Begich Expanding Lead Over Stevens -- Little By Little http://
tpmelectioncentral.talkin...ad_over_ste.php
Some more ballots have been counted in the exhausting Alaska Senate race, with Democrat Mark Begich's lead over GOP Senator and convicted felon Ted Stevens increasing just a little bit more.
Begich's lead has gone from 814 votes to 1,022 votes. In terms of percentage, Begich leads by 0.35%. If his lead gets up to 0.5% or higher, there will not be an automatic recount. Over 14,000 more votes have been counted, with about 30,000 left to go -- and that process will take us into some time next week.
The Anchorage Daily News points out that some of these new ballots have come from the Mat-Su area, the right-wing stronghold that gave us Sarah Palin -- so the fact that Begich's lead is still going up is a very bad sign for the incumbent Republican. Not only is the pool of remaining votes shrinking, but Stevens is running out of GOP areas that could put him over the top.

Letter from Iceland
For Icelanders, the golden years were the early years, shortly after the land was settled in the ninth century. The Viking tradition, the Althing – the legislative assembly dating to 930 – and the literary canon of Sagas and Eddas are the nation’s cultural bedrock. But after that, Iceland almost disappears from the history books. While the agricultural revolution, the Renaissance, the industrial revolution came and went, while the fine cities of Europe were being built, while artists from Michelangelo to Mozart were pouring forth their creations, while the great inventions and discoveries were being invented and discovered, Icelanders were hunkering down in their turf houses, meeting the hardest challenge of all – survival.
They survived plague, famine, earthquakes and volcanoes. There were times when some even considered abandoning the island. But they stayed on. They stayed and survived. Icelanders will tell you that only the fittest survived, but that is only half the story, because survival requires another key attribute: stubbornness. And Icelanders have it in spades. It is a national trait, and they view it not as a weakness but as a virtue.
They sound like the wingnut faction of the GOP (the only one that still survives).

SACRAMENTO — Less than two weeks before Election Day, the chief strategist behind a ballot measure outlawing same-sex marriage in California called an emergency meeting here.
Frank Schubert was the chief strategist for Proposition 8, which defines marriage as between a man and a woman in California.
“We’re going to lose this campaign if we don’t get more money,” the strategist, Frank Schubert, recalled telling leaders of Protect Marriage, the main group behind the ban.
The campaign issued an urgent appeal, and in a matter of days, it raised more than $5 million, including a $1 million donation from Alan C. Ashton, the grandson of a former president of the Mormon Church. The money allowed the drive to intensify a sharp-elbowed advertising campaign, and support for the measure was catapulted ahead; it ultimately won with 52 percent of the vote.
...
On Oct. 28, Mr. Ashton, the grandson of the former Mormon president David O. McKay, donated $1 million. Mr. Ashton, who made his fortune as co-founder of the WordPerfect Corporation, said he was following his personal beliefs and the direction of the church.
Thanks for going Hecate.

Woke up one Sunday morning with horrendous pains in the chest. My daughter called an ambulance.
They did all the tests...turned out it was stress. I was going through a cancer scare at the time. (Found out in December 2004 after undergoing a biopsy that the 'mass" showing up in the mammograhm was just tissue and not a tumour...benign.)
I had medical coverage and still wound up getting a $500 bill that I had to pay off in installments.

Corel owns WordPerfect, but the Mac program is AbandonWare. If you google WordPerfect Mac, you will stumble across John Rethorst, who has single-handedly kept it going.
The last version, 3.5e, works only on Classic-enabled Macs. This basically made it impossible on Intel based machines, and all OS X machines later than Tiger. However, John and his merry men have a very nifty workaround in a thing called SheepShaver. I can run WP on this Intel Mac no problem, or indeed most Classic era programs that require System 9.

Finally (gots to get back to work), my understanding is that many legal shops continue to use WordPerfect (for Windows, natch).
It is beyond weird why Corel hasn't leased or sold the code for their Unix based WP to somebody. Hell, even Apple. For the life of me I don't know why this hasn't happened.
In the old days when Mac had a puny market share, that was one thing; but people are leaving Windows in droves to go to some flavor of Linux or Mac OS. This Unix WP would have quite a sizable market. (Mac OS X is at base Unix...)

A few hours ago, she said the fire was two and a half miles north of her house and the winds had shifted to the south. Smoke was already bad enough that she'd closed the windows and turned on the AC because of her husband's asthma.

