I think I have to disput the idea that all these Republican senators are opposing Gonzales because they actually car about having a competent attorney general. I think it's because some of these US attorneys were their personal proteges, and also because the manner in which they were replaced circumvents their constitutional power of advice and consent. While high-flown concepts such as right and wrong and good governement get scant consideration, the lust for power trumps mere partisan considerations very effectively.
Just read Greenwald's article about the British neo-con conspiracy author Phillips. I can see why this scenario gets credibility. It combines the stunned disbelief of the Rightwingers that there actually really were no WMDs in Iraq with their growing nausea over the utter incompetence and collapse of the Bush regime. Mix in that with their all pervasive paranoia (that which most truly defines a modern Rightwinger) that some James Bond type anti-Amerikan villain entity is controlling the world and you've got yourself a sure fire succesfull conspiracy theory. She's going to be as rich as JK Rowling.

The two reasons that people are calling for incompetent, corrupt Republicans to resign are:
1. They're running the executive
2. They're incompetent & corrupt

Well they've been defending the idiot-in-chief for years (and does anyone really believe they don't know he's a lying idiot?)
And please note that resignation is not an alternative to prosecution--they can be combined in all sorts of creative ways to suit your taste for justice (or vengeance.)
