everyone is asleep in Chez Moonbootica, except me!

Gravatarmer?

GravatarAhoy-hoy!

Gravatarin this thread, the siren song of trolls will not lead me into the shoals.

GravatarFablous Friday Cat Blogging

GravatarYes, it is, Kid. Cream your jeans.

GravatarI like that Wolf Blitzer/Rudy Guiliani clip on TPM better. They are finally calling him on his shit.

Gravatarhey, I have been saying this for weeks on this comment page and at FDL.
to paraphrase:

Oppose Mukasey on torture, on executive power, on unitary executive nullification of the law and refusal to guarantee action on Congressional subpoenas. If we wanted a monarchy, we didnt need a revolution or a Constitution.
Senators take an oath to uphold it. Bush is challenging you to defend your branch of government.
Separately, look back in history to Watergate, when Dems had real spine. When E. Richardson was nominated as AG after the disgraced Mitchell and Kleindeinst were forced from the AG office, Richardson at his confirmation hearings agreed to appoint a special prosecutor and the terms for that were worked out. I think they even agreed on Archie Cox. You can look it up.
We have perhaps more serious abuses at stake here; certainly they go to the heart of what the Constitution and our country stand for. Any AG nominee should be required to do what Richardson did. We need an independent investigation of lawlessness by this WH and DOJ. The evidence of their abuses has been testified to under oath to your committee.
In 19700-72, Dems had some spine on the SJC. I hope that is still true.

GravatarWe're watching the original The Office right now.

Good stuff.

GravatarI'm so disgusted with the Democrats that I'm voting Nazi party in 2008...

GravatarWell, shit.

Snugglebunny: Your work addy got spammed, I take it? Gave the mail server fits, or some such thing?

No; worse.

I had to send an e-mail out promoting the dean's lecture, next week. Sent a test e-mail to co-worker; it showed the "From:" as the name of the department, as it should have. Sent the actual mail, and the "From:" line read from the dean, herself... which looked pretty self-promoting, duh.

Gravatarbush/cheney and the republicans are succeeding in their criminality ONLY because the democrats are betraying America by letting them.
.

GravatarBush vetoes popular water projects bill

Bush had long threatened to veto the $23 billion bill, targeted for projects including coastal restoration in Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina and improving the Florida Everglades, saying it was too expensive because it had unneeded projects supported by individual lawmakers.

Democrats said they would try to override the president's veto as early as next week. The measure passed both houses of Congress with more than the two thirds majorities needed to override a presidential veto.

White House Press Secretary Dana Perino called the measure "fiscally irresponsible" and said Bush cast the fifth veto of his presidency before leaving for a trip to South Carolina.
http://today.reuters.com/news/ar...TO-UPDATE- 3.XML

bush vetoes money for Louisiana, Florida and some other pretty important water projects supported by more than two thirds of both the house and senate. Of course that means the dems have fail yet again. This is not a bitter mean spirited little jackass practicing jackassery, it’s a dem failure.

Oh and the SC trip is a fundraiser for confirmed bachelor lindsey graham.

GravatarDownloaded the new Radiohead this evening... I like it.

I paid ten bucks for it. Worth it, I'd say.

The first few songs are great, but gets a little weaker after that, IMHO.

GravatarPfft. If we had ever been here before we would certainly know just what to do.

GravatarI dunno, I think I honestly expected this collapse. To tell the truth, the Democrats have not stood for anything: why should they start now?

But isn't this hurting their fundraising? My nephew (the new Buddha) is visiting again and the Democrats called him for money and he read them chapter and verse about not standing against the Republicans and until they did they would not see one thin dime and stuff.

Are the corporations simply taking the place of the people?

Gravatarthe special prosecutor law is kaputt. not more.

there cant be a special prosecutor (Congressional at least) with out new legislation.

i suppose the house and senate could pass resolutions which created a special committee that had a specific prosecutorial intent. is that what they did in Watergate? or was that the House Judiciary subcommitees?

who knows.

