GravatarOk, I fixed the link.

What the hell is Abilify?

GravatarOT: Senior Conservatives have criticised comments by one of their Parliamentary candidates that Enoch Powell "was right" on immigration.

David Davis said the comments by Nigel Hastilow in a newspaper column were "very unwise" and should be withdrawn.

George Osborne said moderate language was needed on immigration and said the West Midlands candidate would be asked to "explain himself" later.

Labour minister Peter Hain said it showed the Tories' "racist underbelly".

Enoch Powell was sacked from the Conservative shadow cabinet after a controversial speech in 1968 against uncontrolled immigration.

GravatarAh.

GravatarThe 28-day limit on holding terror suspects before charge is likely to be doubled by the government.

Home Office Minister Tony McNulty said the government wanted to extend the limit, "probably" to 56 days.

Security Minister Lord West said "about 50" was the figure being talked about - but said safeguards would have to be in place to win over critics.

But he said efforts to extend it to 90 days had been wrong, and were handled "in the most appalling way".

It is thought the government will make an attempt to extend the current 28-day limit in the Counter Terrorism Bill to be announced in the Queen's Speech on Tuesday.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_po...ics/ 7077685.stm

if you have not got a confession out of a suspect after 28 days, your no more likely if you extend it to 90 days.

its a stupid idea.

GravatarWow, so even though democrats hate America, lots of people love it. Perhaps you lot should trade places with them?

GravatarI have a coworker who has just finished the process of getting her Green Card, and I was stunned when she told me that on top of all he hallses and waiting, her cumulative expenses in getting to that point were well over $10,000. What a racket! We've come a long way from "give me your tired, your poor".

GravatarOT: British mosques will be expected to modernise and do far more to outlaw extremist Islamic teaching under new rules drawn up by Muslim leaders.

For the first time, a code of standards will allow mosques and their imams to be supervised and regulated. At present, there is no set of rules governing the running of Britain's 1,500 mosques.

Among the core standards set out in the draft, and seen by The Observer, is the stipulation that members must offer programmes that 'actively combat all forms of violent extremism within the society at large'. All mosques will have to carry out regular checks on their staff, and offer mainstream religious teaching.

But there's a bumper new crop, apparently.

GravatarOT:Gordon Brown has responded to escalating concerns over the number of foreigners living and working in Britain by adding an immigration Bill to the list of new measures to be included in his first Queen's Speech this week.

A dedicated immigration Bill was missing from the list of 23 Bills and draft bills first revealed by the Prime Minister in July. But after national headlines were dominated last week by the political row over the impact of immigration on Britain's services and jobs market, it emerged yesterday that at least one Bill unveiled in the speech will tackle the issue.

Government sources last night claimed the Bill's proposals would include a move to "change the terms of citizenship" for immigrants, while "putting a marker down" for further developments. But opposition politicians last night claimed the plans, described as "a work in progress" by one minister, were a frantic reaction to the bad headlines that have dented the Government's immigration policy in recent weeks.

The Liberal Democrat home affairs spokesman, Nick Clegg, said: "This Pavlovian populism hasn't worked in the past and it won't work now. What we need is an immigration system which is fair, effective and provides local authorities with the right resources to boost social and cultural integration."

Gravatarfrom dead thread:

Amen on Dowd; there's going to be vastly more of this stuff, from vastly more places, the closer Hillary gets to being president. It'd be nice, special, even, were, say, issues and policy questions to come to the fore, for a diverting femtosecond or two, over the next year.

Meanwhile, Friedman today is suggesting that a car-driving India isn't such a good idea for India or the world (true), that there are other choices that could be made (true), and that India can, by using its ingenuity in amarket-based flat-earth fashion, invent inexpensive, state of the art rapid transit and save the world, perhaps even saving America from itself (well, maybe he should flesh this one out a bit).

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/11/ 0......riedman.html? hp

Why should you care what they’re driving in Delhi? Here’s why: The cost of your cellphone is a lot cheaper today because India took that little Western invention and innovated around it so it is now affordable to Indians who make only $2 a day. India has become a giant platform for inventing cheap scale solutions to big problems. If it applied itself to green mass transit solutions for countries with exploding middle classes, it would be a gift for itself and the world.

To do that it must leapfrog. If India just innovates in cheap cars alone, its future will be gridlocked and polluted. But an India that makes itself the leader in both cheap cars and clean mass mobility is an India that will be healthier and wealthier. It will also be an India that gives us cheap answers to big problems — rather than cheap copies of our worst habits.

Well and the process takes forever. People born here act like all you have to do is go down to the Circle K and pick one up and the only reason you wouldn't get one is to be a lazy welfare queen. Fucking hell, if they knew thing one about our fucked up immigration system they wouldn't be so fucking smug.

Gravatar"invent inexpensive, state of the art rapid transit"

Um - perhaps he's just now become aware of a little thing called "the train"? It's not particularly state of the art now, but it most certainly was, and in India, as in the US and Canada, revolutionised the society entirely.

Oh, hell, why read little Tommy.

GravatarJR, lots of theories abound on what causes it, none of them well established, the corpus callosum inadequacies being one of them, as well as the Ca+ reuptake theories, etc.

I'm sure out of all those decades of solid journalism, he'll be able to find a couple of clips of people asking stupid questions. And those will be the only ones they show.

GravatarA leading policeman has offered support to Metropolitan Police chief Sir Ian Blair in the wake of the Jean Charles de Menezes shooting verdict.

Ken Jones, president of the Association of Chief Police Officers (Acpo), said Sir Ian should not be replaced.

The force broke health and safety laws when officers shot dead Mr de Menezes in 2005, a jury ruled on Thursday.

A report into the incident by the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) is due this week.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/70.../uk/ 7077582.stm

someone really ought to of been charged with Mr de Menezes manslaughter

but what a total cock up, too many police officers in the control centre, general stupidity, I mean if they thought De Menzes was dangerous why did they let him on the bus? and when the Brazilian went underground the Met lost communications, which fed into their incompetent, which led to an innocent mans death

and its appaling the way Sir Ian Blair is clinging onto his job but I guess its just today's politics, if Politics don't always resign if they make an error, why should a Police chief?

GravatarLONDON (Reuters) - A Conservative candidate was summoned to meet the party chairman on Sunday after saying Enoch Powell's notorious "rivers of blood" speech on immigration had been proved right.

Nigel Hastilow, due to contest a marginal West Midlands seat at the next election, will meet Caroline Spelman in London, a Conservative spokeswoman said.

Labour ministers said his comments exposed the Tory party's "racist underbelly" and called on party leader David Cameron to sack him.

Writing in a newspaper, Hastilow said Powell was right to warn that uncontrolled immigration would change Britain forever.

"He was right," he wrote in the Wolverhampton Express & Star. "It has changed dramatically."

Powell was sacked from the shadow cabinet in 1968 after saying in a speech that Britain was "mad, literally mad" to allow large-scale immigration.

Hastilow later said his views were in line with party policy and reflected the views of many people in the West Midlands.

GravatarGWPDA: going back to the train is, like, reinventing the wheel. It'll happen, eventually.

The NY Times published, maybe a decade ago, on its Op-Ed page, a copy of the train scehdule for a weekday in Akron, Ohio, i think, from the pre-interstate, pre-jet era. It was astonishing in the options it offered, as the only game in town; my jaw dropped as I read it.