“When Barack Obama Jr. was born on Aug. 4,1961, in Honolulu, Kenya was a British colony, still part of the United Kingdom’s dwindling empire. As a Kenyan native, Barack Obama Sr. was a British subject whose citizenship status was governed by The British Nationality Act of 1948. That same act governed the status of Obama Sr.‘s children.
Since Sen. Obama has neither renounced his U.S. citizenship nor sworn an oath of allegiance to Kenya, his Kenyan citizenship automatically expired on Aug. 4,1982.”
That is a direct admission Barack Obama was a British citizen "at birth".
My law suit argues that since Obama had dual citizenship "at birth" and therefore split loyalties "at birth", he is not a "natural born citizen" of the United States. A "natural born citizen" would have no other jurisdiction over him "at birth" other than that of the United States. The Framers chose the words "natural born" and those words cannot be ignored. The status referred to in Article 2, Section 1, "natural born citizen", pertains to the status of the person's citizenship "at birth".
The other numerous law suits circling Obama to question his eligibility fail to hit the mark on this issue. Since Obama was, "at birth", a British citizen, it is completely irrelevant, as to the issue of Constitutional "natural born citizen" status, whether Obama was born in Hawaii or abroad. Either way, he is not eligible to be President. Should Obama produce an original birth certificate showing he was born in Hawaii, it will not change the fact that Obama was a British citizen "at birth".

He wants Congress to allow carmakers to use $25B in energy funds to shore up finances, Dems push access to $700B bailout
David Shepardson / Detroit News Washington Bureau
WASHINGTON --
President Bush wants Congress to move quickly to grant Detroit's Big Three automakers access to a $25 billion federal loan program by not requiring that the money be used to upgrade factories to build more fuel-efficient vehicles
Let me say this loud and clear, "NO F**king Way" should we give the auto industry a loan without need for improvements - so how about NO LOAN AT ALL if that is the way it's going to be. NO LOAN for NO improvements.

The ultimate sore losers. They absolutely can not accept the fact that Clinton lost.
Moreover, not only was Clinton "owed" the nomination this year, Clinton owes THEM another run in 2012.
They remind me of the college Republican zealots that were sent over to Iraq to make it a free market paradise. Like them, the PUMAs seem to believe that they can "create their own reality". They live in a world where Obama used ACORN to steal the election from McCain, and where Sarah Palin is a "Teddy Roosevelt" Republican, ie. a liberal reformer.

The WordPerfect story is actually kind of interesting.
Ashton and a former student of his at Brigham Young, Bruce Bastian, each controlled 49.5% of the WordPerfect company as a partnership. Bruce was, as it turned out, gay. The decision to sell the company to Novell in the early '90's was apparently driven by the need for Bastian to cash out his share in order to pay off the divorce settlement after he came out.
Bastian contributed $1 million to the No on 8 campaign (making the "former owners of WordPerfect" factor a wash) and is apparently one of the pre-eminent funders of GBLT causes in the country.
You can imagine that the words "homosexuality" and "marriage" push a few buttons with Mr. Ashton.

$25 billion has already been pledged to the automakers without conditions. Get not your knickers in a twist.
IIRC, there were conditions. It was to pay for retooling costs to add fuel efficiency. This is one reason why very little of the $25 billion has been distributed to date (the other is that the DOE has yet to issue rules on flex fuels/85% ethanol related to the use of the money, which the automakers don't want to do as widely as Congress has pressed them to do). From the article below, it seems that the automakers don't want to take the money with those conditions on it. It commits them to doing so voluntarily.
They're still lobbying for cash infusions without higher fuel efficiency standards or having to expand the flex fuel part of their fleets.
It's gotten more complicated because of the ethanol lobby:
The Mormons believe that forced marriage and making a dozen kiddies cures teh gai.

Erin,
I'll be your soul sister in the weight efforts. Congrats on riding the bike.
I would have loved to have continued to lose, but the last six weeks have had me on the edge of a cliff, and weight loss wasn't my focus. I'm spiritually regrouping right now. Which is why I'm taking Puck on a LONG walk before the snow flies.
I do note this, though...we gain weight very slowly, usually. But if we don't pay attention, 10 becomes 20 becomes 30 becomes 40...
The good news is that if you focus and keep your eye on the small goals, and your heart aimed at the big ones, weight comes off much more quickly than it goes on.
