GravatarThis “bail out” of Fanny and Freddie will consist of the major investment banks shifting to their own books at bargain prices the GSE’s assets that still retain value while at the same time they transfer over to the GSE’s all their own toxic paper. In other words the taxpayers will be bailing out both Fanny and Freddie and the major investment banks.

So let’s talk about the immorality of those “Eastern elites”. Now mind you, Mitt Romney calling out the Eastern elites is like Albert Einstein complaining about Jewish Intellectuals. But it will be interesting to see if either major party will be commenting on this taxpayer swindle of the millennium by the real Eastern elites. Or are we just going to be covered for the coming weeks by the Palin smokescreen while the US taxpayer takes it up the ass.

GravatarFear & Intimidation in Alaska:

“The GOP is kind of like organized crime up here,” an insurance agent in Anchorage who knows the Palin family, explained. “It’s corrupt and arrogant. They’re all rich because they do private sweetheart deals with the oil companies, and they can destroy anyone. And they will, if they have to.”

GravatarIf the election remains close, the next president could very well be picked by what Chris Lehane, a Democratic strategist, calls “Wal-Mart Moms” — white working women with children living in the exurbs and in rural parts of battleground states, who may make up a swing sliver of the electorate.

Can a woman be a "Wal-Mart Mom" a "Hockey Mom" a "Soccer Mom" and a "Security Mom" all at the same time?

Seems like a lot to load on somebody's shoulders.

Gravatar"Sambo beat the bitch." -- Sarah Palin's Greatest Hit.

GravatarSo, let me get this real straight, the nominal nominee of the great American political party, the Republicans, was put in front of an image of a high school his campaign mistook for the Walter Reed Army Medical Center. GravatarQ I'm sorry, one more question on those economic growth numbers or the job loss numbers -- you did point to productivity being higher, but isn't that a two-edged sword in that sometimes you accomplish higher productivity by needing less workers to do more work?

MS. PERINO: You know what, Paula, as I said, when it comes to economics, what I can do is point you to the numbers, which is that productivity was at 3.4 percent, which was considered a good number by the economists that look at this from our perspective.

Gravatarwhich was considered a good number by the economists that look at this from our perspective.

The problem with this is that workers displaced by productivity innovations are supposed to be able to compete with their former employer, thus keeping prices down relative to productivity.

GravatarUm, this is sorta big.

In fact, the jet did not sell on eBay. It was sold to a businessman from Valdez named Larry Reynolds, who paid $2.1 million for the plane -- shy of the $2.7 million purchase price -- according to news reports at the time. Reynolds contributed to Palin's campaign in 2006.

GravatarYou know WHY I worry...because even people like my intelligent, doctor brother-in-law cannot wrap their heads around that it's not whether Palin did or did not lie/misrepresent the JET story...it's that JOHN McSHAME went before a rally and said she's sold it on E-Bay and made a profit (demeaning her REPUG predecessor on the way) and then sold it with his creepy squint giggle...it's about what Joe Biden's REALLY, REALLY good friend has become...so demented over his ambition to become president that ANYTHING GOES...(gee, weren't folks all over THE CLINTONS for their raw ambition - but we love it in the POW)

Gravatarnext, can we nationalize healthcare?

michael moore made a good point last night - obama's plan is still lacking in that it leaves for-proft insurance in charge. otoh, conyers and kucinich and others in congress are working on true universal single payer, and if a strong dem majority passes it, a first term dem pres will NEVER veto it.

this, plus the supreme court, are reasons enough for progressives to enthusiastically support the obama/biden ticket.

GravatarYou must admit, there are a sizable few here.

GravatarMore zombie lies: McCain was a fighter pilot.

John McCain flew A-4 Skyhawks almost exclusively for his entire military career. the A-4 is a light bomber aircraft, also known as the “Tinkertoy Bomber”. This is what he was in when there was the accident on the USS Forrestal and this is the kind of plane he was flying when he was shot down and subsequently captured.

These are not “fighter planes”, they are bombers. And John McCain was a “bomber pilot” not a fighter pilot.

A few days after the Forrestal tragedy, a shaken McCain told a New York Times reporter in Saigon: "Now that I've seen what the bombs and the napalm did to the people on our ship, I'm not so sure that I want to drop any more of that stuff on North Vietnam."

Yet he did.

"I am a war criminal," McCain said on "60 Minutes" in 1997. "I bombed innocent women and children."

