GravatarThings fall apart; the center cannot hold..."

Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the center cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.

Sorry to hear that man who invented the term Eschaton has passed away. I always wondered where that came from but I was too lazy to google it.

GravatarRules are not enough to create the conditions for civil behavior, in war or otherwise.

My problem has always been with the definition of "civil discourse" favored by the fuckheads who are most interested in such things. Their definition requires me to give them the benefit of the doubt long after they've squandered it by, e.g., repeatedly telling lies, attacking strawmen, moving the goalpost, and ignoring basic facts that destroy the flimsy premises upon which their arguments depend.

Fuck these people.

GravatarI will try this again (But I am in a pissy mood and hurting but I have thought about this for a long time)

Writers and those who want to be writers try to find the good in all of us. Sometimes they even create a world that they like better and dwell there as much as they can. In this world they are the master - a godlike creature who controls this world. Within the confines of this world, everything works the way that it "Should."

The writer tries to explain that this world of their creation is a world that could and maybe even SHOULD be our world. When it is not: or when the words of the writer are misinterpreted or ignored or used in a way that they never intended or or or or - it leads to an overwhelming sadness that is difficult to describe. (The opposite of this is the overwhelming joy that one finds in the creation itself. A dual-edged sword leading to the conundrum of creativity.)

But I am prolly full of shit.

http://www.theoildrum.com/node/4526

Implications of a Ten Day Refinery Outage

Insight 5. One of the biggest refined product pipelines, Colonial Pipeline, is now reported to be shut down, because of lack of refined product input.

Colonial pipeline is one of the largest pipelines, with a capacity of 2.4 million barrels a day. It serves the Southeast and the East Coast.
Until Colonial pipeline is back to carrying full capacity of gasoline, diesel, and other refined products, there are likely to be shortages along the gulf coast and the Southeast. The Northeast may also begin to see shortages.

Other major outages have also been reported. Explorer pipeline, carrying 700,000 barrels a day of petroleum products from Texas/LA to Indiana, is completely shut down. Plantation pipeline, carrying 600,000 barrels a day of petroleum products from Louisiana to Virginia, is operating at reduced rates.

I grew up in Tustin which is not far from the coast, Disneyland etc. Really in the heart of OC. In high school we'd go to Lake Arrowhead for breakfast and a little skiing and in the afternoon we'd go bodysurfing at Newport. After 9PM you could pay $5.00 at Disneyland and get in to go dancing until closing. I was back home to see my mom last month and for the first time in probably 15 years I didn't want to run screaming for the airport ASAP. It seemed calmer and less frenetic for some reason.
I realized that I had a fairly privileged youth living there.

I'm really pretty ignorant of the whole process. Like, other than proximity to offshore oil rigs, is there a reason the refineries are located on the coast?

Robert James Waller, who wrote that dreadful "Bridges of Madison County" had the most bloated ego of any author I ever met. Meeting him was awful but it made for a great story.

Gravatar'll take a stab ... a belief that you are a part of something larger and more important than your self ... we're losing that and our ideal of a socially cooperative society is breaking down bit by bit.

I agree; I think that is part of it. The times that I bite my tongue and find a politer way to say what I was going to say are times when I want to preserve a functioning community that I think I belong to and that I think is more important than just giving full rein to my id.

Interesting diary at kos today about this guy that had captured the screen shot of wikipedia a couple of days ago to explain the Bush Doctrine in a diary. The page didn't mention Krauthammer.

And then, two days later, the page pops up, stating that Krauthammer was the originator of the Bush Doctrine. From what I understand, the diarist wrote Krauthammer to ask if he had updated the wikipedia page himself, but Krauthammer hasn't responded.

GravatarI live and work in Central TX. Our area is crisscrossed with pipelines for everything from crude oil to natural gas. On my route to work I pass pipelines for all manner of things.
They color code the fence posts next to the road so you know (presumably) what kind of pipeline it is. Sometimes there is a helpful sign too. I believe that the pipeline that blew a few years back was owned by Marathon oil..and then there was one that blew about 10 years ago in Washington state and tore up a good long section of an area near I think it was Bellingham. Gasoline had leaked into a river and two boys playing with a lighter set it off.

It is not only that, SB, the role of the males in this movie were disgusting as well. Richard Gere played some sort of predatory banker who specialized in ruining less men's lives by taking their companies from them and destroying them. Jason Alexander played a lecherous lawyer who assisted him. And the Hispanic actor (who usually does an excellent job) played a pretty nasty fellow as well.

In fact, if you think about it, none of the characters in this movie were people whom you would actually like to know. But it is typical for Gary Marshall.

GravatarDid anybody get a picture of Dobbs doing this?

GravatarAppeal to the "Decideds" who don't know how to vote. Best chance.

GravatarOh and I hated "Steel Magnolias", too.

I thought Olympia Dukasis and Shirley McLaine were funny in that.

GravatarPlimpton? I kind of liked him - but please don't forget Jay McInerney.

Did he do the scotch and cigar thing for you? Cheap theater ... over-arching ego.

Never met McInerney, but then, what would be the point? Does he, ahem, lack affect?

GravatarUnf. my wife informs the free chair we just got from the neighbors has a "vague puke smell."

I've never realized till lately that so many people were stuck in the past.

Or longing for it.

GravatarFWIW, a pic of Palin's venue in Carson City. Capacity 5,000?

