a powerful, passionate voice against the republican machine. I will sorely miss reading him. He had fight. I was so hoping that fight would pull him through this.
I hope they don't follow through on the plan I saw to simply make the site go away after 30 days. Steve's words should be left out there for people to read, long, long after this.

for every gem he wrote he spewed 25 more
there are better voices for we liberals than someone who can't allow others to practice free speech when they disagree with him

There's a Harvey Keitel line in a Tarantino movie: "Just because you are a character doesn't mean that you have character".
Steve Gilliard was a character who had character to spare!
NBL- a true douchebag. Go fuck yourself.

Almost every day something happens and I wonder what Steve would have to say about it.

Fuck the fucking Yankees, and fuck the fucking fuckers...
I'm pissed off and sad beyond words. Steve Gilliard was one of the very best bloggers, and one of the handful I would check many times a day. Found him, like many others, in Kos before and during the Iraq invasion, and with Billmon, he was one of the only ones to see what was coming. And with Billmon, he was one of the 2 who was the most able to show what was wrong with the whole wingnut thing, with the war, and one of the 2 who had enough anger at what was going on to accurately represent how pissed I was and am with all of this.
Then Billmon went offline once and for all.
Then Gilly...
I so feared this day that I checked the site fewer times with every passing week, and had an awful feeling when Jen said she wouldn't report further.
Blog depression, damn...
I want to see Bush and his whole house of cards go down, go down hard, to vindicate Steve for all the crap he took from rightwing and Vichy Dems.
My thoughts and best wishes go to Jen and to Steve's family.
The world lost one of the very good guys.