GravatarSold a State jet at a loss. That's our Sarah.

GravatarCorporate jets are in great demand, the next GulfStream has a years-long waiting list, so she probably could have gotten a better price if she had tried -- which she didn't.

GravatarIt's still not clear whether they'll add the $5 trillion in mortgage debt to the public debt.

From what I've been reading, they won't be able to sell it to the Chinese....

That leaves the Russians and the Saudis.

Good luck there.

But, if they put even a nickel towards bailing out the preferred stockholders and leaving the taxpayers holding the bag, I hope someone rolls up the guillotines onto the White House lawn, just to let `em know the extent of the public's displeasure....

GravatarThe sale of the plane was not at a loss if you factor the depreciation, you know.

ebay.

another pointless stunt disguised as good policy.

GravatarWill GM be next?

One might also ask if Boeing will be next.

My opinion is that it's more likely we'd see a Raygun-style pressuring of the union in this case, on the grounds of nashunal suhcurity, than outright nationalization. (You may recall, there is no McDonnell Douglas or Rockwell anymore, they got absorbed into the Boeing borg.)

Gravatarowed more on it than got back selling it? sounds like Arbusto, Mark III

GravatarSo it wasn't really a lie to say she made a profit.

It is so completely laughable to offer this up as an accomplishment. Locally it was a symbolic political statement against a former administration, I'll accept that.

Gravatardo corporate jets depreciate 22% in one year? inquiring minds want to know.

Probably not.  More importantly, that jet was used to transport prisoners to - ta-da! - Arizona, where the Alaskan govt has an overflow punishment center.  The cost of transport was significantly less using that jet than it is now, using the Marshall's transport.  Sooooooo, basically showboating and false economy, all the way down the line.

It was an older building. Some speculation is that it started on the 2nd floor in the air conditioning unit.

It just freaks me out. A couple of years ago, a bar right next to the building burned down, too.

Gravatarto be fair, palin was very careful not to say she sold the plane on ebay. she said she "put it on ebay" which is true. and i never heard her claim she made a profit (maybe she did, but i didn't hear it)

it was grandpa mcthuselah (who doesn't knoe what ebay is) that said she sold it there at a profit. i wonder if palin cringed when he added that line.

GravatarMy opinion is that it's more likely we'd see a Raygun-style pressuring of the union in this case, on the grounds of nashunal suhcurity, than outright nationalization. (You may recall, there is no McDonnell Douglas or Rockwell anymore, they got absorbed into the Boeing borg.)

yes, I want pissed off union guys, or better yet non-union guys, building the planes I fly on. Nothing gives me more security than that.

GravatarAnother fact about the plane. It wasn't just for the governor. The state used it to fly prisoners out of state. Palin said she would buy Public Safety another plane for that.

One explanation might be the explosion in fuel costs. I understand that some airlines are mothballing and parking their MD-80s in favor of 747s, since the MD-80s are now just too expensive to fly with their shitty gas mileage.

Something similar could be going on here is she had a real fuel hog on her hands.

melior

I can't think of anyone replacing MD-80s (a pretty small aircraft with 3-2 seating) with 747s (much bigger, obviously).

And 747s get pretty shitty gas mileage.

Most airlines are parking both when they can in favor of 757s, 767, 777s, and later Airbus.

GravatarUnited is eliminating 747s on domestic routes entirely. A 767 costs way less to fly.

GravatarYou'll need a long piece of paper to write down all the "fucking idiots" that will accept that rationale - good to know though that she will be MISTAKE FREE in just two weeks...too bad that couldn't have worked for "W"...

GravatarAlso, the state has a fleet of small aircraft available for the governor's use. This one was actually useful for the prisoner transfers.

GravatarThose are paste jewels, I'd wager. Big, gaudy, tacky, sparkly..... and very republican. They'd go well with a Nixonian cloth coat.

Gravatar And Vicki is (nearly) always right.

Adam, I don't know about that, but one thing about me, when I'm wrong or post information that isn't entirely accurate, I always try to correct it ASAP. I'd rather apologize and get it right than have a reputation as an uninformed ass.

There's so much info out there that it's sometimes hard to discern the integrity of the source.

GravatarAs far as I know, NAFTA makes it illegal to nationalize a private company.
passerby

is this true? and the 5 trillion previously mentioned, part of the national debt? Were there better options?

