OT: The ancestors of humans, apes and monkeys may have taken to the trees because of their small body size.
Scientists have long wondered why early primates inhabited forest canopies, given that climbing appears to consume more energy than walking.
US researchers studied primates climbing and walking on treadmills.
They say there was no difference in energy consumption for small primates, giving clues to how their ancestors entered the trees 65 million years ago.
Dr Jandy Hanna of Duke University, Durham, North Carolina, said the data suggested that the earliest primates were able to exploit a new environment without added cost if they remained small.

The ministry, in a statement, added that Iraq has been subjected to one of its worst droughts in recent history this year.
Wheat and barley yields may not exceed one million tons, the ministry added.
Iraq needs up to four million tons of wheat to meet domestic produce and at least two million tons of barley used mainly as animal feed.

That's true. Could be that they thought they'd distanced themselves enough from it.
I always got the sense that they were trying to use the GOP jujitsu: Take your own achilles heal, and project it on to your opponent. A la Bush, Nat'l Guard, Swiftboating Kerry. The HRC NAFTA/Ohio play also comes to mind.

Some 50 protesters, clad in orange jumpsuits and black hoods to emulate the infamous photos of prisoners in Iraq, picketed the Boalt Hall graduation today, demanding that UC Berkeley's law school fire Professor John Yoo for his reported authorship of the Bush administration's policies on torture.
"We want to see him fired and disbarred for being a war criminal," said Anne Weills, an Oakland attorney representing the National Lawyers Guild. "Academic freedom stops when you intend to harm or injure somebody."
Figuring I'd get Atrios a little cash, I clicked through the ad, and got to "Heritage House," which is apparently an operation of something called "Victory Won LLC." Heh. From their web site:
Our Mission
We are committed to the sanctity of life at all stages and to the traditional values of the institution we call the family. Because we value human life above all things our number one priority is serving you.
Due to the unstable and uncertain times our world offers we are dedicated to serve the Pro-Life movement with solid and unchanging convictions of the heart. These convictions help to make us leaders in meeting the needs of Pro-Life and Pro-Family organizations by providing quality materials, at the best prices, with superior service.
Your satisfaction is our responsibility and our guarantee. We understand and appreciate that we make a living by what we do, but we make a life by what we give. Together we move toward achieving our goals. By working together, good work becomes great work.
With passion, pride and purpose we will help you make our world a better place to be, by saving babies and serving families.
Our Statement Against Violence
We oppose any form of violence in the name of Pro-Life and believe the very term is the antithesis of violence. As Christians, we are called to abhor the sin of abortion, yet to love all of God's people. This is not a love that overlooks wrong, rather, it recognizes the worth of every individual. Christ died for the born and the unborn. If we offer violence and hatred, how are we any different than the rest of the world? If we, instead, offer the love of Christ, then we give our enemies a glimpse of God.
"Shouldn't we all take a strong stand against abortion?' Of course! And to Pro-Lifers around the country, the violence at clinics is sickening. Yet, that violence no more negates the moral wrong of abortion than the violence of the Civil War negated the moral wrong of slavery. As long as innocent human beings are being legally killed in this nation, the Pro-Life movement will fight for their right to life - please do it peacefully.
Our History
On January 22, 1974 Virginia and Ellis Evers ran across a full page ad in their local newspaper in San Diego, California. Prominent in the ad was a picture of the tiny feet of a ten week old unborn baby held between a man's fingers and thumb. Inspired by the remarkable photo, Virginia Evers felt these little feet would be the ideal Pro-Life symbol. With love and dedication for the unborn, Virginia designed the "Precious Feet" lapel pin.
In 1979, at a world-wide symposium in Dublin, Ireland the "Precious Feet" were named the "International Pro-Life Symbol." Since that time over 11,000,000 have been distributed throughout the world.

The future of the Republican Party.
Former Republican presidential contender Mike Huckabee, interrupted on Friday by a loud crash as he spoke to the National Rifle Association, joked that the noise was Democratic candidate Barack Obama falling off a chair as he dodged a gun aimed at him.
"That was Barack Obama. He just tripped off a chair. He was getting ready to speak and somebody aimed a gun at him, and he dove for the floor," Huckabee told the NRA convention in Louisville, Kentucky, in comments that aired on CNN.
I'm not kidding. Huckabee's people are planning to do what the Goldwater folks did after '64 -- infiltrate the party and take it over.
Be afraid...

While they are scary, and there have been Christian colleges established to develop and nurture young politicians into the conservative mindset, one thing you have to remember is that most people do get that the fundies are batshit insane.
They're still fringe, and they're not reasonable.
Fortunately, the pendulum is swinging back to the center, and, when Obama is elected, to the left. Liberal activism is the only activism under which the common man thrives; conservative activism is regressive and suppressive.

Put another way, the family Bush doesn't spring to mind when the words sacrifice and duty arise.
Kennedy fortune: built on rum running and stock manipulation.

Won't be back until much, much later, so allow me two final pathetic blogwhores.

Of this I have little doubt. The fundies have been used for the last 30 years by the country club reactionary GOP, and they're not happy about it.
The Goldwaterites became the Reaganites (see the worship of "The Speech") and took over the GOP from the Eastern Liberal (as in economics) Establishment types in the 60's/70's. Ascendant in the 80's and 90's, they though that the deserting coward would be a splendid figurehead. What they didn't count on was how my personal fortune centric their designated puppetmaster would be.

Glenn: "In one of the most repellent columns one will ever read, syndicated columnist Kathleen Parker defended Fry's claim that Obama is something other than "a full-blooded American.""
Full blooded - is that what it is called? Sounds like supremely ignorant to me.

Blut und Boden doesn't work as a basis for patriotism in the United States. Why is why the Parker skank is so totally wrong.
Our patriotism is about an ideal of governance, and has been from the start. The Founders were all about a new way of ordering the world, one that discarded idiocy like "Divine Right" which retroasswipes like Scalia are in love with.

"We would just cringe. Ugh. Such an out-of-touch corporate run kind of campaign--exactly what you'd expect from Mark Penn. He did fine during his time in the Clinton White House. But running a campaign to capture the nomination in a change environment is something he had never done. Just look at what he did for Joe Lieberman!"
