Wow. I mean WOW! I never heard this story before. How in G-d's name can we get this story heard by the rest of the nation. It is sickening. The whole anti-Clinton rage thing is one of the biggest manifestations of the Rightwing insanity that has gripped our country over the past two decades. It is not just past history because it is going to be used at full power in the upcoming election cycle. It is clearly a dangerous form of mental illness because it paints any legitimate opposition to Hillary with its stink..

Here's another Huckabee story you won't read about in the Republican press:
When the Jonesboro Middle School shooting occured, Huckabee was governor. Soon after the shooting, he published a book called When Kids Kill, capitalizing not only on the deaths of young kids but also on his then-current status as governor of the state in which the shooting occured. When asked if he was going to donate profits to the victims' fund, he grew petulant and asserted his "right" to keep the money because, after all, he had kids that would soon be in college and capitalizing on the deaths of other people's children would help finance their tuitiion.
And no, I'm not making any of this up.

I've been listening to a rerun of a Wha'd'ya Know from 2005 - Michael interviewed Connie Schultz of the Plains-Dealer, who had just won the Pulitzer for commentary (and is married to OH Sen Sherrod Brown). The thing that kept making me mad was that she was going on and on about how after the swiftboaters in 2004 and Katrina, journalists were *finally* starting to act like journalists and she had no doubt they would continue to start to think about asking the hard questions of Bush and his cronies.
Every time she would talk about the war, all I could think was "And two years later you're all doing the same goddam thing all over again with Iran."

The Glock-wielding dog-hanging Huckabee son is the same one who, while a member of student government at ASU, set up businesses to siphon money out of the SGA without competitive bidding and who, when caught by the city operating a business without a privilege license, displayed his pettiness by first arguing that it wasn't a "real" business (of course it wasn't; it was only set up to graft the student government funds) and then by paying for the required privilege license with pennies...thousands of pennies.
Of course, one can't blame the kid...his dad had been teaching him through example for years that it was A-OK to just help yourself to other people's money and then whine about how "unfair" it is when it's pointed out that this is what's known as, you know, stealing.

This bird when I first moved in was very shy, and though I heard it singing in the mornings I could never get a look at it. Lately it's been perching on my porch, and seems to be less scared of me, my family and the dogs. To be fair parole situations are complex.
If we sully ourselves with this case, we lower ourselves to their level and lose the civility that is our claim to the moral high ground. After all, there are humanitarian grounds for letting a serial rapist go free if you honestly, and within the framework of your faith, which we have to respect, believe Bill Clinton to be responsible.

Yes, it really happened. The county sherriff at the time was famously corrupt. It was never determined how he came to be in possession of DuMond's testicles, nor who the persons who performed the castration were. The sheriff died a few years after the incident, and to this day, all that is known is that a) somehow, DuMond's testicles were parted from his body and b) said testicles wound up in a jar on the sherriff's desk.
But you know, vigilantes cutting his nuts off does nothing to prove his innocence in committing the rape.

There's got to be records of those statements, right?
And, Gene Lyons wrote briefly about the testicles--seems there's lots of thought Dumond cut off his own balls, which is apparently not unknown among criminals of his sort. There was no evidence of anyone else in the house or of forced entry.
The sheriff's actions are--uh--interesting, to put it mildly. Baroque and grisly, the whole ball thing is.

But if any disservice was done to DuMond, it was in not prosecuting the people who castrated him.
For the rape, he got the prison time he deserved. He did commit the rape, and he should have never been let out. He had a long record of violence, including suspected murder, and anyone who knew anything about the case (including me but apparently not the governor who had access to the entire file) knew that this guy was a bad egg, and as sad as it might be for him personally to have no balls, that in no way relieved the state from imposing punishement for crimes he committed.

Northeastern states: BOHICA! Heating oil's gonna get ya really bad this winter, if the BushCo oil price spike continues. Latest news was, of course, the usual "unexpectedly low heating oil inventories."
...our present spike in oil has nothing to do with peak oil direclty, but instead everything to do with a gush of dollars. Peak dollar capacity, not peak production capacity, is what is making $100/bbl the new "over/under" number among the oil traders I talk to. They freely admit that the worse the mistakes of Bush and Bernanke, the better it is for them. This is how to win the economic game: make it so that others pay if you win, and others pay if you lose. If Iraq had been won, Bush and his friends would be riding the tax cuts from the activity created. Now that it has failed, others pay the price in the form of plummeting land values and higher oil costs.
The present spike of oil is, to some extent, driven by offshoring and demand. This decade is really like the 1920's not the 1930's.
If a Rethug is elected prez under these economic circumstances, it will be due to stealing the election, total MCM* lies on the R's behalf, and complete Dem incompetence. The latter seems more and more likely lately, unfortunately, given our Congresscritters' lack of spine....
The real reason for the spike in oil prices is the pouring of dollars into the global economy meant to bail out the banking sector without imposing any accountability on the people who run it. ~~Sterling Newberry

Re: the Newberry quote--I recall reading that the Middle East oil suppliers saw the increase in per barrel price as simply maintaining the status quo for their revenue since they trade oil in a declining value dollar.
We are so fucked.

If a Rethug is elected prez under these economic circumstances, it will be due to stealing the election, total MCM* lies on the R's behalf, and complete Dem incompetence. The latter seems more and more likely lately, unfortunately, given our Congresscritters' lack of spine....
I'm shifting away from "they'll never give up power" more toward "they'll happily hand both the WH and the Congress to Dems just as the full extent to which the economy and the war have gone down the crapper becomes clear." The Dems will discover every last bit of resources gone and have no choice but to seek some revenue increases. The GOP will fight them at every turn, the MCM will help, and Cheney's minions scattered throughout the bureaucracy will work to subvert the day to day functioning of the government. They will make the Clenis years look like a love-in.
There will be no reason for them to stay in power to be blamed. They will have stolen everything of worth. They also know the Dems would never ever ever abuse the dictatorial powers they have amassed (not even Hillary), so those will sit unused until the Dems build up the economy, fix all the problems Bush created, and get the country back on track. At that point they will steal the next election and start over.
But I'm just spitballing here.