I'm Canadian and naturally okay with massive monopolies being privatized - to the benefit of the many of course

GravatarSome environments are more abusive than others. I am sure the Hawaii Airlines stewardess who got sucked out of a plane probably has an opinion on this.

Gravatarclips of bush 2000 campaign promises almost word for word matching mccain 2008 promises.

it was tres funny, and should be an obama ad.

The Republican Party has been selling the same turd since AT LEAST 1980. Against all wisdom, they keep polishing it, and it keeps working.

GravatarNo wonder the neighborhood smells like smoke this morning.

I must have slept like a log, I didn't hear a thing.

GravatarEach Alaskan is getting a just-over $2,000 oil royalty check this year -- you know, like it was supposed to work for the Iraqis, but didn't.
plantsman | 09.06.08 - 10:53 am | #

no, that is more like each BASRAN getting a royalty check.

b/c the rest of this country is paying into the windfall taxes and getting squat back. hey, it's alaska's oil, not ours!

Gravataralso, according to cnn (who checked w/ the broker) the jet was valued at 2.8mill and sold for 2.1mill

It really appears that the entire proffered narrative defining Sarah Palin is a lie, and that everything about Obama that has and will come out of her mouth is a Damned Lie. And she thinks that she is immune from being called on this utterly reprehensible, cynical strategy because any attempt to expose it will be denounced as rank sexism by her and an army of surrogates. In short, she is opening up on us with an A-K and then trying to duck behind her own skirts. We can't let her do it, and if the media lets her do it, they will be personally responsible for the collapse of human civilization.

GravatarU6 owls!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hell, let organize those fucks. I propose an Obama benefit in Amman at $2,000 a person, with a really decent Elvis impersonator.

GravatarHere's one I just made up --

I'd start calling her Nanooky, but that would be sexist and immature.
Then again, she does have 5 kids...

GravatarSnow, he only looks that way to US...those syncophants at the convention and around MERICA all see a brave, POW who is a "Mavrick" and has chosen a BABE to be our next VP...you know like everyone wanted to have a beer with "W"...I'm imagining what they's like to do with SCARAH (sorry, I love that)....at least she'll be mistake free in that area...

GravatarOkay! A good friend of ours has showed up. Maybe now we can play.

We are not sure if we need a troll help line but we welcome trool help line's friendship. We will accept his/hers help.

If it isn't, I will be very disappointed.

Vicki, Who ♥ Al Gore

And I would guess that like me, you spend some time talking to co-workers and other people outside the reality based community.

It's dirty work, and frightening, which is why I think a fair number of the people here have closed up into affinity groups of like-minds.

But they make the mistake of thinking that's all there is.

To my mind, the thing that could beat McCain is the economy, or his own health. Palin doesn't seem to be hurting him much, and is generating a lot of enthusiasm among the millions of true believers, whose votes he also needs.

GravatarIf we are going to have a troll help line I would think we would need someone to lead it that knows how to spell troll.
Number 7 troll

You obviously are not counting on the fact that it is a voluntary public service type of job. You only get what you pay for...

Quit picking on our union president. We are supposed to stick together, not fight in front of the audience.

GravatarAirplanes, in general, do not wear out like cars and boats because the environment they operate in (mid-air) is not particularly abusive.

If followed FAA mandated maintenance procedures also make planes last a long time.

If you take care of an automobile that way, you'll get much longer product life. Assuming of course you don't live in the rust belt where salt or other corrosive chemicals is used on the roads.

GravatarIf we are going to have a troll help line I would think we would need someone to lead it that knows how to spell troll.

That could be the reason why not to many people use the service.

GravatarI just don’t get the republican philosophy. They are always harping about big government, getting the government “off our backs” (and into the bathtub), “let the markets work”, etc. But it seems like every de-regulation leads to eventual bigger government – which of course is less efficient and more costly then before de-regulation. They wanted de-regulation on Wall Street, which resulted in massive bailouts (of the rich). They wanted de-regulation of the mortgage industry, which is now wrecking our economy and growing government. They wanted to privatize parts of the government, and we get Halliburton. They don’t want universal health care, and taxpayers end up footing the emergency room bills. I’ve always thought that you really don’t have to be “liberal” to be a liberal – you might just be interested in long-term cost effectiveness.

GravatarGM has a presence in China and make cars there.

The mortgage guys not so much.

GravatarWho needs a soveeign wealth fund when you have the US Treasury?
