GravatarLiars for Bush,

I remember the revelation in Richard Clarke's book about how Clinton comforted the boy at the Pan Am Air memorial. And at Columbine he was also very private and respectful.

Contrast with Ashley's story.

GravatarRefugees create new 'Baghdad'

Millions of Iraqis have been forced to leave their homes because of the continuing violence in the country. Many of them have fled to Damascus where the Syrian government is asking why the Americans and the British are not doing more to ease the refugee problem.

GravatarA mother and her three daughters who forced two toddlers to take part in a "dog fight" and filmed it walked free from court yesterday.

The women, including the children's mother, goaded the tearful brother and sister to punch each other and even use a magazine and hairbrush as weapons. When the boy, who was in a nappy, stopped fighting they called him a "wimp" and "bloody faggot".

Passing sentence at Plymouth crown court, Judge Francis Gilbert said the video taken of the fight was "shocking".

He said: "You laughed at them, you mocked them, you swore at them. You compelled them to hit each other even though they clearly did not want to. You were cruel, callous, clearly causing the children to hurt each other for your own pleasure."

Indeed. I started with French in 4th grade, German in 6th, and tinkered with Russian on my own until college. Gravatar'Wash Post' Gets Scathing Military Report on Haditha Massacre

By E&P Staff

Published: April 21, 2007 9:15 AM ET

NEW YORK In a front-page report by Josh White today, The Washington Post reveals today that a probe of the 2005 incident in Haditha, Iraq, finds that the The Marine Corps chain of command ignored "obvious" signs of "serious misconduct" in the slayings of two dozen civilians.

Further, it charges that commanders, in the Post's summary, "fostered a climate that devalued the life of innocent Iraqis to the point that their deaths were considered an insignificant part of the war, according to an Army general's investigation.

GravatarYesterday the land phone went out, but my high speed DSL is on, confirming our suspicion that it's drafting off of the neighbor, 40' away.

Now we have high hopes of cutting loose from the land phone. Email is courtesy of earthlink for $3.00.

Thinking of getting another phone on the family plan to keep our land number.

Any words of wisdom?

An excerpt from Iacocca's new book - read the entire excerpt:
Am I the only guy in this country who's fed up with what's happening? Where the hell is our outrage? We should be screaming bloody murder. We've got a gang of clueless bozos steering our ship of state right over a cliff, we've got corporate gangsters stealing us blind, and we can't even clean up after a hurricane much less build a hybrid car. But instead of getting mad, everyone sits around and nods their heads when the politicians say, "Stay the course."

Stay the course? You've got to be kidding. This is America, not the damned Titanic. I'll give you a sound bite: Throw the bums out!

You might think I'm getting senile, that I've gone off my rocker, and maybe I have. But someone has to speak up. I hardly recognize this country anymore. The President of the United States is given a free pass to ignore the Constitution, tap our phones, and lead us to war on a pack of lies. Congress responds to record deficits by passing a huge tax cut for the wealthy (thanks, but I don't need it). The most famous business leaders are not the innovators but the guys in handcuffs. While we're fiddling in Iraq, the Middle East is burning and nobody seems to know what to do. And the press is waving pom-poms instead of asking hard questions. That's not the promise of America my parents and yours traveled across the ocean for. I've had enough. How about you?...'

GravatarI love it when I get wound up and post a rant and all around me are little comments about people's dogs and their trips and they just ignore the rant and go on.

It's pretty funny when read from dispassionate distance- I feel like a loony ranting on a street corner.

no one pays for email anymore.

if you are "borrowing" dsl from the neighbor, offer them the $3/mo instead to offset their cost. the right thing to do, plus that way they won't happen to see you connected one day and block you.

GravatarGosh, Tena, I had no idea.

Rants are sacred, and to skip over one is a derilection of duty.
_________

Hersch's blockbuster story The Redirection in NY mag comes to mind. I'm half way through, taking notes. The gist - Bush's war is a holding tactic for the real objective, GET IRAN.

But the whole hidden strategy is laid out in the article, the new Iran/Contra. Ok, apropos your rant, no wonder military justice is asleep at the helm. Every now and then, military gets a shot in the arm, like Gates and that brash new 4-star.

The real front is clandestine, funded secretly to the nines, run by Cheney, Abrams, Khalilzad, and Bandar with cheerleader Rice.

Read it, its chilling.

GravatarWith the exploding scandals at the Justice Department and the World Bank enveloping his administration, President Bush voiced "full confidence" in Alberto Gonzales and Paul Wolfowitz this week. For the background, see:
"President Bush, Confidence Man."

GravatarSince Greenwald refers to it, this is from The Paranoid Style in American Politics:

"As a member of the avant-garde who is capable of perceiving the conspiracy before it is fully obvious to an as yet unaroused public, the paranoid is a militant leader. He does not see social conflict as something to be mediated and compromised, in the manner of the working politician. Since what is at stake is always a conflict between absolute good and absolute evil, what is necessary is not compromise but the will to fight things out to a finish. Since the enemy is thought of as being totally evil and totally unappeasable, he must be totally eliminated—if not from the world, at least from the theatre of operations to which the paranoid directs his attention. This demand for total triumph leads to the formulation of hopelessly unrealistic goals, and since these goals are not even remotely attainable, failure constantly heightens the paranoid’s sense of frustration. Even partial success leaves him with the same feeling of powerlessness with which he began, and this in turn only strengthens his awareness of the vast and terrifying quality of the enemy he opposes."

Written in 1964.
