Joe's right.

GravatarFrom the last thread, re: tennis:

Maybe the target audience for women's tennis likes the grunting but the target audience for men's tennis doesn't?

That strikes me as very silly. Athletes make noises in the heat of competition because for whatever reasons that's what the athletic performance requires. It's not a marketing ploy.

Geez. Not EVERYTHING is about selling something.

GravatarMore!

GravatarTundra Trash, that one.

GravatarSaw a great quote somewhere, forgot where: a good point guard doesn't take her ball and go home in the middle of a game.

God I hate sports analogies.

GravatarFrom below:

It's pretty funny how one side in our social debate can't begin ot conceive of a family-oriented society that is free of all that authoritarian, sexually repressive, religiosly dogmatic bullshit.
slartibartfast

Their idea of "family" is women subservient and children scared shitless of parents.

You know, the type of family where, when women are "permitted" to vote, she votes for whom hubby tells her.

GravatarMaybe the target audience for women's tennis likes the grunting but the target audience for men's tennis doesn't?

I find the grunting irksom

GravatarMaybe the target audience for women's tennis likes the grunting but the target audience for men's tennis doesn't?

I used to fence at a fairly high level of competition, and there was sort of a grunting culture there. To an extent, it had as much to do with trying to throw your opponent off balance as it did with focusing your own effort. Maybe something like that has developed in womens' tennis.

Gravatar"What we found out this weekend is that hockey moms may be pit bulls, but Hillary Clinton is a hell of a lot tougher than a pit bull."

As my daughter said during the campaign, "Sarah Palin is not fit to carry Hillary's Clinton's purse."

Gravatarbeats me why lady tennis stars grunt a lot

Because they can.
Because they want to.
Who cares?

They are digging deep for more power, literally and figuratively.

I dunno perhaps I'm being grouchy

GravatarJesus Christ, Biden's line of thinking has some serious holes in it.

Start with the fact that the stimulus package was misspent on stoopid shit like retaining Goldmen Sachs as the Master of the Universe.

GravatarTheir idea of "family" is women subservient and children scared shitless of parents

I guess "Patriarchal" did deserve its own place on the list. It's so disheartenoing the way our culture of political debate has degenerated. It seems that the cardinal rule is you can never, ever call anything what it really is. All you do is create a positive or negative frame--sometimes one that is only tangentially related--and then silently insert the actual item under consideration into the center of it. Hence notorious canards like "family values". It's a system based entirely on posturing in a way that produces the desired irrational subconscious associations and in no way of actual debate of the merit of ideas. And it has infected everything, from the weekend bobblehead shows to these lowly threads.

GravatarAnd mimi, who has made a career of being a troll and going places she isn't wanted to insult people.

GravatarWhy don't we talk about what the men wear?

GravatarI love Roddick's teal-blue banana hammock. You?

GravatarYeah, the tea parties are a coalition of nasty racists with anti-government rabble rousers, with a lot of overlap between those groups. People like Cornyn are trying to co-opt the group, but they hate him.

GravatarYes, because you say it is, just like in Alice Through the Looking Glass.

Gravatarand you can trace it back to Gulf War 1

a war which you could watch on TV! 24/7

That's part of it. Mostly it because they're nihilists and hate all government. Any elected official would be booed, except maybe Ron Paul, who is on in government to dismantle it.

I am increasingly convinced that she has a mental disorder of some kind, a real illness, something that requires medication but is probably going untreated. Her behavior is too erratic and you can see from her speeches that the synapses aren't firing quite right, there isn't any logic to her thought processes. She might be bipolar, manic-depressive, something. She makes these rash decisions, and the compulsive exercise might be a form of self-medication.

Favorite line today:

If Sarah Palin had intended to make media heads collectively explode, she couldn’t have planned it better. She called a press conference on short notice, then announced that not only would she not seek a second term as Alaska’s governor, but she intended to resign later this month. All that would remain for her to do is pop some Orville’s, sit back and enjoy the show as the punditocracy begins wildly speculating about that which it does not know.

Gravatara good read:
Katharine Weymouth to WaPo Readers: F**k You

If this is the best that Ms. Weymouth and her lawyers could do in response to a scandal that threatens to destroy the Post's sole journalistic currency - it's reputation for objective reporting - then it is plain that Ms. Weymouth doesn't understand what is at stake. The Post's readers needed Ms. Weymouth to forthrightly issue a Declaration of Independence with respect to the Post's reporting. Instead, they received a letter from her lawyers, as if the Post's readers had sued the Post, or had slipped on a banana peel in the Post's newsroom.

I would urge Ms. Weymouth to try again and to ask her editors, not her lawyers, to help her write another letter to the Post's readers. Because this first letter was nothing more than a calculated exercise in deception worthy of the neocon warmongers who dominate the Post's editorial pages. It is nothing less than a "fuck you" to the Post's readers.

