'Founded in 2002, Modest Needs is an award-winning public charity with a simple but critical mission: we work to stop the cycle of poverty BEFORE it starts for the low-income workers whom conventional philanthropy has forgotten.
We do this by empowering compassionate members of the general public to safely and securely help hard-working, low-income households to afford the kinds of short-term emergency expenses that we've all encountered before: the unexpected car repair, the unanticipated visit to the doctor, or the unusually large heating bill, for example.'

"[...]Speaking of math -- the Obama campaign rolls out another former DNC chairman's endorsement on Friday: Paul Kirk, a superdelegate who led the party from 1985-1989, is coming out for Obama -- a day after Andrew's switch, an Obama campaign official tells The Note. (And don't count on that being it for the day, as the dribble continues.)
From Kirk's statement Friday morning: "It is with a great sense of pride and confidence in his leadership that I am delighted to publicly endorse Senator Barack Obama and pledge my support to him as former National Democratic Chairman and as a superdelegate....[...]" http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/T...=3105288&

Right, 'cause we could never find YouTube if the eggman didn't link to it.

LOUD OBBS is gonna plotz
I send greetings to those celebrating Cinco de Mayo.
Cinco de Mayo is a joyful day in Mexican history and an important milestone in the history of freedom. On May 5, 1862, an outnumbered band of Mexican soldiers defeated a large European power against overwhelming odds at the Battle of Puebla. Emboldened by victory and yearning for independence, Mexican patriots ultimately won independence in 1867. Today, we remember these heroic accomplishments and all those working to advance peace and liberty around the globe.
This holiday is also an opportunity to recognize the strong ties of family, economy, and culture that bind the United States and Mexico. Through a shared commitment to economic liberty and the universal right of freedom, the United States and Mexico continue to build a future of prosperity and opportunity for all people.
Laura and I send our best wishes. Que Dios los bendiga.

Mickey Kantor Does Not Hold the People of Indiana in the Highest Esteem [Byron York]
I've gotten a bunch of emails with a link to this clip on YouTube, a snippet of a scene from The War Room, the hagiographic documentary on the 1992 Clinton campaign team. In it, Mickey Kantor, one of the Clintons' oldest friends and advisers, refers to the people of Indiana in some rather ugly, profane and uncomplimentary ways. From Hillary Clinton's perspective, it's not exactly a good thing to come out a few days before the Indiana primary
The thing has been debunked, Yorkie, even by Indianians.

Bush just now on CNN, at meeting in St. Louis:
"All I want is for America to be treated the way we treated other nations. I think that's a reasonable thing to ask."
"A tariff is a tax, more ex-pen-sivve" (spits all over the microphone as he says "ex-pen-sive")

Eh, as much as I'd like to saty this is evidence of racism (I think there's plenty enough of that in the 'You can't nominate a black guy' argument the Clinton team is relying on for Sd's), this is a common souther expression (though really, it shouldn't be) to denote what is generally referred to as 'white trash' in polite company. Of course, these people shouldn't be called 'white trash' either, not just for being born poor anyway.

It's amazing to me how stupid the Hillary Clinton campaign is. You would think they would know that playing the race card right before primaries dominated by African American Democrats would be counterproductive, and yet they continue to play the race card right before these primaries!
RedSox04 |
05.02.08 - 1:02 pm | #
Thanks for elevating the dialogue, Atrios. I was just thinking this morning, if there's one thing this primary campaign was missing it was the injection of the "n-word" on a non stop 24 hour cable loop.
I think the "white n****r" (sorry, I'm 51 years old but if my 88-year old mother thought I even typed that word she'd wash my mouth out with soap) is bogus, but the "shit" part is fairly indisputable - I do not hear "shitting", as in "the White House must be worried". Combined with Hillary's "screw 'em" comment toward middle-class whites, her coffee-machine/gas station fiasco and her "God bless us rich folks, dahlink" comment to Billo, it seems as though the Clinton campaign is its own worst enemy. But it is like something Kantor and the rest of the Clinton coterie would have said, since they have never really given a flying fuck about anyone but themselves. Fortunately, it appears that the Obama people didn't jump on it, unlike the Clintons, who would have been screaming about it to the MSM 24/7. It just makes Obama look better, since instead of focusing on gossip he is attacking Hill's inane gas tax idea, calling her out for siding with McCain against the average American - you know, those 99% of the country that God, apparently, hasn't blessed. Isn't it funny, though, how the same tactics of lies and innuendo and half-truths that the Clinton campaign has been using has turned around to bite them in the ass? Even if the video isn't true, you'll hear about it, and Clinton will have to deny it at every turn. Maybe she should denounce Kantor - an advisor to her campaign, unlike Wright or Ayers to Obama's campaign. Oh, but then she would have to admit she did something wrong but, of course, she could always say that the PSTD she got from her Bosnia experience warped her fragile little mind.

