GravatarHow do we make up for running such tripe? We have an online discussion with her!

-WaPo

GravatarAs for the "whiners...chiseling taxpayers out of money," I was referring specifically to the large number of fraudulent claims for Katrina relief--well documented in news stories.

Funny how she goes after the poor black people, while the white rich people who got the billions in no-bid contracts get a pass...

GravatarFive'll get you ten a hurricane hits this woman's house, she's first in line to sue her shitty, greedy, miserable Dickensian insurance company when they don't pay up.

Fuck that, five'll get you twenty.

It's only greedy and lazy when other people do it.

GravatarCharlotte Allen reflects the current WaPo in so many ugly ways.

Except when caught out, she shows no embarrassment whatsoever.

Ugly piece of work. Given a megaphone by the MCM. Bcz one can't be too rich or too rightwing.

GravatarWow. If only we could have a horrific, deadly natural disaster that would only hit, say, mortgage bankers. You know, those folks who goofed around and didn't do their job for years, and are now expecting the government to come in and bail them out. It would be a good thing for them--well, OK, for those who survive and aren't drowned/burnt/whatever--to lose everything they own, be forced out of their communities, and have to start over with nothing! Right, Charlotte?

GravatarMost revealing line of the Charlotte Allen online chat: When asked about herself, Allen said, "I'm not a mother, having married too late, alas." Makes me think that the venom Allen directs against women who challange gender norms is an outwardly projected self-hatred for the ways in which Allen herself has failed to maintain gender norms.

GravatarHere's a choice bit from the link:

"Philadelphia: Why do you call women like Elizabeth I and Hildegard of Bingen brilliant outliers? Don't you believe that there could have been many more women like them if women had had the same education, money, power and social status that many men had? Wouldn't that have allowed them to realize their potential?

Charlotte Allen: Sure, there might have been a few more--and in fact there were many more in Hildegard's time, when there were learned abbesses all over Europe. "

It does seem Ms. Allen's views on the possibility of high achievement for women are somewhat medieval. The hilarity of it all. What a sparkling wit!

GravatarJesus Christ, this family has suffered enough

A story in today's Grand Rapids Press, about 2 little kids with genetic heart ailments, and how one died this week, and the other is very sick. The thing is, their grandpa lives directly across the street from me. He's in his 50's. About eight years ago or so, his wife was diagnosed with mesothelioma, and she died after a couragous battle with cancer about three years ago.

He's got this beautiful, big family (6 kids), and this guy, day in and day out, made time for the family and always made time with his wife. They used to go on walks holding hands, etc. You could tell that they really loved each other.

Denny has suffered enough, goddamnit.

GravatarI mean, if we had journalists conducting interviews like this, that would be the next question: How many times have you been there? How much of the recovery effort have you seen? How much time have you spent talking with people who left the city about how they've resettled themselves?

But we have idiot children who mistake being loved for being good, instead of grownups. I love people who talk about "professional" journalists. We need fewer professionals and more junkyard dogs who smell bullshit and fucking BARK.

A.

GravatarJesus Christ, noblejoanie - I tried to read Krugman's column.

GravatarI know it's already been referred to, but it's worth quoting in full to remind one of the kind of circles Charlotte Allen aspires to:

"What I'm hearing, which is sort of scary, is they all want to stay in Texas. Everyone is so overwhelmed by the hospitality. And so many of the people in the arena here, you know, were underprivileged anyway, so this is working very well for them."
-- Barbara Bush

GravatarMost revealing line of the Charlotte Allen online chat: When asked about herself, Allen said, "I'm not a mother, having married too late, alas." Makes me think that the venom Allen directs against women who challange gender norms is an outwardly projected self-hatred for the ways in which Allen herself has failed to maintain gender norms.

Sounds about right to me.

GravatarMATTHEWS: You know, when he was a prisoner all those years, as you know, in isolation from his fellows, I do believe, uhm, and Machiavelli had this right -- it's not sentimental, it's factual -- the more you give to something, the more you become committed to it. That's true of marriage and children and everything we've committed to in our lives. He committed to his country over there. He made an investment in America, alone in that cell, when he was being tortured and afraid of being put to death at any moment -- and turning down a chance to come home.

Those are non-political facts which I think do work for him. When it gets close this November, which I do believe, and you likely agree, will be a very close contest between him and whoever wins the Democratic fight. And I think people will look at that fact, that here's a man who has invested deeply, and physically and personally in his country.

Remember when Matthews rhapsodized about John Kerry's military service? I don't.

Gravatarhttp://www.mydd.com/story/2008/3...3/7/155722/ 0130

MyDD's Jonathan Singer posts that MyDD has audio from last year of Kerry discussing McCain staff approaching Tom Daschle about VP slot--back in 2004!! As well as staffers talking to Kerry about it.

Can't wait to have some reporter ask McCain about that.

McBush does lie--er--mix things up quite a bit. He'll probably say he had no idea what his staff was doing....

