did Mr. No EarMarks lie again?
President Bush often denounces the propensity of Congress to earmark money for pet projects. But in his new budget, Mr. Bush has requested money for thousands of similar projects.
Multimedia
Presidential ProjectsGraphic
Presidential Projects
He asked for money to build fish hatcheries, eradicate agricultural pests, conduct research, pave highways, dredge harbors and perform many other specific local tasks.
The details are buried deep in the president’s budget, just as most Congressional earmarks are buried in obscure committee reports that accompany spending bills.
Thus, for example, the president requested $330 million to deal with plant pests like the emerald ash borer, the light brown apple moth and the sirex woodwasp. He sought $800,000 for the Neosho National Fish Hatchery in Missouri and $1.5 million for a waterway named in honor of former Senator J. Bennett Johnston, a Louisiana Democrat.
At the same time, Mr. Bush requested $894,000 for an air traffic control tower in Kalamazoo, Mich.; $12 million for a parachute repair shop at the American air base in Aviano, Italy; and $6.5 million for research in Wyoming on the “fundamental properties of asphalt.”

Jeeves stories are incredibly difficult to adapt for stage/screen/TV, because the charm of Wodehouse is in his descriptive language, not so much in the dialogue. I think he's the greatest comic writer in English since Shakespeare, greater than Wilde, but then, I'm nobody.... There used to be a vogue for Jeeves and Bertie among the young and entitled in Washington when I lived there circa 1990, but it was, predictably enough, confined to trying to emulate the way Bertie Wooster dressed and enjoying the idea of servants.

The press criticized Hillary when her daughter avoided them and tried to stay out it. There were remarks from the press along the lines of "what, doesn't your own daughter support you?" Then, when her daughter gets in it and HIllary defends her she's still wrong. I think that majority of voters are right.

Holy shiite - I'm not a big Janis Joplin fan, but this performance is tremendous:
Ben Wallace-Wells's Rolling Stone article on Obama's radical roots has a bit about how Power came to work with Obama in the Senate.
I'm going to go read that link.
What she said was that shortly after Obama was sworn into the Senate she got a call from Obama's office saying that he had read her book on genocide (a Pulitzer Prize winner) and could a meeting be arranged?
The meeting began at 6pm and went on for four or five hours. Power said Obama "interrogated" her about the book at an amazing depth.
She heard herself saying, at some point: "So... can I quit my job at Harvard and come intern in your office?"
And she took a sabbatical and that's exactly what she did.
Now I'll go read your link.
Did I mention that she's really hot? I think she'd be a terrific speaker at EschaCon. Prolly fun to party with, too...

She was born 11/42, so she was just under the wire for teenage years, just shy of turning 20. He was born 8/4/1961.
Picture of his maternal grandparents with their young daughter, his mother Sydney Ann Dunham. Obama definitely favors Grandfather Dunham.

Well, I'm suggesting that Obama does not have the establishment support needed to become the nominee.
Obama has plenty of establishment support. And if he were to become the nominee, he'd have even more.
How can one possibly avoid concluding that you are consumed with identity politics, or at least the politics of identity? That sucks, as do you. Your continued support of your favorite candidate, who sucks, will ensure that the Party splits, that we lose the election, that cats and dogs will live together, that sexism and racism will endure forever, and that American Cheese – the Cheese of Patriotism – will no longer be available in portions individually and lovingly wrapped in plastic. Thanks a lot, asshole.
Because, after all, what is crucial is that we find exactly the right person in order to shape our movement. What would be stupid (ha!) would be to strive to build a movement that might instead influence our leaders. What on earth could possibly the danger in placing all of our eggs of hopes and dreams for a better life for ourselves and our kids in the basket of a single American Politician? Whenever has one of those people failed us? My favorite candidate, clearly, may be safely trusted to carry that basket into a Better Tomorrow. Your favorite candidate, who sucks, will likely drop the basket, break the eggs, and then fuck the shells.
Oh my god. My candidate sucks!

Bio article about Ann Obama, nee Stanley Ann Dunham, from the ChiTrib.
Their high school class was an in-between generation. The Beat generation had passed, and the 1960s era of protest was yet to begin. Classmates of Dunham -- Wall, Blake, Hunt -- felt they were on the cusp of societal change, the distant early warning of the '60s struggles over civil rights, women's rights and war.
"If you were concerned about something going wrong in the world, Stanley would know about it first," said Chip Wall, who described her as "a fellow traveler. . . . We were liberals before we knew what liberals were."
One classmate, Jill Burton-Dascher, said Stanley Ann "was intellectually way more mature than we were and a little bit ahead of her time, in an off-center way."
SNIP Stanley Ann began classes at the University of Hawaii in 1960, and shortly after that, Box received a letter saying that her friend had fallen in love with a grad student. He was black, from Kenya and named Obama.
About that same time, another letter crossed the Pacific, this one heading to Africa. It was from Barack Obama Sr. to his mother, Sarah Hussein Onyango Obama. Though the letter didn't go into great detail, it said he had met a young woman named Ann (not Stanley). There wasn't much on how they met or what the attraction was, but he announced their plans to wed.
The Dunhams weren't happy. Stanley Ann's prospective father-in-law was furious. He wrote the Dunhams "this long, nasty letter saying that he didn't approve of the marriage," Obama recounted his mother telling him in "Dreams." "He didn't want the Obama blood sullied by a white woman."
SNIP Six months after they wed, another letter arrived in Kenya, announcing the birth of Barack Hussein Obama, born Aug. 4, 1961. Despite her husband's continued anger, Sarah Obama said in a recent interview, she "was so happy to have a grandchild in the U.S."
These two also had a little variety show called "A Bit of Fry and Laurie." The pieces of it I've seen were pretty funny.
