Health Care Organizers Confronted By Police At Event With Nebraska Senator
By Brian Beutler - July 3, 2009, 1:31PM
Did Sen. Mike Johanns (R-NE) sick the cops on a group of health care reform organizers? That's what the Service Employees International Union is claiming. The group had received permission to gather at the Nebraska Medical Center to meet Johanns who was scheduled to appear at a roundtable discussion on health care--but Johanns apparently wasn't interested.
"SEIU along with teachers and members of the military set up a table with apple pie and signs welcoming the Senator and urging him to support an American solution to healthcare reform," noted Jane Kleeb, SEIU State Director. "Instead of coming by and saying hello, the Senator walked right by us as we were surrounded by police and said 'good luck with that.'
Nice, eh? (the Revolution is LONG overdue)

Well, generally, you can see larvae "twitching" in the water before they become adults,
let me be more clear.
for the past three, no four years, my flooding in my back yard has been as regular as..well, rain. every frakkin time it rained for more than a patter, i got water. now, the yard is a funny shape, and to get the water out i had to dig a trench. it's a thing with the pump, but anyway, so there's this spade-wide scar smack in the middle of my yard 30ft long and 2ft deep. i can get all the water off the yard (altho the regularity of the flooding killed a lot of plants and grass, pretty!) but not out of the trench. again, it's a thing with the pump, but anyway. so the ground is so saturated most of the time, that water just Stays There. for days. i even had some duckweed and pondscum growing there. warm, protected from the breeze, standing as still as a rock, just what do you my smarty pants nature guy with the oh so helpful scientific classification think really enjoyed living there? hmmm, well, yes, i did get ducks sometimes. a couple of frogs, sure. the deer would stroll thru now and again. what else, gosh i wonder, could it be...

The dunks are made of dormant bacillus thuringensis israeliensis (which is specific to mosquitoes) in a non-toxic substrate. Technically, it's biological control, not chemical, and should not affect the frogs or any other life form.

Gail Collins, " Basically, the point was that Palin is quitting as governor because she’s not a quitter. Or a deceased salmon.
Sarah Barracuda made her big announcement Friday afternoon on the lawn of her home to an audience that appeared to include only Todd, the kids and the next-door neighbors. Smiling manically, she looked like a parody of the woman who knocked the Republicans dead at their convention. She babbled about her parents’ refrigerator magnet, which apparently had a lot of wise advice. And she recalled her visit with the troops in Kosovo, whose dedication and determination inspired her to ... resign.
“Life is about choices!” declared the nation’s most anti-choice politician.

Sarah Palin martyred for the cause of conservatism http://LloydMarcus.com ^ | July 4, 2009 | Lloyd Marcus
While watching Sarah Palin's resignation speech, I thought, "Who is this amazing woman? What planet did she come from? Will there ever be anyone like her?" Once again, I was blown away by her power, grace, character and courage.
The world is mourning the loss of a one of a kind pop icon. I mourn the loss of a one of a kind conservative leader martyred for the cause of conservatism. Though impossible for the pop icon, I pray Palin will be resurrected for 2012.
The martyr of Palin has angered, energized, and elevated my commitment to fight for the cause of conservatism. The left was relentless in their quest to destroy Palin and her family with frivolous lawsuits, cruel jokes, lies, and character assassination. The level of hatred for this great woman is unparalleled. I vow, by the grace of God, to fight these EVIL people with all that is in me.
Watch your fucking mouth, "Lloyd," or you'll be next on the chopping block.

The chief judge of the federal appeals court in San Francisco was rebuked but not formally disciplined by a judicial panel Thursday for posting sexually explicit material on his private Web site and failing to remove it when he learned it was publicly accessible....
Kozinski, 58, was appointed to the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals by President Ronald Reagan in 1985 and began a seven-year term as chief judge in December 2007 by virtue of seniority. The court is the nation's largest appellate circuit and hears appeals from federal courts in California and eight other Western states.
The Los Angeles Times disclosed some of the contents of his now-disabled Web site in June 2008. They included images of masturbation, a slide-show striptease and two naked women on all fours painted as cows.

A trenchant quote from the link: If America is circling the drain, Goldman Sachs has found a way to be that drain - an extremely unfortunate loophole in the system of Western democratic capitalism, which never foresaw that in a society governed passively by free markets and free elections, organized greed always defeats disorganized democracy.
Even before the current financial meltdown I was 75% convinced that capitalism = total corruption. Now I'm 100% convinced. There's never enough regulation to prevent it from being that way. It's screw or be screwed by any means necessary. Anyone who denies this is simply a liar.

