"Please take pity on me because I had to put up with Bob for all these years."

GravatarOT: Lebanon's western-backed government was reeling yesterday after Hizbullah guerrillas seized control of Muslim west Beirut in a significant victory for the Iran-supported Shia movement.

Security sources said at least 11 people had been killed and 30 wounded in three days of battles between pro-government forces and fighters loyal to Hizbullah, in the worst internal clashes since the end of the 15-year civil war in 1990.

The Hizbullah takeover - described by some as a coup and others as a "show of force" - broke months of political deadlock that reflects Lebanon's deep internal divisions and the ambitions of neighbours such as Syria and Israel, as well as Iran, Saudi Arabia and the US. But, as an uneasy calm returned to Beirut yesterday, it was unclear what the change would mean.

The political situation in Lebanon has been paralysed for months, with government and opposition at odds over the choice of a new president. "These events will make it harder to agree on that," said Nadim Shehadi, an analyst at Chatham House, London. "Hizbullah enjoys a lot of legitimacy as the group that led resistance to Israel. Now it has shown another face."

Vito apparently told his gummar that he was separated from his wife. Turns out that wasn't true. Meanwhile, Vito's wife knew he had a roving eye, but didn't know other parts of him were roving, and certainly not to the point where they were producing offspring.

And there's also this from the Daily News:

Fossella banded together last month with a group of lawmakers who demanded HBO apologize for what they called an "offensive anti-Catholic rant" by "Real Time" host Bill Maher. Fossella took HBO to task for "insulting the Pope, mocking the Catholic religion and Catholics."

GravatarOT: It is being billed as a "low-key" event, which is perhaps odd for a wedding with 200 guests, 14 quasi-bridesmaids, a bride's dress made by a top New York designer and a limestone altar carved for the occasion in the shape of a giant cross. But then this is Texas, where nothing is done in half-measures.

Today, a little after sundown to allow for the dissipation of the oppressive mid-day heat, George Bush's daughter Jenna will become the 23rd child of a serving president to be married. But unlike the splendour, say, of Alice Lee Roosevelt's 1906 nuptials in the White House that were attended by foreign heads of state and swept the groundbreaking deal of the Panama Canal off the front pages, this will be a thoroughly private affair.

When President Nixon's daughter Tricia became the last incumbent's child to marry at the White House in 1971 there were 600 reporters present. Today, by contrast, there will be no cameras allowed inside the 1,600-acre (650-hectare) Bush family ranch in Crawford, Texas.

Maybe that's fitting for a woman who begged her father not to run for the presidency in 2000 on the grounds it would change her life.

GravatarThe Iraqi Army has launched a major operation in the northern city of Mosul against al-Qaeda and its allies.

Around 10,000 Sunni tribesmen from Mosul who are loyal to the government are taking part in the operation with an armoured brigade of Iraqi troops.

Reinforcements are due to move into the area in the coming days for what is being called Operation Lion's Roar.

A curfew is already in effect in the city and judges have issued a number of arrest warrants for al-Qaeda leaders.

Over the past year al-Qaeda has lost its foothold in western Iraq and the northern city of Mosul is viewed as its last urban stronghold.

GravatarBAQUBA, May 9, 2008 (IPS) - Water supply is drying out in what was once the agriculturally rich Diyala province north of Baghdad. Baquba, the capital city of Diyala, is now running out of water both for drinking and for irrigation.

Water supply has been hit by power failures. The central pumping station has been running short of electricity supply over the last two years.

The pumping station is located between two districts in conflict -- Hwaider, which is predominantly Shia, and Jupenat, mostly Sunni. For two years now, fighting between Sunnis and Shias here has led to reduced water supply.

"The Diyala river passes by the two villages before the pumping station," resident Zuhair Mahmood told IPS. "They try to change its stream to deprive the other of water for irrigating their farms. The diversions mean relatively little water can reach the station."

Often, Mahmood added, "farmers irrigate their farms by setting up pumps on the banks of the river, which further contributes to reduced supply to the station."

Some farmers have demanded that the pumping station be supplied directly from the Diyala river upstream of the conflict area.

