OT: Spain has agreed to extradite a former Argentine navy officer accused of torturing and killing thousands of dissidents during Argentina's so-called Dirty War.
Ricardo Miguel Cavallo was arrested in Mexico in 2000 and extradited to Spain in 2003 on genocide and terrorism charges.
The Spanish government said in a statement it would grant a request from Argentina for his extradition, although genocide and terrorism charges against him in Spain will still be pending.
Up to 30,000 people were killed or "disappeared" during Argentina's 1976-1983 military government.

A solution to McCain's Panama problem, with Obama's support : A solution to McCain's Panama problem, with Obama's support
On Thursday, the New York Times took up the question of whether John McCain, the presumptive Republican nominee, is even eligible for the presidency. The Constitution specifies that "No person except a natural born citizen... shall be eligible to the office of President." This has been popularly (but never legally) interpreted as meaning that only those persons actually born in the United States were eligible. But McCain wasn't born here; he was born in the Panama Canal Zone, as his father, serving in the Navy, was stationed there at the time.
There might not have ever been much of a controversy over the issue, but one Senator has taken steps to ensure that McCain will indeed be eligible. And no, the Senator in question isn't a Republican trying to ensure the health of their party -- it's Missouri Democrat Claire McCaskill, a prominent backer of Barack Obama. McCaskill has introduced the "Children of Military Families Natural Born Citizen Act" into the Senate. McCaskill's legislation, which she wrote by hand on a notepad after reading the Times article, specifies a new part of the definition of "natural born citizen," which, if the bill passes, will now include "any person born to any citizen of the United States while serving in the active or reserve components of the United States Armed Forces." Obama himself is now co-sponsoring the bill.
campaigns are of course perfectly entitled to stay in the thing as long as they want.

We have family Australia. One cousin was born to US parents on Guam while her dad was in the Navy in the 50s. She was raised in Australia where her parents moved after he was discharged (and started one of the first dive shops, but I digress.)
When she tried to apply for US citizenship, she was denied when she applied as a young adult. Circumstances must have had some bearing. But it's an example of someone who didn't automatically get citizenship.

Erm, no.
The State Department has stated flat out that US military bases don't count as US territory.

It's cool that Obama co sponsers the bill, no McCain has to be beholden to Obama no matter what the outcome. And conservatives will gnash their teeth and fear that McCain looks weak.

No only one parent has to be a citizen. That was the case with me. You might have to file a report of a birth with the state department. I have one of those as well.

Part of the problem with the "natural born" thing is that there hasn't been a ruling on what it is, just a lot of legislation, constitutional law, and commentary on same.
No judge has ever been forced to interpret all this and issue a ruling.
So there's plenty of armchair analysis (to include mine) on what "natural born" actually means, aside from the obvious of you were born somewhere in the 50 states (or contiguous territories in the case of Barry Goldwater).

Sorry, Atrios. I love you bro, but its time to stop acting like a pussy.Hillary is providing the Mccain campaign with too much cannon fodder
I rather think Obama's fighting back pretty well. This two on one stuff actually helps him, I think. He's not backing down, and it makes him look tugh and like a leader.

Hint, guys who use that phrase as an insult, don't get to see as much of it.

Yes but they didn't have the senator from Mississippi giving Lott a bad name.

isn't it amazing that mitch daniels gets to be the governor of indiana after he missed the cost of the iraqapation by 2 trillion 950 billion dollars (wow that's the biggest subtraction problem i have ever done in longhand).
No one ever said we elected them smart in Red State Indiana.
Besides, he worked for Lilly at one time. Ask him how many hookers it takes to buy off a senator and you'll get an answer stat!

Of course, there's an issue of US parantage when the father is alledged to be an American citizen, and the mother is not. This happens everywhere we've got US troops stationed. Europeans (those terrible people) have long held that if daddy is a European, even if he was just in a one night stand, the child is a citizen of Europe (name your subunit here) as well.
The US, not so much acknowledging this aspect of our military adventurism.

Obama fights well, and understand how to use subtlety.
As I said I'm more fascinated at his use of tactics then anything. Can't call them brilliant until after he wins, but I called Bill Clinton in 1991, and I've felt the same way about Obama since 2004. My political sense is tingling...

Whining already? You'd make a lame Iowan. Or New Hampsherinian. Ite.
I honestly think this 'thang' should go on right to the convention, so every citizen in America gets to endure weeks of ringing phones and eager-beaver teenagers harrassing you for their votes -- if not the month you're going to get because of your savvy scheduling out there in PA.
Seriously: anybody who's ever bitched about Iowa or NH 'going first' doesn't have a clue what it's like. Not a clue. I hope your ears start bleeding.