Google image search blows donkey dicks. Tried to find additional pics. 538 hits of everything from the Finnish Ice Hotel to a paraplegic dog.

Horse shit.

GravatarBack when I was single I had more than one guy tell me they found it intimidating that I owned my own home.

I find it highly attractive. Will you be my sugar mama?

GravatarBut it is typical for Gary Marshall.

And Penny Marshall is to blame for "Big" In that one, men are depicted as so immature that a grown woman can date a 12 yo(in the body of a man) and never know the difference.

GravatarIf you're in a safe state but near a battleground state, go into the battleground state.

Yep, Team Buckner hits Manchester, NH next weekend...

GravatarSapient--today I did 1/2 phone calls, 1/2 getting folks to register, but they had some "data entry" gig involving punching in the data from the voter reg forms--very little human contact==maybe somethin like that in ur state.

went to a low-rung "Adult Assisted Living Facilty" to sign up or renew some oldies--made me grateful for what I've got & remember the bigger picture of actually doin this to help folks, not just to beat those lyin fascist fucks.

GravatarMedia don't seem as in love with McCain as they were with Bush.

GravatarSometimes I really do not understand English well-enough. This sentence, for example, has a meaning that eludes me. (From John at Americablog) " She's just very interesting, smart, funny, boisterous, and outspoken - the kind of woman every gay man would love."

GravatarI think it will be the ground game and a smarter air game in IA, CO, NM, VA, FL, and OH that will determine if Obama is our next president.

so phone/volunteer/cash in and from those states are crucial. bumperstickers, yard signs, rallies, energizing your base. we can do it.

my two cents

I think you missed the "back when I was single" part.

GravatarSo did the debates in 2004. Everyone who is waiting for the debates to save us is in for a rude awakening.

Respectfully disagree. Obama is no Kerry.

But McCain/Palin are the Bush/Cheney people have had quite enough of.

Also, we weren't "treated" to Katrina until 2005 - and people weren't yet sickened by Iraq and convinced the country was on the "wrong track".

There are so many things that have changed. It's no contest. People in 2008 have real problems.

30 seconds of Obama talking and 30 seconds of McCain talking make it pretty clear who has the solutions.

The fire next time.

GravatarI thought Olympia Dukasis and Shirley McLaine were funny in that.

I should clarify - some of it was hilarious and as someone said, I heard the play was better. The main story was just too overwrought for me. The main character's death seemed so unneccessary, IMO.

I love Southern things but something all that crap gets on my nerves, too.

GravatarEverything now depends on CO and NM.

NH, PA, WI and MI are going Obama.

FL, VA and OH are going for McCain.

Kerry + IA, NM and CO wins it for Obama.

I did magic w the witches tonight, but, honestly, there's an old Wiccan saying that the best spell for getting a new job is to fill out a job application. You can do it while chanting and you can do it with deep intention, but it's still the best spell.

Drive people to the polls. Make calls. Write letters. Do whatever practical stuff you can do. After you've done all that, here's a good chant:

By the power of three times three,
Obama president shall be.
Palin's a fraud for all to see.
This is my will, so mote it be.

When the Evening Bulletin was still around (died in 1982) in Philadelphia, the Sunday mag that came with the paper had some good articles.

There was one story about how women don't need men for financial support and can be more choosy.

Which is true.

You should have seen the shit the author of that article got. She called a "man hater" and everything else.

To rightards, "feminine" means "dependent" and "subservient".

Oil needs to be refined into gasoline. So a barrel of oil and a gallon of gas could be separately priced.

But the falling price of oil does lend credence to the speculative aspect of oil prices the last few months.

GravatarFOund the Christopher Buckley demolishing of Tom Clancy, which is worth reading:

I do not grasp that as a complete view. There are a lot of things from the past I miss. But I also remember a lot of the bad. Progress is good if we respect where we came from.

I was reading some of the messages on the Houston Chron site. People were sending real time reports on their situation and others were asking. Cross country communication. I sort of marveled at that. During the storm we had live video of the events as well as the dumb reporters doing their man against the wind imitations. Times change. Other people who lost power and unable to hit the internet were texting on their cells. Amazing.

Now compare that to the 1900 Galveston strike and what it took to even let the world know it had happened.

GravatarHey, I liked Fried Green Tomatoes. The scene where they throw the cans of food out of the train always makes me choke up.

BINGO -- and that's the official media narrative between now and election day -- it's called priming the pump for a rationale to explain why the generic Democrat lost...yet again.

You're right -- the "debates" are just another distraction...one more vacuous bobblehead IOKIYAR rulz fest -- that fix is in.

Currently, I'm working the phones, working the refs, registering new voters, knocking on doors, planting yard signs, and will volunteer as a poll watcher on election day -- I just hope it will be enough to turn back the tide of systematic GOPer caging and direct-mail election fraud.

Also, throwing some money to the ACLU is always good.

Gravatar"Very long time readers, if any of you still exist,"

Here I is, baby! When I started reading, Cosmic Grappler, Tena and Anonymous ruled the comments nest, with Ricky Vandel (and the Church of Fandel) and Anonymous as trolls. Those weren't the days! And some nights, too.

Of course, that was when Eschaton was a sucky blog. Things are much better now! And I comment much, much less, which is undoubtedly a relief to everyone, including me.

I have given up commenting to pursue my study of Graham Greene, the English writer. An absorbing and complex man, or a self-indulgent hypocrite?
