i did speak with some nonblogging types about it afterwards, people who watched it. the dems i spoke to weren't so happy; they felt obama didn't speak clearly on the issues that concern them most, and that he made a mistake agreeing with mccain or saying "you're right" or whatever it was he said. i told them, "this debate wasn't aimed at you," and the polling i've seen among "independent" voters seems to back that up. obama did very well with them, which i assume was the true target.

I think people really are missing the point about McCain's failure to look at Obama. McCain was afraid of Obama. It was really clear--look at how much McCain blinked in the first half hour. I study monkey behavior--low ranking monkeys don't look at high ranking monkeys. In a physical, instinctive sense, Obama owned McCain tonight and I think the instant polling reflects that.
I listened to it on radio as well, and I thought Obama sucked -- i.e., did the standard Dem wuss act.
Apparently, I had a real Kennedy-Nixon reaction, since the prevailing wisdom seems to be that Obama did what he had to do, McCain came off badly, and that Obama not only won but cemented his position as front runner.
So what do I know?

McCain and the love of the Mother Land Vietnam War era nostalgia whereby dedication to the “the mother land” is the real act of socialism that was pitted against Americans, who were told to fight without cause for a lied about war. Vietnam was the soul of tyranny, absent the truth and democracy. Pretty much, that is the way Iraq is too. McCain can’t leave the Vietnam War era and learned nothing from it.

Talking about whether or not McCain looked at Obama is a pretty dumb way to judge an election. But on the other hand, after sitting through the debate Gore lost for sighing too much, I'm happy to see the shoe on the other foot. Expect to see McCain staring at him next time as he overcompensates.

I'm curious to see whether the late-night comics pick up on McCain's refusal to look at Obama. It seems like the kind of thing that could become a real liability for McCain among people who didn't necessarily watch the debate, but are interested in such (arguably) telling indications of "character."
