(From below)
I say take the Bush tax cuts away and more from the rich, and use the money to give tax rebates to lower income folks. Consumer spending by regular people does a hell of lot more for economy than what rich do with it.
Let's put a 90% tax on CEO golden parachutes.
Richard
One more time. If we do not get the cost of gasoline and diesel fuel and home heating under control and start driving these costs DOWN by whatever means we have at our disposal we will have a depression. It does not matter about tax rebates. People do not have enough money to pay for the fuel and energy they need to live.
(And I don't care if you say it isn't possible because that does not matter. If it is impossible we are truly fucked and you might just as well kiss this country and civil order good bye)

There's this excellent article in Dollars & Sense that actually

I haven't had cable for about a decade now, but I watched a ton of it over the last month, while I was holed up in an Extended Stay.
Sweet Jesus, no wonder this country is so fucked up. The nine hours of Nancy Grace per night alone clinches it.
Meanwhile, PBS is reduced to endless maudlin showcases of sixties musicians. And the Discovery Channel is busy promoting exorcism as a solution for teen angst.

It has to do with the way the rules of the game are defined. If there are no rules, of course fraud will surface. That's why regulation is necessary in markets with such severe information asymmetries.

We never watch that but kei's sister did during a winter break thing and lo, kei recognized the plots as actual stories, except that they were exaggerrated far far worse than they had been in real life. Like-- real life: asshole insists he has the right to couple with virgins, so his-low self-esteem wife drugs victims for him, and they winf up killing her. In the show the guy pretends to be a psychic so as to prey on the hopes of the victim's family and steal her panties and also they have to get a nun pregnant and then kill her with a baseball bat and the paedo guy is played with frightening conviction by Martin Short.

Echidne,
You are correct (as usual) Murders or rapes or heinous crimes that are perpetrated and reported on extensively in areas far from where you live SHOULD have no effect on your life. But with the wonder and misery of mass communication, they do.
Previously sensational crimes were still a part of our society and DID dominate our interests but their domination was not as powerful as it is now. Whether it was the Leopold and Loeb Thrill Murders or the Lindbergh Kidnapping, Americans have always "Loved" such stories. News organizations have always tried their best to fill this lust.
But those WERE amazing stories. The stories that dominate our news today are pretty pedestrian in comparison. (Even the story of the day yesterday about the lady who sat on the toilet for two years - what does this have to do with anything? She is obvious deranged and living with some pretty strange people - so why should I be interested?)

I got completely sick of teevee during the Clinton impeachment. In 1999 we moved out of the city and into the country and the only option for getting tv was satelite. I said, how about we try living without it? 10 years later...we are still living without.
I saw Fox news once. It was the leadup to the Iraq war in Feb of 2003. I was in a Dr's office and it was blaring in the corner. Geraldo Rivera was giving the TOP TEN REASONS that Turkey would allow troops to invade Iraq through their country. I remember sitting there with my mouth open. I looked around the room to see if anyone, ANYONE??? was as appalled by what was spewing out as I was.
