Every day, I pass a few guys on the way to work holding signs that say that they're homeless, etc. Would it be terrible for me to cook the potatoes, wrap them in aluminum foil, and give them to these guys? I figure they may not have a way to cook them, themselves. Am I nuts?

Bank to try radical new procedure called "bankruptcy"
WSJ -- Earlier Wednesday, the White House said President Obama has been briefed on CIT's situation but deferred questions about the troubled lender's potential government-aid package to the Treasury Department.
The financial position at CIT, a lender to almost a million small and midsized businesses, has weakened in recent days and government officials had come under increasing pressure to resolve the looming crisis. News over the weekend the company had hired bankruptcy lawyers to help prepare for a possible bankruptcy filing prompted nervous investors to draw down on credit lines and the company's bonds and shares slumped. People familiar with the matter told The Wall Street Journal the drawdowns were about $500 million on Monday, but by Tuesday had risen to around $750 million.

I got a tip from a friend Andrew about a sale of assets by Wells Fargo (WFC) which raises a number of interesting questions. He sent me the following 14 July article from the Milwaukee Business Journal.
Wells Fargo sold $600 million in mostly non-performing subprime loans to Irvine, Calif.-based Arch Bay Capital, National Mortgage News reported, citing sources familiar with the sale.
The industry publication said the loans sold for 35 cents on the dollar, about double what most hedge funds were offering.

i was thinking of it in regard to wingnut constitutional arguments that postulate that government isn't allowed to do such and such (usually involving the dreaded 'empathy') because it is not specifically stated as a duty of the government in the constitution, and also in regard to the whole issue of so-called "newly invented rights that don't exist in the constitution". in both cases, the unspoken premise is that if it isn't specifically allowed, it's forbidden
For years and years and years Dems have been harping that Bush didn't get Bin Laden. And now we know why. Dems pulled the plug on the most plausible and effective plans to kill him.

Professor Wagstaff
reading some of the requests for money from the school would likely kill him off, so perhaps they should try that.

WTF
Obama birther claims soldier’s revoked orders will have ‘disastrous’ ‘consequences’ for the U.S. military.
The reserve soldier who argued he should not have to go to Afghanistan because of far-fetched claims that President Obama is not legally eligible to be commander-in-chief has had his deployment orders revoked. Army Maj. Stefan Frederick Cook filed a request with the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Georgia on July 8 seeking a temporary restraining order and status as a conscientious objector because he believes Obama is not a natural born citizen. Though the military has refused to say why the order was revoked, Cook’s lawyer, renowned Obama conspiracy theorist Orly Taitz, was spinning it as a victory. “They have no cards to play with,” Taitz gleefully told Military.com:
“Can you imagine what are the consequences? This is disastrous” for the administration, she said. “We’ll have no military. Because anytime any Soldier, any Sailor, any Airman does not want to follow any orders, all he has to do is call an attorney and say ‘I don’t want to follow this order because I question the legitimacy of the commander in chief.’ “
Cook, an Individual Mobilization Augmentee, had volunteered for a year’s deployment to Afghanistan on May 8 and his orders were issued June 9. But all is not over for Cook or Taitz. A hearing on Cook’s requests will take place Thursday in the Columbus, Georgia federal court.

Thought so:
"In fact, Burger did actually defeat Mason twice on the television series: once in "The Case of the Terrified Typist" and again in "The Case of the Deadly Verdict". In addition, in "The Case of the Shoplifter's Shoe", Burger figured out the true culprit (after some nudging in the right direction by Mason). In the TV series, the closest Burger gets to having Perry Mason "arrested" is when he has Mason cited for causing a trash fire within city limits (part of Mason's plan to free an innocent client)."

I may have done something a little outre concerning the federal hiring system. I emailed the HR people about this Gud Job - for the third time - but this time saying that I believed the agency was allowing the cert to expire and protesting it. Asking that they please find out what is going on (with the implication that since the agency is a new one and has no experience in HR since they're actually using another agency's HR department it could merely be agency incompetence) and let me know. The previous times the HR people have replied the next day - nothing today. I've either really ticked them off or they're doing something. Unbelievably tiresome.

Most laws, and I apologize to my ConLaw prof for not remembering if this is true of the Constitution, have a "necessary and proper" clause. We also have a 14th Amendment.
Hecate, Runnymeade Conspirator
necessary and proper to implement the enumerated powers
among the Enumerated Powers:
"To lay and collect taxes, duties, imposts and excises, to pay the debts and provide for the common defence and general welfare of the United States"
...the general welfare language in the Taxing and Spending Clause related only to "matters of national, as distinguished from local, welfare". Congress continues to make expansive use of the Taxing and Spending Clause; for instance, the social security program is authorized under the Taxing and Spending Clause
tell that to your wingnut relatives when they tell you the consitution does not allow the federal gvt to do anything beyond run the army and foreign policy
Rather check my book on Phrenology.

If they're waiting for the cert to expire in order to push me off the list I really want them stopped. It's an old federal trick that I've fallen prey to more than once and it's tacky. They write a job tailored for one person and that person ends up at the bottom of the list and they can't 'reach' him. It's not fair and it's not ethical and we're not still governed by the Shrubbery. I don't mind failure but I really do dislike cheating.

"Cook, an Individual Mobilization Augmentee, had volunteered for a year’s deployment to Afghanistan on May 8 and his orders were issued June 9."
cook got fired from his job today.
"As it turns out, Maj. Cook was a reservist, employed in civilian life by a DOD contractor, Simtech, Inc. We are all aware that his military command has revoked his deployment orders, telling him that he's not wanted anymore. But that's not all. Today (or yesterday, it's hard to tell on the Freeper and WingNutDaily sites), Maj. Cook was informed that the DOD has also advised Simtech that he is no longer welcome at the DOD facility where Simtech was performing services, and as a result, Simtech doesn't have a job for Maj. Cook anymore."
maybe we can take it over to Satriale's and put it through the grinder.

Fine. My challenge to folks here obsessed with feeding trolls is this. Turn off your gravatar and your nym and respond 'anonymously'. If it's REALLY about whacking the troll it shouldn't matter who does the whacking.
My theory is that it's more about the troll baiters wanting to draw attention to themselves or being too thin skinned when it gets personal. "Look at me, I sure outsmarted (troll name here) and got the last word".
My 2 cents.

So Wells Fargo is offering to re-fi my mortgage with it at a rate .75 lower than my current rate at no charge. I dunno why but it seems like a good deal to me. I wonder if they are re-packaging my new mortgage as something newer and improved-er.
