please let's remember that it was not, in fact, a vote to go to war. it was a vote to authorise bush to push for inspections, work with the u.n., and it mentioned military action if all other options were exhausted.
the plain fact is that hillary naively trusted bush to act honorably and follow the letter and spirit of the bill. she deserves to be criticised for being naive, using poor judgement, being influenced by the panic of the times - but - she did not "vote to go to war"
"what's the difference?" you say? i say, if we are going to condemn somebody to hell, it behooves us to get the facts straight

For the first six years of his presidency, Bush followed a fairly predictable model when it came to appointments and key government posts. He would appoint an unqualified hack to run and/or oversee an important agency, congressional Republicans would approve said hack, and when the hack screwed up, a GOP-led Congress would balk at any oversight. The result, of course, was an ineffective and inefficient government bureaucracy that served no one (except, maybe, in the case of regulatory agencies, the Republican Party’s corporate benefactors).
It seemed like good news, then, when congressional Dems reclaimed the majority on the Hill, and told the White House that it was time to start picking capable, qualified officials for federal agencies. Not surprisingly, Bushies didn’t care for the idea, and refused to play along.
The result is an executive branch that’s even worse than before...

Now this is interesting:
A little something for the ladies
Joel Stein
February 29, 2008
You know how ladies, when they don't get what they want, can go a little crazy? Am I right, fellas? Right now, they're pretty upset about losing their first chance at a female president. This would have empowered little girls, shattered sexist beliefs about female incompetence and forced men around the world to view a woman as an agent of power instead of a sex object -- all of which, it turns out, are important to women even though they buy Star magazine. Ladies are complicated.
Because women do most of the voting, and the shopping and the TV watching and the book reading -- porn really must take up a lot of men's time -- they need to be placated. Which shouldn't be hard. You know how when your dog dies, your wife wants to get a puppy right away? That's what America has to do. We need a replacement Hillary.
Because while women are sad that Hillary Clinton seems poised to lose the Democratic nomination, they're even more dejected that there appear to be no women with enough political stature to run for president next time. That's why Barack Obama and John McCain need to pick female running mates. Either that or we're going to have to find some money in the federal budget for 150 million flower bouquets.
Imagine something similar written on race...

NEW YORK, Dec. 21 (JTA) -- Most American Jews disapprove of the war in Iraq and the way the United States is handling the campaign against terrorism, according to a new study.
The American Jewish Committee's annual Survey of American Jewish Opinion, released Wednesday, found that 70 percent of U.S. Jews disapprove of the Iraq war, with 28 percent backing it. Sixty percent of respondents said they did not support America's handling of the war on terror, while 36 percent approve.
That's just a slight change in U.S. Jewish views. In last year's AJCommittee study, 30 percent of respondents approved of the Iraq war and 66 percent disapproved. In that survey, 42 percent approved of the handling of the war on terror and 52 percent disapproved.
"Even on the eve of the war, fewer American Jews than other Americans were supportive of the prospect of going to war with Iraq," said David Harris, the AJCommittee's executive director. "As American public support has declined since 2003, Jewish support has been declining in step, but because it began at a lower level, it continues to remain at a lower level of support than other Americans."

Actually, Obama did realize there's a difference between making a speech against the Iraq War as a state senator and as a US senator. He said so in 2004.
‘When asked about Senators Kerry and Edwards' votes on the Iraq war, Obama said, "I'm not privy to Senate intelligence reports,’ Mr. Obama said. ‘What would I have done? I don't know. What I know is that from my vantage point the case was not made.’

I don't think they are so stupid as to believe anything Bush said, even at that early date.
not Bush - the POTUS. and his administration. and the NSA. and the people who were speaking for the CIA and OSP.
remember, this was before he actually had the gall to mususe and abuse the military and intelligence agencies by invading a sovereign nation without cause. and they were SENATORS - imbued with the idea that the president was bound by the law. again, he didn't fool me, but then i was not a part of the system and he did not lie directly to my face, in person, in the office of the presidency. i don't agree with their vote, but it was NOT a vote to go to war, it was a vote to give the POTUS the means with wich to leverage us OUT of war.
yeah, it's not the same thing. a wrong stupid bad vote for which they should be held accountable or at the very least denounce and reject, but since no one will be voting for dennis or mike or even ralph, watcha gonna do? obama was not exactly in the streets of dc leading peace marches at the time.

