Gravatarwhoa what?

magic threads!

GravatarRoubini: "Don't be askeert of China. They are fucking up big-time. They are hurling money into expanding capacity of state-owned enterprises when there is a demand collapse and demand is not going to recover to levels it once was any time soon (or ever)".

That's a paraphrase.

Roubini: "No green shoots, but rather, yellow manure. But manure is productive".

GravatarSomeone has snatched the sheets, I'm sure of it, Certified, Mutant Enemy.

However, I claim this thread in the name of Bell's Two-Hearted Ale.

Which I am not having, at this very moment.

Probably not, but it would be irresponsible not to speculate.

GravatarEw. I read, "Levi Johnson says Palin stripped down for money, family."

As you were.

Gravatar"Levi Johnson says Palin stepped down for money"

There was an unnecessary word there.

I don't think Sarah Palin gives a rat's ass about anyone but herself.

GravatarKarin, Is that were the Methodists have their tent meeting?

Yep, they still put the tents up every summer. I used to live there, like a stone's throw from the tents & the auditorium. Biggest wooden auditorium in the country, I believe, and also one of the biggest pipe organs. They have an huge, awesome used book sale every year, which takes place today & tomorrow. I usually pick up a whole shopping bag of great reading for a few bucks.

GravatarOf to the city for a traditional friday movie marathon.

Bruno, bitches!!!!

Talk to you all tonight...j'espere.

Boren shot back. "There's nothing you can do for me or to me that will influence my decision on this matter." he added. "I'm going to make it on the basis of what I think is right or wrong."

Can you say "stimulus funding"?

The judge's chambers sure don't like to return phone calls.

Particularly in North Jersey.

GravatarHow can you have a "bipartisan" bill if one side will ALWAYS vote "No"?

This is to you, rootless - there is no bipartisanship right now. The Republicans are bound and determined to incrementalize every single Democratic intiative into failure.

We said this at the beginning and before the beginning. Obama will get nothing from the Republicans.

Until they come around, or when hell freeze over, whichever comes first, he can work on his own side, far too many of whom, like yourself, seem to have forgotten that they have all the mandate that they need from the 2006 and 2008 elections, and they are wasting it on the guys who LOST.

The record shows otherwise. Obama has had a positive track record in legislation based on his ability to (a) split the Republican supporters from their "leaders" and (b) shave off the crucial margin.

What I think is hilarious is all the "leftists" who swear by Chomsky and Zinn, but are angry that Obama cannot talk tough and change corporate/military/elite control into the Popular Front. It's as if underneath all the talk about elites and hegemony and "manufactured consent" and so on, they still want to believe in 3rd grade civics.

GravatarOn second thought, I shouldn't be upset with Wyden. The public option will be a joke by the time these Congressional whores get done with it. It will provide the cover for continuing the system of private insurance and private health care that we have now, with the addition of subsidized profits. Fabulous.

When single-payer was kept off the table, like impeachment, the Republic crumbled a little.

Our anti-democratic rulers get what they want from the democratic process often by simple keeping things out of it.

GravatarRMJ--thanks for the link to the Breadline book. One of the leading causes of poor health here is poor diet due in no small measure to the food deserts you mentioned, especially in poor neighborhoods. How exactly do you propose to not let them do what they are paid to do?

I'm as frustrated by slow, halting progress as anyone else. For example, the US ICE operates a hellish kafkaesque prison system where human beings have no rights at all and no redress and there is no oversight. For me, there are a lot of other issues I'd be happy to see fall by the wayside to fix that. However, I realize that I'm not king.

My dear late father used to say that whenever a person's reaction is disproportionate to the stimulus, something else is at work. Keith Olbermann's "Worsting" of Ann Coulter on last night's Countdown [video] is a good illustration of the principle. Olbermann ostensibly awarded Ann his "Worst Person" for what was, after all, a rather mild swipe at Rachel Maddow, a tongue-in-cheek reference to her "raw sex appeal." So what had really gotten under Olby's skin? What caused him to refer to Ann as "putrid and evil"?

UW-Madison: New Google deal boosts access to books
Jul 10th, 2009 | MADISON, Wis. -- The University of Wisconsin-Madison says a new agreement with Google will expand public access to its library collection. The university says readers across the country will be able to preview its books for free and buy access to the full texts online. In addition, universities, colleges and public libraries will be able to offer access to their students through subscriptions.

That would be the logical next step for libraries that are already hurting for money.  ILL service is an expense that could be foregone, the same way that the purchase of journals has been foregone since the creation of JSTOR and its sealed access.

What I also see down this road is a kind of re-implementation of the chained book library - one station, at one location to 'view' digitised (very badly digitised) books.  Add to that Google apparently re-assuming a copyright equivalent level of control over the books and you have just seen the functional elimination of publicly accessible libraries.

