The late lamented Tanta over on Calculated Risk has a good explanation of reverse mortgages.

The idea behind them is to help house-rich, cash-poor senior citizens stay in their homes as long as they want. Since I'll probably end up in that boat, I'm curious about these. What good does a half-million bucks worth of equity in a beloved house do you if you have to leave the beloved house to use it, huh?

SPANISH COURT MAY WIDEN PROBE INTO US FLIGHTS TO GUANTANAMO

Prosecutors at Spain's National Court on Thursday asked judge Ismael Moreno to widen his investigation into alleged US flights transporting
terrorism suspects via Spain to the prison camp in Guantanamo, Cuba.
The prosecutors urged Moreno to question the author of a top secret
Foreign Ministry document which was published by the daily El Pais.

The 2002 document indicates that former prime minister Jose Maria
Aznar's conservative government gave the United States permission to
secretly transport Taliban and al-Qaeda prisoners from Afghanistan via
Spain to Guantanamo.

Are you going to take $100 billion from some other part of the economy, are you going to tax some people to pay for it? Are you just going to print it or borrow it? WASHINGTON — On the campaign trail, Senator Barack Obama offered a pledge that electrified and motivated his liberal base, vowing to “end the war” in Iraq.

But as he moves closer to the White House, President-elect Obama is making clearer than ever that tens of thousands of American troops will be left behind in Iraq, even if he can make good on his campaign promise to pull all combat forces out within 16 months.

I don't know what this means, but the S&P hasn't been this low in over 5 years, and the people that still have paper gains from before that probably aren't selling now. And they still wouldn't be paying capital gains tax for FY08 if they have enough losses to offset it.

Anyway my point is just that capital gains tax isn't going to be a huge revenue driver for the treasury until the market starts going up again.

GravatarWikileaks has released a sensitive 219 page US military counterinsurgency manual 'Foreign Internal Defense Tactics Techniques and Procedures for Special Forces' (1994, 2004), which has been verified to be the official US Special Forces doctrine.

The manual directly advocates training paramilitaries, pervasive surveillance, censorship, press control and restrictions on labor unions & political parties. It directly advocates warrantless searches, detainment without charge and (under varying circumstances) the suspension of habeas corpus. It directly advocates employing terrorists or prosecuting individuals for terrorism who are not terrorists, running false flag operations and concealing human rights abuses from journalists. And it repeatedly advocates the use of subterfuge and “psychological operations” (propaganda) to make these and other “population & resource control” measures more palatable.
