GravatarCholera surge - TEHRAN, Oct 6 (Reuters) - Iran said on Saturday it had 43 cholera cases, four times more than previously announced, and added they were mostly near Iraq where there has been an outbreak of the disease, an Iranian news agency reported.

A World Health Organisation (WHO) official said on Thursday 10 cases had been confirmed in Iran. WHO has urged neighbours of Iraq, where cholera has struck more than 3,300 people since mid-August, to strengthen their defences against the disease.

...and Jackson Browne left it out of his cover, too.

Gravatar(Reuters) - A top Iraqi Sunni cleric urged Iraqis on Friday not to join U.S.-led forces in fighting al Qaeda, saying they would be helping occupiers against compatriots.

"We reject the actions of al Qaeda but they are still part of us ... Ninety percent of al Qaeda are Iraqis," Sheikh Harith al-Dari told Al Jazeera television. "It may be possible to hold a dialogue with them ... and God may help them return to reason."

"From a national, Islamic and rational point of view, it is not allowed to fight alongside occupation forces," said Dari, who heads Iraq's Muslim Clerics Association.

But Dari, whose association groups Iraq's Sunni religious leaders, said self-defence against any al Qaeda attacks was justified.

Jordan-based Dari has praised Sunni Muslim insurgent groups but denied direct links with them.

Some tribal and Sunni insurgent groups have joined the fight against al Qaeda, angered by its indiscriminate killings of civilians and harsh interpretation of Islam.

GravatarMore pushback from the legal types at Guantanomo against the seemingly politicized upper levels at DOD: War-Crimes Prosecutor Quits in Pentagon Clash

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/10/0...serland& emc=rss

Colonel Davis, a career military lawyer, had been in a bitter dispute with Brig. Gen. Thomas W. Hartmann, who was appointed this summer to a top post in the Pentagon Office of Military Commissions, which supervises the war crimes trial system.

General Hartmann, an Air Force reserve officer who worked as a corporate lawyer until recently, was appointed this summer as the legal adviser to Susan J. Crawford, a former military appeals judge who is the convening authority, a military official who has extensive powers under the military commission law passed by Congress in 2006.

Among other powers, under the law, the convening authority can approve or reject war-crimes charges, make plea deals with detainees and reduce sentences.

People involved in the prosecutions, who spoke on condition of anonymity, have said that General Hartmann challenged Colonel Davis’s authority in August and pressed the prosecutors who worked for Colonel Davis to produce new charges against detainees quickly.

They said he also pushed the prosecutors to frame cases with bold terrorism accusations that would draw public attention to the military commission process, which has been one of the central legal strategies of the Bush administration. In some cases the prosecutors are expected to seek the death penalty.
SNIP
Colonel Davis filed a complaint against General Hartmann with Pentagon officials this fall saying that the general had exceeded his authority and created a conflict of interest by asserting control over the prosecutor’s office. Colonel Davis said it would be improper for General Hartmann to assess the adequacy of cases filed by prosecutors if the general had been involved in the decision to file those cases.

In a statement last week, Colonel Davis said the issue posed a threat to the integrity of the war-crimes process. “For the greater good, Brigadier General Hartmann and I should both resign and walk away or higher authority should relieve us of our duties,” the statement said.

GravatarThe Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, has launched a renewed attack on the war in Iraq and called for "urgent attention" to stabilise the country.

Dr Williams, speaking after a visit to Syria last week, said the "terrible damage" wreaked on the region by the war in Iraq was far worse than had so far been acknowledged.

Dr Williams' comments, in an interview with the BBC, came after he met Iraqi refugees in Syria, many of them still in fear for their lives. Only last month, a new survey claimed that up to 1.2m people might have died because of the conflict.

Dr Williams said any military action against Syria or Iran that would further destabilise the region would be "criminal, ignorant... and potentially murderous folly."

I urge all of you to read The Omnivore's Dilemma by Michael Pollan. While I've always shied away from meat packed at remote plants and shipped, pre-packaged, over long distances, after reading this book I've decided from here on out the only meat (or poultry) I'll be eating will be locally pasture-raised.

Our food is shit. I went to the grocery store yesterday evening, as I was nearing the end of the book, and it felt like I was stranded on a small boat with no freshwater in the middle of the ocean - food, food everywhere, and none of it fit to eat.

GravatarFrom Gulf News…

A week-long strike at Egypt’s biggest textile company may be over, but it is likely that similar events will unfold elsewhere, experts warn.
“These strikes will happen again unless workers’ conditions are drastically improved,” says Fouad Hashem, an economics professor.
“A comprehensive reform programme should be worked out to ensure that workers receive reasonable wages to cope with high inflation rates,” he told Gulf News.
Annual inflation rates in Egypt reached 8.5 per cent last August compared with 8.9 per cent in August 2006, according to a recent cabinet report.
An estimated 27,000 workers at the Misr Textile Company in Al Mahalla Al Kubra, some 130km north of Cairo, went back to work on Monday after going on strike for a week in protest of the low wages and increments.