Gravatarmimi, Here it is.

Pro-breeding policy in France carries particular symbolic value. The carte famille nombreuse was created in 1921, after the heavy population losses of the first world war. In 1920 the “Medal of the French Family” was devised—and still exists today—with a special gold medal to honour women who had eight or more children. In more recent times, France has put in place a generous system of crèche places, all-day nursery schools, family allowances and income-tax deductions for big families. Produce six offspring nowadays, and the SNCF discount reaches 75%.

All this has bred results. France now has the highest fertility rate in the European Union...

The PKK, which is seeking autonomy for Kurds in south-eastern Turkey, is designated as a terrorist organisation by Turkey, the US and EU.

More than 30,000 people have been killed since the group began its armed campaign in 1984.

More French people means my high school French may be worth the trouble.

GravatarThe Roman Catholic Church, for centuries a bastion of Latin usage, has given the ancient tongue a 21st Century boost by launching a website in Latin.

The Vatican website now has a section - Sancta Sedes (Holy See) - with Latin papal texts and religious works.

Pope Benedict XVI is an advocate of Latin, allowing Mass in the language.

But when a papal decree was issued only in Latin by mistake last June, there was confusion until the Vatican press office put out an Italian version.

"It caused a bit of panic for my colleagues who had no schooling in Latin," said the BBC's Rome correspondent David Willey, "until the official translation finally emerged."

The Vatican website already has sections in English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish.

GravatarI think one of the reviewers at Box Office, where I'm now toiling, may be nuts.

From a review of SPEED RACER.

Many viewers will find the barely concealed sexual subtext entertaining, some will find it unwholesome, and it will add to a general sense of unease in others. You certainly emerge mindful that cars are to adolescent male desire what horses are to tween girls. A scene in which Speed and Trixie (Christina Ricci) are parked at Inspiration Point goes beyond coy innuendo and almost into kinky camp. Their relationship is overshadowed by the movie’s not-so-latent homoeroticism however. Racer X (Matthew Fox) might as well be wearing seat-less chaps and wielding a whip, ready to make his admiring protégé Speed submit. (A line about ripping a rival driver a new tail pipe is another obvious example.) Doubts about Racer X’s identity raise the specter of incest, as does the “you take my breath away” encouragement Mom Racer (Susan Sarandon) gives Speed....

The arousal gauge is purposefully shattered during the movie’s climax, which amounts to a protracted communal orgasm complete with fireworks. When Speed wins the Grand Prix, everybody’s world is rocked. If smoking weren’t a screen no-no, the checkered flag would be the cue to light up a post-coital cigarette and wash it down with a gulp of frosty-cold milk. Speed’s victory bliss involves more than the triumph of integrity over greed or the affirmation of top-notch driving skills and the appeal of clean-cut jocks who resist the call of illicit desire. Because everything is on or near the surface in Speed Racer, divining the Wachowski’s intentions or searching for hidden meanings is unnecessary. Above all, they succeed in reminding us that—despite the dominant role of computers in the moviemaking process—film is still a tactile medium and even PG-rated family movies are erotic at their core.

That last bit is absolutely bonkers, but trust me -- I saw the the film. It has no sexual subtext whatsoever. Hell, it barely has human beings in it...

GravatarAre most of the surprisingly numerous people on pro-Hillary blogs saying they'll vote for McCain if Obama is the nominee actually Republicans in disguise?

Or have such a large number of Democrats really flipped their wigs and joined the Naderites of 2000?

If the former, wow.

If the latter, WOW!

GravatarJust heard on CNN:

"The West Virginia Democratic Primary on the CNN ELECTION CENTER. The best political team on television brings you the critical results!"

The results are critical? Really?

GravatarFor the record, I lived in Vancouver and worked for a very large telecoms company.

In my department, there were 25 engineers - 23 Chinese, 1 person from India and me.

Some of the Chinese had been born in Canada, others had been there for only 2 weeks when they were hired.

It was in Vancouver that I got interested in learning to speak and read Chinese and in acupuncture.

The Chinese food was very good too.

Gravatar I think one of the reviewers at Box Office, where I'm now toiling, may be nuts.