GravatarDownloaded the new Radiohead this evening... I like it.

Like the "name your own price" feature, too.

GravatarOT: As if nature were making a small conciliatory gesture for the appalling weather that blighted this year's summer, deciduous trees are bursting into glorious explosions of autumnal red and gold.

Tree experts say the very wet summer and drier autumn that followed have resulted in some of the most spectacular leaf displays in recent times and Britain's Indian summer seems intent on holding on for one final weekend this year.

Visitors enjoying the clement air yesterday at the Westonbirt Arboretum near Tetbury in Gloucestershire, were treated to a feast of autumn colours splashed across the park's trees. Temperatures in the South reached a high of 18C (65F).

GravatarIn the Chicago area? Please consider attending a really excellent talk on Iran, with guest speaker Dr. Bamshad Mobasher, a professor at DePaul University, born in Iran. He is the leader of the Oak Park Coalition for Truth and Justice.

It's Sunday, November 11, at the First United Methodist Church of Downers Grove, 1032 Maple Avenue, Downers Grove, at 6:30.

See www.dupagepeace.org for details.

This is going to be a truly brilliant evening. Questions and comments from the audience will be welcome, and he will cover the 1905 revolution, the 1953 overthrow of Mosaddeq, the 1979 revolution and present day stuff. Please come and tell all!

GravatarMy fear, which I really had dismissed up until this week, is that this election will never be fair and if by some quirk of failed software the Dems win, the Republicans will never leave.

GravatarThe Metropolitan police commissioner Sir Ian Blair was told yesterday that his resignation would not be accepted as the force braced itself for a new report criticising it over the Stockwell shooting.

Len Duvall, a Labour politician who chairs the Metropolitan Police Authority, told the Guardian he would not let Sir Ian quit over the shooting dead of Jean Charles de Menezes: "If he offered his resignation over Stockwell I would not accept it."

Insiders say the force is "very concerned" about its leader coming under more pressure next week when the official report into the errors the Met made that led to De Menezes being shot dead is finally published by the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

GravatarThere was a story out there today about a little town in Tennessee that has run completely out of water due to drought and needs to truck in what they can get. People only have so many hours a day to do the dishes, laundry and fill jugs to provide water for the rest of the day.

I also saw where Atlanta has only 110 days of water left. Sometimes its nice to live 1 mile South of Lake Erie.

GravatarRepeat from the dead thread below:
Too bad Eli never comes here anymore. He's got a great story out of Missouri.
Okay, so: Missouri’s Republican Governor Matt Blunt decides that if it’s good enough for Dubya, it’s good enough for him, and starts deleting e-mails, in direct violation of the state’s sunshine laws. Staff attorney Scott Eckersley points out that breaking the law is, in fact, illegal. So Blunt, of course, fires him.
Since Eckersley wouldn’t keep his fool trap shut, Blunt and his staff set about trying to smear and discredit Eckersley, and claim that he was fired for performance and behavioral reasons, and that he never said anything about the e-mail deletions being illegal.

Now here’s the beauty part: As part of the smear campaign, BluntCo. released a whole bunch of Eckersley’s e-mails to the media… including the one where he warned that deleting e-mails was illegal. Brilliant!

GravatarThe fate of more than 60 Iraqis being held by British forces is in the balance after hearings this week before the law lords of potentially huge significance for the conduct of future international military operations abroad.

The little-noticed hearings were brought by lawyers acting for Hilal al-Jedda, who has dual British-Iraqi nationality and is one of 62 individuals detained indefinitely by British troops in Basra. British military commanders say he is a security risk.

Mr Jedda came to Britain as an asylum seeker in 1992. He says he returned to Iraq after the fall of Saddam to see his family and friends and introduce his wife to them. His lawyers say it is not surprising he knew people suspected of being insurgents, but that does not mean he was in any way involved in planning a terrorist attack.

Limp snausage

Gravatarsoz·zled (sŏz'əld) pronunciation
adj. Slang.

Drunk; intoxicated.