I really HATE this jump from assholes to an ethnic group that seemingly ameliorates criticism of the bastards because it is THEN ethnic hate.
HTG, I really have no idea of what you are talking about. The article points out that a group of individuals conspired (with others) to manipulate the financial system to their own gain.
If the article speculated that the ties among the players were that they attended the same synagogue, I could understand - though not excuse - your generalization.

Only the Villagers could view Palin's quitting as a political masterstroke. Their GOP puppetmasters don't even believe that. Even if there is more scandal to be revealed, her mystique has increased with enough beltway pundits to keep her political stock viable.
That should be a good thing for the Dems but sometime in 2011 NPR will probably do a fluff piece on her and half of their listeners will have forgotten all the stuff from 2008-2009.

Son and I had a long conversation that touched on this yesterday. We claim to have a sense of history and hold up capitalism as the example of how best to organize human society.
How long has capitalism actually been an organizing principle? 200 years....maybe 300? Where is this taking us as a species, consuming vast amounts of scarce resources and despoiling the planet. And yet we, as individuals, continue to play our little role within this larger landscape, unable to challenge the assumption that capitalism is not the problem.
We simply do not have the will or intelligence to correct what is wrong.
I think I'll go out and get a double skim latte.

Post Jew, ergo propter Jew.
I can understand, up to a pint, a rabid Xian going all Jewy-Jew on everybody. "They killed X!!1! They ruined everything!". It's religious bullshit, but it at least has some sort of basis in "history", if you believe all that Bible crap. What I've never understood is the bigot-on-the-street blaming all the financial woes in the world, during whatever era you like, on one religious group. Especially since--again, if you believe ATBC--it was the King of Kings, who was to be essentially, the King of the Jews, who threw out the moneychangers. Maybe you had to be there...

Be sure to thank the President and Congress. This week, with news of some 467,000 jobs lost in June, the Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that the U.S. has now lost about two million jobs since the economic stimulus package passed. Even more notable is that the average workweek has been slashed to 33 hours - the lowest number on record. When the President signed his $787 billion stimulus package into law, he confidently asserted that unemployment would not exceed eight percent. If Congress hadn’t passed it, he warned, it would rise to nine percent by 2010. Well, unemployment reached 9.5 percent last month, meaning, by the President’s own logic, that his stimulus package has failed.

The rehearsals he was doing for his tour that never happened?
They have about 100 hours of footage. So it's getting released.

in yurop, for example, manufacturers need to comply with the rohs standard (like no lead solder in electronic equipment, for example)...this is a requirement that few americans think about - the yuropeeons realize that PEOPLE are more important than CAPITALISM...in the US, that standard has been shit on and laughed at by our capitalists in charge
in yurop they have a right to privacy which makes it illegal for business to gather info on me, making google et al. have to work differently there
you can tell me to move to yurop, but the point is that our system enables the fuck yous to continue against we the people.

be replaced by oligarchy bc there will always be someone with money willing to bend the rules
Perfect. Couldn't agree more. And it's not just the actual green - if you have money, you have education, you have a sense of entitlement, you have privilege. That sense creates the ability to stand up to forces that want to suppress, and therefore avoid or at least minimize suppression by those that have. And you have a better chance of getting what you want.
Gladwell's book "Outliers" addresses this somewhat.

there's an anarchist in your midst. a collectivist, a la MacLeod. i don't talk about that very often but that's what i want. why do we need to share "a system" in the first place? i'm not saying i'm a Galtian, but i'm not big on mass conformity either. a lot of our problem right now is that "too big" applies to too many situations.

Taibbi points out that a big chunk of AIG bailout went to GS, making them whole while pensioneers of the automakers have to settle for fifty cents on the dollar.
That stinks. And it also highlights stoat's point about GS insuring against losses they were directly responsible for causing.

.i try to be a good amurkin and believe this, but in my heart of hearts i don't. capitalism is guaranteed to always fail and be replaced by oligarchy bc there will always be someone with money willing to bend the rules.
All political and economic systems tend to evolve towards oligarchy. Communist systems do it even faster than pure capitalism does. At least in a social-democratic market system, the public can in theory require the rules to be made so that it evolves towards an oligarchy more slowly.

There are several "Parts" to the stimulus package. And perhaps, you are correct while being wrong.
The stimulus package should NOT be separated from the TARP program. If you consider the two together, you are right and still quite wrong.

I'll never forget watching Palin answer the first question posed to her in debate by saying that, rather than answer that question, she'd speak about something entirely different and more important. Her base loved it. Everyone else thought her ridiculous.
And so it's been, ever since. I haven't always liked the etent to which Obama tries to bring people in and form consensus. But the righties, at this point, are driving out all but the truest of believers. And they're doing so at a time when rightie government, under Bush/Cheney and Schwarenegger and others, has never had less positive results to show for itself.
