GravatarI was just thinking it's a little/no sleep night for more than a couple of us.

I'd say "no flirting!" but I'm too tired to code it in bold.

I'm off, dear Batties. Be excellent to one another.

Why would I do that? I'm a pink man, who lives in the Arizona desert. Nighttime here is nice. I get some sun, but ration it carefully. Too much and I get fried.

GravatarNo, I don't sleep anymore.

I just hate on HIllary 24/7.

Gravataryou tell us...

Me? I got up too early yesterday, so fell asleep on the couch with my lenses in at 9, pried them out of my eyes and went off to bed at midnight or so, and now am ready to start another day.

GravatarOoo, slanties!

GravatarOh my.

Ripley has twisted herself into the funniest little pretzel over there in her half pipe.

GravatarI get up too early most days, unfortunately.

GravatarOne of the greatest, funniest conversations I ever had was a raucous roundtable on what the hell we thought PJ was saying in Sheela Ne Gig. "Stealing the Gig"?

GravatarPink man, Arizona Sun? Been there, did that - still paying for it, I'm afeared.

I wouldn't have guessed, ya know?

GravatarWell, when going outside for any long period of time, I alway wear a cotton, large brimmed floppy hat.

GravatarThe cracked bell is more of a picture than a shirt design--it would have been like one of those shiny 70's t-shirts. Still Walter has them at his CafePress store, and we'll have posters and stickers to put up and distribute.

I can't do orangey-red, but this is a bit bluer, and so okay. The DFH thing is black and white, so it looks nice on the red. We're basically selling them for cost-$10.

plantsman,

I'd buy ya a ticket to Baku if you stayed off computers for 5 years.

GravatarBarry, STFU and go away if you're not happy.

GravatarPlantsman. I've seen both the tap-water-pressure foggers and the high pressure ones (around 1500 lbs/per/inch at the outlet of the pump, I believe) and the high pressure ones work much better with less water. They can make finer droplets.

GravatarBarry, STFU and go away if you're not happy.

No, he did win. And we knew it on election night.

Everyone phoned in their results that night. Both campaigns knew.

Well now, I COULD do that, but I'm feeling kinda Public Service oriented right now.

You want to ride on Delta, or Baku-Azerbain Airways, both have great deals.

GravatarThe funny part was that at the small, local company I have making the shirts, I gave my order to a student of mine who asked me what it stood for.

I, err, think he was kind of flabbergasted when I told him. "Professor!"

GravatarNBC/MSNBC has been saying all week that Chuck Todd was "crunching the numbers" on the caucuses as he got them. No way of knowing the truth at this remove.

GravatarOkay. I put the brunch on a credit card. If we're having cash flow problems you can wait til the con to reimburse me.

GravatarChuck Todd doesn't crunch, he bites.

GravatarWhen I was a kid, I used to be the number-caller-inner at my polling place. I have no idea how I got that job.

Gravatarit's not hard to say 'thanks for putting up with me...'

GravatarYou HAVE done that, many times, and no matter how many times you did it, I never bitched once.
Done. With. This.

GravatarOkay. I put the brunch on a credit card. If we're having cash flow problems you can wait til the con to reimburse me.
qlª

I think I just bailed you out on part of that via paypal last night.

Plus my unanswered email about the bar tab....

Hmmmmm...

GravatarNBC/MSNBC has been saying all week that Chuck Todd was "crunching the numbers" on the caucuses as he got them. No way of knowing the truth at this remove.

Everyone pay attention while I say this again.

Both campaigns has people at each and every caucus who reported the numbers that night and the number of delegates won.

There's no actual "counting" to do. We did it that night.

We figured out how many people we had there and how many delegates we'd earned and then we elected them.

End of story.

Gravatarql,
Drop me an email--did you pay a deposit?

We should be fine--partly because of generous donations to the fund--but there are also a few folks asking for help traveling.

Gravatarmorning, all.

GravatarBarry,
Yes, we're covered.

And FWIW, the paypal goes to me.

GravatarThe campaigns, then, did not promote the numbers they received. You know, not everyone else does.

Capice?