[From sozzle, to splash, loll about, be lazy, from earlier sossle, probably from soss, to splash in mud, fall heavily, of imitative origin.]

GravatarVideo: Clinton takes on Russert, says letter was no cover-up

(3:10 p.m. -- See UPDATE below for the Republican response)

"Breathtakingly" misleading. That's what former president Bill Clinton called a question Tim Russert asked his wife at this week's Democratic presidential candidates' debate. And boy was he mad.

"The implication was that in the last few weeks since she'd been a candidate, I had endeavored to cover up records involving her. You agree with that? That's what people thought when they heard that question," Clinton said. "Here are the facts."

He asserts the letter in question is five years old, involves Hillary only incidentally and requests that the National Archives speed up the release of certain documents, not slow it down. Read more about the controversy here.

Clinton made the comments during an appearance Friday morning on the Microsoft campus with CEO Steve Ballmer. To hear Clinton's impassioned defense in his own words, watch this video by P-I reporter Todd Bishop.

GravatarIf the Democrats in the Senate refuse to demand any such requirement, it will be act that should send chills down the spine of every thinking American.

Snowden was wounded inside his flak suit. Yossarian ripped open the snaps of Snowden's flak suit and heard himself scream wildly as Snowden's insides slithered down to the floor in a soggy pile and just kept dripping out...Yossarian screamed a second time and squeezed both hands over his eyes...

"I'm cold," Snowden wimpered. "I'm cold."

"There, there," Yossarian mumbled mechanically in a voice too low to be heard. "There, there."

Yossarian was cold, too, and shivering uncontrollably. He felt goose pimples clacking all over him as he gazed down despondently at the grim secret Snowden had spilled all over the messy floor. It was easy to read the message in his entrails. Man was matter, that was Snowden's secret. Drop him out a window and he'll fall. Set fire to him and he'll burn. Bury him and he'll rot, like other kinds of garbage. The spirit gone, man is garbage. That was Snowden's secret. Ripeness was all.

"I'm cold," Snowden said. "I'm cold."

"There, there," said Yossarian. "There, there." He pulled the rip cord of Snowden's parachute and covered his body with the white nylon sheets.

"I'm cold."

"There, there." (End of chapter 41 "Snowden," pp. 463-4)

The crowd also called for early parliamentary elections.

GravatarA senior Justice Department official, charged with reworking the administration's legal position on torture in 2004 became so concerned about the controversial interrogation technique of waterboarding that he decided to experience it firsthand, sources told ABC News.

Daniel Levin, then acting assistant attorney general, went to a military base near Washington and underwent the procedure to inform his analysis of different interrogation techniques.

After the experience, Levin told White House officials that even though he knew he wouldn't die, he found the experience terrifying and thought that it clearly simulated drowning.

GravatarMikheil Saakashvili (Georgian: მიხეილ სააკაშვილი (born December 21, 1967) is a Georgian politician and the current President of Georgia. He succeeded Nino Burjanadze, the acting president, on January 25, 2004. Saakashvili was elected to (officially) replace President Eduard Shevardnadze, who stepped down in Georgia's 2003 bloodless Rose Revolution, led by Saakashvili and his major political allies, Burjanadze and Zurab Zhvania.

Some non-Georgian sources spell his name via the Russian as Mikhail. In Georgia, he is commonly known as "Misha," a hypocorism for Mikheil. It is also transliterated Mixeil Saakašvili.

He is married to Sandra E. Roelofs, of Dutch origin, and has two sons, Eduard and Nikoloz. He is reported to be fluent in some languages, including Georgian, English, French, Russian and Ukrainian.

I would not, however, have left him in, if he did not have some kind of function."

