I'MMA LET YOU FINISH

GravatarUgly is going to get uglier.

GravatarDoes anyone who is not seriously deluding themselves really think that we are not going to be in a real, honest to goodness recession (instead of something that just feels like one) sooner rather than later?

GravatarIt's the "Ownership Society". Remember that?

I don't hear that term too much these days, I wonder why that is.

GravatarThe Bush legacy: failed war, failed economy.

Heckuva job!

GravatarAnd, of course, the word "subprime" will be used against those messed over by the businesses who made the loans, even those who then resliced and repackaged them into things which cannot be evaluated.

It's all the fault of those damn poor folk and the DFH-influenced libs.

Can't be the fine upstanding Gordon Geckos of this economy.

GravatarOh, and those ratings agencies? Can't be their fault, either.

Just the little people and the DFH's.

GravatarSomehow this WSJ excerpt makes Bush look like a hero.

GravatarAtrios, are you here right now?
I think I got something interesting i would like to bass along.

GravatarAnd yet people were still rushing the stores at 4:00am yesterday. My dad, visiting, had CNBC on yesterday, and they actually had a guy talking about holiday spending say that if you were watching him on a flat screen TV at an electronics store you should buy that TV to do your part for the economy.

Priceless!

GravatarHeh! Pardoned that turkey.

/burp!!!

GravatarSo far the main media focus has been on how Wall Street bonuses will be down this Christmas.

Gravatar'cause nothing says sexy like subprime market lending analysis

GravatarWhy isn't 'flipping' illegal everywhere?

(it is in Minneapolis)

GravatarIf the Social Security trust fund was put into housing...

GravatarThe solution is obvious.

We must deregulate everything!!!!

Gravatarwell this news is excellent for Republicans

GravatarBig banks and investors who made subprime loans or bought securities backed by them are reporting billions of dollars in losses.

But we can't expect them to absorb any of those losses. "Personal responsibility" is only for the brown folks and the poor people, and the pregnant teen girls.

GravatarI know how Obama feels. I'm the blacksheep of our family.

GravatarCorrection to the nym! I've fallen below 1,000,000 again on the Amazon Sales Rank, and I blame the subprime mess. With housing prices falling, people just aren't ready to spend money on expensive, esoteric books anymore!

Gravatarlarry kudlow says everything is fine and dandy!

GravatarSo there's this big article on the last two FU's of the Bush junta in today's Chicago Tribune. And they talk about how tough it will be for Bush to get much done, and all the bad stuff he has to deal with, Iraq, lingering nastiness from Katrina, Congress falling to the Democrats (sorta.)

But wait, what is not even mentioned?

Correct. The economy.

I have two good friends who work for the Tribune, and it pains me that the paper occasionally seems completely disconnected from reality.

GravatarIf the economy goes tits up, it's the fault of consumers for not buying enough stuff on credit.

GravatarMorning, bats. How was everybody's holiday?

Gravatarhey, it's free market capitalism at it's best.....this is america...we are teaching the world how to live better...at least according to larry kudlow, and steve moore....two of the countries least knowledgeable people when it comes to the economy...have known kudlow for 25 years and marvel at how he lands on his feet despite a horrible track record...

GravatarI LOVE Willie Nelson:

Willie Nelson is looking to become dog's best friend. The country music star has filmed a television spot supporting an anti-dogfighting bill that is moving through the Georgia Legislature.

In the ad, Nelson looks into the camera while "Georgia on My Mind" plays in the background.

"Dogfighting is against the law in Georgia, but the laws are so weak, the beautiful state of Georgia has become a haven for dogfighters from around the country," he says.

The bill would make it a felony for anyone to sell, trade or transport dogs for the purpose of dogfighting.

Utah-based Best Friends Animal Society, a national animal welfare organization, produced the piece and asked Nelson to participate.

State Sen. Chip Rogers, the bill's author, hopes to get the spot on TV and radio around the time of the Dec. 10 sentencing for suspended Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick, who pleaded guilty to a federal dogfighting conspiracy charge.

The bill has passed the state Senate and will go before a House committee in January.

GravatarTerry C, that's awesome.

GravatarI was listening to Larry Kudlow last Saturday -- don't ask why -- and he was railing about McCain/Feingold and he actually said "I don't want the government regulating elections. Heck, I don't want the government regulating anything."

I was stunned, frankly. How do these people not die of stupidity?

Oh, and then he followed up by saying he prefers candidates who are religious because they tend to be more moral than candidates who aren't...

