At the moment, 50 million households have mortgages. If home prices drop 15%, it would put 21% of these mortgages, or $2.6 trillion, underwater.
In the old days, when people bought houses as a (gasp!) residence and not just an investment, this wasn't the worst thing ever because if you aren't planning to sell immediately, you can just ride it out and wait for the market to improve. But with so many people sitting with ARMs and looking to sell in the next two years, that number looks pretty bad.

A solution to McCain's Panama problem, with Obama's support : A solution to McCain's Panama problem, with Obama's support
On Thursday, the New York Times took up the question of whether John McCain, the presumptive Republican nominee, is even eligible for the presidency. The Constitution specifies that "No person except a natural born citizen... shall be eligible to the office of President." This has been popularly (but never legally) interpreted as meaning that only those persons actually born in the United States were eligible. But McCain wasn't born here; he was born in the Panama Canal Zone, as his father, serving in the Navy, was stationed there at the time.
There might not have ever been much of a controversy over the issue, but one Senator has taken steps to ensure that McCain will indeed be eligible. And no, the Senator in question isn't a Republican trying to ensure the health of their party -- it's Missouri Democrat Claire McCaskill, a prominent backer of Barack Obama. McCaskill has introduced the "Children of Military Families Natural Born Citizen Act" into the Senate. McCaskill's legislation, which she wrote by hand on a notepad after reading the Times article, specifies a new part of the definition of "natural born citizen," which, if the bill passes, will now include "any person born to any citizen of the United States while serving in the active or reserve components of the United States Armed Forces."
Obama himself is now co-sponsoring the bill.

Unless they can quickly recapitalize, banks are likely to cut back their lending to consumers and businesses by more than $1 trillion, cutting economic growth by more than a percentage point over the next 12 months.
I think I saw yesterday that mortgage rates are going up, not down, even though the Fed keeps cutting rates. Oddly, the interest banks pay does keep going down with the Fed cuts. Heads they win, tails, we lose.

And in a tumultuous market, the rogue elephants will rampage through the underbrush, trampling everything underfoot:
A rogue trader operating from a Memphis office made huge unauthorized trades in Chicago wheat futures on a day of epic volatility, costing the city's highest-volume commodities brokerage $141.5 million, the firm said Thursday.
MF Global, a futures firm incorporated in Bermuda with a major presence at the Chicago Board of Trade and Chicago Mercantile Exchange, said that it fired Evan B. Dooley, who had worked on commission in the firm's Memphis branch since November 2005. The firm, which has headquarters in New York, assured investors that the mechanism allowing Dooley to stake a hazardous bet in his personal account with company money had been corrected.
The acknowledgment represents an enormous blow to MF Global, whose financial position and stock price were rocked. The company also was put into the embarrassing position of admitting a catastrophic breach of the internal trading controls designed to protect the integrity of it far-flung operations. The $2.54 billion brokerage said it was not financially imperiled.

After the call, the Clinton campaign e-mailed a memo entitled, "Obama Must-Wins": "The media has anointed Barack Obama the presumptive nominee and he's playing the part. With an eleven-state winning streak coming out of February, Senator Obama is riding a surge of momentum that has enabled him to pour unprecedented resources into Texas, Ohio, Rhode Island and Vermont. ... Senator Obama has campaigned hard in these states. He has spent time meeting editorial boards, courting endorsers, holding rallies, and - of course - making speeches. If he cannot win all of these states with all this effort, there's a problem."

yesterday's presser:
Q If I could get back to the economy. The GDP numbers today show that our economy is increasingly relying on U.S. exports to keep growing. How important is a competitive dollar in keeping U.S. exports strong?
THE PRESIDENT: We believe in a strong dollar policy, and we believe that -- and I believe that our economy has got the fundamentals in place for us to be a -- is to grow and continue growing more robustly, hopefully, than we're growing now. And the dollar, the value of the dollar will be reflected in the ability for our economy to be -- to grow economically. And so we're still for a strong dollar.

There was a fucking reason for all those New Deal regulations that Reagan, Bush 41, and Gingrich were so eager to repeal.
But they were all either too stupid, or too greedy, to ponder for a second that the regulations were not put in place for shits and grins, or to "punish" "entrepreneurs".

Feb. 29 (Bloomberg) -- Ambac Financial Group Inc. was given more time to raise capital by Moody's Investors Service, which said the bond insurer may get enough money to justify an Aaa rating.
Ambac, in talks with banks and private-equity firms to raise at least $3 billion, would probably meet Moody's capital target if it is successful, the ratings company said today in a statement. New York-based Moody's said it is continuing its six- week review of Ambac pending an agreement.
``Ambac is actively pursuing capital strengthening activities that, if successful, are expected to result in the company meeting Moody's current estimate of the Aaa target level,'' Moody's analyst Jack Dorer said in a report.

Prolific Spammer's Conviction Upheld
By LARRY O'DELL
1:18 PM CST, February 29, 2008
RICHMOND, Va.
A divided Virginia Supreme Court affirmed the nation's first felony conviction for illegal spamming on Friday, ruling that Virginia's anti-spamming law does not violate free-speech rights.
Jeremy Jaynes of Raleigh, N.C., considered among the world's top 10 spammers in 2003, was convicted of massive distribution of junk e-mail and sentenced to nine years in prison.
Almost all 50 states have anti-spamming laws. In the 4-3 ruling, the court rejected Jaynes' claim that the state law violates both the First Amendment and the interstate commerce clause of the U.S. Constitution.
"This is a historic victory in the fight against online crime," state Attorney General Bob McDonnell said in a written statement. "Spam not only clogs e-mail inboxes and destroys productivity; it also defrauds citizens and threatens the online revolution that is so critical to Virginia's economic prosperity."
Justice Elizabeth Lacy wrote in a dissent that the law is "unconstitutionally overbroad on its face because it prohibits the anonymous transmission of all unsolicited bulk e-mail including those containing political, religious or other speech protected by the First Amendment to the United States Constitution."

``Ambac is actively pursuing capital strengthening activities that, if successful, are expected to result in the company meeting Moody's current estimate of the Aaa target level,'' Moody's analyst Jack Dorer said in a report.
So the funds that currently have money tied up in Ambac will just give it some more money to make sure that it doesn't lose it's Aaa which would cause them to lose their money?

but what does it do for babies that are half american soldier spawn, have foreign national?
The US has repeatedly ignored this aspect of our military adventurism. The French, for example, granted French citizenship to the unintended consequences of their war to retain Indochina, while the US has basically said "tough shit, Charlie" to Amerasian kids born in SE Asia in the 60's and 70's.
This attitude extends to all sorts of GI fathered kids in Germany and Korea, and I'm sure we'll eventually have the same problem in Iraq.

i should go compile all of his comments on this.
first, wasn't it just a little 'froth' in the housing market;
then, he was sooooo surprised and hadn't anticipated that shovelling money out the door could lead to bad loans;
then, the nyt printed the story how he was warned by fed directors in 2005 about this impending meltdown and ignored that advice.