GravatarFred Waldron Phelps, Sr. (born November 13, 1929) is the pastor of the Westboro Baptist Church (WBC), an independent Baptist church in Topeka, Kansas. Phelps is also a disbarred lawyer and founder of the Phelps Chartered law firm. WBC is listed as a "hate group" by the Southern Poverty Law Center. He is known for preaching with slogans and banners denoting phrases such as "Thank God for 9/11", "God hates fags," "AIDS cures fags," and "Fags die, God laughs (or mocks)," and claims that God will punish homosexuals as well as people such as Bill O'Reilly, Coretta Scott King, Ronald Reagan, and Howard Dean, whom his church considers "fag-enablers"

Well, if you are talking about the liqueur, the best buzz is that it is a fake, or at least unproven

Whereas Dom Perignon really did invent champagne & the Carthusians (monks but not Benedictines) really do make Chartreuse (which I really like)

I also recommend "Into Great Silence" (documentary about the Carthusians) -- my cousin was critical because it did not explain the importance of the Divine Office & the different "hours" in the course of the day, but I think that a consequence of letting the film speak for itself (explanations can really get in the way of documentaries that are supposed to be self explanatory)

GravatarThere are things about which it is possible to equivocate. Torture isn't one of them.
ProfWombat

We've forfeited basic human outrage at other nations waterboarding American citizens, by being iffy about this subject.

You're correct. The question really isn't so much what constitutes torture. It's whether you're generally cool with torture or not.

Lincoln described it well, when he said that those so emphatic about the perpetuation of slavery ought to have it practiced upon themselves, to find out if it alters their opinion on the subject.

GravatarSallyh is right -- Benedictine is too sweet -- hence B&B to cut the edge!

I went to a talk on using torture in early 2002. There were only a handful of us in the audience who didn't raise our hands when asked if we would support torture as long as it didn't happen within US borders.

Of course the speaker wasn't specific about what torture is or does, justhad the audience convinced the Church committee was why US intelligence hadn't been able to stop 9/11.

catholic school. you know.

GravatarProfWombat,

I have been kind of depressed the last couple of days but my realization has been building over the last several months. I have had my hopes - as slim as they were - dashed again and again by the Democrats until they really do not exist any more.

My personal epiphany came on the day of the Petraeus Hearing. There was a protest by the Code Pink Ladies (Patriots in every sense of the word) and the Congressman in charge of the hearing, Ike Skelton, demanded that they be removed. Now, the ladies protesting knew they would be removed. They expected this. The congressman had to have them removed: that is his function as well. The decorum must be maintained, everyone understands this. But what he did and the relish with which he did it sent cold shivers down my spine and they have not left yet.

I looked through the television and I saw the hatred and contempt in his eyes. I did not expect this and I did not want to see this. The play was ongoing and should have completed its run without rancor. But he HATED these women. These patriots who were expressing their contempt for the man who was in charge of lying for the president. They are citizens of this country. That is their RIGHT. You can disagree with what they say. You can even disagree with their methods but you CANNOT disagree with their RIGHT to say it. He did. The venom in his eyes was the same as the venom in the cold eyes of the Nazis.

It is, because the independent counsel statute was allowed to expire, in no small part because of Ken Starr's excesses. It wouldn't surprise me if discrediting the whole idea of an independent counsel, an idea that was a reaction to Nixon's excesses, was part of Mr. Starr's job description.

Boy, are those fuckwads going to be karmically frustrated when they can't use an independent counsel against the next President Clinton.

GravatarThe list of drooling thigh rubbing panty sniffers grows:

"Russert: Senator Clinton, I'd like to follow up, because in terms of your experience as first lady, in order to give the American people an opportunity to make a judgment about your experience, would you allow the National Archives to release the documents about your communications with the president, the advice you gave?

Because, as you well know, President Clinton has asked the National Archives not to do anything until 2012."
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/2152...1528787/page/8/

There is russert leading the panty raid. obama and edwards are also chasing after Hillary's used undergarments. Now karen tumluty sticks her nose in with a factless fact check:
"Obama campaign manager David Plouffe has emailed a letter to supporters going after Hillary Clinton for refusing to open the records of her days as First Lady."
http://www.time-blog.com/ swampla...the_latest.html

Oh why won't Hillary open her panty drawer... russert actually frames the question as getting an "idea your experience as first lady." karen and the rest of the thigh rubbers think that means personal communications between a husband and wife. Hillary's healthcare records? No problem. More than 10,000 pages have already been released. Just about anything else Hillary worked on as First Lady? Come and get. What’s on hold? Communications between a husband and wife. And that’s what has the panty sniffers panties in a bunch.