GravatarRowan Williams, the Archbishop of Canterbury, has criticised the neoconservatives of the Bush administration and accused them of "potentially murderous folly" for suggesting military action against Syria and Iran.

Dr Williams has just returned from Syria where he met Iraqi Christian refugees,. He warned of a problem of almost unprecedented scale as up to 1.5 million Iraqis have fled to neighbouring countries.

Speaking to the BBC, the archbishop, who opposed the invasion of Iraq from the outset, said: "When people talk about further destabilisation of the region - and you read some American political advisers speaking of action against Syria and Iran - I can only say that I regard that as criminal, ignorant and potentially murderous folly.

GravatarHalfdan - well, me too. I mean, I've never been one to buy much heavily processed "food", typically I shop the outer perimeter of the store except when I need tea, canned goods, flour, etc. And since organic stuff has become easier to find I've been steadily buying more of it. But I've been grossed out by meat and poultry for a long time - the shit they inject into the chickens (they call it "broth"; I call it saltwater at $2 a pound), e coli and mad cow, plus the fact that I discovered you can't pan fry the chicken breasts you find at the store - they're too big to properly pan-fry. It's like frankenchicken or something. After reading the book, I've decided it would be worth my while to make a meat run out to a local farm every so often, for any number of reasons.

Gravatarfuck - my ceiling fan just fell and broke my leg.

Is that going to happen every time I say Macbeth?

GravatarMatthews was steadfast in his belief that the debate left Stewart crestfallen, and Matthews victorious.

I think Tweety is the best possible example of how the media in this country reflects the national political mood. He cam to prominence (if you can call it that) during a period of absolute lunacy and reflected it perfectly. It's easy to forget that he was probably the ONLY cable news talking head who actually opposed the invasion of Iraq. But that didn't work, so he just weathervaned for the next four years.

The country is now getting its head straight, so Tweety looks progressively more insane by the moment.

His greatest legacy will be having made Keith Olbermann look even better than he actually is. And for that, a grateful nation gives thanks.

GravatarA £50m action plan to boost community cohesion and civic pride has been announced by the government.

Communities Secretary Hazel Blears says the cash will help councils across England promote integration and prevent local tensions.

It follows a Commission on Integration and Cohesion report which urged councils to identify areas where mass immigration may unsettle residents.

Key proposals include cultural briefing packs for newly-arrived migrants.

I've pointed out before:

...A back-of-the-envelope calculation shows that preventing just one truck trip a year from California to Nova Scotia saves more in fuel than does shortening the daily one-way commute by 20 miles: one 3,600-mile truck trip at six miles per gallon uses 600 gallons of diesel, while 500 car trips (two a day, five days a week, 50 weeks a year) of 20 miles each at 25 mpg uses 400 gallons of gasoline.

When burned, each litre of diesel fuel produces 2,730 grams of CO2, compared to 2,360 grams for each litre of gasoline, so the GHG costs of truck travel as compared to car travel are even worse than the fuel costs. In the above example, the one cross-continental truck journey produces about 6.2 tonnes of CO2, 70 percent more than the 3.6 tonnes of CO2 produced by an entire year's worth of daily 20-mile car commutes.

Many truck trips could, and should, be replaced by train trips, but by far a better strategy would be to eliminate as much long-distance shipping as possible, by buying locally produced goods. The City of Toronto proposes that grocery stores in the city be required to label the distance their food travels, to encourage shoppers to buy locally, but no similar legislation has been proposed in Nova Scotia.

Obviously, buying food at farmers' markets leads to very large reductions in GHG emissions. But we'll need to make similar shifts in our buying decisions for everything else we use as well: construction materials, business supplies, consumer goods, etc.

...

GravatarI'm quite seriously considering getting a couple of hens.

a friend of mine, who lives on a not large plot in NJ, has five hens. they make more eggs than she and her housemates can eat. however, she tells me that the cost of feed is roughly what the cost of buying that many eggs would be, so it depends on the price of feed in your area, if economics are your concern. there are additional benes to keeping hens (fertilizer) and i find them adorable. they run around and play with her dog, and are quiet.

GravatarNYT reports

“I have put this program in place for a reason, and that is to better protect the American people,” the president said, without mentioning the C.I.A. by name. “And when we find somebody who may have information regarding a potential attack on America, you bet we’re going to detain them, and you bet we’re going to question them, because the American people expect us to find out information — actionable intelligence so we can help protect them. That’s our job.”

First Bush denies it, then he says he did it for terrorism, than he gets Dems to pass it in new terrorism bill.

Anyway NYT sez...a once-secret Central Intelligence Agency program to detain and interrogate high-profile terror suspects.

And want to make a bet that Bushie is really only interest in torturing Mideast citizens who would blow up Western Oil contractors pipelines. Bushies only concerned with those "terrorist" Mideasterns who don't like the Bushies stealing Iraqi oil.