Updated: 8:01 p.m.

The Congressional Progressive Caucus has fired Bill Goold, its executive director, leaving the House Democrats’ liberal wing without a staff-level chief as they head into a critical legislative fight on health care.

Goold’s termination was effective immediately. The reasons behind the dismissal are not yet clear. “He’s no longer with the caucus,” CPC spokesman Carl Rauscher said. “It’s a personnel matter and we can’t really discuss personnel matters.” He said the search to replace him is already under way.

The plan is for those 'digitised archives', truly the possession of Google, to replace access to the books themselves, by any means.  The only avenue of access will be to pay Google for the privilege.

Also, if your ILL service is constantly charging such high fees, they are doing so because they're trying to make money on the transaction to support other library functions.  There are ten federally funded ILL services in the country, distributed pretty evenly.  The services are free.

But that would imply that it goes both ways, and it doesn't. I think it's just that the Republicans' whole power structure is based on their reliable ability, abetted immensely by the oligarch-controlled MSM, to tap into ignorant people's fears and prejudices. Whenever the Dems try to Do The Right Thing, they have no difficulty cramming whatever it is into one of those ready-made hate/fear frames. Ah, that's a whole other issue just now.  'Orphan books' - those whose copyright holder 'cannot be located' - or which are ex-copyright - libraries greedy for the Google money have allowed such books to be handed over to Google which, now acting as copyright holder redux, is going to charge for access.  It's a pretty picture.  It's entirely in line with the RIAA and all that ilk.

One of the major reasons behind the establishment of GWPDA was to recapture books and material that had disappeared from public access because of age, library 'weeding' or simple loss - and make them publicly available again, as they once had been.  This is not Google's objective.

GravatarSad to see it come to that. Maybe a new checkbox on our 1040s could direct a dollar of our taxes to a National Public Liberry Fund...

Best damned idea I've heard this week.

Mene, mene, tekel upharsin please write your congress folk!

GravatarLBJ was a sadistic bully who treated people like dirt.

So is Bush.

But's a whole other story.

Gravatarrmj, what im sayin, more specifically, or what i was thisnking, was the creation of the DLC in 1985 was the the recognizable start of a trend in dems since mcgovern to move to the "center" and right now, all the dems are beholden if not to the DLC but to its broad ideas.
euphronius failure

Which I despise, especially since "center" now means "To the right of Attila the Hun."

OTOH, I'm realistic. I wanted McGovern to win in '72. But a President who pledges to create a Dept. of Peace (for example) hasn't a snowball's chance in hell. And I try to be careful what I wish for.

I might get it. OTOH again, I have no problem with Obama's "bipartisanship," because he understands this is not a one-party State (we've had that in Texas; much good did it ever do us) and he doesn't want to simply govern as the "Anti-Bush" (who was quite partisan, while disguising it as non-partisan).

Considering the last 8 years, I like Obama's approach. And, so far, it seems to be pretty effective.

GravatarCrap!

But THAT'S a whole other story.

GravatarPalin: Not Down and Not Out

Human Events ^ | 9-10-09 | Gary Bauer

Like a few other intrepid souls, I have received a lot of grief for my defense of Sarah Palin’s decision to resign the governorship of Alaska. But after a week of consideration, I’d like to amend my position. Not only does Sarah Palin’s resignation not preclude her from running for president in 2012. I would argue that she is now strongest candidate Republicans could nominate. That is not to say Palin wouldn’t have her work cut out for her to prepare for a run. Nor do I presume to know whether Palin even wants to run for office again.

No matter how much you praise Sarah, you'll never get into her pants, Bauer. You should face up to that fact.

GravatarSounds like Google is morphing from Barney into Buckzilla...

GravatarSomehow LBJ pissed off a young Hillary Clinton, I'm sure of it.

The real tests are still ahead, but for the most part I'm still with him. Francis Collins is a bit of a burr in my hide, though.

Early 70s...I used to get paid on Friday and stop off on the way home from work at the now no-longer-there Gimbels Department store and hit their book department.

I'm old I remember when a paperbook could be had for $1.25 or $1.50.

Gravatari have trouble with bipartisanship if it means giving up core progressive principles in order to possibly obtain a few republican votes so a bill can look bipartisan.

That's an awesome testament to the state of the GOP. But, she ain't running, me thinks.

GravatarDamn, Palin is like catnip for stoopid wingers.

GravatarI always regret doing this, but:

For cheap scholarly (and not so scholarly) books, it's very hard to beat abebooks.

They've been bought by Amazon, but you can still deal with them directly.

I've done quite a lot of business with them for really obscure books.

Trouble is, that kind of thing could get out of hand very easily. The 1040 would be 8 pages long within a decade...