Bill Clinton's letter asking the national archive to release his papers, except for "communications between the President and First Lady and their families":

GravatarEchidne,

Not to be an asshole (though I most certainly am at times) but what makes you think that a rational decision based on rational thought gleaned after rational observation of mountains of data interpreted rationally and all leading to the same RATIONAL conclusion makes one a candidate for chemical correction?

If I am wrong in my analysis, please show me the logical error. I have analyzed, read, thought, and researched. I have watched our leaders enrich themselves and abandon all pretense of caring about the law, the constitution, or the American people. Honestly, they do not even pretend anymore, do they? Nancy Pelosi answer as to why she was helping raising money for the DINO was that he is an incumbent and that is what she does.

The question about his loyalty to Democratic values never even made it into the place in her mind where it might even be considered.

Honestly, there is too much chemical happiness in our society. We need to get people to turn off their TVs and IPods and Computers (me too, here) and get motivated to throw the bastards out because they sure as hell are not leaving of their own volition.

DWD,

I'm going to say this to you as a friend and as an empath. You've recently changed and become much more negative, markedly so. I wonder if this has more to do with some medication that you're taking than with any change in the outside world. Yeah, things are bad. At almost any point in history, people could look around and go "Shit, stuff is fucked up." Women couldn't vote, African Americans were lynched, the mob ruled the cities, the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl ruined thousands of lives. And, yes, right now we've got big problems. But you sound seriously depressed to me and seem to be taking things way too hard for it to be good for your own mental health. Can you talk to a doctor about this? See if any of your meds can lead to depression? When I was through w/ tamoxifen for the breast cancer, they put me on Femara. Depression isn't even listed as a side effect of Femara, but i fell into a terrible depression and that was the only precipitating even that my GP and I could find. My GP talked to my oncologist who said that she'd seen the Femara throw another woman into depression. They stopped the Femara and put me on an anitdepressant for about a year. It really helped me. I just hate to see you (1) in so much personal pain and (2) bringing down everyone else around here.

Why would Bush appoint someone who wasn't a loyalist?

Why would the Senate refuse to confirm? Bush will never appoint anyone who would hold him accountable. We've already established that when Bush plays Chicken with Congress, they cave.

Sad, really.

GravatarDWD: so how are you eating? Sleeping? You taking pleasure in anything at all? Feeling sexy, morning erections? Drinking more than 2-3 a day, max? Doing drugs a doc hasn't prescribed you? Relations with friends, family OK, or are you withdrawing?

To me, you sound pissed appropriately about politics, though I happen to disagree with your sense of hopelessness, while suffering personal losses and problematical medical interventions of inconsistent efficacy, about which you are also royally pissed. Then there's clinical depression, for which the above paragraph is a brief inventory, and which is also a common concomitant to chronic pain syndromes, which you also labor under. Sometimes meds help with the latter.

GravatarA sign of hope: The other night at choir rehearsal, on the break, one of the young women who's new to us thsi year glanced up at the calendar by the water fountain and said, "When does [our state] vote? And I was pleased to report that Illinois votes on February 5, and I can help get her registered.

Gravataryoda: you've been eloquently projecting your deep concern regarding the torture issue... feh... calling it merely an 'issue' seems so wrong.

most days it seems that so many things are completely upside down in this country that it is impossible to even know where to begin to speak out.

perhaps that is their strategy. keep things so messed up one doesn't even know where to begin.

when we (hopefully) get to the bottom of what went on, i believe it will go down in history as a very dark time...

That's pretty neat. I was at a party tonight w/ a lot of strangers. I made a comment about how Molly Ivins called Bush "Shrub" and everyone in the room laughed, nodded their heads, etc. We are making progress. It's slow and it's two steps forward, one step back, but it's progress.