My nearest voting location is in a heavily black neighborhood. At 5p the people were waiting over two hours to vote. At 6p after I got some food, the wait was still about 2 hours, longer if you didnt have a voter reg card.
The Obama turnout was absolutely over the top . Many were there just to vote for Obama and leave, you could hear them say it out loud. Not so good for the down ballot.

I was one who supported giving President Bush the authority, if necessary, to use force against Saddam Hussein. I believe that that was the right vote. I have had many disputes and disagreements with the administration over how that authority has been used, but I stand by the vote to provide the authority because I think it was a necessary step in order to maximize the outcome that did occur in the Security Council with the unanimous vote to send in inspectors. And I also knew that our military forces would be successful. But what we did not appreciate fully and what the administration was unprepared for was what would happen the day after. http://www.cfr.org/publication/

Erin posted a comment on an earlier thread that succinctly laid out their differences. It's not the issues, it's the strategies -- Clinton's the DLC style targeting delegate rich states and drawing funds primarily from interest groups; Obama using Dean's 50-state strategy, organizing on the grassroots, small-d democratic level and inspiring voters to be informed participants and stay involved.

But what we did not appreciate fully and what the administration was unprepared for was what would happen the day after. http://www.cfr.org/publication/ 6...transcript.html

ok, i take your point. she made a statement that implied that she might be in favor of some kind of 'use of force' against saddam. i could argue that 'use of force' is rather vague is not necessarily the same as marching in there and taking over the country at all.
but, on the other hand, i really don't like her position in this statement
on the third hand, her position on the war and her votes on the war since barack got into the senate are pretty much the same as his. no es verdad? or do you have some documentation on differences?

Is a sloppy hot dago the best meal in the world, or what?
Echidne, to go with your LATimes chauvinist piggery (9:10pm), here's heartland chauvinist piggery:
Like a little girl whose Chief Executive Barbie is falling from her fingertips into the sea, Hillary Clinton's presidential ambitions are slipping tragically from her gasp. This may explain her increasingly unhinged behavior, which would be bad enough were she winning. To lose the Democratic nomination this way, however, is particularly pathetic.
• Consider her campaign's reported peddling of a photo of Sen. Barack Obama in traditional Somali clothing. Emerging soon before Tuesday's Texas and Ohio primaries, this was more than a zany picture of an exotically dressed politician, like that of Clinton herself touring Vietnam in a sloped hat. This 2006 photo, snapped during a five-nation African fact-finding mission, could ignite suspicions that Obama is a closet Muslim, a turban-clad terrorist sympathizer, or that other surprises may lurk just beneath his black skin.

I know I'm late with this, but what the hell...
I honestly don't think anyone--inside or outside of Washington--can argue with a straight face that it wasn't absolutely clear that Bush intended to invade Iraq all along. Communists see workers as servants to the state.
Both use the media as propaganda tools' Both use the state's power to ensure that workers stay in line. (see T.R.'s breaking of coal mine strikes, MacArthur's attack on the Bonus Marchers, use of the NGuard at Kent State., for a few examples)
Both use the military for aggression rather than defense Capitalists for markets/ raw materials (see MGen S.Butler's retirement speech) Communists for much the same, plus expansion of their ideology

One major reason for these differences is the candidate himself. Cutler told me Obama is adamant about consulting bona fide experts. "The staff kept saying, 'What he wants to know is that he's really talking to experts in the field. When you go see him, you know, make it clear that you're an expert.'" When it comes to economics, it's very difficult to achieve expertise without an academic background. It's a field that prizes rigorous results, supported by reams of painstakingly sifted data. (Though Reich was labor secretary, he was trained as a lawyer, not an economist.) Cutler, for example, has made his name with a series of detailed econometric studies suggesting that, contrary to the conventional wisdom on the left, Americans actually have quite a bit to show for the trillions they spend on health care.
Even a very smart non-academic can come up short by this measure. Last year, Goolsbee participated in a panel discussion with the economic advisers of the major presidential campaigns. At one point, he acknowledged the two other academics in the room and noted their dependence on intricate census data. This prompted some grumbling from the other advisers--very accomplished wonks in their own right--which the moderator acknowledged. But the truth is that almost no non-PhD would know what to do with such elaborate data sets. Or take the latest advances in behavioral economics: "We're aware of that stuff, we read the literature, believe a lot of it," says one Obama adviser. "That stuff hasn't filtered to the Washington policy community yet."
I don't see how Goolsbee is a negative factor. His addition to the team fits in with in Obama's approach to problem solving.
That's an ugly video. She reminds me of Bill Clinton in her inability to deal with criticism from the left.