Gravatar‘Wave Of Violence’ Against Women In Iraq Undercuts White House’s Claims Of Success »
In recent weeks, the Bush administration has cited declining violence in Iraq as evidence of the success. Earlier this month, President Bush said that Iraqis are slowly “taking back their country.”

But last night, NBC Nightly News aired a segment about a “wave of violence that’s gone largely unreported lately against women in Iraq.” The report noted that Iraqi women, once “the most emancipated in the Arab world,” are increasingly unable to walk around without a hijab, wear cosmetics, or work. GravatarSigning bonus????

GravatarI can't recall a time when a contemporary Woody Allen movie was greeted with mass acceptance by other critics or the public, "Annie Hall" and "Hannah and Her Sisters" being the obvious exceptions.

When those "earlier, funnier films" were first released, they were pretty much ignored or derided. He made some incredibly perfect movies in the 80s - "Broadway Danny Rose", "Purple Rose of Cairo", and "Radio Days" - that sank like stones. In the 90s, you've got "Mighty Aphrodite", "Bullets Over Broadway" and "Deconstructing Harry", maybe even "Everyone Says I Love You" that are all good, solid comedies. More recently, there's "Small Time Crooks" and "Match Point". Hell, I even liked "Hollywood Ending."

The guy's a fucking genius, and that's the end of it.

GravatarI was just going to write about this WSJ article. Somehow that paper showed up on our doorstep, either misdelivered or a freebie. Anyway, more from the piece I found even more disturbing, if that's possible:
"The projected supply of foreclosed homes is equal to about 45% of existing home sales and could add four months to the supply of existing homes, says Dale Westhoff, a senior managing director at Bear Stearns. This is a "fundamental shift" in the housing supply, says Mr. Westhoff, who believes that home prices will drop further as lenders "mark to market" repossessed homes."

2nd best line:

Cate as Bob (at a Warhol party): "Hey, I want you to meet Brian Jones. He's in that cute covers band."

That movie truly is his most underappreciated masterpiece. Why it isn't shown on network TV every Thanksgiving is beyond me...

GravatarAs I said:

Too much money in too few hands chasing too few investment opportunities. Which resulted, of course, from too much money being in too few hands to begin with. When the masses are tapped out, it becomes hard to find places to stash cash that will produce a return.

It's far from over. We're in for a capital R recession, if not worse.

GravatarFrom the NYT article re Howard's "Comprehensive Defeat:"

Mr. Rudd, 18 years younger than Mr. Howard, has a reputation as a cerebral student of policy, as opposed to the Liberal leader’s image of a hardened and aggressive political animal.

Mr. Rudd’s rather dry image was if anything enhanced by the revelation which emerged shortly before the beginning of the campaign that he had got drunk and visited a strip club when he was on a visit to Scores New York in 2003.

“He seems more personable, approachable,” Marcelle Freiman, a university lecturer with two children, who voted for Mr. Rudd in eastern Sydney said. “He doesn’t seem arrogant yet and I have respect for him.”

I was thinking the other day: why don't you take out a domain name, STEVESIMELS.COM and post your music/movie/book reviews online and sell advertising to pay you for them?

(I know you are going to complain that you know NOTHING about such things but I also know that there are a BUNCH of people here who will help you do this. It should not cost you very much to start and if you have the reviews stored in either physical (ever heard of OCR software?) or data copies, it would not be difficult a task. I also know that with all of the good will and your excellent taste you have exhibited your fame has (and will) spread far and wide.

GravatarI mentioned in here a few weeks back that I was reading What is the What, the novelized account of Valentino Achek Deng's story of his flight from his boyhood home in southern Sudan at age 7, his 1000 trek to safety in Ethiopia, and his 15 years as an orphan in refugee camps, written by Dave Eggers.

I can't recommend this book highly enough. It is absolutely heartbreaking, but this man's voice comes through so clear. I can't imagine my nephew fleeing and being shot at by helicopters and being stalked by lions, yet he's already a year older than this man was when he was forced to flee. I'm making my soon to be 16 year old niece read it, because I figure she needs a wake-up call on the "poor poor pitiful me" front.

Not surprisingly, a Bush figures in all the misery.

GravatarA US military spokesman in Iraq has blamed Iranian-backed Shia militants for a bomb attack on a pet market in Baghdad that killed at least 13 people.

The bomb, hidden in a box of birds at the popular Ghazil market, also injured dozens on Friday.

Rear Adm Gregory Smith said four people had been arrested overnight and that confessions pointed to an Iranian-backed special groups cell.