GravatarBut Hecate, again: show me where I am wrong.

I understand that being a downer is not all that pleasant and I have to admit that the last two days of filling out the forms for the Social Security Administration requiring me to go through EVERYTHING that happened to me in the last two years was a very HARD experience for me.

But be that as it may, the truth remains that what I am saying, as far as I can determine, is the TRUTH. My congressman is a perfect example. As a Republican with tenure he should have been able to at least secure some funding for SOMETHING in this area that might alleviate the pain of the people here, he has not. Hoekstra has failed to do one bloody thing to help Western Michigan as far as I can tell. Why? He is part of the GOP mafia. If he does not want to represent this area, who is working for? Dick DeVOs and AMWAY and The PRince Corporation where he once worked? Could be.

The three hundred thousand people who own more than half of this country are running this country for their benefit and we are nothing more than serfs to the land that can be thrown away.

If I am wrong then show me. I long to have some hope. Did you read these two paragraphs from the New York Times today? "Of those 103,000 jobs, 14,000 were in the construction industry, and 25,000 were in finance. Does anyone believe that all those new companies are being created in those industries now? (You can see the government’s explanation for this here.)

At times of inflection, these adjustments can be wildly off, as I argued a month ago. I think we hit such a point this spring. A couple of years from now, after all the adjustments are made, this year’s job performance will look far less impressive.

Over the last 12 months, the government’s current numbers indicate that the private sector added an average of 115,000 jobs a month. But 80 percent of those jobs came from the statistical adjustments.

It is also worth noting that the govertment’s other survey, of households, has not found those jobs. Over the last 12 months, it has found about 50,000 new jobs a month. In October, it found employment declined by 250,000 jobs."

Think about what they are saying. Instead of creating 166,000 jobs as the government claimed, they actually LOST 250,000 jobs. That is a discrepancy of 416,000 jobs. That is an outright lie. And the news media dutifully read it.

We have no hope of redemption without truth and people who speak the truth are downers and in need of psychological help and medication.

GravatarWhy has the middle class allowed itself to dissolve without a fight? It's shameful beyond words, considering how many died in order to establish a middle class in the United States.

I think most of here have personal histories with major depression. we love you and are concerned.

GravatarWhy has the middle class allowed itself to dissolve without a fight? It's shameful beyond words, considering how many died in order to establish a middle class in the United States.

Not dead yet, but going that way. I think the trend is not visible that easily and class-awareness is poor and people tend to assume that bad things happening to them are either their own fault or the fault of one or two assholes.

Naomi Klein has a lot to say about the disappearing middle-class, too. I will find out if I agree or not, but banana republics usually have a small rich elite and lotsa poor buggers and we are heading that way.

Gravatar"I think most of here have personal histories with major depression."

GravatarWatching a BBC tv series called UXB where the people curse the bombs falling on London and the disruption in their lives.

Our bombs are not physical but we feel each blow the neocons land on our country and Constitution. We have come out of an unusually long period of peace for the U.S. We have forgotten most people of the world face bombs and disruption in their lifetimes more than once.

More and more Americans are becoming aware of the horrors of the Bush administration. Things are unraveling around the edges as more and more loyal Bushies seek time with their families.

Our nation will survive this and be stronger. (Although we may need to slap some sense into the Democrats on the way.)

GravatarI think the cheap fecklessness of the Democrats is a real soul destroyer because it makes their supporters feel like chumps. But I cheer myself by recalling that weak, pompous, dishonest as she is, Nancy Pelosi is not Demonic Tom Delay.

----
Fourteen White House reporters were given a rare hour of access to President Bush on Monday, but the issues they discussed won't be making any headlines -- the session was all off-the-record. ...