Amy Goodman and Juan Gonzalez had Linda Bilmes and Joseph Stiglitz on Democracy Now today. The Three Trillion Dollar War
JOSEPH STIGLITZ: Well, we were very conservative in our book. When we say $3 trillion, that’s really an underestimate. We attributed, in our book, only $5 to $10 to the war itself. But if you look back, in 2003, futures markets, which take into account increases in demand, increases in supply—they knew that China was going to have increased demand, but they thought there would be increases in supply from the Middle East—they thought the price would remain at $25 for the next ten years or more. What changed that equation was the Iraq war. They couldn’t elicit the increase of supply in the Middle East because of the turmoil that we brought there. So we think, actually, the true numbers, not the $5 or $10 that we used, because we didn’t want to get in a quibble, but really a much larger fraction of the difference between $25 that it was at the time in 2003 and the $100 we face today.
AMY GOODMAN: You support an immediate withdrawal from Iraq, yet you say you would support a Democrat candidate for president; why? That’s voting against your views. They’re not calling for immediate withdrawal.
JOSEPH STIGLITZ: Well, the point is, we have a choice between what I would call a quick withdrawal and being there for a hundred years. If we have a hundred years, this $3 trillion number is just—you know, we’re assuming here a fairly quick scale-down of our activities over the next decade. But we’re saying by 2017, that’s the end, whereas—and when we do our $3 trillion calculation, if you’re talking about McCain’s, you know, a hundred year—we’re there for a hundred years, we’re talking about an order of magnitude larger. And I think the critical issue in writing this book is, one has to make that decision, is, say, if we’re going to be here for another hundred years, is that the best way of increasing our overall security?

The Clintonites were moderates, but they were also ideological. They explicitly rejected the liberalism of the 1970s and '80s. The Obamanauts are decidedly non-ideological. They occasionally reach out to progressive think tanks like the Economic Policy Institute, but they also come from a world-- academic economics--whose inhabitants generally lean right. (And economists at the University of Chicago lean righter than most.) As a result, they tend to be just as comfortable with ideological diversity as the candidate they advise. Just before the Iowa caucus, I saw Goolsbee approach New York Times columnist David Brooks in Des Moines and gush when the quirky conservative agreed to pose for a picture.
Who among us is not a star-struck Brooks fan?
The point is that Obama's people are non-ideological. They seem to be pragmatists who are open to different ideas.

LINDA BILMES: Well, I think that both the Democrats are clearly interested in examining the issues around how much money we would have to spend to stay in Iraq, but I’m not sure that they are looking at it the way we would advise them to look at it. What we would say is that right now we spend $12 billion a month in Iraq alone, $16 billion if you include Afghanistan.
JOSEPH STIGLITZ: And that doesn’t include the cost down the line.

hillary 10/10/02 speech on iraq war vote
invading iraq now unilaterally to depose saddam and give the iraqi people a chance at democracy would be "fraught with danger", "would set a precendent that would come back to haunt us", "so, mr. president, with all its appeal... on the present facts, is not a good option"
basically the idea is that she wants 1) the push for inspections to clearly fail, and 2) getting a u.n. resolution authorising the invasion, before any military action
further says that she thinks this vote will make an invasion less likely.

Elliot Lee Richardson (July 20, 1920 – December 31, 1999) was an American lawyer and politician who was a member of the cabinet of Presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford. He was a prominent figure in the Watergate Scandal, having refused an order from Nixon to fire special prosecutor Archibald Cox.

yeah, i know guys. at the time, i thought they would only find the poison gas that we sold to him, and obviously that alone wouldn't justify invading. if i knew that, why did all those people in congress not know that?
BTW here is a link to the transcription of the speech
if you read the speech carefully, you see that she is very clear that a unilateral invasion of iraq by the united states without widespread international approval for it would be a Very Bad Idea. having said that, the scenario she envisions is a vigorous push for complete inspections, and failing that a push for a u.n. authorization to use force
so, i agree - if you take her words at face value, she was more stupid and naive than any of us. point taken
but she never voted for what we got - a virtually unilateral invasion of iraq without doing everything possible to get full inspections. the u.n. was not about to authorise invasion since bush did not nearly do everything called for in the resolution that hillary voted for, in regards to inspections
laborious, but i think it is worth it to put a fine point on it
