The government has reduced allocations earmarked for the Antiquities Department and currently hundreds of significant sites are without proper protection, said Ali Kadhem.
Kadhem is a senior antiquities official in southern Iraq where most valuable Mesopotamian treasures are situated.
He is currently in charge of antiquities in the southern Province of Nasiriya, the birth place of the Sumerian civilization, which flourished there some 5,000 years ago.

Kadhem says the money is insufficient since there are more than 10,000 archaeologically significant sites in Iraq.

Neither the command nor jump seat captain had seat belts on and they accidentally feathered No. 1, 2 and 4 engines when they hit the controls with their heads. No one realized it at the time but the feathering reduced power and allowed the co-pilot, who was strapped in, to pull out of the dive 350 feet from the ground.

If the media pointed out that so many Iraqis support Sadr because he's a nationalist who wants the oil nationalized, outside influence removed (Iran, AQ), then Americans might have a better understanding of what's happening there. It's just like in Vietnam when we installed and supported the most unpopular regimes.