Maybe they had just read this gem posted by K&Y last night.

GravatarAs Bob lay on her, his claw still clutching his pencil dick, Liddy remembered the soft murmurs of Strom as he nosed around in her crotch and spoke of "pickin' cotton'. Liddy has never given up hope that tomorrow will be another day. And this time Liddy's third nipple strategy will prevail.

GravatarBob Dole hides penis pills in his pen like the prison break d00d

GravatarThe only highly educated pot-smoking hippie I ever knew who held unabashed racist views was from West Virginia. It really is like an endemic disease there. Maybe it's the coal dust.

R.Mutt

And swear allegiance to the swastika.

GravatarI would have like Speed Racer okay, if they had turned the sound off. And trimmed about 45 minutes from the picture.

All the scenes with the kid and his chimp, anyway.

The U.S. military has, since 2001, cremated some of the remains of American service members killed in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere at a Delaware facility that also cremates pets, a practice that ended yesterday when the Pentagon banned the arrangement.

Goddamn Ron Paul supporters...

GravatarYou can't have Speed Racer without Spridle and Chim-Chim. Too bad they fucked 'em up.

GravatarSimels,

GravatarThe Smurfs are commies.

GravatarJesus sheets

GravatarI'm sure Speed Racer is better than that planned Akira live action movie will be. That is going to be death to my childhood.

Maybe you are full of shit.

GravatarI don't know much about Kay but what little I've managed to figure out is that she might well beat Liddy, but I'm not so sure we'll be able to tell the difference if she does. I think she's got Blue Dog written all over her.

Depressing. She beat the pants off my candidate, Jim Neal.

GravatarThe end of the Helmet-Haired Moron? Oh please ....

Gravatar"but it appears Liddy Dole might have a wee fight in November."

it looks like it from that poll, but once she hairsprays up and hits the rubber chicken circuit with bob dole, all bets are off.

GravatarRemarkably content-free, OT thread here.

Hagan is a DLC clone, who comes from a political family. Not very inspiring to me as a candidate, but has to be vastly better than Dole as a Senator.

Hopefully has done as well on her own campaign and fundraising as she has with the Republican's senatorial fundraising.

Gravatar" Not very inspiring to me as a candidate, but has to be vastly better than Dole as a Senator."

it's shaping up beautiuflly. make 'em defend every seat with little $ and lots of people pissed at goopers.

schweet.

GravatarI voted for Neal and was frankly shocked at how poorly he did, given his pre-primary publicity.

GravatarLiddy Dole has a reputation in North Carolina as an absentee Senator and for being in lockstep with the Bush Administration. In this informative post about Senator Dole on the BlueNC website, a good case is made that staying under the radar has helped keep her approval ratings up:
http://bluenc.com/dole-enables-b...ds- consequences

Bringing more public attention to her voting record and to how little she's done for this state during her term will help ensure she doesn't get another one.

GravatarNC is an interesting state where Obama could have a strong impact. Hagan could tap into his fund raising ability and put together a war chest to challenge Liddy's. It's especially problematic with a Repub nominee who is going to be hammered in the fall as running on a platform that's a 3rd Bush Term. That's not going to be popular, but how far will Liddy run to distance herself from a dead lame duck administration and the party's nomination that could flame out. Hard spot for her since McCain will count on taking NC as part of her base, and the RNC will expect her to support him.

I think come the fall, a lot of seats that people didn't think were in play at the start of the year will turn out to be in play.

It's one of the sad things of the Dem nomination dragging out. Attention right now could be turned to building towards a rather massive sweep not only of the White House, but also in the House and Senate. Something that when combined with 2006 would match 1980.

You hate to see such an opportunity potentially impacted by an ongoing pissing contest.

GravatarA better link to the poll

The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey in North Carolina Hagan attracting 48% of the vote statewide while Dole earns support from 47%. A month ago, Dole led Hagan by thirteen percentage points.

I have nothing against DLC clones in states like NC, where the main thing is to just get those Pubbies out of office.

But DLC clones in safe states like NY or CT or MD - that's a different story.