He said the cell wanted the blame to fall on Sunni al-Qaeda militants.

GravatarRecent reports of refugee and internally displaced families trickling back to their Baghdad neighbourhoods have brought some semblance of hope that the security situation is improving in the capital.

But "the number being displaced still far exceeds the number of returnees", according to a November report by the International Organisation for Migration, IOM, a Swiss-based intergovernmental organisation focusing on refugees and displaced persons. And aid for internally displaced Iraqis is not meeting needs, aid organisations report.

Hundreds of thousands of families remain in camps throughout the country, where young Iraqis do not have access to education and are vulnerable to disease, according to aid agencies.

According to the United Nations children’s agency, UNICEF, 15 per cent of Iraq’s population - about four million people - has fled their homes since 2003. Fifty per cent are children.

The IOM in Iraq reports that 2.25 million Iraqis are internally displaced. In September 2007, Amnesty International said that Iraq had the "the fastest growing displacement crisis in the world".

GravatarBlack Friday: shockingly tame in my corner of the world.  Admittedly, I didn't start till the early morning insanities were over.

GravatarGENEVA, November 2007 (UNHCR) – Amid media reports that thousands of refugees are going back to Iraq, the UN refugee agency said on Friday that while improved security conditions were welcome it was not yet time to promote, organize or encourage returns.

Spokeswoman Jennifer Pagonis told journalists in Geneva that UNHCR was ready to assist people who have decided, or will decide, to return to Iraq voluntarily, but the agency believed that large-scale repatriation would only be possible "when proper return conditions are in place – including material and legal support and physical safety."

She added that "presently, there is no sign of any large-scale return to Iraq as the security situation in many parts of the country remains volatile and unpredictable. "

According to a survey conducted by UNHCR staff in Syria, there are many reasons for returns to Iraq other than considerations of improved security. Most of some 110 Iraqi families interviewed said they were returning because they were running out of money and/or resources, they faced difficult living conditions or because their visas have expired.

GravatarThe truth is that eating properly is ungodly expensive. Fresh fruits and vegetables are a lot more expensive than potato chips and hamburgers. The cheapest meats are the fattiest. (hot dogs, lunch meat, sausages and such)

People (who are ignorant) always look at fat poor people and rationalize their being fat as evidence that they are getting plenty to eat when the truth is that is their poverty that makes them fat.

My children in school had the most dreadful nutrition and soul food itself is really an abomination when it comes to good nutrition (Though I really LOVE soul food) But there is no way in hell that boiled cornbread and sugar rice with turkey knuckles and fried chicken and macaroni and cheese and greens are not high in calories.

If I were a paranoid person I would just say this is one more way that MAN keeps his food on the neck of poor people but that would be wrong, wouldn't it?

GravatarOT: A woman who conceived a child after a one-night stand with a colleague and hid her pregnancy from everyone has won the right to keep the birth a secret from the father.

The woman, who is now 20 and cannot be named for legal reasons, became pregnant when she was 19, but did not realise until a late stage. She told no one, shunned medical help until she went into labour, and put the girl up for adoption as soon as she was born.

In September, after an application from the local authority, a county court judge ruled that the woman's parents and the father of the child should be told. But yesterday, three appeal judges overruled him and, in a landmark judgment, agreed that the mother has "the ultimate veto" over who should be told about her child.

They ordered that the local authority and guardian take no steps to identify the father or tell him about the birth of the girl, who is now 19 weeks old. They also banned the authority from introducing the girl to any of the mother's family to assess them as potential carers. Depends on the neighborhood. Half a mil doesn't get you half that much space in Manhattan.

Gravatarits been quite cold today, real winter weather, wore my long coat for the first time.

Gravatar3 years ago the Eagles lost to the Patriots in a even, exciting Superbowl. Tomorrow the Eagles will be the greatest NFL underdog ever going into Foxboro.

Heck of a job Andy Ried, Joe Banner. Heck of a job.

Exactly my point.

GravatarTwo soldiers who smuggled stolen guns out of Iraq to sell as souvenirs were jailed at a court martial yesterday.

The lance corporals from the Yorkshire Regiment drew up a homemade catalogue of the black market weapons which are thought to have been smuggled out of Iraq in the fuel tanks of trucks and armoured cars. Their plan was to make money from easy sales to colleagues in a battalion which, according to evidence at the court martial in Catterick barracks, North Yorkshire, was "riddled with drug abuse and dealing" at the time of the incident three years ago.

GravatarThe Oxford Union has voted to let the British National Party (BNP) leader and a controversial historian speak at a free speech event on Monday.