John Kerry: I don't know all the details of it. I know that Tom [Daschle], from a conversation with him, was in conversation with a number of Republicans back then. It doesn't surprise me completely because his people similarly approached me to engage in a discussion about his potentially being on the ticket as Vice President. So his people were active -- let's put it that way.

Singer: Okay. And just to confirm, you said it, but this is something they approached you rather than...

Kerry: Absolutely correct. John Weaver of his shop... [JK aswers phone]

GravatarMccainus economic "brain" admits tax cuts don't pay for themselves. Time to drown him in the bathtub, wingnuts!

I think you yourself have argued that tax cuts at a time of increases in mandatory spending on entitlement programs are not sustainable. Is that correct?
I am sure I said that we cannot tax our way out of our current situation. I'm sure I've said that tax cuts don't pay for themselves. We've got to bring the long-term mandatory commitments in line with revenues, period. The only way to do that is to really address the growth of those spending programs.

Me, too, until the end, where he says:
And the problem now becomes obvious. This is now the third time Ben & co. have tried slapping the market in the face — and panic keeps coming back. So maybe the markets aren’t hysterical — maybe they’re just facing reality. And in that case the markets don’t need a slap in the face, they need more fundamental treatment — and maybe triage.

Also, his post right below it is easier for a layperson like me to understand.

GravatarCan't wait to have some reporter ask McCain about that.

Someone did...and he flipped out.

GravatarCharlotte Allen: Women have been gaining equal rights since the 19th century, when laws were passed permitting them to hold and control their own property on marriage. The suffrage movement got started a century ago, and the Equal Pay Act of 1963 and the Civil Rights Act of 1964 made it illegal to discriminate against women in hiring, promotions, and pay. All good things. But it's now nearly 50 years since those landmark laws were passed, and it's time for women who want to get ahead to quit complaining that they can't get ahead.

Something tells me you would have voted against such laws.

GravatarDoes this parent sound like a fucking uptight asshole who hates sexuality, or what?

Great concept for school

I was stunned to read about negative reactions from parents and especially from teachers concerning the sex-segregated school plan proposed by Green County Superintendent Shawn McCullough of Georgia ("Sex-segregated school plan shakes up community," Press, March 2).

As a parent of four (two teenagers), I would love to see something like that in our area. In a sex-crazed society, the dress, speech, body language, e-mails, Internet and media add a lot of confusion and frustration to teens these days.

Having worked as a foster parent and over 15 years with youth, the sexual pressures in high schools and junior high in our current society appear at an all-time high.

I wonder if the parents are clueless to what is really out there luring their children. There are many good parents raising good kids, but there are too many other "parents" out there who let their kids run rampant to their own demise. Younger and younger are the kids getting involved in sexual activity (having multiple partners, "phone sex," "Internet sex").

I believe segregating the boys and girls into separate schools will help reduce that sexual tension and hopefully cause them to flourish in their education. My hat is off to Mr. McCollough who is taking a stand to do his job well by coming up with a solution to give the students a better chance to be educated.

Furthermore, shame on the teachers who would not want to stand behind this superintendent! In my opinion, that district would be better served to have those teachers move on!

Right. Because if you just be a nice girl, you'll be able to get $1.00 worth of groceries for 75 cents and the old boy network will just dry up and blow away.

GravatarBumiller's "Why are you so angry" question is great. Mean old cranky McCain.

GravatarThe idea that McCain or any soldier is more of a patriot or hero that a Chomsky, Vidal or NTodd for that matter is pure nationalistic jingoism. McCain flew off aircraft carriers to kill and maim innocent children, mothers and fathers. And then he went back to have steak and eggs. And when he did get shot down, the civilians just about tore him apart. As would many Americans if one of the 9/11 hijackers had parachuted into Times Square.

Gravatarsegregating the boys and girls into separate schools will help reduce that sexual tension

GravatarWell, you know we childless whores are filled with rage toward our fellow females. I'm sorry, WTF? Why must we attribute to childlessness that which stupidity will adequately explain?

I think the point of the original post was that women like Allen (not, of course, our illustrious posters here) are the ones who believe all women should be home baking cookies for their brood of kids. (After all, they're too stupid to do anything else, right?).

If you really believe that, then you must feel at least a twinge of guilt/self hatred or whatever if you, in fact, don't have any offspring to bake cookies for. You have failed in your mission. You are defective. You must expiate your sins by being really, really mean and nasty to other women who failed to produce lots of kids 'n cookies.

Gravatar"Wednesday, March 5 at 2 p.m. ET, Allen will come online for a special chat to answer readers' questions
The transcript follows.

Editor's note: An offensive question was removed from this transcript following the discussion."

My mind got to wondering: what could be so bad that it had to be censored from the internet? Could a question be so offensive, so inappropriate, so insulting, that no one was allowed to read it, except the editors at "The Post"? And then I realized: I'm glad they're there for me, looking out for my sensitive feelings and thinking things through for me before I get a chance to think about them. And isn't that what journalism, ladies and gentlemen, is all about?