Gravatar4LG, pay no attention to the plant guy, it just trows out stuff hoping for a reply that he can turn into a discussion about himself.

http://www.ptarmigannest.net/ tun...g_The_Loner.mp3

Covers it.

GravatarWith a caucus, at least the way we do them in Maine, there isn't any doubt about the numbers because it's not a secret ballot. People have to literally stand up for their candidate and the numbers are carefully checked by everyone.

GravatarAnd FWIW, the paypal goes to me.
Molly Ivors

Good Molly, I hope it showed up, I can't imagine why it wouldn't.

Do you get the organizer email also?

GravatarThe campaigns, then, did not promote the numbers they received. You know, not everyone else does.

Well, the Obama campaign did. The Clinton campaign did not.

GravatarYeah, Barry's ALL ABOUT OTHERS. Always.

GravatarI'm staying out of the 'which dem candidate' arguments till the primary's and conventions are over. It seems pointless to me till we can concentrate our efforts on defeating McCain.

I'm pondering remodeling and gardening efforts till then. I'm getting some books that show the Alhambra palace in Spain for inspiration. Nope I can not afford to be as elaborate as that masterpiece, but think those Spanish Moors had some good ideas on how to deal with a warm climate.

GravatarShoulda bought a bigger minibar for the night, happy plantsman?

GravatarYes, I do, Barry. Sorry I didn't get back to you right away--yesterday was kind of a dead run until I collapsed. Work, t-shirts, shopping, cleaning, then sleep.

GravatarWe are going to lose this election in November if the two sides don't grow up and remember what the real goal is.

And both sides have more to lose than just this election.

GravatarYes, I do, Barry. Sorry I didn't get back to you right away--yesterday was kind of a dead run until I collapsed. Work, t-shirts, shopping, cleaning, then sleep.

Good, 4LG will have it, the centaur is rooming with WT, so all is square.

GravatarWith a caucus, at least the way we do them in Maine, there isn't any doubt about the numbers because it's not a secret ballot. People have to literally stand up for their candidate and the numbers are carefully checked by everyone.

Here too.

Everyone has to sign in and show their voter ID card or a picture ID and a receipt showing they voted in the primary. Or a picture ID and then we had to look them up in the precinct voting roll and make sure they voted.

Then we counts and that determines the number of delegates.

It was all out in the open and we made sure that the Clinton people (who were WAY outnumbered) were a part of the process and double checked all the numbers.

It was all very open and fair.

GravatarIf you'd agree to stop ragging on me, I'd be fine --

GravatarWell, I see people after the fact, and it looks to me like homeschooled kids are as varied as any other population. I have one this semester who's quite bright, but she'd be brilliant with a real education.

If you really want to get pissed at the homeschoolers, though, see Jesus Camp.

Gravatardo large vocal protest on the war, taxes, illegal spying, rights abuses,
theft of the treasury come from the left? somewhat; but all do not equal the protest over the criticism of st obama. my god, you cant even disagree with his shoe style without wingers of the left going apeshit.
joe conasons somewhat tame article on obamas attack on hillarys ficances while not addressing his own brings such protest from the left its amazing. maybe when the rabid right goes after him, we could see some real 60's style activism. funny that bush couldnt inspire this type activity while obama doing nothing can.

govt funded illiteracy.

filled in your blanks.

In alaska, the home schoolers get like 500 a month stipend to cover costs.

Most spend it on gas for their snow machines, not on the kids.

GravatarYes, but teaching is a skill, as anyone who's ever been in front of a class can tell you. Sending all the fundie moms back to college to get credentialed strikes me as a fab idea.

GravatarI've mixed thoughts about home schooling being closed down in CAL.

1. / many of the California schools have been failing for a long time.

2. / I worry about the kids being home schooled. Are they getting enough social interaction? That's as important a part of school as the academic education. How well will home schooled children do once they grow up and have to interact with people of different backgrounds?

GravatarBroken tripod

My tripod is working just fine thank you! It's the dipping and what follows that concerns me.

GravatarIt's never okay if you're a Dem, hilldick.

