The new issue of the Weekly Standard features excerpts of the forthcoming biography Cheney: The Untold Story of America's Most Powerful and Controversial Vice President by Stephen Hayes. The publication date of the book is July 24; quotation from the book by those who have received prepublication copies is embargoed until then. Over the past three years Steve interviewed Cheney for nearly thirty hours and interviewed more than 600 other sources for the book. I don't think I'm violating any confidences to state that Steve's book furnishes an intimate portrait of a remarkable public servant.

Two reasons: (1) I think the Dems are going to take the WH this time (assuming no Diebold) no matter who they run, but the president is going to need a strong majority in the House. We've got to get to the point where HoJo and Mary Landrieu can't hijack us; and (2) I'm supporting Hil in the primaries (unless Gore throws his hat in) and she's got enough $$$ for now.

why the fuck is it a SHOW? In the old soapbox days it was a 24/7 event.
Why can't we have a day long panel and then have it youTubed in segments according to topic so that the public can access according to their own time and interests that which they may need to satisfy their concerns as they determine who is the best fit to their philosophies on the issues they intend to frame their vote.

An Open Letter to CNN from Michael Moore
7/14/07
Dear CNN,
Well, the week is over -- and still no apology, no retraction, no correction of your glaring mistakes.
I bet you thought my dust-up with Wolf Blitzer was just a cool ratings coup, that you really wouldn't have to correct the false statements you made about "Sicko." I bet you thought I was just going to go quietly away.
Think again. I'm about to become your worst nightmare. 'Cause I ain't ever going away. Not until you set the record straight, and apologize to your viewers. "The Most Trusted Name in News?" I think it's safe to say you can retire that slogan.
You have an occasional segment called "Keeping Them Honest." But who keeps you honest? After what the public saw with your report on "Sicko," and how many inaccuracies that report contained, how can anyone believe anything you say on your network? In the old days, before the Internet, you could get away with it. Your victims had no way to set the record straight, to show the viewers how you had misrepresented the truth. But now, we can post the truth -- and back it up with evidence and facts -- on the web, for all to see. And boy, judging from the mail both you and I have been receiving, the evidence I have posted on my site about your "Sicko" piece has led millions now to question your honesty.
I won't waste your time rehashing your errors. You know what they are. What I want to do is help you come clean. Admit you were wrong. What is the shame in that? We all make mistakes. I know it's hard to admit it when you've screwed up, but it's also liberating and cathartic. It not only makes you a better person, it helps prevent you from screwing up again. Imagine how many people will be drawn to a network that says, "We made a mistake. We're human. We're sorry. We will make mistakes in the future -- but we will always correct them so that you know you can trust us." Now, how hard would that really be?
As you know, I hold no personal animosity against you or any of your staff. You and your parent company have been very good to me over the years. You distributed my first film, "Roger & Me" and you published "Dude, Where's My Country?" Larry King has had me on twice in the last two weeks. I couldn't ask for better treatment.
That's why I was so stunned when you let a doctor who knows a lot about brain surgery -- but apparently very little about public policy -- do a "fact check" story, not on the medical issues in "Sicko," but rather on the economic and political information in the film. Is this why there has been a delay in your apology, because you are trying to get a DOCTOR to say he was wrong? Please tell him not to worry, no one is filing a malpractice claim against him. Dr. Gupta does excellent and compassionate stories on CNN about people's health and how we can take better care of ourselves.
So nominating somebody who's guaranteed to lose is a sign of seriousness?
1) No guarantee she'll lose.
2) It's not a backroom selection, but one by the masses. You're sounding like Lieberman after the Dems in his state chose Lamont.
Disagree with the choice, but saying shit like that really makes you sound like a goddamned curmudgeon who can't see past his own hatred of an individual.

yup
In Delaware 2004 the two parties got all of the room. The Independent party chair threatened to sue public television WHYY because they had blocked all by the R and D Congressional candidates from debate.
A local civic unbrella group was excoriated for limiting their debate night to the major parties as well. '
Even though Sen. Tom Carper was a no show, they refused to allow Mike Berg of the Green Party a seat on the stage and so he jumped up there anyway and refused to step down until a county cop approached him.
Many people walked out and shouted out and the chair of the group who moderated ended up resigning.

I don't think she's "guaranteed" to lose. I think it would be a closer election Hillary/R than OtherDem/R, but the Dems win in '08, period. Way too much buyer's remorse out there for any other outcome.
It's the next 4 years that I worry about. Not only will the hate speech ramp up, her "leadership" is not something I look forward to.
This country needs an inspiring leader, and she ain't it.

Facts creep in, and truth leaks out when there are debates. Messes up the spin something fierce.
Much nicer to just extend the campaign commercial to the 'debate' forum.
Tho, to be fair, is it the two parties colluding, or is it the fact that ALL parties now use agencies that are essentially professional advertisers to 'sell' themselves?
If "all you got is a hammer, everything looks like a nail", then "all you got is an ad agency, everything looks like a 30 second sound bite opportunity", not so?

In your new memoir, “The Prince of Darkness,” you complain about the $160,000 you’ve spent on legal fees and claim that your income has taken a dive as a result of your role in this. Can you elaborate? I left CNN, which was my biggest payer, and my lecture fees were down. I was a little bit untouchable in the eyes of some people. I was off “Meet the Press” for two years. I have a much lower role with Fox News than I had at CNN.

The home warranty has some foundation 'verbage' included in it. My Dad took a look at it when we went over there the other day (smart in the ways of foundations, but by no means an expert), and said it looked pretty good. Probably a tired argument, and intellectually lame, but how about this?
We organize and encourage voters of both parties to vote in the primaries, in their party of choice, to vote against the incumbent, whoever it is. Sure, we'll lose a lot of decent leaders, as well as a lot of losers, but there would be change. And that is sorely needed now. How 'bout it?

Kerry got chosen because he had an effective well funded political machine, and his ducks in a row, like Hilary.
However, she has been conventional, learning only recently you have to get 100% behind your convictions or people don't believe you. Wonder if she would go back to being wishy-washy, ineffective if the preznit. I hope not.

I just did a post:
What's being contested is how easily can the president call up Guard units for domestic emergencies, such as Hurricane Katrina. Authorities agree that Katrina justified the Guard call-ups. But under the two century-old Insurrection Act, only a large scale domestic emergency qualifies. And the 19th century Posse Comitatus act further barred the use of the military as a domestic police force.
Senator Patrick Leahy says that concept was turned upside down when the Bush administration slipped in a much broader use of the military into the defense bill, such as deployments on the Mexican border. "It did overturn Posse Comitatus," Leahy said. "It broke down what I call tension, a very appropriate tension, between the states and the federal government. It basically said the states don't exist."
Vermont Adjutant General Mike Dubie notes that the National Guard Association, representing all Guard units across the country, went on record as opposing the expansion of presidential power to call up the Guard for domestic purposes. "The construct has worked fine the way it is," he said, "and we just think we're more able to react on a state and local level by answering to the governor. So that's the way we'd like it to stay."
Leahy calls it a power grab. "We're putting too much power in the White House," he said. "I know people like Vice President Cheney would like to put all the power in the White House and forget the courts, forget the governors, forget the congress. I think that would be a mistake."
Leahy says all fifty states agree, and his legislation putting control of the Guard back where it was will pass Congress, -- and withstand any presidential veto, if it should come to that.