An additional nine reporters were invited to the Oval Office on Thursday to "preview" President Bush's speech to the Heritage Foundation, in which he defended attorney general pick, Michael Mukasey, and characterized "some in Washington" as listening more to MoveOn.org and the anti-war group Code Pink than to "warnings of terrorists like Osama Bin Laden." ...
----

GravatarA useful counterexample was Molly Ivins, who never spoke less than the truth and was extraordinarily clearsighted about the country's and the world's problems. It was part of her gift to speak truth to power with humor and ebullience. She also was dying from metastatic inflammatory breast cancer for the better part of a decade, too.

It's unfair to suggest that people are ganging up on you as a truth-teller, hence a downer, or suggesting that drugs or some other therapy are inevitably the answer, though depression is indeed fairly effectively treated these days. Hang in there and take a deep breath. Most everybody on this board gives a shit about you, while sharing 90% or more of your opinions, which is all anybody gets. Please give it a bit of thought.

D'ja fall in love?

GravatarI tend to agree with DWD.

If you're not depressed, you're not paying attention.

Sometimes persisting in hope, which is dashed again and again and again, is merely another name for denial.

GravatarYou are right, I am losing my sense of humor. I just need something to happen that is good for America. Is that too much to ask? One victory.

And filling out the disability forms did cause a major bout of depression (if you have never done this, it is a very minute and exacting process.) I am figuring it took me nearly eight hours. They wanted to know every doctor, every test, every drug, the motivations for each test and efficacy of each procedure and the reasons it failed or worked. In other words I had to relive each medical experience since the day I hurt by neck including all of the heart procedures. Very very disheartening.

Thank you for concern. But I will be fine. I just am tired of losing all of the time. We cannot seem to win even the smallest battle. This Attorney General will be no better than the last one. Bush is a complete and utter fool. Iran will be attacked. More people will die. The news media will continue to lie. Americans will continue to care about football and anything else that will serve as Aldous Huxley's SOMA to keep them from actually THINKING.

GravatarMore and more Americans are becoming aware of the horrors of the Bush administration. Things are unraveling around the edges as more and more loyal Bushies seek time with their families.

I've noticed in recent times, that there are fewer and fewer defenders of the Bush policies. Mention torture, and instead of "hell yeah" or "go USA" there is a loud silence. Most the public no longer supports this, only a few die hards (those brain-dead, and clinically insane?).

GravatarI wish I could afford despair, but we have kids now, so there is naught but hope now.

anger, yes, but no more despair.

GravatarYes, and sexist, too. But it still did some good.

Precisely. And, next time around, it won't be so racist, sexist, etc. The labor movement did a shitload of good at great cost and is worth studying. Hoffa got his start the day that a load of highly perishable strawberries were delivered and needed to be trucked out immediately. Pressure points.

GravatarParts of the labor movement were racist, and parts, like Randolph's Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, way in front of the rest of the country. And corruption was a problem in labor, as, indeed, it was in business, religion and elsewhere in the country's life.

I don't claim moral exceptionalism for the labor movement. Hell, I'm from an old lefty household that viewed Samuel Gompers' no-strike pledge as the workings of the devil. But the fact is that, as corporations grow larger and more powerful, countervailing powers such as unions and governments become even more vital.

GravatarI will be laid up for about a week.

You're thinking like a republic and that's so passe.

GravatarWell, I am heading off for bed. And Hecate, of course I am depressed. I know I am. My question is this: if the reasons for my depression are legitimate reasons for depression, doesn't that make my depression a rational response to stimuli?

Look at it from my perspective: I now have to do the one thing I NEVER wanted to do; I have to go before the government and beg to have them certify me as a damaged individual. Do you know how bad that makes a person feel? I am a proud person who has alway done what is necessary. I worked in a foundry at extremely hard physical jobs for thirteen years because that was the only job I had.

I taught in the worst school district in the state of Michigan (by whatever criteria you choose to assess them by) for twenty two years because it was my task to do so. I have never shirked my duty in my entire life. I have always done what is necessary. Now I cannot.

And then I have to prove I cannot. Why? Isn't the fact that I am no longer doing it enough? If there were any way in this world for me to go to work, don't you think I would? And here I have people looking at me like I am lazy or shiftless or something.