GravatarNo doubt. Having the personality to enable learning in a room full of kids is not a given.

Gravatari had a friend with eight kids who opted to home school them. problem was her husband literally couldn't read and she just barely made it through high school with a general diploma, not regents. I had to stop associating with her because my jaw would hurt after a visit I would be biting back so hard.

GravatarThe social interaction is vital. Even in rural Merka, the community hired teachers and put up a schoolhouse, if they really want a separate education, do it right.

GravatarV, it seemed to spring from the attendant notion that parents know best about what and how to teach their kids. dinnit?
plantsman,

My experience is slightly different from Molly's, maybe because of geographic differences; in the south it's pretty much exclusively keeping kids 1. away from brown-skinned people, and 2. far from the nasty influence of evil librul teechurs who want their kids to *gasp!* think.

I'm sure there's a certain amount of variability, and the right parents could do a fine job of it, but the parents I've known who did it sure "knew" a lot of shit that was wrong.

GravatarDoug,
Yep. noted Jesus Camp: you can see there that these parents monitor their children very carefully to make sure that they receive no information that's not ideologically pure.

It's terrifying.

On the other hand, the homeschooled kid I have this semester has pro-gay-marriage buttons all over her backpack, so maybe they're not all fundies.

In CA, particularly, I'll bet there are a lot of hippie homeschoolers.

GravatarMy tripod is working just fine thank you! It's the dipping and what follows that concerns me.
CityKid (Nader troll)

Never dip your tripod, you have a hard time finding the apex again.

Gravatarwell,there goes your ribbon, citykid!

GravatarI have mixed emotions about home schooling. My old high school no longer teaches shop, or civics. The turned the shop into a "computer lab" (an oxymoron). So, I guess it depends if your a left-wing home schooler or a right-wing home schooler.

GravatarBut they want an education that will let their kid make a living while rejecting most of science and
(gasp) secular thought in the 21st century. Tough row to hoe.

GravatarComputer classes are mainly word processing and keyboarding.

GravatarSo, I guess it depends if your a left-wing home schooler or a right-wing home schooler.

See, that's what gets me, and I know it shouldn't.

Sometimes being liberal sucks.

GravatarCityKid, did I tell ya what a good time I had in Neiuweigen 2 weeks ago.

we have to talk.

GravatarOr at least they were when I was teaching.

GravatarHow well will home schooled children do once they grow up and have to interact with people of different backgrounds?
Doug

One of my former psych professors published some research that found that kids who were homeschooled had the same amount of social interaction and the same variety of experiences as kids who attend traditional schools. Interestingly, he's a fundie who hoped to find that very thing! I didn't drill down into his methods, but I thought it was fishy.

Gravatar1. / many of the California schools have been failing for a long time.

Long time?

From numero uno in the nation in the late 70s to 47th or worse today.

I wonder why?

Oh yeah! Prop 13.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cal...ition_13_(197

It appears that the conservative myth is just that. Direct democracy (ballot initiatives) doesn't lead to people voting themselves momey from the public coffers. It leads to people voting to lower their property taxes. Warren Buffet pays more in taxes on his modest home in Nebraska than he does on his palacial estate in CA.

In the 2003 California recall election in which Arnold Schwarzenegger was elected governor, his advisor Warren Buffett suggested that Proposition 13 be repealed or changed as a method of balancing the state's budget. Schwarzenegger, believing that taking such a step would be to touch a political third rail that could end his gubernatorial career, said, "I told Warren that if he mentions Proposition 13 again he has to do 500 sit-ups." A 2004 Los Angeles Times Magazine cover story that detailed the proposition's damaging effects and advocated its repeal drew heavy criticism from its supporters.

GravatarOr at least they were when I was teaching.

They still are, as well as learning various programs.

Gravatarwho hoped to find that very thing

I think we spot a problem with methodology.

GravatarWhen my son was still pre-school I used to follow one of the home schooling USEnet home schooling news groups. Not because I intended on home schooling my son, but because I had the idea there might be things I could do to enrich a public school education. To fill in the public school gaps.

Then the fundies showed up on the groups...