"I've never used that word in my entire life, ever, under any circumstance, ever," an angry Kantor told The Huffington Post, citing his and his parent's work fighting for civil rights. Note to Hillary:
They who live by the Drudge and O'Reilly, die by the Drudge and O'Reilly.
She doesn't mind using whatever is available - until, of course, someone turns the tables on her. Has she cried yet? Have the tears of persecution flowed? Has she performed her poor, put-upon woman routine, insulting feminism in this country one more time to score political points? Why should she even have any worries at all, she she and her cohorts are so surely blessed by God?
I believe the video should be removed, if it is shown to be a fake. But I do not want to hear the false cries of indignation from the Clinton campaign, who tried to used a video of Obama scratching his head in order to infer that he was giving Hillary the finger. Actually, the last thing Obama needs is this video, if he really wanted to get nasty. Hillary constantly talks about how she is trying to get all of this dirty laundry out there because it is what the Rethugs will use against Obama in the GE. But Obama could easily bring up Gennjifer and Monica and stained blue dresses and impeachment hearings and Webster Hubble and the McDougals and the Rose Law Firm and the bimbo alerts and the Bosnia tarmac and the hypocrisy of DADT and DOMA and the futures trading profits and the losses to Rethugs that the Clintons caused to make the Dem majority in Congress disappear and their contribution to Al Gore's loss in 2000 because Billy Boy couldn't keep his dick in his pants and...well, you get the point. It doesn't matter if any of it is true. What IS true is that the Rethugs are going to remind the American public of all the drama and lies and hypocrisy of the Clinton years, and the MSM will gladly help them along so Gramps McLame can take the GE. So while the MSM and the blogs are obsessed with what may or may not be true about this video, Obama is lambasting both Clinton and McCain on their stupid-ass gas tax idea. So Clinton is being tarred by her past, just like she has done to Obama. How are you going to fight the terrorists if you can't fight a video on YouTube?

Lambert, I am a 51-year old gay white male and I am more of a feminist than Hillary Clinton has ever been. Hillary would throw every woman in this country under a bus to win the nomination. She'd do the same to women that she and Bill did to gays with DADT and DOMA. So don't wag that finger of mysogyny at me, because it isn't going to work. I find it absolutely astonishing that in 2008 there are still people in this country who bring up the question of whether our country is ready for a woman or a black man (or a black woman, for that matter) to be president. I do not wish to deny Hillary Clinton a shot at the presidential nomination because she is a woman. I want her out of the running because she is a lying, pandering Republican-in-Democrat's-clothing. She would sell out every Democratic principle in a heartbeat. Hillary is just as much a Democrat as the next man - if the next man is Zell Miller or Joe Lieberman. Oh, and please try to explain to me how, if a videotape of an Obama staffer appeared where they said something misogynist, whether it was actually truly said or not, Clinton wouldn't be screaming about it on the MSM for 24/7 and Wolfson and Penn wouldn't be using it against him.

While I agree with Atrios that the second quote is bogus, I don't buy the explanation for the first. "Those people are shit," was the way I heard it and interpreted it... when I first watched the film in 1994.
I was attending college at a state school in Indiana at the time. We viewed the film in one of our political science classes (it was a course on political campaign administration, if memory serves) about a week or so before the '94 midterms. Being from out-of-state, the quote didn't bug me much at all. But every native Hoosier in the class, including the Democrats, were outraged. In fact, the outcry at that scene required the professor to stop the tape and rewind, because the next two minutes the buzz in the classroom drowned out the audio.
I know of at least three moderate/independent classmates who pulled the "R" lever the next week in part due to that rant, and depending how much that story got around campus, it may have cost the Dems a House seat, as a the Democratic candidate lost a tight battle for an open seat to a Republican who hammered home Clinton's unpopularity at the time. The R won by running even in the campus-area precincts, which normally leaned 60-65 percent D.
The second part is bogus, but the first quote is very, very real.

Nice work getting your 'true or not'
video picked up by Drudge. Keep up the good work.
There is an old saying, I think if come from the Bible, and if it doesn't, it doesn't matter, you can just say it does and people will believe you, there is an old saying from the Bible that says Evil turns upon itself.
I think from this its clear to me and the rest of the country that the Democrats are the party of evil, since as soon as they get even a sniff of power, they start devouring each other like orcs...
Sorry, not the Bible. Lord of the Rings. Same difference.

RedSox04 | 05.02.08 - 1:02 pm ~~~ Please note there's a difference between "playing the race card" and being accused of doing so. It appears that the Obama camp has been doing the latter to the Clintons (google Sean Wilentz), perhaps to the detriment of Obama's overall image. But it had short term payback.

I think the first utube video was audio enhanced...to hear what he whispered (not dubbed as Clinton director friend is saying). After viewing the actual documentary footage, Kantor clearly says the sh#t quote. And with regard to the white Nig#$$ quote I don't know, but there are plenty of scientific ways to find out. Sorry but don't buy the innocent "working in the white house" version. Why whisper that and his look is way too squirrely and furtive. As Bush would say "READ MY LIPS" or rather read his lips.

‘The War Room’ (PG)
By Desson Howe
Washington Post Staff Writer
November 12, 1993
... "War Room" is shot in the nonscripted, cinema-verite style by D. A. Pennebaker (whose follow-around films on President Kennedy, Hubert Humphrey and Bob Dylan are documentary classics) and Chris Hegedus. Whether Carville and company are play-acting somewhat for the cameras becomes less important as the film progresses. One can only keep up an act for so long -- especially in the throes of a campaign. Carville's tearful farewell speech to his staff as they close up just before the election, Stephanopoulos's frank talk with a potential blackmailer and a Mickey Kantor comment about the people of Indiana (when it looks as though Clinton's ahead in Dan Quayle's state) attest to this.