Then I have the constant pain that never actually leaves. I wake up several times during the night with my arms numb and I have to get up and move around for a while until the feeling comes back.

I care about people and the news is just grim all of the time. I cannot watch television anymore. It is nothing but a bunch of pathetic lies designed to keep people in the dark. If I actually think about what we are doing to people I just start crying.

And yes, I am depressed. The last time I went to psychologist he told I was the most rational person he had ever met in his life. I believe my rationality still wins out.

But you are right, I have to find some way to put this out of my mind. I am trying but it is hard. Pain robs joy. It is a rule.

But thanks for caring, I appreciate it very much and I love this place and its people. (Even the youngsters. )

Gravatarsorry, the reason i pined out that the american labour mvement is because we were looking back at them for guidance.

i dont know - the civil rights movement loks a lot better to me.

Good stuff. I think I'll have it for breakfast tomorrow, too.

Gravatarnutroots and their fellow travelers want to cap on their "civil rights" success and extend their power by extending the notion of "civil rights" into infinity.

Steinem helped start it: "make the personal political"--another way of expressing hyperactive socialism, or communism.

As usual, she had no idea what she was talking about.

Certainly for the mine owners it was all about money.

For the Pinkerton's it was about the fear of socialists and communists. It really was as base as the hatred of the people, not necessarily because of the color of their skin, or even their country of origin. It was a lot about political ideology.

Gravatar "make the personal political"--another way of expressing hyperactive socialism, or communism.

Goddess, you are an idiot and you've got your quote wrong. The realization that the personal IS the political was one of the founding realizations of modern feminism. And it's every bit AS true today as it wa back in the 70s when Ms. Steinham was only one of many who helped women to realize that they weren't alone, that the things that made them miserable were societal issues and not personal problems and that political action was a great way to address many of those issues.

GravatarFor the Pinkerton's it was about the fear of socialists and communists.

And, for some of the Pinkerton's, just as for some of the Nazi guards and some of the Roman footsoldiers and for some poor saps wearing American uniforms right now in Iraq, it was about getting a paycheck any way that they could and feeding their kids and they looked at their hungry kids and decided to do "whatever it took" to feed them. Most of the Pinkertons were also poor, uneducated, subject to a lack of opportunity. I'm not trying to excuse them. In my home, when I was growing up, there wasn't anything -- anything -- worse that you could call someone than "scab."

GravatarCitizens, that is, persons who are citizens, have certain obligations of citizenship that are generally taken up by grownups as the just exchange for the benefits of living in a decent society. They get drafted, and sometimes die a long way from home. They pay taxes. They obey the laws or go to jail. And like that.

Corporations, which are legal persons, also benefit greatly from societal structures and have obligations of citizenship as well. These are not, of necessity, in conflict with making a profit in fiduciary duty to stockholders; quite the opposite, if a long view is taken.

However, unlike your examples, the Pinkerton's were today's Blackwater. They were a private entity, that just happened to be given police powers by corrupt public officials in some areas, and in others, public officials turned a blind eye, both because they sympathized with them, or the mine owners, were owned by one or the other, and chose not to do anything.

I understand that the US government didn't have the FBI, but there was a military that was permitted to operate in the western territories pretty much freely.

While I have no doubt that there were probably a few who went to work for the Pinkerton's because they were desperate for a job, I don't think it was that many.

GravatarSo I try to make real points and in return get straw men, non sequiturs, excluded middles and now grief over my choice of words.

So I'm done, absent more thoughtful opposition.

I suppose you guys are correct to a point, but in the first fifty years of the last century, the labor movement was just about the only cultural entity where a woman and/or a person of color could enjoy not only equality, but leadership with white males. Let's also not forget the advancements in wages, working conditions and hours of labor which the unions were crucial in obtaining, and which helped our parents to survive with dignity.

We'll see, but I am not hopeful. We will have Mukasey, and it will be Gonzales all over again. Doing whatever it takes to protect the criminal mafia in the White House.