GravatarBut I know my daughter did much better in a smaller, more personalized school.

GravatarAll I know is winger schoolers.

Oh, daughter in law did one year for her 2 kids, they is so fubared now College is right out of the question.

No, you didn't. Lunch, dinner, or a bottle of Australian wine might be a good idea. Speaking of Australian wine, my "wine guru" tells me that Australian wines may be a thing of the past because of global warming problems down under. Got me so bummed out I went out and bought a bottle of Shiraz so that I wouldn't forget what it was like. A history lesson of sorts.

As did mine and probably most kids. My older daughter's class was very small, never got above 24 through high school. The younger one's cohort was never below 32. She was just lost until she went away to a small college. But we could afford it, most families cannot. From what I understand, it's only gotten worse in the last ten years.

GravatarThe Governator needs to create green-collar jobs to boost CA's economy to generate the revenue to fund the schools that teach the children that live in the house that Juan built.

GravatarThe book we're reading:

The Golers are a clan comprised of impoverished and inbred people on Nova Scotia's South Mountain, whose situation came to light in the book On South Mountain: The Dark Secrets of the Goler Clan by Canadian journalists David Cruise and Alison Griffiths. In 1984, one of the children, a 13-year-old girl, revealed the details of a long history of torture and abuse (physical, sexual, and psychological), to a school official. According to further details uncovered by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, this abuse and forced incestual relationships had been taking place for multiple generations.[1]

Background
The Golers lived together in squalid shacks, isolated from most of the other mountain residents and nearby towns.[1] They had little schooling and rarely worked. The children were generally forced to perform any menial chores (such as preparing food or removing trash). Garbage was simply thrown into the attic, until it was completely filled, and then the adults would make the children haul it all out.

A number of Goler children were victims of sexual abuse at the hands of fathers, mothers, uncles, aunts, sisters, brothers, cousins, and each other. During interrogation by police, several of the adults openly admitted to engaging in many forms of sexual activity, up to and including full intercourse, multiple times with the children. They often went into graphic detail, claiming that the children themselves had initiated the activity.[1]

[edit] The trial
Eventually, sixteen adults (both men and women) were charged with hundreds of allegations of incest and sexual abuse of children as young as five.[1]

[edit] Donna Goler
Donna Goler, one of the abused children who was removed from the Goler household (when she was 11), has become an outspoken activist for stricter child abuse laws, and for stronger protection of children from convicted pedophiles.[2] A year after the book On South Mountain: The Dark Secrets of the Goler Clan was published, she began a long fight to revise the Criminal Code, saying that it failed to protect the young relatives of convicted pedophiles.[3]

Although the Religious Reich are known for doing a lot of home schooling, they're not the only ones doing so.

Some liberal parents are home schooling because they don't believe the public schools are doing the job and the kids aren't safe in the existing conditions.

I think that was QUEST FOR FIRE.

I'm working on the sequel.

REQUEST FOR FIRE.

Actually, I think it was CLAN OF THE CAVE BEAR, but I have no joke for that one....

GravatarI'm sure the blowjob was invented long before Darryl Hannah.

GravatarYahoo hed:

Bush to veto waterboarding bill

GravatarMaybe Bush can veto himself.

There's a thought.

GravatarYou just can't make this shit up:

WASHINGTON - President Bush is poised to veto legislation that would bar the CIA from using waterboarding — a technique that simulates drowning — and other harsh interrogation methods on terror suspects.

The president planned to talk about the veto in his Saturday radio address.

Bush has said the bill would harm the government's ability to prevent future attacks.

Gravatarfilkertom:

BTW -- I am totally psyched that you're providing musical interludes for Saturday night at Eschacon.

GravatarI think that was QUEST FOR FIRE.

Surely there's a Rae Dawn Chong pun somewhere.

GravatarJudd Hirsch as Jeff Goldblum's Jewish dad? The only thing they left out is him stealing pennies off a dead guy's eyes.

Hey! At least they filed down his horns!

GravatarYet Arnold wants to cut $5.5 billion from the education budget so he can balance the budget rather than raise taxes.
Diane C. Barking-Mad

GravatarI'm sure the blowjob was invented long before Darryl Hannah.

