All thanks to the Neoliberal economic policies instituted by both Dems and Repukes over the past 28yrs.
One of the requirements of 3rd World nations who borrow from the IMF or World Bank is that they must follow stringent rules laid down by the economic powers, primarily the US. So Haiti was once self sufficient in rice production, but after debt restructuring, they were forced to import US rice at the expense of their own crops suffering. This is the natural outgrowth of these free market policies.

During recent millennia of relatively stable climate, civilization became established and populations have grown rapidly. In the next 50 years, even the lower limit of impending climate change—an additional global mean warming of 1°C above the last decade—is far beyond the range of climate variability experienced during the past thousand years and poses global problems in planning for and adapting to it. Warming greater than 2°C above 19th century levels is projected to be disruptive, reducing global agricultural productivity, causing widespread loss of biodiversity, and—if sustained over centuries—melting much of the Greenland ice sheet with ensuing rise in sea level of several meters. If this 2°C warming is to be avoided, then our net annual emissions of CO2 must be reduced by more than 50 percent within this century. With such projections, there are many sources of scientific uncertainty, but none are known that could make the impact of climate change inconsequential. Given the uncertainty in climate projections, there can be surprises that may cause more dramatic disruptions than anticipated from the most probable model projections.
With climate change, as with ozone depletion, the human footprint on Earth is apparent. The cause of disruptive climate change, unlike ozone depletion, is tied to energy use and runs through modern society. Solutions will necessarily involve all aspects of society. Mitigation strategies and adaptation responses will call for collaborations across science, technology, industry, and government. Members of the AGU, as part of the scientific community, collectively have special responsibilities: to pursue research needed to understand it; to educate the public on the causes, risks, and hazards; and to communicate clearly and objectively with those who can implement policies to shape future climate.

There's an element of that, obviously. I think in some ways that it's even sicker than that, though...I think that on a certain level people want it to happen, either as a punishment or simply as a spectacle.
That said, I've been following this stuff for a couple decades, and the amount of change I've seen in the last few years is pretty amazing. People are catching on and making an effort on a scale I've never seen.

There's going to be a Spirit movie? That could be great -- I loved Eisner!
Actually, the previews for the Ironman movie look good -- certainly potential there (& Downey may be a junkie, but he is a hell of an actor) -- I had the first Ironman comic (he used to be bulky & gray -- or steel colored if you prefer)

There was a LTE in This Old House magazine from someone who was whining about being beat about the head with the green stuff. Which is too fucking bad, because people are beginning to realize that something is happening. They can tell their summers are hotter, etc.

Ya know...if you're gonna lie in order to get grants, the best thing to do as an organization is to claim that the science isn't settled.
dont tell dwd, the other day i was saying the celts were going to win the east, and he was all bitter about the pistons getting no respect.

GWPDA, I'll have to look up the copper craftsman. I don't know If I'd want a copper sink, though if he's working copper, he might also be willing to make other items, such as an exhaust hood. Right now I've been thinking of patio space, and one thing I'd like is an outdoor but covered and screened patio kitchen. I'd still want the stove top to have an exhaust system. Stir fry can be stinky and eye burning if you are frying a chili-garlic herb flavoring for the rest of the dish.

there's really nothing conclusive or obvious about the rapture in the bible.
just a couple phrases they decided to talke literally and build an entire earth-shattering one-in-a-million- years event.