GravatarParent wants warning magnets for teen drivers:

Susie Kessler couldn’t care less if she embarrasses her 16-year-old son, Donne, at least when it comes to his driving. Donne has to drive around with a big magnet on the back of his car that reads “Caution — Newly Licensed.” And if Kessler has her way, your teen driver is going to be embarrassed too. Through the nonprofit she founded, Caution and Courtesy Driver Alliance, the Kennesaw mom has sold about 15,000 of those magnets across the country. Now, working with a Georgia state senator inspired by her campaign, she plans to support a potential bill next session that would mandate use of such “Caution” magnets by all young drivers. Here, Kessler talks about driving, responsibility and the line between smothering and good parenting.

GravatarThe creators of the Father Ted television series have denounced Ireland's proposed blasphemy laws as "insanity" and pledged to support a campaign to repeal them.

Arthur Mathews and Graham Linehan backed moves by a group of Irish secularists to challenge the bill against blasphemy introduced in the Dáil last week. Atheist Ireland said this weekend that it will publish a statement blaspheming all the major religions in Ireland, including Christianity and Islam. The group said it would be a calculated challenge to the law.

Under the Irish constitution, the state is obliged to have blasphemy laws. The bill going through the Dáil would amend the Defamation Act of 1961, which includes blasphemy as a crime. To abolish blasphemy laws, the government would have to hold a referendum to amend the constitution. The duo, who wrote a host of other TV comedies such as Big Train, described the blasphemy law contained in the new bill covering defamation in Ireland as "a return to the Middle Ages".

A friendly crowd -- his biggest since leaving office -- greets the former president on the Fourth of July.
Associated Press
July 5, 2009

Woodward, Okla. -- Former President George W. Bush was greeted by thunderous applause on the Fourth of July as he told thousands of spectators in a rural Oklahoma rodeo arena that the U.S. was "the greatest nation on the face of the earth."

Bush was given six standing ovations as he spoke in GOP-friendly Woodward, a town of about 12,000 residents in northwestern Oklahoma.

About 9,200 tickets were sold for the event -- the biggest crowd for Bush since he left office in January.

Bush spoke of the bravery of injured troops he had met as president, and thanked members of the military for their service. He told the crowd it was nice of them "to give a retired guy something to do."

think of who their senators are.
even after he is convicted, he will still be welcomed in OK.

GravatarBritons should brace themselves for "much more changeable and considerably cooler" weather with rain at times over the next few weeks, weatherman John Kettley said.

As the UK cools off from temperatures which soared above 30C last week, the cult forecaster said "fresher and more typical British weather" was on its way.

Kettley, 56, picked the weekend of August 15 and 16 as the best chance for good weather across the UK after studying a computer analysis based on sea surface temperatures and atmospheric conditions.

Kettley, who featured in the 1988 hit single John Kettley is a Weatherman, said: "The recent hot spell, punctuated by severe thunderstorms, is about to be replaced by fresher and more typical British weather as an Atlantic influence replaces the continental one.

"The first two to three weeks in July are likely to be much more changeable and considerably cooler with rain at times so it could be a wise move to jet off sooner rather than later if you've been waiting for a dip in Britain's weather fortunes before venturing abroad."

GravatarAlistair Darling today refused to rule out a pay freeze for Britain's six million public sector workers after the head of the government's spending watchdog accused party leaders of failing to be honest with people.

Steve Bundred, the chief executive of the Audit Commission, wrote in the Observer that he had not heard any politician admit that "severe pay restraint" was necessary to rebalance public finances.

The chancellor insisted public sector pay must be "fair" to workers but, with inflation at its lowest level in years, appeared to open up the possibility of a freeze.

"Public sector pay obviously has got to reflect prevailing conditions, and in particular inflation has come way down," he said.

"And of course we have got to be fair with regard to people who work in the private sector, many of whom have seen their pay conditions somewhere near freeze."

Speaking to Sky News, Darling said public sector pay policy would be decided in the coming weeks.

This is the same coward who showed up at NOT ONE military funeral.

GravatarWhat do you mean, "our side"?

GravatarWow, I hadn't realized that there are so many Rumsfelds running loose all over Washington D.C..

Remember when Donald Rumsfeld, the "great" Iraq war architect, decided that far fewer U.S. troops were necessary to invade and "secure" Iraq, far less than top U.S. generals were recommending? And when Rumsfeld's idea of "securing" post-invasion Iraq revolved around "securing" only Iraq's oil facilities, including the Oil Ministry building in Baghdad, while the rest of Iraq was looted?

Well, we have seen the same thing happen in these stimulus packages, with far less in federal funds being allocated than recommended by top economic experts and with a large percentage of these funds going toward the elitist, corporatist class even as unemployment levels rise rapidly among working families.

So, the same warped and twisted conservative ideology applied to Iraq is now being applied to the deteriorating economic situation in America.