Wouldn't simels know?

GravatarI think it was CLAN OF THE CAVE BEAR

Did Darryl Hannah invent the blow job in the movie? As I recall, the blow job wasn't invented until one of the later books in the series -- maybe Valley of the Horses.

GravatarMaybe most of us forget the cold war, but we managed to get through it without the NSA tapping every one of our phones.

The Soviets had spies everywhere, thousands of nukes, satellite states throughout the world, moles inside our intelligence services.

Yet, we are supposed to give up all our fucking civil liberties because some goat fuckers living in caves got a new shipment of box cutters in from Home Depot.

GravatarCanada keeps adding jobs amid U.S. woe

OTTAWA — While the world's largest economy is shedding jobs and teetering on recession, Canada appears headed in the opposite direction.

Canadian employers are hiring faster than they have in six years, according to a Statistics Canada report yesterday that shocked analysts who were sure the country would track its largest trading partner.

The U.S. labour force contracted sharply in February, shedding 63,000 jobs and leading economists to conclude that the subprime mortgage crisis, high energy prices and tightening credit have pushed the U.S. into recession...

But as the U.S. economy spirals downwards, Canada is adding jobs, with a net increase of 43,300 in February. The unemployment rate stands at 5.8 per cent, the lowest in 33 years, while the percentage of the population with a job rose to a record 63.9 per cent.

Why just last Saturday I heard life long Democrat Ron Silver tell Monica Crowley that he's supporting McCain because unlike Clobama he realizes that we're in a war unlike any other in American history.

Which is actually true. We've never been at war with twenty or thirty thousand poorly educated crazy people before.....

GravatarWhen I went to buy Over the Mountain at Amazon it was priced at close to $50, used. I just bought it from a Canadian seller for $5.50 including shipping and handling. I guess Amazon must think it's quite exotic since it comes from a foreign land thus the high price.

Molly Ivors | Homepage | 03.08.08 - 7:49 am | #

I think it's named after the alternate Canadian version Duke Ellington wrote of his signature tune.

Take the Train, A!!!

GravatarI see the Fed is anxious to cut interest rates again for the banks. Funny how that doesn't "trickle" down. They are also increasing their double secret auctions for banks and mortgage lenders to pretend that they are still solvent.

I've got a bad feeling about this.

Gravatar"It's all Bill Clinton's fault". "No one could ever have predicted..."

“Emails from the National Security Council’s counter-terrorism director, Richard Clarke, showed that he had bombarded Rice with messages about terrorist threats” before 9/11, Shenon writes. Some examples:

“Bin Ladin Public Profile May Presage Attack” (May 3)

“Terrorist Groups Said Co-operating on US Hostage Plot” (May 23)

“Bin Ladin’s Networks’ Plans Advancing” (May 26)

“Bin Ladin Attacks May Be Imminent” (June 23)

“Bin Ladin and Associates Making Near-Term Threats” (June 25)

“Bin Ladin Planning High-Profile Attacks” (June 30)

“Planning for Bin Ladin Attacks Continues, Despite Delays” (July 2)

But 9/11 Commission staff director Philip Zelikow was not interested in pursuing criticisms against Rice.

GravatarTake the Train, A!!!

GravatarIt's absolutely ridiculous, trying to take transit south from here. I have to take the train to Montreal, or two bus lines to Montreal to catch Greyhound south. Alternatively, there's a bus that goes to Bangor, but they don't time it right-- there's an over-night layover to catch the Greyhound.

There's also the ferry, down to Portland, then Amtrack south from there, which is actually pretty good. But there's no way to get from here to the Yarmouth ferry terminal...

Cool.

GravatarHey, I like poutine.

GravatarThe easiest and most efficient way to inject $ into the system is to extend unemployment benefits. That money would be circulated the very next day.

GravatarDid you guys see this little bit 'o sunshine from the NYT:

The dismal jobs report released Friday showed overall employment to be lower than it was three months ago. Every time such a slump has occurred since the early 1970s, a recession has followed — or already been under way.