Despite opposition, the Oxford Union Debating Society members voted by a margin of 2 to 1 to continue to extend an invite to the BNP's Nick Griffin.

David Irving, who was jailed for Holocaust denial, will also be invited.

The move was opposed by the Oxford Student Union and the university's Muslim and Jewish societies.

The Oxford Union Debating Society said it was important to give people of all views a platform.

Luke Tryl, president of the society, said: "The men were not being given a platform to extol their views, but were coming to talk about the limits for free speech.

The internets.

I knows. Just miss that wonderful sensation of walking into Tower and wanting say, the Mozart "Requiem," and having like 400 different recordings to choose from...

GravatarJust a couple of comments: FYI - Mortgage interest rates are tied to the Bond Market(yield), not the Fed funds rate. And when the Fed lowers its rate, it often ADVERSELY AFFECTS the bond market, by making stocks more attractive.

Given that it's obvious that the sub-prime mortgage problem was created by the lenders, why do you suppose the only "remedy" being considered (besides bailing out the lenders) consists of further regulation of mortgage Brokers (to the point of putting us out of business)? Could it be the amount of money & lobbying the lenders can use to influence law makers? And of course web sites like Atrios encouraging support of such legislation, although I have yet to read any stories about how a mortgage broker defrauded a borrower or lender like the mortgage Banker who did.

GravatarAt least 15 people are feared to have been killed in two separate suspected suicide attacks against security forces in Pakistan.

A suicide bomber rammed a car into a defence ministry bus outside an intelligence service office in garrison city of Rawalpindi on Saturday.

Another bomber blew up his vehicle outside Pakistan's army headquarters.

Al Jazeera correspondent Kamal Hyder said: "The blast outside the intelligence agency was very powerful and the casualties are likely to be in the dozens."

Reports of the number of people killed in the attack varied, with the Reuters news agency reporting at least 15 people were killed.

That's OK. Joe Gibbs half of the time acts like he doesn't even realize there's a football game going on right in front of him.

Hey, my neighbor is a firefighter. Wonder if I'm on a list somewhere because I watch the news and swear...

Amazon. They pretty much have everything....

GravatarJust miss that wonderful sensation of walking into Tower and wanting say, the Mozart "Requiem," and having like 400 different recordings to choose from.

I always loved record stores. Some of my fondest memories are of being 12 and 13 years old and walking down to the neighborhood record store and picking up the latest Beatles single. Good times....

In NYC, the Virgin Megastore still has a pretty good classical department.

I'm also told J&R downtown is good as well...

And of course, there's no parameters for "suspicious stuff" or even "just cause for entry."

All Hail the Fatherland.

nope

WIC only added fresh foods to their "must haves" this past year.

My community center has fresh food give-aways once a week. The truck pulls up and (in one of the poorest Wilmington neighborhoods), the folks line up for the free veggies and fruits and sometimes get so riled up that police are called in to calm them down.

Trust me -- it's exquisite, and a real revelation.

GravatarPope Benedict XVI has elevated 23 prelates from around the world to the position of cardinal and delivered a pressing appeal for an end to war in Iraq.

One of the new cardinals is Emmanuel III Delly, the Baghdad-based Patriarch of Babylon of the Chaldeans.

During a ceremony in St Peter's Basilica on Saturday, the pope said Christians in Iraq were "feeling with their own flesh the dramatic consequences of an enduring conflict".

The Chaldeans are Iraq's biggest Christian group and the Chaldean rite is one of oldest in the Catholic Church.

Kobe Bryant has been coddled and pampered by the Lakers more than Kobe beef gets pampered by Japanese farmers.

GravatarThanks, Steve...

In Boston, Virgin took over Tower's old massive space at the top of Newbury St., but they went bust within a couple of years. HMV similarly didn't last for very long. "Not a big college town..."

I always loved record stores.

Me too. Prolly explains why I spent FAR too many years working in 'em...

AHA!

I have a 33 1/3 disc with that roll (exceptional only in the poor quality), but which I still play once a week.

Afternoon, rational people.

GravatarEscuse me, but I didn't fall for the charade and I haven't missed a month's payment EVER on my mortgage.

Please explain to me why I should bail out (1) biog banks who lent to people who couldn't pay and (2) people who thought that they deserved a house they couldn't pay for.

Just a question. I mean, capitalism works when it rewards rational economic decision-making.

I made rational decisions and now I am supposed to pay for those who did not, both on Wall Street and on Main Street?