And if the good times have really ended, they were never that good to begin with. Most American households are still not earning as much annually as they did in 1999, once inflation is taken into account. Since the Census Bureau began keeping records in the 1960s, a prolonged expansion has never ended without household income having set a new record.

GravatarThat would be humane -- can't have that.

GravatarIn a major step for the U.S. labor movement, the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) has announced that it will shut down West Coast ports on May 1, to demand an immediate end to the war and occupation in Iraq and Afghanistan and the withdrawal of U.S. troops from the Middle East.

holeee shit. that's a major development. and on commie day, too! lou dobbs' haid's gonna explode for sure...

GravatarThen there was this bit 'o sunshine in the same article:

Over the last year, the number of officially unemployed has risen by 500,000, while the number of people outside the labor force — neither working nor looking for a job — has risen by 1.3 million.

Employment has risen by 100,000, but even that comes with a caveat: there are also 600,000 more people who are working part time because they could not find full-time work, according to the Labor Department.

“The decline in the unemployment rate,” said Joshua Shapiro, an economist at MFR, a research firm in New York, “should not be viewed as good news.”

The British Broadcasting Corp. reported on its Web site that Thatcher fell ill at a House of Lords dinner yesterday evening, citing her spokesman as saying she had felt ``giddy and queasy'' and that her legs had buckled at the end of the function. He said she spent a ``comfortable night'' in hospital, and all tests seemed ``quite clear.''

In 2002 she suffered a series of minor strokes and was advised by doctors to stop making public speeches.

I read that yesterday. Infuckingsane.

Yes, but it's pulled by siberian huskies.

GravatarBush gets off on the fact that people are being tortured on his say so. Makes him feel like the Godfather. What a putz.

Absolutely. The whole bunch of them has a hardon for torture.

It's the only explanation for why they're doing it, as it has no practical value whatsoever....

GravatarWe never got one decent snowstorm here this year. I'm sort of bummed about it.
res ipsa loquitur

Right now it's coming down in those big, fluffy flakes I can remember catching on my mittens as a kid. It's a real old-fashioned Christmas card out there. Just a bit strange in the second week of March.

GravatarI believe that's how they got Bush to go out to the portico to meet with McCain

Well, that and they told him there was a bar.

It's not the WalterNeff design, btw, which is really too beautiful and photolike for a shirt.

GravatarMore Nevada Surgery Clinics to Be Cited

By KATHLEEN HENNESSEY – 9 hours ago

LAS VEGAS (AP) — A statewide inspection of outpatient surgery centers like the one believed to have spread hepatitis C to its patients has uncovered dangerous practices at four other clinics, a health official said Friday.

The state swore to quickly inspect all 50 Nevada outpatient surgery centers after it was discovered the Endoscopy Center of Southern Nevada spread the blood-borne virus to at least six patients by reusing syringes and sharing vials of medication.

Of the 18 clinics inspected by Friday, three in northern Nevada and one in Las Vegas will be cited and fined for improper disease prevention techniques, state health division chief Mike Willden said.

Willden said there was no evidence that the clinics were responsible for any outbreaks of disease.

The Gastrointestinal Diagnostic Center in Las Vegas will be cited for repeatedly reusing syringes, he said. Willden could not say whether the center also reused medication vials. Clark County pulled the center's business license, shutting it down shortly after the announcement.

Willden said the Digestive Health Center in Reno had problems with sterilization of equipment, but he did not elaborate.

GravatarLieberputz speaking at a Hagee function -
I begin by thanking your founder, Pastor John Hagee. I would describe Pastor Hagee with the words the Torah uses to describe Moses, he is an "Eesh Elo Kim," a man of God because those words fit him; and, like Moses he has become the leader of a mighty multitude in pursuit of and defense of Israel . . . .

My indoor/outdoor cat, Spike, has been inside for over 24 hours, and he's getting a bit wacko. And I just opened the door to let him feel how bad it is, he runs out, and goes flying down the stairs. Fine. 2 minutes later there's this hectoring yowl: Let me in, Dammit, it's cold and snowing outside.

Of course, this is all my fault.
